I suggest jujiken (十字剣) which means 'cross sword' because if a japanese blacksmith produced something like this back then after being inspired by european swords they would probably name it something similar

Faltana?
The Honor Harrington series had swords designed this way in Weber's "Field of Honor", a katana pattern blade and a Western style hilt.
Oh yeah! Except they just called them swords. Sooo not sure which name I like best. Either way, that is one of my favorite series.
So... This is basically a katana blade on a longsword hilt.
It would be interesting to see how it compares to a longsword blade with a katana-style hilt.
Not sure why you said "basically", that's literally what it is.
@@TheChiog *"That's basically the same thing!":* Looks and sounds slightly less annoying than the _"literally"_ one so, I'll take his way in this case _(but yes, you're "basically" right as well \s)._
There is the term Nanban Tsuba where the tsuba was western influences. Maybe a Nanban O-katana since they changed the whole grip.
I think it will have a balance problem, since a longsword relies on the weight of the pommel for balance, and a katana hilt has no pommel.
@@ccelik97 how about "this is a katana blade on a longsword hilt" and leave out the "triggerwords"
I propose that this fine blade be officially dubbed the Tyranth! After its creator.

That sword is clearly a Shaditana.
Correct
This is the one.
I agree with this, on the provision that it only gets to be called the “shaditana” after it gets a custom back-mounted “shabbard”.
You mean Shatana.
Thats the shorter version
I definitely think adding the original stingray/snake skin, wrap and pin from the katanas handle would really pull one of these together
Ochion is my suggestion for its name. O from O-katana, chion from falchion. Sounds like Ocean which means vast sea and I think that metaphorically represents the Asian and European elements.
Okay i like it
But what about Faltana?
@@mundanestream5524 yeah I gotta say that works better, or just really kludge it up like Falkana. just sounds rad. the o- prefix just means 'big' so... it shouldn't be all that the katana part is contributing to the name.
Apparently the word falchion derives from a root meaning 'sickle' so one could maybe do a translate and add 'kama' into the name of this thing.

@@gostislavszaposki Hail Satana!
I am so in love with these "Asian fusion" blades you guys have done. In a fantasy setting I think they are the ultimate elvish blades. So cool.
Based on how Miyamoto Musashi talks about swords, I've often thought that he might have wielded his katana more like a military saber than a longsword. To that end I'd like to see a swept-hilt or basket-hilt katana and wakizashi combo.
That's the thing, this clickbait channel tries to get you to click by saying dumb things like "katana SUCKS, we made it BETTER!" when in reality the katana wasnt supposed to be used like a longsword where youd get into these grapple binds with a huge cross guard. If that's what you find yourself doing when katana sparring then you're doing it wrong. Obviously the Japanese didn't feel the need to have a larger guard otherwise they would have made them larger easily. And we do find examples with larger guards occasionally.
@@shepherd2148 The question is if being able to do that sort of grapple binds makes you more likely to win
Doubt it. He emphasized using a shorter than average katana with both hands for control and speed over anything else. His dual wielding gimmick is just that, a gimmick; when talking about real.combat he preferred things that were more reliable and gave the user the most options, including grappling.
@@leonardomarquesbellini
That's literally the opposite of what Musashi says in his book. He emphasized learning to wield a sword in one hand from the start of your training. He says he doesn't like two-handing a sword, because it limits your movements and restricts your hands. He actually says that it's not speed, but rhythm that wins a duel; striking too fast makes your blows sloppy and too much power puts you off balance.
As far as calling dual wielding a gimmick, rapier/dagger duelists would disagree. Regardless, the way Musashi views it, he effectively said that because the swordsmen of his country wore two swords, it's better to use both to survive, than to die with one of them dangling uselessly at your side.
There's a whole lot more evidence for Musashi's dueling style being one-handed, but I'm not writing an essay here. If you take the time to read Musashi's words, there's no way you could mistake that his dueling style was anything other than one-handed. He probably didn't dual-wield in all situations, but I'm very certain he preferred one-handed, because he said so himself and I'll take his word over yours.
@@yashuacanno8019 as another who tries to understand musashi-donos words completely , i would agree you are right on the money .

This is basically what I always thought Mihawk's giant sword from One Piece which you covered in an earlier video was: A giant katana with an even more oversized crossguard.
@Shadiversity With all the "katana vs _____" and Skallagrim recently mentioning the Shashka, I wonder how they compare. It'd probably come down to two hands vs one hand and blade balance. Regardless, with most of the videos on Shashkas seeming to be being flurashes/dances, while the katana is portrayed as a more deliberate weapon I find the contrast intriguing.
Call that your "Messer in law"
Or if Skal got his Skalchion, then this can be the Shadchion.
@TYRANTH_ It's an Aumetachi!
Cause it's was made by Australians, and it's a Messer tachi
I believe its only considered a Tachi if the grip/tang itself is also curved.
Yeah, the depictions of a "tachi" that I'm seeing online are more about the handle part being complimentary to the blade part's curvature. Even the ones that seem to have straight looking handles still imply a little bit of curvature at the ends of them and I guess it comes from the hilt's curved or curved-ish (at the end of it I mean) shape inside.
Usually was but doesn't have to be. It's more about the way it's carried and the edge geometry. And length but that's more when compared to a Katana and not Ookatana.
Most katanas also have a slightly curved hilt/tang.
Along with the relevant scabbard ornaments.
@@oxvendivil442 yeah most katanas indeed have curved hilts. Unlike most swords that have curve on the hilt curves towards the blade. Katana handles have slight curve towards the spine almost like the entire sword has slight continual arc. Tachis usually tend to be more drastically curved from the hilt
A Western crossguard may be advantageous, and a pommel may improve balance, but a threaded rat-tail is the WORST possible way to hold anything together that will ever be subjected to impact and vibration.
I can't wait for the cursed longsword with katana hilt
At 8:30 I'm with Tyranth on this. It is a falcion. If he'd re-riveted the scales after trimming them to match the exact shape of the tang (I'd hate to try wielding a sword with that thin of a handle) then it'd be a messer. "Scimitar" really is just a term to imply a xenos (alien, as in from outside of Western Europe) manufacture to add a "coolness" and awe factor to something that really isn't all that different from what was made locally.
If tyrinth wants a different name for it how about Falchana with the ch pronounced the same way as it is in Falchion?
I like this. I was thinking "Faltana," but yours might be a little cooler.
How bout falc'hata?
@@dustinbrandel59 Sounds too much like falcata imo... unless that was intentional.
This is something I would imagine if the Japanese back then would adapt, If they would see any benefit of a European longsword, they would probably adopt it or merch it with their style of sword, like they did with merching their armor with Portuguese armor. But there a reason why they preferred their weapons that way. Chinese and Korean scrolls discribate the Japanese sword men as very good to the point they went to Japan to learn their style of fencing and made their own style of Tachi swords.
How to make a messer:
Step 1 Buy a katana
Step 2 Give said katana a longsword handle and cross guard

Maybe I'm biased, but I think it speaks smoother than any other suggestion and it can be pronounced by both cultures it was born of.
Some name suggestions:
Scimi-tachi
seitachi 西太刀 (lit. west tachi)
wayo- tachi 和洋太刀 you know, because o-tachi becomes wayo-tachi, literally meaning a Japanese-western hybrid tachi
Basically a heron marked sword. The bevel of a katana would be the best design on a sword that never loses its edge and is almost indestructible, and the European guard design would be the ideal hand protection. Though I think a complex guard more akin to a swiss saber would better pair with a long o-katana like blade for a fantasy sword like the heron marked blade.
Just called it a Heron Blade in reference to the Wheel of Time's Heron Marked blade, because both this one and the first one both match the description of those swords to a frightening level.
Once the heron, to set his path.
Twice the heron, to name him true.
... _Huh._ That is literally what's happening here.
Yes, but didn't Jordan describe the quillons as more similar to the longsword that Tyranth is holding at the end of the vid? Still a great name! I Second!
@@LangThoughts Maybe? It's been over a decade since I read Wheel so it very well could
My favorite weapon in blade and sorcery (from the mmp mod) is the bastard saber, which is extremely similar to this. So I suggest that it’s a bastard saber.
In theory its actually becomes a two-handed falchion or a grand-messier or two handed/great or bastard saber
It's a good theory, don't wanna look like a dick, but, it is in fact just a katana with European falchion style guard and a Chinese crossbowman sword hilt construction and a European pommel. The katana is the blade part, so fitting a katana to different fittings doesn't make it not a katana
Great work once again, the finish on this one is super clean!!!!
This is like something you might find half way along the silk road in ancient times,
made by an excentric wondering blacksmith with a passion for weapon fusion!!!!
The Okatimatar.
What would be the pros and cons of a katana with a swept hilt like many renaissance rapiers have? Not all rapiers had a full knuckle guard extending to the pommel and in theory a swept hilt with an extension of the handle to accommodate a second hand could look and perform amazingly well.
Oh no! They actually did it.
Yarō no katana, bastard katana, since it's the mux of the blade of a katana and the hilt of a European blade (not tryingto insultthe design, referringto it as like a bastard sword).
You know, Red Dragon make a steel version of that pommel form the synthetic training swords that was used as a replacement on the original katana conversion.
crafter's pride, and then Shad just cuts that noodle like a chef cutting a cucumber to pieces, cackling crazily... what a sight. :)
a possible name could be hayabusachi, because falchion = falcon... at least it sounds like it. also this sword seems to be fast. I bet it offers an extra attack each round, just like that.
Personally I think it would have been better to just made a tsuba with a crossguard.
Inspired by a crossguard with dual side rings. I'm picturing a larger more protective version of the Musashi style tsuba with quillons. That way it wouldn't be moving as far away from its traditional Japanese design. But rather, keeping the overall Japanese design and feel, but bringing in the idea of more hand protection.
Windlass heron marked blade had something like that
@@dhampirdp3489 Yeah... But that was an abomination of terrible design. It was basically a tsuba with a god awful and pitifully small crossguard above it. Also, it was ugly as hell and blatantly just a tsuba and a crossguard that were never intended to go together, slapped together on a single sword..
What I'm picturing could be made from a single piece of 5-8mm sheet steel. By either cutting it out by hand, milling it or laser cutting it out. Some filing work to round over the edges. Then assemble the sword.
I had a similar thought. Maybe a long tsuba, not full crossguard size but bigger so that it can actually protect the hand kinda like a flat, oblong cup hilt lol
@@benjaminotalora363 historical Katana and Tachi did have larger tsuba. The smaller type we commonly see these days comes from the standardisation of Katana during peace times.
@@RainMakeR_Workshop ohh really? Guess I'll have to make some research. I've only seen display pictures where its not easy to look at the details
Katalchion or Katanchion.
Since it's half katana and half european sword, it should NOT have a scimitar in the name.
Would be cool to see same thing but with katana hand wrap instead of simple thin cord. Probably would have been able to improve balance by starting with oversized pommel and grind it off, checking balance till you get it right. That or could do a sectioned pommel where one could add spacer weights to tune balance slightly forward or back. Loved the format, excellent episode! Tachimitar maybe? Only need to drop the s from scimitar and h jump one place forward to interlock both. Tashadtar to bring channel into it!
If the quillions were angles or curved up, and the handle was a nicer material, I would wager this would be closer to what a heron mark blade should have looked like.
The o-bastard
Love your vids.... As an American, don't EVER use inches and feet to cater to us yanks.....
I honestly like both of the blades you did Tyranth. Yes the first one was made with cheap metal parts sub par material but you did the scimitana well. Now what I call the scimidachi looks amazing. And is one of the things I was doing with my next sword build.
An arming sword with Japanese fittings would look a little bit like a Gladius.
Maybe a faltana would be a good name? As for new ideas and cursed combinations, really the only oddity that I'd want to see tested would be where do you draw the line between a sword with a really long handle, and a spear?
Something like a Naginata?
My primary suggestion for the name is, rather than jamming words from different languages together, use a japanese word that you've incorporated into the design itself so that it still *sounds* elegant so that Tyranth doesn't get an aneurism every time Shad speaks it's name.
'Katana' = sword.
Google translate says that it's primary design change 'Cross' = Kurosu.
Mash *those* two words together instead. "Kurotana", "Karosu", "Kurotasu" (also includes "kuro" in it, and that blade has a lot of black around it), etc.
Now, that could just be google translate being weird and sounding it out with an accent, or the japanese didn't have a word for it and it got adopted from english almost as-is.
To solve that, here's a suggestion that doesn't require you do double check for real-word adjacent japanese-sounding titles:
"Crosstana". Boom. Crossguarded katana. Easy to remember, descriptive, same number of syllables, sounds alright.
I like that (both Kurotana and Crosstana).
Defining swords by their handle construction is such a "medieval guild technicality" thing to do. If you ignore that, it's a Katana with a crossguard.
(Or a Scimitar/Falcion/Messer with a Katana blade. But that re-introduces stupid criteria like the handle construction or non-applicable criteria like European vs Asian sword.)
And it would set a sensible precedent for when these boys go ahead and re-hilt a Katana with a basket hilt (Basketana), or a knuckle-bow hilt (Knucklebow-tana).
Seeing Tyranth use a Dremel makes me feel like less of a layman 😄
The wanderer's blade (since a person who travels might have come across different swords and decided to integrate parts of them into his own blade)
Katilij. Spirit of the Katana and Kilij. ... or go all Japanese, maybe "Tsurugi no Tamashii" (剣の魂), which translates to "Soul of the Sword" or "Spirit of the Blade." This name captures the essence of the katana while alluding to its fusion with the crossguard or "bodyment of the cross,"
Calling it now, the longsword with katana hilt is gonna be like a two handed Jian. A "Chu Jian", I believe they call it. 😂
Madmen all of you!
I would be curious to find out what someone who has specialized in Japanese swordsmanship would think of this sword.
It's for this reason why I considered the Tachi/Ogatana the equivalent (in terms of length) to bastard swords rather than the Uchigatana. THe blade lengths are more comparable. On the other hand the Uchigatana is closer to an arming sword with a longsword (two-handed) handle
Hi guys! I dunno if you know about the Honor Harrington scifi books, but the setting features a nation, Grayson, which basically reverse engineered their swordsmanship from books and movies. Hence their swords are basically described like this.
I find it hard to believe that a thousand years of Japanese sword smiths did not come up with a adequate cross guard.
I feel like it would be a lot stronger if you didn’t cut and weld on the threaded piece for the pommel and just cut the katanas tang to size and threaded it with a die
