these LYRICS "It's good to be young But let's not kid ourselves It's better to pass on through those years and come out the other side With our hearts still beating Having stared down demons And come back breathing" THAT IS SO POWERFUL. OH MY GOD.
This song reminds me when I lived in PA all alone and had no friends and was going through a bad break up and losing my best friend to suicide. It just always brings back tears.
You can watch them sing it at Carnegie hall in a couple of videos and it's pretty good about as good as this as this and they sang a few other songs as well
nerdfighter slash's random epic channel I actually got this version from their performance at Carnegie Hall, I just cleaned it up a little on my own!:D
HAHAHA, I'd never made that connection before, but when Mr. Mountain Goat himself was 17, he was definitely climbing walls, craving a certain mineral/crystal
I get your whole thing. I really do. Love your style. But you cry way to much. I'm a nobody with a lot of talent. I dont use getting beat up or being abused to make my name.
The Sunset Tree album is really the one where he talks about himself. Nearly every other song is told from the point of view of a fictional character that he made up.It's not "crying", it's storytelling. Sad stories just happen to be more of his thing, just like horror stories are Steven King's thing. People have types of art they create, and his are sad stories told through the medium of music, for the most part. I don't see how that could be called "crying".
its not about using how you were beat up as a way to get attention. its about writing about life experiences and empathizing with others who share those experiences. I see his music, the art he creates, as a tool to bring happiness to those who share similar experiences and may feel alone and isolated.

It's sad because I think we can all think of a person who fits this song. And sometimes sadly, it's ourselves
Always found it empowering for those of us who were that kid in high school. High heels or not. Wish it were in a record. Beautiful song.
I'm glad I had a friend like you during the best and worst of times. I hope you're in a better place man. R.I.P James.
Thank you. When I first heard this song, I got those shivers you get when you hear a song that touches you in a way you cannot describe.

I heard this song on a Lollapalooza webcast one year. Had never heard the Mountain Goats before. Became an instant fan.
When I hear those opening chords, I always thing of "Overkill" by Colin Hay.

Those seven dislikes are the mean insomniacs.

Well, were you abused or beat up growing up? It's a pretty major part of one's life.

Brian Greenly Exactly. If you can use such a negative experience in such a positive way, why the hell not?
Well, the important thing is that we now know that you understand everything.
