Hey Simon, Watching you on Bargain Hunt. From Western Australia 29/7/24
@@cazrelda169 haha enjoy!
Returning the bag? That was a highlight for me😊
as a child in the 1950s we would put a halfpenny on the train track and bind it with a rag,the coin would then be the size of a penny so we would get double sweets in the penny slot machines.x.
I love the ingenuity of kids!
Haha genius!!
AWWWWAAAAHH!!!
I absolutely love your heart, giving away your finds to friends, returning lost stuff, cleaning up, feeding birds, taking time out for needy kitty 😺. Yep, you're in my top three mudlarks! XOXO
Aw thanks Mel!👍🏻🐾🧡
Gosh you’re a good fellow, not only do you clean up the foreshore, tell us about the history of your finds, take us places WE’D never go and tell us about the busiest city in the world, but you give some precious finds to your pals, who we know would kill to find those things themselves, you feed the wildlife, even throwing the bun into the water so they don’t have to eat the gravel with it, you obviously adore your cats and are an all-round good citizen! What a man, yes, a real good example of a proper human being! And we luv ya!❤️🦘🇦🇺😊
And a rip roarer of a kind thing to do, to phone Mark and return his valuables filled bag, on camera, for us to feel good about too. Bless you Simon. And I’d ask one of the ladies to put that SI token into a pendant or such for you. How amazing was that to find just the right initials for YOU!?!
@@yvonnepagan9912 thanks so much Yvonne appreciate that Mudlover👍🏻🧡🐾
What a smashing lark! Thanks for including us.
Cheers Jake👍🏻🐾🧡
Matt!!! Dude is the best, for real. Si, you need to drag him out more often, its been too long. I like his face and the noise that comes out of it ;)
Couldn't agree more!
I’m 76 and I remember as a child the term “three eypence” (I’m from the north) for one and a half old pennys! I think I’ve got a silver one in my collection.
Wow so cool!
The Christmas cup depicts a Wren. Traditionally associated with winter, and know as King of the birds.
Ah great cheers!👍🏻🐾🧡
If memory serves, the shell you found is a murex. It was used in ancient times for coloring or dyeing cloth. Great satchel handoff too ! You have a gift for "find"ing fascinating objects.
It sure is! A giant Atlantic murex!
Ah thanks Whitney!
You are right it is a Murex.
That was really cool to get the bag back to the owner ❤
It's amazing how things survive for so long .
Agreed!👍🏻🐾🧡
The bead is probably carnelian agate, the shell is a murex. Purple dye was extracted from the animal within them. Great that you were able to return the bag to it's owner. Thanks for the mud video!
So interesting regarding the dye. Thanks Karen!!
The Treasure Gods looked after you for being honest. Well Done that man!
Yes I like to think so👍🏻🐾🧡
You really are a very decent guy! Returning stuff, giving your friends cool finds. An all around good chap!
Thanks so much, I’ve been brought up well👍🏻🐾🧡
Great save on the bag! The tourists seemed appreciative!
Yes I think they loved the mini drama 😂
❤❤❤❤❤😊. Always good to see you out and about.
Amazing finds as always Si. Lovely to see Daisy getting a good old scratch 😺Thank you for taking us along xx Teresa ❤🇦🇺
Cheers Mudlover👍🏻🧡🐾
Been catching up this week on all your adventures from the past year (it's been one for me). Great seeing you still out there with your friends, getting up some great finds and creating your ingenious upcycles. Would be cool if you do a round-up sometime with your museum finds. I know they take ages to get back on those things but it'd be interesting to hear what they had to say about some of them. Also, hope His Lordship (Nelson) is recovered from his tooth extraction!
Great video give Cuffs the coin and when he finds his own he gives back the coin you gave him.
Nice idea
That was sooo cool finding that guys bag.. terrific that you could get it back to him. Fantastic finds today, thanks for taking us on your lark!
Cheers Jo👍🏻🐾🧡
Well done si, you're so kind. X
It’s nice to be nice👍🏻🐾🧡
So glad to see Matt, another great mudlark
Cheers Phylis 👍🏻🐾🧡
Thanks for the outing. Look forward to seeing what you do with the crystal.😊
Cheers Jane. I’m sure it will be used on a future project I’m sure
Hello from Southern Oregon USA, love the big spoon for your warlock ccauldron!😂
Cheers Laura👍🏻🐾🧡
Si, that little Black pipe is the same as the one I told you I found some years ago. Apparently our local museum told me it was one of the first pipes made, tiny pot as Tabasco was very expensive when it first was introduced into our country.
Tabasco? Lol, I know what you meant. Bother can get very hot 🥵
the squashed penny is done in an amusment arcade it stamps the event on it you can have yours done at the melelium wheel
Penny yes, ha’penny squished - never heard of that
Nice to see Matt again and an interesting haul of finds. Well done. I got 10/10 on spot the find. Woohoo!
Yes!!! Well done Anita. Hope you’re well sweetie👍🏻🐾🧡
So many great finds. Loved the book clasps and that tiny grey pipe. It was great to see the bag returned to it's owner. You did well Si. 😊
Cheers Mudlover👍🏻🐾🧡
That Gary Mills, Treasure Island record recorded on Decca you showed. You can see it was recorded in 1961 and produced by Dick Rowe who made himself very famous by turning down the Beatles the following year! George Harrison did tell him subsequently, that he ought to sign up the Rolling Stones, so he did all right in the end!
Haha good info!!
Does anyone else like the dark color of the clay pipes, caused by the mud, to be more attractive than the natural off-white color?
hey Si! Not sure if its a thing everywhere or not, but those "squished" pennies are a tourist-y souvenir here in the states (or in SF at the very least lol). There are little machines with a crank on the side, you put a penny in and crank it through some rollers till it comes out flat like that. Pretty cool to see it done with a coin that is so foreign to me!
Cheers. Yes I’ve heard of penny squash machine but not halfpenny ones over here. Don’t they stamp the name of the attraction on there too?
@@Sifinds yeah true, a lot of them let you put your name on there or the name of the attraction, but I have seen them without as well. Good to know I’m not the only one who thought the flattened halfpenny was so interesting.
Do you know around what time period the halfpenny was discontinued? As a Yank I have no real clue but I’m pretty certain you lot don’t still use them in circulation lol. But knowing when they fell out of use would give at least a rough indication of when that could’ve been squished.
Keep up the vids btw! Love your content so much. Had never heard of mudlarking before your channel, and the idea that you can stroll down a riverbank in the middle of your city and find coins, pipes, etc that are literally older than my entire country really blows my mind. Over here we get excited about something from the early 20th century, meanwhile for you guys that same thing would probably just be “in the way” of whatever artifact you’ve bent down to pick up for the first time since the Romans. Don’t ever forget that, you’re very lucky!!
@@wirebug42 yes I guess we can take it for granted sometimes. Half pennies were pre-decimalisation so that was in 1971
Belgium is waiting!!!!!!! Hurry up a bit .
😂
The rider on the horse looks medieval or, crusader? Funny if the Templars had them pressed out as souvenirs? Incentivize the little boys that they can grow up to be a Templar too!
Aloha Simon & Matt! Wow! now THAT'S a Spoon! Great finds!😊
Haha cheers!
Loved ALL the finds, the railing top made me yelp with laughter, have you seen that episode of ''The Detectorists''? The little black pipe was my favourite, but honestly I would be thrilled with any of them. Another Sunday afternoon winner, cheers!
Yes I remember that Detectorists episode. Such a funny show x
I do love that Charley 1 farthing, gorgeous.
Might that little black pipe be an Op1um pipe?
Wow, that was a bit cool wasn't it, getting the bag boathooked.
I love having luck in the muck with Si such a sweet person ! love your videos soooooooooo much!
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
I’ve been wondering where Matt has been! You guys make the best videos when you’re mistaking together!
Mistaking? Hahaha that too 😉
@@Sifinds 😂😂 😳WTH? Who would even say that? *Mudlarking. I think my auto correct may be non-English speaking.
@@amypaparone55 haha. I forgive ya 😉
This video was full of great finds
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
You certainly found many interesting treasures. I have never seen the book clasps before. I always learn something new from your vlogs.
Cheers JoeEllen👍🏻🐾🧡
Could the bead be a carnelian.
Great shout ⭐️🐾🧡
I have several lovely old chandelier crystals and use them as Christmas tree decorations. They catch the lights.
Great idea Mudlover👍🏻🐾🧡
Always a joy. It's lovely to escape with your adventures. Thank you.
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
You are such a kind human being Si, wish there was more people like you ❤️
Aw thanks. I’d like to think most people would’ve done the same
Always feels good to do the right thing!
What a great ‘Si’ find the token was😄, enjoyed watching as always, thank you.
Cheers Charlotte👍🏻🐾🧡
Thank you.
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
Nice finds Si , that leatherman is worth few quid
Cheers Andy, yes hence he was happy it was returned 👍🏻🐾🧡
@@Sifinds fairplay good karma 👌
SIMON BOURNE awesome findings. I really enjoyed watching the beautiful video .
Lots of coins n tokens n seals....
Love your social work of handing over the bag 🎒. Today I am watching the video from train 🚆.
With love from SAM
Guwahati, Assam, India 🇮🇳 ♥️
Cheers Sam!! 👍🏻🐾🧡
I live not too far from a colonial-times-village-attraction called Allaire in NJ, and I have fond memories of going there as a kid and squishing pennies on the train track there. Never had a problem finding my penny afterward, though.
Ah thanks for sharing 👍🏻🐾🧡
I think that Nicola found the same bead on the foreshore this weekend. I know I'm late to the party!
Nice variety of finds! Great video!!
There is a place near where I live where you could put pennies on the tracks and I always found them after they were squished! This was in southern California in the U.S.A. I am envious of you because of course there is nowhere where I live that you could find all of the goodies that you find.
Thanks for another great video; sorry about your drone, though!
My dad worked for the Milwaukee Road Railway when I was a kid, and we lived just a few blocks from the very busy -- back then -- tracks in St. Paul, MN. We would put pennies on the tracks, and they got flattened much more than yours, to the point that there would be nothing discernable on them afterwards. We didn't do it often, and never with anything but pennies (our smallest denomination here in the US), because every coin was currency, and back in the 60s, even a penny might buy a gum ball from a machine at the drug store. A flattened one, not so much!
The closest I've come to mudlarking was walking along those old tracks as a kid, and finding bits and bobs that had fallen off the trains. From taconite pellets (an iron ore product from the mines in northern Minnesota) to broken RR lanterns tossed aside, as well as unidentifiable bits that were often the most interesting of all. We once found some piles of mystery grain that we took home and spread on the ground. It grew quickly, and we were able to identify it as oats. Our pet rabbits loved the immature stems, and the plants re-seeded themselves and grew in that plot for years. Fun where you find it!
Amazing story! Keep em coming x
lethaerman knife.. nice ... those are great and expensive
Also, how ironic that I just came across your page and you found a bottle with my name and I’m as bald as bald can be. 😂😂
Really enjoyed the video and all the finds
I've grown up in a town that has a train station and yard all my life. .. When I was around 15 or so I got it in my head, "hey I bet nobody always found their "track coins" flattened because they usually bounce after being hit and end up just inside the few inches of ballast under the rail..." Well I took a coffee can down to the station and in about an hour I had half a can of -flat money-..!! I was stopped by a lineman, " You think it's funny to put coins on the track?!? That's not safe, I can report you etc... etc.... I looked up and said very disrespectfully ,,, You think I'd put this much on the tracks?.....(showed him the half full coffee can)... He smirked, and said,, "I wont say anything,, if you split that with me.... I smiled and didn't mind... Fond memory to this day..
Haha great story. Sad that a grown man wanted half your loot 😆
@@Sifinds Doin' his job, while doin' the job. . . 😉
I always learn something new, have a good laugh and enjoy your kind heart! Dating tip: that one definitely made me laugh. You're a real treasure, Si! I wonder if that old squished half-penny was pressed in one of those machines that you put a penny in and you get it back like that as a souvenir.
That's what I was thinking. Touristy places have them machines to flatten out a souvenir penny. I have many of them from my travels!
Awesome lark, thank you
Cheers David👍🏻🧡🐾
So cool that you were able to reunite the bag with its owner!
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
Good morning Si, South Carolina , USA. LOVING THE HISTORY. And you too of course. ❤😊
Cheers Deb!👍🏻🐾🧡
THere were small machines, the size of bubble gum machines, that you could put your penny in and it squashes and stretch the penny. Many were at tourist shops
Crazy finds Simon. Good of you for giving the bead to Flo and maybe the coin to your other friend.
Cheers Annie👍🏻🐾🧡
You know that little metal horse with the rod outThe bottom reminds me of old horse racing games where there would be a row of horses that would go down the track.
I wonder if that's what it could be part of
Yes it does! 👍🏻🐾🧡
I am from Malta and that coin would be from the times of the Knights of St John. Wignacourt built aqueducts which transported water from Rabat to Valletta.
Yes! He paid for their production I understand..
@@Sifinds indeed. I live quite close to them. 😁
33:48 I am indeed hooked on mudlarking videos 😂
Well done for being a good person Si 😉
Cheers Wasp. Hope you’re well sweetie 👍🏻🐾🧡
Love your larks and finds. Also the animals, water scenes, and especially the history lessons.

That bead could be rhyolite...
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
I thought when you said in the intro, "this could only mean one thing" that Matt was going to kiss your cheek.(as per usual)
Haha! Yeah! I’m owed a kiss 😘
Such delicate little toy finds today!
Cheers Deb👍🏻🐾🧡
It's so cool to watch your videos. Some of the stuff you find is amazing.
Cheers Gaz👍🏻🐾🧡
What a variety of treasures you've found! It's great that you returned the bag. I loved all the trader's tokens. The flattened coin was interesting. Here in the states there are machines that you put two quarters (or sometimes more) and a penny. You choose the imprint and it presses the penny flat with the impression. Then they have little books with clear pockets to keep your pennies in. We have a couple. They are souvenirs for interesting places you've gone.
Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡Yes heard of those small penny squishing machines. Not for ha’pennies tho
Wow Si, that's the best Rose farthing I've seen! They are normally totally blasted!.
You’re right they are. Every now and again you get a good one👍🏻🐾🧡
The bird on the cup is a snow bunting. Native to colder countries, they come here in the winter but are very rare now. 🐦
Ah that’s so interesting. Cheers Mudlover!👍🏻🐾🧡
Yes! We would put pennies on the train tracks!
Cool that you found the mudlarkers bag.
Returning that bag was brilliant! Bird on Xmas log: partridge in a pear tree? Old brown bead: jasperware? All good. Thnx.
Cheers Jeannie👍🏻🐾🧡
Great video Simon. Especially like the book clasps. So nice to see Matt out on a mudlarking adventure with you again. Always nice to see friends enjoying an outing together. The squished coin you found is possibly from a tourist attraction. Some places have a machine that you put your coin into and it is pressed or you pay a fee and get a memory token from there in that oval shape. Have a great week and please keep safe. 😊🇨🇦
Cheers Diann👍🏻🐾🧡
You’re a good guy Si!
Cheers Hazel👍🏻🐾🧡
Productive day AND you got to do a good deed
Yes perfect!
NICE FINDS TODAY SI...HE WAS LUCK THAT YOU ARE AN HONEST PERSON BECAUSE THAT MULTITOOL IS WORTH A COUPLE OF POUNDS AND WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE. IT'S A GOOD THING THAT HE PUT HIS CONTACT INFO INSIDE AND THAT YOU ARE AN HONEST GUY!!!

I have just come across a man who has a large moustache which was ended in a curl, a big curl I told I was impressed.
And impressed you should be 🥸
Great one Si😊
Cheers Barb👍🏻🐾🧡
Yes, the crystal is from s chandelier. I have one like it. I made a pendant for a necklace with it.
Another fine video this day. The clay pipe finds were excellent. The Thames always gives smart finds. See you on the next, Si! Cheers Si! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Cheers Martin!👍🏻🐾🧡
Do oth❤er places have machines that squash coins and emboss a new design on them? Here in the States at some touristy places and museums they have such machines. Different types, i.e. hand cranked or motorized. You put a penny or quarter or whatever the particular machine is set up for, in one slot and the money to pay to make it go in another and then turn it on or crank as the case may be. Out comes your coin, smashed and elongated, with words or a design pertaining to the venue on it. My daughter, now 38 years old, had quite a collection when she was young. ❤
We have those in Germany. I love them, and always keep a few extra shiny five cent pieces in my wallet just in case I come across a souvenir machine. My favourite ones I glued magnets on the back so I can display them on the fridge
Great to see you back on the Thames ❤
Cheers Sally👍🏻🐾🧡
So many cool finds Si and returning the bag was fantastic 👍
Nice to see Matt with you again ! Great video and finds , you still can't resist swigging out of that bottle can you ?!!!!
Haha. Nope 🍾
Oh that’s amazing. I’m half Maltese.
Great lark!! Great finds!! Hi to Daisy💕😺😺😺💫
Cheers Jackie👍🏻🐾🧡
Great you were able to return that guy's bag and stuff.....although, the Leatherman tool is illegal for UK carry as it has a lockable blade.....he needs to be very careful! (Annoying as hell that the lunatics who love to go around stabbing each other have ruined legitimate use of tools for so many!)
Love your films. 😊
The large spoon makes me think of a stuffing spoon. They are big with long handle for digging out the stuffing from inside the cooked bird. In England I imagine you’d use it more for a cooked goose.
Good idea - we have Turkey over here 🇬🇧
😊 fun you watch these adventures. In the US, in 1800s, those little clay pipes were called Penny Pipes. Because as you said...cheap to replace! I just learned that watching a video by a man who digs for old glass bottles in buried trash...usually old out house holes that were filled long ago. For some reason people dropped lots of old bottles down the toilet holes!
Yes digging an old cess pit is on my bucket list 😂 for real
Hello Mudlover, from Tennessee sending you hugs and to let you know you have a great heart, great finds Si.
