Forgotten Heroes follows the stories of four courageous individuals from Singapore who found themselves in far-flung theatres of war.
From the blood-soaked beaches of Northern France to the icy waters of the North Atlantic Ocean, from the violent skies over southern China to the brutalities of a Japanese POW camp in Java, this documentary recounts the incredible true stories of Singaporeans who lived through turbulent times. Forgotten Heroes features an interview with one of the world's last remaining “Flying Tigers”, along with moving testimonies from our heroes’ families and leading WW2 experts. Thank you for this presentation. Finally our stories are now told. For us Straits Chinese the British Empire was our pride and our history. Thank you for put a spotlight for Straits Chinese that went abroad, including 8 of my family which 4 never returned.

Our Primary school histories only remembers those who sacrified their lives in order to free Singapore. Never have I ever heard of Singaporeans fighting against the Germans. These people deserve to be in the books that our students will read.
The Cold War wasn't an actual war. It was more of a geopolitically tense period due to conflicting interests and natures of 2 superpowers.
@@CptGqM its was also the time when the two power houses supported wars fought in Asia and even in the middle east such as the Korean, Afghan and Vietnam war. Compare it to the the classic fighting spiders game.
@@shadowtrooper262 Those were actual wars as there was conflict, but do note that the USA and USSR never declared war on each other. That was my point. I know that there were multiple proxy wars around the globe and J would love to have an episode about Singaporeans maybe in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

dude cold war isn't about soldiers fighting against other soldiers. A great example of cold war is between the Soviet union and US , the current cold war is between China and US

I am a malaysian. When i saw this. It got my interest. We never exiled to fight in europe since we can only defend our homeland for our freedom and independence. Salute to veterans.

@@Alhy-ls3dv yeah, both of them were from Kuala Lumpur and flew Hawker Typhoons on the Western front. Unfortunately only one of the brothers came back, he was shot down over France

My late father fought in www under the Malayan armed forces as a medic. He was stationed in Singapore and the Japanese were rounding all soldiers .. and my late father ran and hide and ran all through the jungles of Singapore through Malaysia. He fell ill from the jungle and thus became deaf. The war crippled him in a way for life.
this documentary is so amazing! love the editing and animation as well. hopefully these stories can be showcased in national museum, so that ppl can learn more about these heroes.

It is important to be aware of the things the past generations of Singaporeans did to make the world a better place to live in for future generations. Beyond recognition, they fight for what they believe in and that must be the right option during that precious moment. Everyone has a story, and glad that CNA shares this video that I would not know from other sources.

i really love history about wars, but i've never ever heard of a singaporean/s fighting in another country. guess you really do learn new things everyday.
Also my late uncle my mother's younger brother as colonel of Overseas Chinese volunteers base in Penang who fought in China Burma Road Campaign from 1939 to 1945 escorting military supplies for China's army during WW2

As a Singaporean, why is this not taught in schools? We need to let our people know about these stories! National Heritage Board or Museums should support this please!

Simply Fantastic, they where of the Great Generation. But strangely everyone seems to forget here in Asia. It is the same with all the men from Ceylon who joined RAF, out of 69, 24 was killed. May They Rest Peace

It clearly shows that we can only depend on ourselves to defend our own home... One can naively thinks the colonial power is "powerful"... but it has proven they can be defeated by a smaller weaker force.

I think David Marshall who was Justice Minister in PAP gov also served and became a POW in Japan. My uncle Bashir Mallal received honorary D.LL from NUS.
My Great-Grandfather was in the Philippine Scouts or “The forgotten soldiers” He fought against the Japanese army and had lots of battle. I remember when my father told me that my great grandfather was telling him a story about he’s experience, he said that there was a time where he hid in a cave to hide from the Japanese but three Japanese came to the cave, When my father asked what happened next... My great grandfather just stood silent, my father said it was like he was hiding it... until this day we still don’t know what happened.

They did... some of the first generation of Singapore Army officers fought and killed against the Indonesian armed forces in Kalimantan during the "Confrontation."

They all fought for the British Imperial Army during their time of glory. Most lose their life but some live through the time of conflict to tell war time stories.
During the Japanese occupation, a man named Subhas Chandra Bose visited Singapore. He was a prominent independence fighter against the British in India and recruited members of the Indian diaspora including my grandfather. They formed the Indian National Army (INA) which fought the British at the Myanmar-India border. My grandfather received flight training in Tokyo and got to see Kamikaze pilots preparing for their missions. The war ended before he saw any action with his airplane though. He was on a Japanese hospital ship passing through the Philippine Sea which was torpedoed by an American submarine. After that, he was rescued. He spent a few months in a prison camp in Hong Kong after the war. But as you know, all war prisoners were eventually pardoned (except some higher-ups).
When I was younger, he only told me that he was on a "boat" which had sunk (in his words). It was only after digging up that I found out he was on a proper ship that had been torpedoed by the Americans. He confirmed this when asked (I'd searched the name of his "boat" in the records).
Furthermore, Subhas Chandra Bose had visited my grandfather's house when he was still a teenager to recruit him. He was the man who led the Indian National Congress before Mahatma Gandhi took over. Bose had a very different outlook from Gandhi, who only believed in violence as a last resort. India's ethos today could have been different if Bose had succeeded in his efforts. But the Japanese never made headway beyond Myanmar. And Gandhi's non-violent protest movement eventually succeeded 1947.
Bose had met Hitler as well as the Japanese emperor in his attempts to organise a resistance. He crossed from a German submarine to a Japanese submarine in waters controlled by the allies on a secret mission to reach Tokyo. However, he disappeared after the war, never to be seen again. Numerous conspiracy theories abound as to what happened to him. The Indian National Army memorial still stands near the Padang today.
So the INA is helping the Japanese? How come there would be a memorial of this at Padang ?

Yeah i noticed that, no Chinese soldiers fought for the British at SG or at HK much, and the volunteers soldiers were made up of westerners in those countries. For some reason chinese didn't fight the Japanese but collaborated with them a lot.

I watch men like these and hear their stories and I wonder where the chuff we went wrong. Those guys endured so much yet they came through it and built a better world. Nowadays you've got kids claiming their very existence is threatened by having someone disagree with them. I would be honoured to stand in a wet, muddy ditch with those old guys and share my last piece of bread or sip of water with them. I wouldn't p1$$ on a millennial snowflake if it was on fire.
If the Malays were in control of Singapore, such stories would not come the light of day. If it appeared in social media the uploader would somehow be "breaking the law". Malays believe in themselves. Yet where are their stories that is worth mentioning? Non-Malays lost so much because of the Malays. The Asian Indians are also to be blamed because they kept on siding with Malays and sociable local Chinese bullies against local Chinese who have limitations of this or that. Local Chinese are indeed the Jews of Asia. Victims who are as though "Ungrateful Jews" there is usually a justifiable overlooked reason, the perpetrators then say "the past is the past. get over it" in a matter-of-fact way then walk away as though the perpetrators themselves had been wronged.
