Short overview of how to execute and apply one of the most underrated (IMO) kicking techniques in martial arts: Yoko Geri, or Side kick.
This kick is present in multiple martial arts, what I'm demonstrating here is the Kyokushin Karate version.
Yoko Geri is useful in all sorts of martial arts contexts, including Karate, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Taekwondo, Sanda and more.

I did Muay Thai for a little bit and always wanted to add this kick to my arsenal, so thanks for the explanation!
I use more side kick than I use front kick. I find it more versatile and easier to pull
Which causes the most pain; front kick or sidekick?
@@meandyou2046 it depends on the person. I'll say this though, in open stance side kick is the king of straight kicks. Closed stance not so much
You can also do that with a longer (jumping) side step if your target is farther away. My instructor gave an example that if you see someone attacking your closed one and the only obtion to stop him (you are like 3-5 meters away) is to move fast (jumping) sidestep and kick the guy off before he stabs etc someone and then just beat the hell out of him as a real gentleman does.
Lol.. love the explanation. And description. Ibwas taught same variation.. Bruce Lee called it the burning side kick or just burning kick. Shuffling in to cover ground fast.!! Very effective if timing and all line up !!
@@macmacdonald4996 Thanks man, Burning (side) kick sounds as a great name for the "trick" kick. And thanks Lee.
@@bogse no worries brother. we are all supposed to share correct knowledge to help our brothers and sisters. at least that was what I was taught. but again...I am a bit old school at 56 !! peace and God bless..yes..look up Bruces burning kick...very similar !!
It is very useful kicking tools for self-defense.
Well explained, Thank you.
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻
I sometimes purposely miss low right roundhouse kicks so people will step into this. If I'm lucky, they even through straight right punches as they come in, amplifying my kick's impact and making it more likely to catch the liver. I find it works especially well against Muay Thai (which is a pretty popular style) because they don't tend to use kicks like this. As a result, an opponent overshooting a round kick in their world is usually a good time for them to attack. It's especially nice that you called out touching the floor as a way to help reverse your momentum quickly for the followup.
Definitely! Linear kicks in general tend to work very well vs Muay Thai styles, especially combined with chambered kicks I feel it throws off some of their usual timings.
Thank you for your comment! 🥋
Is kicking with the back leg as effective
It can be but it’s slow so it needs set up!
@@SaikouKarate For me I do punch’s and stuff to set it up very good power shot (I sent my opponent to the ground
Fantastic really. Love your vids 👍🙂
🙏🏻🙏🏻
I watched your videos and applaud you for showing those kicks. They are really useful. Some Kyokushin dojo I know, disallow "Taekwondo" kicks. That's because their seniors are Gujuryo purists and believe in snap back. They're not open to learning.
Thank you!!
Wow, I’ve never heard of that, that’s kind of funny haha.🤦🏻♂️
funny because Oyama itself teaches this kick to early taekwondo 😬
As much as I love this kick and still use it I must confess that my technique in executing it sucks! Unlike Mawashi Geri & Ushiro Ura Mawashi I can't use the lack of flexibility reason for this. It's gonna take me months of drilling to effectively to finally have good technique with this kick.
I would love to see you break down the spinning version of this kick since I try to do it but instead it looks more like the Ushiro Geri instead of the Ushiro Yoko Geri.
Btw what is your stance on using the heel as opposed to blade of the foot?
This kick requires a different type of flexibility and strength in the hips, just doing slow kick extensions at increasing height will definitely help you improve this kick.
Sure! I will look into comparing a standard Ushiro Geri with the Yoko Geri version. I can say I think the Yoko version can work pretty well l when you’re advancing forward and want to continue combination striking in that direction afterwards, but IMO in other situations I would use the standard a Ushiro Geri instead.
For Yoko Geri when you blade your foot, you also pull your toes in towards yourself, making your heel protrude outwards, so naturally you will hit with the footblade first which is good, but depending on the angle you may connect with the heel also.
@@SaikouKarate so I need to ask something else any tips/exercises on how to insure that your side kick form is using the blade of the foot? Because I'm normally doing the side kick with the heel and my Sensei hasn't had use do the sidekick with the blade yet.

A good thing is to focus extra on pulling back your big toe towards you, that should angle your foot correctly! But I think it’s pretty hard to hit only with footblade and not use your heel at all. Usually you will hit a bit with both.
@@SaikouKarate OSU! Arigato Gozaimasu!
I put 5x into ligs and tends to get a five foot immediate hop on folks whom idly looking for assistance instead of active getting the red herring or fish 🐟.
I'm ignorant of marital arts except for what I see on TV so some of my questions may seem a bit strange.
That being said...
Is the intention of this kick to make contact with the heel of your foot? I ask because it looks like it and also the action of adding some torque to that kick.
It can be the heel, the top footblade or a combination of both! 👌🏼
@@SaikouKarate thanks!
Esa técnica de kick boxing
My favourite kick. But it seems to be underutilised in Kyokushin unlike Full contact Karate or Taekwondo
It requires a bit more space than you are usually able to get in Kyokushin, so not a lot of people get good at using it unfortunately. It's worth practicing though!
Do you push with this kick
The kick is chambered and extended in a snapping motion and getting pushed is a natural consequence of being hit by this kick, if the kickers balance is correct (not backwards leaning) and posture is straight. However the goal of the kick is not to push, but to cause damage. It’s probably not beneficial for the technique if you imagine a pushing motion.
@@SaikouKarate ohhh thank you I was having trouble
Do you push off the back leg to go through the opponents is that a variation or a choice?
Thank you for your videos! Osu!
Osu thank you for watching 🙏🏻
If you think the skip in yoko geri isn't strong. Go check out the old school American kickboxing.
And it's not as telegraphed as the step in.
It is strong, just less than step in.
Of course.
Sensei.. is your base style Kyokushin? Or something else... you SEEM to have some other cross training. Just curious as to YOUR base style.. ty.. again. Good content. thank you !!! For keeping them short / succinct. I can wTxh 2-5min vids several times throughout the day. 30 mins plus ?? Hell NO !! LOL
It’s complicated 😂 but you are right.
Basically I trained in this order: Judo, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, MMA, Kyokushin, Kickboxing, back to Kyokushin.
I would definitely say my base style is Kyokushin today, but I have integrated my past experience into it!
It’s great to hear you like the videos, and the length of them. We try to fit as much content as possible into 1.5 - 2 minutes.👊🏼
@@SaikouKarate awesome.. ty for clarification.. so mine is very similar :)..
Started with full contact kickboxing early 80's.. no real order per se here..but TKD, ATKD 🙄, Shotokoan 3x over 20 yrs.. Goju-Ryu x2 (over yrs) Mu Duk Kwan briefly, some Tai Chi, Karado (hybrid style) , Chinese Kenpo, Amer. Kenpo, JKD and a bit of Kali /Escrima.. some traditional Jiuy Jitsu, and Vee Jitsu Te (Prof. Visitacion's hybrid of traditional Jits with FMA and Aikido mixed in -NYC) Got ranked in JKD 6 yrs ago at 50 yrs old ..(FINALLY !! LOL) and did some full contact MMA as an Amat. Was a powerlifter too... NO...not like Bolo Yeung !! I wish !! hahaha
Now just broken n rusty trying to scrape the rust off and get teaching again. And YES truly enjoy the SHORT video with LEGIT content. I think you guys are about top 10 maybe even top 5 for traditional here. Top 5 for ME.. cuz ya keep it brief.. !!! Lol... love to see your take on crescent and reverse / spin crescents. Don't do jump kicks any more. WI do occasional spins. I also must say that side kick is great as a follow up missed crescent as well as roundhouse. And advanced, ya don't tap foot to floor to rebalnce/align. Go to half chamber and fire it off. Just a tid bit I was taught.. bit balance must be on piint!! Again, as you pointed out.. hips and foot position. Love it guys. Thx !!!
@@macmacdonald4996 Very nice 🙂 That's a long and extremely varied background! I have some catching up to do... haha.
Thank you again for your very encouraging comments and complements, it means a lot! We will certainly do our best to make future videos equally liked or even more!
@@SaikouKarate you have ZERO catching up to do sir...I am 56 , and have been playing in the arts since 18...about a dozen to 15 yrs of SERIOUS training....just a simple sensei / sifu here. Old , rusty and broken.-attempting to find my way back...YOU guys are very encouraging !! back to the basic Nuts and Bolts...Great work and thx for your "availability" many wont even answer a posted question. !! they do NOT get viewed further and definitely NOT followed. I am picky who I follow. must be legit and true with authenticity. you guys made the grade in My book, thank you again. and your Humility- is exemplary sir !! so a question for a "Native speaker " please. I have read repeatedly, that "OUS/OOS" is NOT a correct term , that is is considered disrespectful and even derogatory to Native/ Traditional speakers and practitioners. ....that "Hai" is much more correct... your input please Sensei?!? and Regards and Respect, from Northern Maine, USA :-)
@@SaikouKarate they are ALWAYS honest, unfortunately sometimes I Lose political correctness. I NEVER want to disrespect. just putting that out there !
Great! Thank you for information sensei. I typed for kyokushin side kick in the serch box but found only this which I wanted exactly. You have shown yourelf as like bruce lee in the thumbnail of the video; that's not good man bc i see no one is flying through the air in the whole video and your kick is also different than jkd side kick of bruce lee..Lmao😂😂😂 Btw Bruce lee said, "Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it."
Thank you for watching 🙏
I value my friend (and his ribs) too much to actually be throwing full power flying side kicks at him 😂
Makes for a funny thumbnail though!
