  • Our Homemade, John Deere themed, mobile log splitter. Designed
    specifically to make the larger pieces of wood easier to split. with a
    capacity of 500+ pounds at a max 16ft reach, the boom makes for easy
    processing of large rounds, and safe dismantling of logs in piles. it was
    not designed for fast production of easy to split wood, it was designed
    for safe, easy production of hard to split wood. it has 12 hydraulic
    functions, of those 8 are on the main pump, and 4 on the aux. some
    more specs and notes below. also an in depth review video coming
    soon after almost 1 year of use. [nov 2016]
    SPECS:
    19HP Vanguard V-twin motor. (key start)
    hydraulic 2 stage pump + belt driven axillary pump.
    16ft knuckle boom lift, on 360 turret, with extension.
    (2) 5in rams on pusher.
    6 way staggered wedge, 1in thick steel.
    33in tires on a 7k axel.
    9ft hitch extension.
    log lift, folding wings, folding rear tray.
    20gal fuel tank, 20gal hydraulic tank.
    swing arm control panel
    electric oil cooler
    overhead lights on boom
    70 tons of splitting power
    GVW- 6680lbs
    folded height- 7.5ft
    folded length- 16ft
    folded width- 6.5ft
    steel specs:
    -frame built from 4x4" 3/8" square tubing
    -knuckle boom is 1/2" plate, with 1" plate reinforcement
    -boom extension is 3" 3/4" wall pipe, with 2 1/4" fitted pipe insert
    -hitch ext used a long strand of 2 1/2" square tubing, running the
    length of the machine, and a 2" 11ft ram below it, run along rollers.
    -and the wedge is 1" plate, with the cutting edge done by a plasma cutter.
    NOTES
    firewood is not my full time job. after 1 year its split roughly 50 cord and I'm very
    satisfied with the small amount of effort involved. anyone with a small machine knows the
    pains of dealing with a 50 inch round. I used to cut them in halves or quarters but now I
    just lift it up to the wedge. I will be making a video to follow up on the features and their usefulness,
    and also anything I would change, anything I have broken, and any plans for the future.
    also if you noticed, in the pictures from the build, the wedge was an 8 way design with 3 wings.
    after a few knurly pieces we realized it was more efficient as a 6 way wedge.
    thank you all for the views, and support. please ask away with any questions, or contact me another way
    (facebook, twitter, ect..)

    hey everyone, been about 2 years but im getting around to making my follow up video where ill be discussing any and all issues ive had, the best and worst parts of it, repairs and modifications, ect.. stay tuned friends!

      the biggest issue was tearing off the top two wedges on some knotty elm logs. if you notice, in the video, at the beginning (0:23) there are 6 blades on the wedge. and in the middle of the video (2:38) theres only 4. soon after completion, I bent the 1" thick steel like it was warm taffy ;) other than that, shes a beast and works great.

    Yes ..... You have created a bad ass firewood machine my friend........ I have been looking hundreds of wanna be firewood machines on you tube..... this design might the finest thought out machine of them all....... I will most definitely use some our thoughts on my own creation...... The knuckle boom will wok very well....... Congrats......

      Thank you! it all came about when I commented on one of my fathers previous designs. I said the only way to improve on it is to add a boom to do the heavy lifting. not long after I wanted to build my own splitter and we designed this. ive seen massive machines with loading arms, and full grapple controls, but I would call this the smallest self loading splitter out there.

      Amazing piece of machinery looks to be built on John Deere square baker frame love the boom and tounge retract marvelous wedge like re double cylinder pusher. Fine job .

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not sure what a john deere square baker frame is, but it was a custom job made from 3x3 heavy wall square tubing. about 7ft by 4ft is the main platform, then the machine was so strong it started to bend itself, so had to rip it apart to weld a piece of I beam in there.

    • @ThoenWorks

      Most music attached to youtube videos probably comes from their audio library. Go to your channels creator studio, then look down in the "create" section for audio library.

    Did you design the log loader or did you make it as you went? Could you make a video of just the loader? Great machine

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks john, a little of both, it was well thought out, and planned, but changes were made as it was put together. unforeseen issues caused some rearranging. and yea I have some go pro footage from a few weeks ago ill post.

    Wow amazing build! Do you happen to have build plans?

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      build plans were a sharpie on a piece of scrap wood. just rough sketches. its a 'make it up as you go' kind of build. just go for it and fix issues when they arise. lots of thinking ahead, but no "plan" set in stone.

  • @lofman
    @lofman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, nice machine! Did you have any issues with the stacked cylinders not moving simultaneously? If so, how did you fix it?

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no I didn't come across that issue, the lines are split evenly so the pressure should be dispersed evenly. if not, they are bolted together on the pusher so any lag from one would be made up for by the other one. then again, the problem may be there and im not noticing it. something ill be keeping an eye on next time I run it, possibly hook a pressure gauge to each cylinder and check it there.

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      and thank you! worked hard on it!

    • @lofman
      @lofman 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that might be it, they are so close so it doesn't matter. I know of other people who have problems that they needed to sort out with some kind of flow limiting to tune in both cylinders. even though you have the same cylinders there are most often some small difference. two other questions, did you build the crane or is it bought? how is the hitch-extention extended, is it also a cylinder?

  • @camrevill5089
    @camrevill5089 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What did you use for the crane arms pivot where it attachs to the machine. Thanks

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the turret off of an 80's bucket truck.

  • @chasingchains
    @chasingchains 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So is there a benefit to stacking the cylinders instead of side by side?

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the wood varies so much in size that the stacked cylinders put some force on the top of the big logs too. itll split a piece 60+ inches across. keeps the force nice and straight down the machine. also kept everything small by stacking it. left plenty of room for controls on one side and motor on the other. side by side would work fine though.

    Allen you may need to change name unless you are part of the JD fam. John deer tractors, and the like.

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not claiming to be associated with John Deere, nor am I claiming this as a genuine JD machine. the only way I could get in trouble legally is if I tried to sell it as a John Deere. the stickers and paint were ordered from JD, and i have no plans to sell it. same as if I printed a John Deere T shirt for myself, that's fine, but if I sold one, I could be sued.

  • @johncraftenworth7847

    Is the crane necessary, given the side log lift function?

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Craftenworth yes because of the shear size of the wood being split. Some even too big to roll.

    • @allenbinger3067
      @allenbinger3067  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the description i say that because of my father's sawmill, I'm forced to split big and curved peices, even knots and swells
