Expanding his repertoire, Hayes penned the iconic soundtrack for 1971’s Shaft. The album became Hayes’s fourth consecutive platinum LP and the “Theme from Shaft” earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
Though often known for his larger than life persona, Hayes’ musical accomplishments - which laid the groundwork for disco and rap - established him as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Richard was Shaft, no doubt about it. Whoever chose him for that role was spot on. He played the hell out of that role. Another exceptional actor has left us and he'll be missed. RIP, Richard.

This song still sends shivers down my spine. Talk about grown folk music, this was it. When the album Shaft was released in 1971, it sold out at the Soul Shack in DC so many times. When Isaac appeared at Constitution Hall, the tickets were sold out within a couple of days. I did get 2 opportunities to see him live, once at the Carter Barron in DC and at the Hollywood Bowl in LA. Isaac was a beautiful man and so talented. RIP.

There is nothing to say. I saw him perform this live...come up through the stage from below...Like he said crescendo!! I met him, he was fine and nice!!..To see him in the chains and come from out of the cover was wonderful. I had a lot of hair, I wanted to shave my hair like his backup singer, Helen Washington...omg....he was just excellent...

At the time of the early '70s, the wah wah pedal had been so overused that much of the listening public was sick of the cliche it had become in recordings. But, in retrospect, a few songs like this one, were good examples of where the wah wah guitar was a fun integral part of the song.

It sure will. I was only 14 when I saw Shaft for the first time. I was so impressed! Back then theaters showed double features. I had to sit through 2 hours of a rock and roll movie called "Joe Crocker, Mad Dogs and Englishmen." And I'm still bored 49 years later. The movie wouldn't have been so bad if I was on drugs. Unfortunately I had not discovered drugs yet. I was a late bloomer.
