As a widow, I was met with the daunting task and emotional rollercoaster of decluttering my house and effectively my life but in that journey I learned valuable lessons that I want to share with you. My first video on decluttering raised some repeat questions and so I share this video with you all in the hope that you too can declutter like the best of them and indeed become a decluttering pro! I love helping you and so if you have any questions please pop them here - I answer all of them personally and if my channel resonates with you then please consider subscribing - it helps me so much. there is so much truth to once it’s in a storage unit you forget about it. 😂 when we moved across the country not that long ago, we lived off a few duffle bags and items from a thrift store for 6 months. after that - when we finally did get our things. i got rid of insane amounts. you find the joy is who you’re with and what your doing- not the things. ☺️
I'm so glad you brought up the cost of a storage unit as opposed to the value of the items that you put in the unit. Most people don't weigh one against the other to determine whether or not it is really worth it. Such a valuable point!
Thank you for watching and commenting. I’ve made the very expensive mistake in the past of paying for a storage unit full of stuff i should have gotten rid of. 🤦🏻♀️
In 2021 I had two estate sales for my sister's estate (her home, store, storage unit, and flea market booth) in another state. I brought home two large truckloads of things and donated the rest. Last year, my other sister passed and I inherited everything. I have things from my parents, and aunts and uncles. My sister's were pack rats. My problem is the emotional attachment to things. I'm watching your related videos, but I'm still stuck. Also, I now own two homes. Luckily, they are only a few miles apart.
Oh my goodness, you have a lot going on. If you were to create photo albums of all these sentimental items, you would have everything in one place that you could go to when you want. You could work on it a little bit at a time so it doesn’t feel overwhelming. Perhaps even write a little story about what the item means to you. It isn’t really the item that is making you emotional. It is the feelings and memories associated with it. So ask yourself how can you keep the memories without having to physically keep the item.
Sometimes people feel guilty letting go of their relatives' items, as though it would be disrespectful. It's not. Don't be weighed down by keeping things out of obligation.
I've been told in the past I'm a hoarder but I think its more to do with the emotional attachment like you say. But funnily enough nowadays, I am a declutterer but more to do with the fact I don't have a lot of storage at home. Heard a good decluttering tip a while ago.....'If you've not used it in 2 years, you're probably never going to use it and can live without it, so get rid'. 😊
Thank you for taking time to watch the video and comment. That is a great tip getting rid of everything you haven’t used in over two years although it can still be very difficult if there is sentimental value around the item.
I'm struggling what to do with family heirlooms that nobody wants. I can't find anyone who wants to buy them and no one in the family wants them. I could part with it if it would go to someone that wanted it, but I just can't bring myself to just throw it in the trash.
Thank you for sharing. I had a few things in the end that I offer for pennies in Facebook marketplace letting people know I just wanted the item to go to someone who would love and appreciate it as much as me. Or, I donated to charity for the tax write off
Right now I have an entire shed full of homeschool materials. I just finished 29 years of homeschooling and graduated my last one. I would like to have a sale where I offer everything for "take what you need and pay what you can" but that's not possible now bc I'm housebound in a wheelchair. My family are great at taking care of me, but they have their own lives that are quite busy, so they are not available for this huge project. I guess all those wonderful materials will just sit till eternity comes.
Bless your heart for 29 years of homeschooling. 🙏🏼 It sounds like a lot of work to get rid of everything individually, but what about offering all the supplies together for one lump sum? I know teachers nowadays are struggling because of rising costs yet still trying to provide their students with supplies. It might be a win-win for you both.❤
@@sherrykelly Try to find someone who homeschools their children and would be happy for the materials. The other option would be a church Sunday school. Just put the word out and ask everyone you know to tell everyone they know.

Your last sentence could not be more true! Things simply do not matter to me anymore. It’s all about the people in my life, and the experiences.

@@DebbieMorton111 I would gladly give all to anyone who wanted it. I just don't know anyone. I am homebound. Great idea though.
