***** if i get a new android in the next year what brand should i get? i know alot about all of it but i want your exact opinion :), thanks if you are able to reply to this :)
Awesome video Marques, great shots!. Not sure how I feel about a permanent flap covering the USB port, or the sticky-outty camera which begs to be scratched up...but the back panel looks more durable, the camera features sound impressive, and I'm glad they adopted the recent apps button on their phones too.
I never went back to The Verge after one of their reporters bashed all Android phones. Totally disliked the vid, unsubscribed, removed from my feeds on Pulse and Flipboard, removed from browser's bookmarks, and I wrote to The Verge to fire him.
People get so angry over phone OS preferences. It's this simple: If you like iOS, buy an iPhone. If you like Android, buy an Android phone. If you like Windows, get a windows phone. No need to be so hateful over another person's opinion on which OS is better (seriously, these are some of the dumbest and most dramatic comments that I've ever read). You all sound like a bunch of toddlers crying over the color of their sippy cups.
Fantastic video as usual, Marques! The biggest problem with the S5 is that this isn't an "S" year for Apple. They're going to regret not doing more with the device.
I totally agree. Apple is going big with this iphone 6, it probably is going to be their biggest upgrade yet literally. Samsung should have done a better job.
The sides are much worse with that fake plastic chrome. The back is replaceable but would you trust a third party case in terms of water resistance? Do you get a guarantee?
Leave it to MKBHD to have the good sense to do a voice over and some snappy editing for his first impressions video. For most events like this, everyone else desperately rushes through specs in what sounds like the middle of chaos. Sometimes you can barely understand the reviewer with all the racket going on in the background. Odd that no one else does this. Marques is sorta like Brian Eno, we’re always one step behind him. Keep up the good work!
He's by far my favourite tech blogger. It sounds crazy, but I think my biggest turn off from samsung devices are the hardware buttons below the screen. I've come to love how adaptable on screen buttons are.
I will subscribe to him then. I have been rocking a Motorola for the last two contract iterations and the one thing I am finally tired of is the piss poor image quality you get from the camera. iPhones and Samsungs seem to put much more love into image capture quality.
Okay, can you guys back me up on this one? Okay. The S5 would have been an instant seller for me IF, it had a metallic back (or anything that isn't plastic), little to no bezel, better speakers and a MUCH lighter and more flat, stock and modern OS. Now, I'm hesitant because of its hardware, heart monitor and fingerprint scanner. Not impressed really. Oh well :/
The only reason I look forward to the Galaxy S5 is the fact that the price of the galaxy S4 will go straight down,so I can buy a great phone for half the price of the S5.
Very nicely presented video. I am not enthused by the materials used at all. What a shame, as Samsung had some real opportunities to get rid of some of the plastic.
all i seen this video, is some guy bagging out the phone with no use of evidence, i feel like his an apple lover. and him saying the S5 is really an S4, every single company i know only slightly upgrade's there phone, take apple the 5 and 5c, they are the same phones, and than they have a 5s which has a finger print scanner "here take my money apple"..
Luke Blanchard 1...he' not an apple fan at all...he's an android fanboy. infact he never reviews apple products. 2. he never said the s5 was an s4 he was saying "the s5 is to the s4 as the iphone 5s/5c is to the iphone 5" hence he called the s5 a "S4s". he was trying to say that when you jump up a number version on a phone like 1 to 2 or s4 to s5....bigger changes are expected. you basically agreed with what he was saying but got ur head stuck so far up your own ass that your fanboyism took control. seems like you're more of a fanboy than he is. i would touch on the last point about lack of evidence but im sure you are smart enough to figure ur own mistake out fanboy.
It feels like Samsung is just throwing all these new features into their new phones without even thinking deeper and further about them. They're there because we can put them there and "just so they are". The actual execution is what struggles, in my opinion. An example would be the fact that (I guess) no one is capable of unlocking this new S5 by holding it with only one hand.
Im coming from an HTC one where the back button is on the left side. It makes more sense to me at least to have a back button on the left just like in a browser
REGARDLESS if it looks like the S4 and its not metal, this phone is GLORIOUS! soo many good things about this phone...speed demon processor, fantastic top of the line camera, direct google now integration, better fitness implementation with heartrate monitor, very sharp super amoled screen which is one of the best in the game even still not being 2k, incredible breakthrough battery life technology, awesome new touchwiz UI, fingerprint sensor for secure payments and logins, water resistant..etc. AND on top off everything the phone offers, Samsung offers even more value with almost $600 in free software. That's a great deal! I'm looking forward to upgradingg ;) forget the haters. galaxy ftw!
***** I know right? LMAO! The new Xperia Z2's design might not be everyone's cup of tea but when you compare it side by side with the Galaxy S5, by God it'll look like a very cheap device designed by a kid. I don't know..
Apples fans before the release: 2K screen, you can't even see the extra pixels, all it will do is drain battery Apples fans after the release: Same as s4 nothing new rubbish shit.
Nice video. Actually the multi tasking button does double duty. I reviewed the samsung galaxy tab 8.4 and 10.1 pro. Both have this configuration. If you press and hold the multitasking button you get the menu function! Just an FYI
Very glad I went for the HTC One. It's still beautiful, it's still as fast as ever. I almost always have it on Powersave and yet it's still smooth as hell. It's so good I really have no need to upgrade to the next HTC One.
I have an S4 and literally only thing I want from S5 is the finger print scanner and the way Kit Kat looks on there, but other than that... nothing else
Being the owner of an iPhone 5 (which better implements the fingerprint scanner), you would get tired of it after about 10 minutes. BUT, I'm not an iSheep, as I also use a Galaxy S4. If you want KitKat, just flash Cyanogenmod 11. Bam. KitKat. It's relatively easy to do, and if you have never experimented with flashing ROMs before, Cyanogenmod is most certainly the place to start.
Ya I have a friend with a rooted S4 with stock Android and it's really smooth but a little unstable plus I recently heard that Kit Kat is rolling out for certain carriers righr now.
NeverBeBored08 Cyanogenmod releases nightly builds, and stable builds. Right now, there is no "official" CM11 out, but I'm using a nightly from a couple weeks back, and I honestly haven't run into any major issues. One minor thing is that sometimes when I was using Spotify, the track would jump a little, almost like shaking a CD player, but that was very sinply fixed by changing the CPU governor. Another issue that I haven't managed to fix yet (this applies to every build of 4.4) is that Instagram crashes when attempting to upload pictures. Other than that, my battery life has been better, and I also seem to be getting faster 4G LTE speeds.
Just ordered mines today so excited. After all these years of using apple, I'm now team android! Watching this video has me so anxious, I can't wait until it gets here!!! :)
I love your "human" review. I mean, I feel like you're just talking to me and telling me about the phone and letting me decide. Not sure if that exactly describes the way I feel, but it's awesome! You're not using fancy jargon, or the like, you're just talking about the phone and reviewing it. I subscribed to you and I'm not only watching other interesting videos, but looking forward to new ones.
Nothing is stopping Apple from making an Android phone. It's open source so really, if Apple made an Android device I wonder how well it'd run. I know it sounds crazy but am I right?
I don't see why Apple would do this. iOS is part of their ecosystem, it works perfectly with all of their other devices. Most importantly, it's simple to use and Apple "takes care" of it's customers in the sense that they want to make each device to feel relatable. If all of a sudden iPhone is running some Android version.. well then it would scare half of the people away. I also don't think Apple will make 2 software versions of their products, because that's just not their vision or goal. All of the iOS apps work across all Apple devices through iCloud and having an Android system would make the iPhone just another phone, instead of part of an extremely successful, and most advanced ecosystem there is. Google and MS are nowhere close to having an ecosystem as tight as Apple. I don't think they would ditch that. Apple also believes in their products if you haven't noticed, so I don't know why they would want you to use different software, from their perspective.
so far everyone knows apple won't do it but lets say (for argument's sake) they do. well for starters, they will make it as optimized for their hardware as possible. Second, they will make it run as smooth, fast, and clean as possible. Third, the iPhone's hardware may increase drastically.
Just as I said previously. Bigger screen, new Android, and more "oooo, shiny." Now all we need is April to come so all of the Samsung fanboys can collectively pleasure themselves to this phone while mocking the Apple fanboys for doing the same thing whenever a new iPhone is released.
i tried it...had a lumia 822 from verison...but idk felt behind...that wa before all the updates but i did like it...very smooth and reliable os even though (at the time) the app selection did not work for me...but maybe in the future sometime i may reuturn
also 1080p i must admit makes that os look real pretty :) just google is my life right now...if microsoft could offer the same app flexablity and what not they may have my money...i do still love nokia for all that there doing
Didn't the 822 use Windows Phone 7 though? Windows Phone 8 is quite a bit more polished than 7 was. As for apps, I definitely have to agree with the fact that Microsoft needs to have a bit more app flexibility. That being said, I don't use too many apps myself, so that doesn't really bother me. I guess maybe if someone is an app whore, then it would be a big deal. From what I've seen so far, the apps that I do have on my Lumia 928 work quite well and don't shit all over themselves when you try doing something simple.
A few small things about this phone that I like. The USB 3.0 jack, is extremely snug, and you don't get a loose connection the way you did with the USB 2.0 if you played around with it too much. The same is true of the earphone jack, it fits an earphone plug very snugly so they aren't constantly popping out. You might even say it's a bit of an effort to get them out, but I prefer that to the alternative. I don't know whether these are deliberate design features, but they are certainly welcome. I also have to say that the battery life on this phone is excellent, I get a full waking day out of it. Today for instance, I unplugged my phone around 9am. I used it moderately, like used the GPS, a bit, as well as the camera, had a few phone convos, played some tetris, and the usual web surfing, used it as an mp3 player, and the battery is at 10% at 11pm, and it probably won't die before I hit the hay at midnight. However, if I were going out tonight, I could throw it on the USB 3.0 charger while I got ready, and an hour charge would certainly get me through till 4am, and hour and a half would almost certainly fill it up. I remember with my galaxy S2, if I ever did anything CPU intensive like a game, or leaving the screen on for any length of time, the phone would heat right up. This also happened when using the GPS, and even after stopping it, the battery consumption and heat would continue. On this phone I barely even register an increase in battery consumption whether I'm playing a 25 minute game of tetris, recording a 4k video, watching a 2-hour high def movie. There's no heat buildup and no more than a 10 - 12% drop in the battery. On a good day with my S2, I would get 10 hours, on a bad day with my S5 I'll get 12 hours. They've come a LONG way from the S2, and the S2 was a great phone! People complain about these incremental upgrades, but what do you expect when you buy a new phone annually? Wait a few years! What would you really expect in a revolutionary upgrade? 16 cores? 16 GB ram? $128GB memory on board? It should be all about refining the product now. Improving the voice recognition, streamlining power consumption even more, maybe adding solar charging capabilities as the technology becomes cheaper and more efficient. I can't see any reason to increase network speeds until data prices come down.
blanchbacker Or actually this might be Apple's chance to get back in my favor if they come out with a near 6in phablet and iPad Pro 13in this Fall. They might be able to steal me back from Samsung after dropping the ball when Steve J passed.
I personally think how they made their phone is really smart. I have my Galaxy s3 still intact for over a year. Sometimes with the cover on or off. I say this Galaxy s5 is gonna be a success! Cant wait to buy it!!
This guy has no clue that it includes a MUCH improved camera as well as the top of the line available Qualcomm processor at the moment. 3GB of RAM would've been nice to have but honestly, the S4 still flies with 2GB, it's not much of an issue but you're right, increasing RAM would've been beter as well.
The heart rate sensor isn't very accurate so don't get too excited by it. And the finger scanner is definitely a little awkward to use as you have to activate the home screen before scanning. Maybe the Iphone 5s is still better at the finger sensor.
The fingerprint scanner of the iphone might not have very good reviews, but it works 75-80% of the time. Samsung galaxy s5 has this awkward fingerprint sensor that require your finger to slide from the top to the bottom. Are you serious? You like the face recognition option? Different people have their opinions.

9tom7 this whole video was about the s4 is the same as the s5, so should we go with samsung's version of what came out this year with a different name then?
Not going to lie, the slippery back on the GS4 killed it for me. Looking forward to getting my hands on this one!
hi austin :)
I can't trust myself without a case.
***** Need a MKMD back :)
Think they took most of their inspiration from the amazingly well received 2012 Nexus 7?
I think so.
People still going to ask if it's a " GS4 "
Just doing some time travelling here...
You are not alone buddy
Yeah
yeah
Im here with u bro lol
hello fella time traveller
Blue is definitely my favorite! haha. Thanks for the quick, detailed coverage! Wish I could have made it down there but as always, great work!
hahaha..... bandaid edition...

I've been through two iPhones and still keep coming back to the Galaxy S5. Still using it today, solid phone
Finally, a heart rate monitor on a smartphone!
-_-
Wait... That's tge s5?
Such excite. Much useful. So relieve! Said no one ever...

only 1 minute in and this is already the best quality video on the S5 i've seen all day
the verge was quite good
ERCHINATOR It was good, but not this good.
MKBHD has the highest quality tech videos out there. Followed by The Verge. Keep in mind this is just one guy doing this in between classes.
welcome to mbhd's videos

I agree
i totally agree with you.. but its mostly depends on budget ..!
+Krysta Wright Yeah, I'll never understand fanboys. It's funny to watch them fight though XD
Windows, what a good memory the Lumia lineup.
As always...MKBHD delivers.
Fantastic video as usual, Marques! The biggest problem with the S5 is that this isn't an "S" year for Apple. They're going to regret not doing more with the device.
the first thing I though of, this is the chance for Apple, and HTC in that regard, to really change the rules of the game
I totally agree. Apple is going big with this iphone 6, it probably is going to be their biggest upgrade yet literally. Samsung should have done a better job.
Ǿutlandish EraMan
Honestly HTC is so irrelevant right now ( in terms of being a competitor).
Amazing! Once again MKBHD, you are the best! THE BEST!!!
man I loved the blue... That color was great!
LOL! The BandAid addition.
🤣
Wow, it looks so futuristic! I'm looking forward to buy it!
Good luck Samsung. You're gonna need it.
I am using a note 8 now and its amazing how far samsung design has come to now be one of if not the best on the market market
You're just such a professional and a gentleman, ***** #quality every time.
Everyone is going crazy over how bad the back is..... which is replaceable.
The sides are much worse with that fake plastic chrome. The back is replaceable but would you trust a third party case in terms of water resistance? Do you get a guarantee?
OMG I LOVE ANDROID..... i really kinda dont like the back but .... STOP WHINING AND REPLACE THE BACK
marques browniee is better than anyother person who's reviewing phones, MKBHD4LIFE.
Or Galaxy S4 2014 Edition.
LMAO! Band-Aid edition! Dude that made my day. LOL
I seriously laughed at that...hilarious!...band-aid edition...hahahahaa
I started watching his old videos and now TH-cam won't stop recommending then

"Of course, you have to use friggin' SHealth..." Is my new favourite quote from this guy.
Good review. I am eyeing this thing when my contract renews.

Very true!
much real
lol at everyone looking at the phone like its the cure for cancer
Thinking about a new phone, so this was a helpful review (as all Marques' videos are).
I feel the same way. An unbiased opinion.
You're a POLITICIAN! WOW. FAMOUS. Remember me Mr. MP
2mil views! 2mil views and it's just your first impression video! Wow, Marques! Good job! :D
I have no idea why but at 4:31 the way you said "friggin S health" made me laugh more then it should haha
Thumbs up for MKBHD and thumbs down for S5
!!! I laughed so hard when he said the gold is like the "Band-aid edition" LOL
I'm happy with my s4. Thanks for your impressions!

I feel the same way. Agreed
So, how do you feel now with the S9? 😂
Samsung really needs to fire the designer.
Your reviews are always so good
Since the Galaxy S4 was pretty much the Galaxy S3S, that must make this phone the Galaxy S3S+ or Galaxy S3SS.
Kinda like iPhone , all of their phones are the EXACTLY! the same except the new colors for the iPhone 5c
Lex T. they may look the same but they are much more upgraded than s4-s5
- I don't care who judges me...I love my Gold iPhone 5S. There I said it! I turned down a galaxy note 3 for my 5S and u know what. I don't regret it.
Christopher Holmquist okay? I still fucking love my iPhone 5S.
I'll stay with my galaxy s3 still loving it! :)
Band Aid edition LOOOOL OMG I can't take the S5 seriously now xD
ikr
The only reason I look forward to the Galaxy S5 is the fact that the price of the galaxy S4 will go straight down,so I can buy a great phone for half the price of the S5.
That's true. There will also be an abundance of second hand S4's because everybody wants the S5... Even cheaper. :)
Well, yeah,if you can deal with a second hand phone...But for me,Samsung's plastic is already cheap enough,I want it to at least feel brand new.
4:52...he called it the Galaxy S4. Yup, Freudian Slip meaning there's no real difference between the S5 and the S4. No need to upgrade to this.
Very nicely presented video. I am not enthused by the materials used at all. What a shame, as Samsung had some real opportunities to get rid of some of the plastic.
You've missed some very innovative and important features, like the ultra power saving mode and the download booster

Why is the back button on the right side of the phone
Its counterintuitive and I find it faster and easier to swivel my thumb rather than scrunch it up
Im coming from an HTC one where the back button is on the left side. It makes more sense to me at least to have a back button on the left just like in a browser
***** Youre just wrong. Everywhere you look the back button is on the left side whether its in your browser music player etc.
***** Blabediblabla, I am a lefty, leave the back button alone! I love it!
Samsung always put the back button on the right, no biggie
Awesome review. . Love watching your videos, you give whatever I need about the smartphones. .

+Scinium Studio hows it performing ?
its not slow AF but it is definitely slower than when i bought it, it freezes every once in a while and it over heats, alot
me too. Showing its age though especially after 2 android versions. Planning on upgrading to the pixel xl
Jay Belleza I just upgraded to an S7 edge because my contract expired last week. Thanks Verizon!
still using the S5 on 2018...

Jamell Lewis yeah but kind of redundant to say because IOS is built on unix aswell.
so far everyone knows apple won't do it but lets say (for argument's sake) they do. well for starters, they will make it as optimized for their hardware as possible. Second, they will make it run as smooth, fast, and clean as possible. Third, the iPhone's hardware may increase drastically.
blue4zero first and second are the same thing, third will not happen as apple is cheap and software optimization would be what they perfect.
The S4s ,You're RIGHT ! :D. The best description for the unexpected S5 features.
Can't wait for this phone!!
"I'm not complaining, I'm just saying" -MKBHD 2014
Samsung Galaxy S4s, you couldn't say it better. It's a shame too much waiting for nearly nothing. :-(
Great review as always !!
Galaxy S4s. It should have been the perfect name :D
Plastic all the way...
Ohhhhh poor suhan!!! Hooked on the old version!!! :P
Kakashi Hatake Mark my word! This time HTC will top the sales.
***** puhhh never!!!
Sathushka Suhan ohhhh suhan is so badly hurt!!! :'(
Just as I said previously. Bigger screen, new Android, and more "oooo, shiny."
Now all we need is April to come so all of the Samsung fanboys can collectively pleasure themselves to this phone while mocking the Apple fanboys for doing the same thing whenever a new iPhone is released.
they can do that while i enjoy my sony z2...seriously they just make they better and better
I just switched from an S3 to a Lumia 928. I really don't know why I didn't get a Windows phone sooner.
i tried it...had a lumia 822 from verison...but idk felt behind...that wa before all the updates but i did like it...very smooth and reliable os even though (at the time) the app selection did not work for me...but maybe in the future sometime i may reuturn
also 1080p i must admit makes that os look real pretty :) just google is my life right now...if microsoft could offer the same app flexablity and what not they may have my money...i do still love nokia for all that there doing
Got the s4 and love it. Think I'll just wait for the s6...
No more Samsung......Sony and htc, here I come
Google nexus 5 m8
William Allen shut up loser
William Allen Why you so fanboy? Last good samsung was s3
htc sucks. sony is ok.
htc is good !
I'm not impressed. They hardly changed it.
I really don't understand the idea of replace menu button with multi-tasking button. I use the menu button all the time on my S4.
i feel you bro
That's True Samsung is rapidly improving day to day and and flagship to flagship.
The S4S! Meh, I'm gonna wait for the Note 4 in a few months.
Same. My contract ends right when the Note 4 will come out, then I can get rid of my S3.
Few months? More like Oct.
blanchbacker Or actually this might be Apple's chance to get back in my favor if they come out with a near 6in phablet and iPad Pro 13in this Fall. They might be able to steal me back from Samsung after dropping the ball when Steve J passed.
No thanks. Iphone 6 32GB for me.
YES
Exactly what I thought
Get off this channel, scrub.
Fuckin casuals.
SuperHoeCakes fuck off u piece of biasa
erm......I own a iphone 5s,4s,nexus 5, Galaxy s4 , iPad 4th gen ,galaxy tab ....
so which side am i at???
I wonder
The new HTC m8 will blow it away.
***** *cough* isheep right here^^ *cough*
I personally think how they made their phone is really smart. I have my Galaxy s3 still intact for over a year. Sometimes with the cover on or off. I say this Galaxy s5 is gonna be a success! Cant wait to buy it!!
Get rid of the heart rate monitor and add more ram and a better cpu and camera.
They did add a better camera it has 16 megapixels
and they added better cpu.....
hi2656 well then they should try to improve touchwiz ram usage, stupid bloatware taking so much ram....
They coppied iphone
The fingerprint scanner of the iphone might not have very good reviews, but it works 75-80% of the time. Samsung galaxy s5 has this awkward fingerprint sensor that require your finger to slide from the top to the bottom. Are you serious? You like the face recognition option? Different people have their opinions.
Better than iPhone and Apple fanboys be jelly
congratulations marques, views gone far far, most viewed.
Samsung is the new Apple.
i really hope not cause apple is trash, i dont want samsung to turn into a garbage company
My thoughts exactly. They just threw random stuff together and its just like what apple does. Basic minor changes. Im actually kind of disappointed
Michael Scott Haters gonna hate
***** Yup, 64 bit would have been a lot better. I will not buy any device that is not 64 bit.
***** far from it. Qualcomm Exec Soft Fired After Calling 64-Bit A7 Chip A “Gimmick”

IMO, the next HTC flagship just might blow the S5 out of the water.
Jus' sayin'.
The band aid edition! Lmao!
As usual, awesome review!
that bandage part cracked me up lol
then Samsung's CEO said "Our innovation is unlimited".
Did he mean the innovation they take from Apple?
Lol, at 4:58, the guy right beside him pulled out his iPhone and started comparing them.
lol
Rooting this is where the real fun will be.
Did you notice a performance boost when you rooted your device ?
And i mean real difference.
Oh, man, how could anyone approve that "gold" version?
If you call this galaxy s4s then I guess we can call iPhone 5S... iPhone 4sss
😁
Finger print reader in the home button? I smell another apple lawsuit!
Motorola invented it ;) Apple can't sue nobody this time.
Not going to stop them.
I know that here in 2k18, the GS9 just came out, but this video just makes the GS5 look so good!👍
Keeps saying Galaxy S4 lol. But yeah, you are right. This is what the Galaxy S4 should have been.
I'm gonna wait for the iPhone 6.
lol so your're going to wait for the same thing that came out this year but with a different name. smart choice buddy.
9tom7 You're a genius. You know what the iPhone 6 features are before apple has made their public announcement.
9tom7 this whole video was about the s4 is the same as the s5, so should we go with samsung's version of what came out this year with a different name then?
iPhone 6, I'm coming!
huraaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ein deutsch-sprachiger
:D
Jaaaa :D
Watching this on my S21 Ultra. Time flies.
I'm getting a tired of Samsung. I believe I'll be going another direction with my next phone.
