@@remo27 Honestly, that kind of pep talk was needed. Azure wasn't getting the answers she needed which was why she chose to fight Baiser in the first place in order to prove herself. If her efforts were still not enough due to her personal kinks tainting her role as a Magical Girl (which her broach clearly was about to or has broken over), then who better to tell her to straighten up than the villain she fights? It's even better coming from Baiser from the audience's point of view since she is a huge fan and she doesn't want Azure to actually give up and submit to her willingly. That defeats the whole image of Magical Girls/Heroes in general. So Baiser being harsh was definitely needed and it'll be interesting to see how their relationship is after this point, like if Baiser avoids Azure or goes easier on her on purpose (assuming Azure can still battle. I haven't read the manga yet so just theorizing). This is also a learning experience for Baiser as this is the first time she's ever broken someone like this so she needed to address it the way she did as well as consider what she will do in the future to prevent it from happening in that way again. As for Azure, she knows she can do better. She can enjoy herself when she can/has earned it/as it happens, but doesn't have to ruin herself on purpose to do so.

That's what I was hoping for. That she wants to be challenged by her MG 'subs' and, if necessary 'build them up', not tear them down. But she seems to have messed up with Sulfur here, who must be feeling psychologically devastated after such a cruel and judgmental rejection. Nope, if you remember her fight with Magenta, it was the fact that Magenta wouldn't break that excited Utena. "That's so fucking cute" to quote her exactly lmao.
That interpretation might have been possible in the original manga, but here the entire rest of the episode is setting up the fall, and giving insight into the characters. We see that Utena still has the idealism and pride in the magical girls, while Sayo has lost her will to fight. If Azure had asked to be dominated some more, Baiser would have been surprised, but probably would have gone along with it. (Especially if Azure had stood up) But Azure explicitly said that she was too weak and could not fight any more. That was not what Baiser wanted to hear. She thought she had a sadist / masochist battle going on, and didn't realize she had a dominant / submissive batte instead. This was really a failure to communicate. It took Utena too long to figure out what was going on, and she completely misjudged the sudden return of Azure's fighting spirit.
The awakening of Azur! The snowy mountain approaches! Baiser will have more trouble. The antagonists are there! Maman Baiser's punishment! So many additional scenes! Great adaptation! The innocent smile of Utena as a child and the lecherous smile of Magia Baiser, that meme in the making.
I think utena is the first pwrson to break a magi heart without killing the magi girls. Which mean in the last scene, those heart indicate that the magi girl are DEAD. IDK if they gonna change in the anime but in the manga the lord quad literally stood on top of a mountain made of magical girl's corpse.
Finally animated! Couldve been animated a bit better at stages but zamn! This right here is nice. All the additions too help out: -The origin of why Utena loves Magical Girls. -Sayo effectively starting to come to grips with how she has been getting distracted from the pleasure. -Sayo clearing her mind by heading to the convention, where we see more gushing from Utena, and as well Sayo deciding to focus after seeing the magical girl anime, as Utena once has. -Fight mainly going unchanged, but lovely fanservice nonetheless Overall, kinda happy with this imo. I wonder if this means next episode will be on 12 and 13?
They need some more budget for the fight scenes, especially with how many there are later on in the manga. I hope to see Utenas "I don't like them" face animated in good quality next week

Yeah, as I said elsewhere, that would have been a shock to Utena. More likely Sayo would have probably just detransformed. Utena could have then "turned" her if she wanted to, although given how bloodthirsty the others seem to be who knows if they would have allowed that.
Don't hold your breath on Magenta's origin, that hasn't even been shown in the manga yet, so unless the anime invents something, expect it in season 3. "Utena looks up to the magical girls." Funny that you worded it precisely this way, since the fantranslations of the manga are called "Looking up to magical girls" rather than gushing over. Oh no, those other four didn't break them, they straight up killed the other magical girls and took their transformation hearts as trophies. Azure's item cracking is something the anime invented, that does not happen in the manga. It also is a rather questionable decision by the anime team in my opinion, since it implies that there can't be evil magical girls, since they'd lose their transformation item and thus their powers if they fall...
I saw the cracking as a weakening of the magical girls' will. Baiser did not break the gem completely because she didn't want to really hurt Azure. Although it does make me wonder if Baiser had accepted Azure's surrender and continued, if it would have eventually killed her. That would have been a shock to Utena. Of course she probably would have transformed back to Sayo before that. I think we can assume the Lord Squad had to kill the magical girls after they "broke" them. But anyway, I think we can assume Azure can train and "repair" her gem, possibly with the repair of the cracks indicating the progress of her training. Or maybe, if this is an anime invention it will just be ignored. As for the villains, they have a transformation item too, so it would make sense if it could be cracked as well. Again, it would indicate when the villain is vulnerable to being killed. The star items are not gems, though, and don't glow, so maybe they don't show damage until their owner dies. I'm curious about about the stars, since the barrier object is made of a heart and a star. So is Magenta's staff, and in fact Azure ALSO has a staff which is the hilt of her sword. Sulfur seems to have one too, but it only appeared in the first episode. Can the magical girls switch sides, transforming their gem to a star and vice versa? Or do Venalita or Vatz have to issue them a new one? Isn't a villain technically a magical girl? They have exactly the same transformation with exactly the same effects, except magical girls have hearts in the background and villains have stars.
Honestly this is the chapter/episode that actually sparked some genuine interest in the series for me, I just really like the idea of a villain who has standards not just for herself and her teammates but also her enemies and is genuinely disappointed in the possibility of them giving up or throwing away their ideals. Utena is... interesting. Like, outside of the comedy and perversion there's potential to do some neat character stuff with her.
You're half right on why the crystal breaks. The crystal breaks because the person behind the magic is broken. It's the most common trope in magical girls since the concept is all about the will to protect people and that jazz. Man I think this whole anime just about how easily corruptible any one persons desires can be without a strong enough will.

I feel like the black and white mascots are secretly work together and making the evil organization and the magical girl fight each other for their own benefits. It's a common trope and since this is a parody of magical girl it's not a surprise if they take those route
I have a very strong feeling Utena will not jive with Enormita at all. Maybe even starting her own faction down the line or subverting them from the inside when she can. Enormita wants to kill Magical Girls, Utena wants them strong and cute. Those two goals are incompatible. Utena will not let a magical girl become her slave since that would be turning evil and she won't allow that, but the evil girls however... they a free game and a threat to the lives of her precious toys. So may ways this could go down. Can't wait to find out. No spoiling you manga readers.
they changed a little detail that I think it's a bit relevant from the manga. When they show the defeated magic girl hearts, in the manga, some are straight chopped up and some have bullet holes. They weren't breaking them, they were killing them. It is relevant later on :B

The episodes kind of go out of order compared to the manga but thankfully they do not reveal too much in terms of spoilers and the filler does actually add to the anime rather than padding out the episodes, which makes me think the studio did try very hard with the adaption and are fans of the series, so I do like the production side, I hope this continues because it is a good anime adaption so far.

Korisu I've got no idea, I avoid thinking about her because she scares me. Sulfur's probably chaotic/neutral too, Azure and Magenta I'd say are lawful/good. As for the new evil people, the whole "arrogantly sitting at an elevated throne looking down at everyone" thing and the world domination stuff sounds a lot more lawful/evil to me than chaotic.
With the recent developments, and from what’s shown in the opening and ending, I could see it as something like Utena and her group acting as the bullies, but so far, they haven’t done anything extreme to our bullied victims. Then, for whatever reason, something like a gang or actual criminal organization starts to get more active in the area, and it spells trouble for everyone, which, in turn, leads to the bullies (Utena and co) showing that they have hearts and, at the very least, are territorial enough that they won’t let others move in on their turf.
I can totally get why Utena was angry about Azure, there's one type of sadist who wants their playmate to be rebellious, that's Utena's playing style, not every sadist likes a masochist, everyone has their own sexual fetishes😁
I am hoping this show just keeps getting more and more meta. I think what its all leading to is that the entire thing is ultimately a business model to sell magical girl merchandise and they all work for the same people / manufactured conflict.
In the manga, Baiser is even harsher towards Azure. She tells Azure something along the lines of: "You're a sick joke. And I'm not laughing" and that hit so hard. Man I can't wait to see Baiser fully embrace her "evil" side. If the anime adapts *no spoilers* THAT part, it's gonna be nuts.
I don't think Tres Magia are "the bad guys" just misled. That's what Utena thought when she believed Venalita's people were being oppressed. She's the good guy, though, while the Lord Squad are definitely evil. Evil protagonist against even worse evil, except Utena isn't evil. More like anti-hero protagonist. I loved this episode and how it clarified that Utena really does love the magical girls. She isn't just satisfying her own lust and pretending to do it for the magical girls. She had the opportunity to break Sayo and do whatever she wanted to do with her, and she turned her down. Because it was never about abusing the magical girls, it was about seeing them get back up and win with the Power of Friendship. And poor Sayo. I think she was really starting to fall for Baiser, just like Kiwi, and being rejected by her must have hurt. They both looked so dejected at the end of the episode; Sayo because she hsd misunderstood what Baiser wanted, and Utena because she had brought Azure to this point, and couldn't do anything to help her but tell her to get back on her feet. This is really exploring how dark this kind of sexual exploration can get. Nobody is talking or being honest with anyone else, and none of them know what they're doing. And of course this will only get worse now that the real.plot has begun.
Don't wanna spoil but in the manga.... . . . . . . Venalita (the black mascot) is really planning something evil using Utena (without Utena and most of the enormita knowing abt it).
Utena is basically a dom who’s disappointed her sub submitted too easily. Pretty much, you might say that the dom is displeased that her sub couldn’t hold out and finished without permission.
This episode is really interesting in a ton of ways, but one thing it highlights that I think is very important is how Utena doesn't really realize the weight of the stuff she does. She sees all this as a fun game to play where she can bully the magical girls and enjoy herself without consequence, and she never even thought that her actions could change someone as much as they changed Azure/Sayo until it happened. Utena really strikes me as the kind of character who's incredibly vulnerable to a reality shock. She's definitely a bad person as she is now, but partially because of ignorance over than just malice. And Venalita feeding into her desires also doesn't help. She's not ever going to stop being a deranged pervert abusing people for fun, of course, and I'm not going to defend her morality saying she's a good person (she was one before power got to her head, I don't think she is one now. Even if she's better than most villains, she's still bad). But these contrasting aspects of being both genuinely nice and harmfully deranged are what makes her such an interesting character. She's the kind of person you can rightfully despise, but often still confidently trust at the same time. Or in other words, she's the kind of villain you ask for a truce with in a three sided fight.
Okay...hear me out. The shower scene is, without a shred of irony, important to the plot. Sayo is already bothered by the effect that Baiser is having on her. She's a masochist that is realizing that she's a masochist trying to fight a sadist. She's holding out the best she can, but whens he starts getting "the good tingle" while thinking of Baiser's treatment at random times, it's the signal to her that she's quickly falling. So she goes to fight Baiser. And then comes one of my favorite little details of the fight: *she puts up a barrier* Every time she's been captured in a torture device by Baiser, there's always been someone there to bail her out or snap her out of it. There's always been someone to save her, right? Sayo realizes that her fall to Baiser stopped being a matter of IF, and became a matter of WHEN. This fight, sealed away from the outside world in any way that matters, was mean to have one of two endings. The less likely one, from Azure's perspective, is that she beats Baiser. She's free of the demon and her temptations and can finally go back to being the Magia Azure that everyone knows. The other, more likely, scenario was that Azure would finally be overwhelmed by the feelings that Baiser inflicts on her. But the difference is that she's alone. There's nobody to save her, snap her out of it, or drive away Baiser. And, most importantly, nobody to witness the death of Magia Baiser and the birth of Baiser's Pet. That barrier was created with the intention of being a grave to either the villian known as Magia Baiser or the Heroine Formerly Known as Magia Azure... Lucky for Azure, Baiser isn't a fan of corruption plots. Lucky for her, her greatest threat is also her biggest fan.
This episode is why I like Baiser. She is not a typical hentai protagonist/villains who broke the heroine and turned them into mind broken slaves. She has a standard and code of honor. Unlike some asshole healer who have a revenge boner.

My thoughts on the gem breaking is that it could be that once you’re no longer deserving or fit for being a magical girl, that the power rejects them. However what the other, older members did to get those broken gems… it’s different from how Utena almost did it. Also I think I know where the show will end the first season and it makes me a little disappointed… anyway, a lot more fun is about to go down.

Guys, I'm caught up with the manga. There's no need to correct me, especially since *Spoiler* There a certain part of the story where she loses control, becomes a terrible monster and turns one of her heroines into an empty husk that just exists to be her plaything.

Nope, if you remember her fight with Magenta, it was the fact that Magenta wouldn't break that excited Utena. "That's so fucking cute" to quote her exactly lmao.
That interpretation might have been possible in the original manga, but here the entire rest of the episode is setting up the fall, and giving insight into the characters. We see that Utena still has the idealism and pride in the magical girls, while Sayo has lost her will to fight.
If Azure had asked to be dominated some more, Baiser would have been surprised, but probably would have gone along with it. (Especially if Azure had stood up) But Azure explicitly said that she was too weak and could not fight any more. That was not what Baiser wanted to hear. She thought she had a sadist / masochist battle going on, and didn't realize she had a dominant / submissive batte instead.
This was really a failure to communicate. It took Utena too long to figure out what was going on, and she completely misjudged the sudden return of Azure's fighting spirit.
Best episode yet. They did justice for the manga.

-Sayo clearing her mind by heading to the convention, where we see more gushing from Utena, and as well Sayo deciding to focus after seeing the magical girl anime, as Utena once has.
-Fight mainly going unchanged, but lovely fanservice nonetheless
Overall, kinda happy with this imo.

Don't hold your breath on Magenta's origin, that hasn't even been shown in the manga yet, so unless the anime invents something, expect it in season 3.

Azure's item cracking is something the anime invented, that does not happen in the manga. It also is a rather questionable decision by the anime team in my opinion, since it implies that there can't be evil magical girls, since they'd lose their transformation item and thus their powers if they fall...

I saw the cracking as a weakening of the magical girls' will. Baiser did not break the gem completely because she didn't want to really hurt Azure. Although it does make me wonder if Baiser had accepted Azure's surrender and continued, if it would have eventually killed her. That would have been a shock to Utena.
Of course she probably would have transformed back to Sayo before that. I think we can assume the Lord Squad had to kill the magical girls after they "broke" them. But anyway, I think we can assume Azure can train and "repair" her gem, possibly with the repair of the cracks indicating the progress of her training. Or maybe, if this is an anime invention it will just be ignored.
As for the villains, they have a transformation item too, so it would make sense if it could be cracked as well. Again, it would indicate when the villain is vulnerable to being killed. The star items are not gems, though, and don't glow, so maybe they don't show damage until their owner dies.
I'm curious about about the stars, since the barrier object is made of a heart and a star. So is Magenta's staff, and in fact Azure ALSO has a staff which is the hilt of her sword. Sulfur seems to have one too, but it only appeared in the first episode.
Can the magical girls switch sides, transforming their gem to a star and vice versa? Or do Venalita or Vatz have to issue them a new one? Isn't a villain technically a magical girl? They have exactly the same transformation with exactly the same effects, except magical girls have hearts in the background and villains have stars.

Honestly this is the chapter/episode that actually sparked some genuine interest in the series for me, I just really like the idea of a villain who has standards not just for herself and her teammates but also her enemies and is genuinely disappointed in the possibility of them giving up or throwing away their ideals. Utena is... interesting. Like, outside of the comedy and perversion there's potential to do some neat character stuff with her.
You're half right on why the crystal breaks. The crystal breaks because the person behind the magic is broken. It's the most common trope in magical girls since the concept is all about the will to protect people and that jazz.

Enormita wants to kill Magical Girls, Utena wants them strong and cute. Those two goals are incompatible. Utena will not let a magical girl become her slave since that would be turning evil and she won't allow that, but the evil girls however... they a free game and a threat to the lives of her precious toys.

I think at this point it's pretty clear there are zero male characters in this series.
The episodes kind of go out of order compared to the manga but thankfully they do not reveal too much in terms of spoilers and the filler does actually add to the anime rather than padding out the episodes, which makes me think the studio did try very hard with the adaption and are fans of the series, so I do like the production side, I hope this continues because it is a good anime adaption so far.

Utena is probably lawful/good (I think she's a bad person, but that doesn't mean she isn't good aligned. From what I understand D&D alignments are more about your general nature and view of the world, Utena's issues are a lot more specific and situational than that, she's bad because of personality traits rather than alignment. Her average default is being nice and caring, she's bad when triggered. Maybe neutral I guess, it's arguable, but I'd call her lawful/good), she cares way too much about the idealism and roles to be chaotic. And Kiwi is DEFINITELY chaotic/neutral. Korisu I've got no idea, I avoid thinking about her because she scares me. Sulfur's probably chaotic/neutral too, Azure and Magenta I'd say are lawful/good.
As for the new evil people, the whole "arrogantly sitting at an elevated throne looking down at everyone" thing and the world domination stuff sounds a lot more lawful/evil to me than chaotic.
With the recent developments, and from what’s shown in the opening and ending, I could see it as something like Utena and her group acting as the bullies, but so far, they haven’t done anything extreme to our bullied victims. Then, for whatever reason, something like a gang or actual criminal organization starts to get more active in the area, and it spells trouble for everyone, which, in turn, leads to the bullies (Utena and co) showing that they have hearts and, at the very least, are territorial enough that they won’t let others move in on their turf.
This is where it gets interesting for me in the manga

In the manga, Baiser is even harsher towards Azure. She tells Azure something along the lines of: "You're a sick joke. And I'm not laughing" and that hit so hard. Man I can't wait to see Baiser fully embrace her "evil" side. If the anime adapts *no spoilers* THAT part, it's gonna be nuts.
I don't think Tres Magia are "the bad guys" just misled. That's what Utena thought when she believed Venalita's people were being oppressed. She's the good guy, though, while the Lord Squad are definitely evil. Evil protagonist against even worse evil, except Utena isn't evil. More like anti-hero protagonist.
I loved this episode and how it clarified that Utena really does love the magical girls. She isn't just satisfying her own lust and pretending to do it for the magical girls. She had the opportunity to break Sayo and do whatever she wanted to do with her, and she turned her down. Because it was never about abusing the magical girls, it was about seeing them get back up and win with the Power of Friendship.
And poor Sayo. I think she was really starting to fall for Baiser, just like Kiwi, and being rejected by her must have hurt. They both looked so dejected at the end of the episode; Sayo because she hsd misunderstood what Baiser wanted, and Utena because she had brought Azure to this point, and couldn't do anything to help her but tell her to get back on her feet.
This is really exploring how dark this kind of sexual exploration can get. Nobody is talking or being honest with anyone else, and none of them know what they're doing. And of course this will only get worse now that the real.plot has begun.

This episode is really interesting in a ton of ways, but one thing it highlights that I think is very important is how Utena doesn't really realize the weight of the stuff she does. She sees all this as a fun game to play where she can bully the magical girls and enjoy herself without consequence, and she never even thought that her actions could change someone as much as they changed Azure/Sayo until it happened.
Utena really strikes me as the kind of character who's incredibly vulnerable to a reality shock. She's definitely a bad person as she is now, but partially because of ignorance over than just malice. And Venalita feeding into her desires also doesn't help.
She's not ever going to stop being a deranged pervert abusing people for fun, of course, and I'm not going to defend her morality saying she's a good person (she was one before power got to her head, I don't think she is one now. Even if she's better than most villains, she's still bad). But these contrasting aspects of being both genuinely nice and harmfully deranged are what makes her such an interesting character.
She's the kind of person you can rightfully despise, but often still confidently trust at the same time. Or in other words, she's the kind of villain you ask for a truce with in a three sided fight.

Okay...hear me out. The shower scene is, without a shred of irony, important to the plot.
Sayo is already bothered by the effect that Baiser is having on her. She's a masochist that is realizing that she's a masochist trying to fight a sadist. She's holding out the best she can, but whens he starts getting "the good tingle" while thinking of Baiser's treatment at random times, it's the signal to her that she's quickly falling. So she goes to fight Baiser. And then comes one of my favorite little details of the fight: *she puts up a barrier*
Every time she's been captured in a torture device by Baiser, there's always been someone there to bail her out or snap her out of it. There's always been someone to save her, right? Sayo realizes that her fall to Baiser stopped being a matter of IF, and became a matter of WHEN.
This fight, sealed away from the outside world in any way that matters, was mean to have one of two endings. The less likely one, from Azure's perspective, is that she beats Baiser. She's free of the demon and her temptations and can finally go back to being the Magia Azure that everyone knows. The other, more likely, scenario was that Azure would finally be overwhelmed by the feelings that Baiser inflicts on her. But the difference is that she's alone. There's nobody to save her, snap her out of it, or drive away Baiser. And, most importantly, nobody to witness the death of Magia Baiser and the birth of Baiser's Pet.
That barrier was created with the intention of being a grave to either the villian known as Magia Baiser or the Heroine Formerly Known as Magia Azure... Lucky for Azure, Baiser isn't a fan of corruption plots. Lucky for her, her greatest threat is also her biggest fan.
This episode is why I like Baiser. She is not a typical hentai protagonist/villains who broke the heroine and turned them into mind broken slaves. She has a standard and code of honor. Unlike some asshole healer who have a revenge boner.

My thoughts on the gem breaking is that it could be that once you’re no longer deserving or fit for being a magical girl, that the power rejects them. However what the other, older members did to get those broken gems… it’s different from how Utena almost did it. Also I think I know where the show will end the first season and it makes me a little disappointed… anyway, a lot more fun is about to go down.
