    I love that you're using waste oils! I don't know if this will help, but when I filter my bacon grease to use for soap making, I make sure to do it when it's still really hot and it moves through the filter faster. Maybe a bit dangerous to reheat the canola oil though. My husband said the color of the soap is like coffee with cream, maybe you could sent it that way. Thanks John, love your channel. You do great work!

    Very nice, her in Egypt we used to do this soap for cleaning the dishes. but we do extra step which is washing the soap paste after cooking it (HP soap) using water to remove the residual wastes, we use stearic acid also because because the soap turns to jello if it was in wet areas. Excuse my lang. Thanks a lot.

    You can buy a filter specifically for filtering oils from a restaurant supply store. If you plan on doing this more than once it’s definitely worth checking out. I worked at a takeaway and we would use these every morning. It’s like a funnel shaped coffee filter but with several layers. Oil runs through it really quick and comes out crystal clear. Our oil never looked dark like that stuff you are using though. I’d hate to taste food cooked with that oil before it was changed 🤢 that being said, stuff cooked in the brand new oil didn’t have much flavour. There’s kind of a sweet spot where the oil has been infused with the flavour of the food but still tastes clean. We used to time it so the oil was ‘ripe’ during our busiest days so the most customers could enjoy it.

    • @nicolemitchell446
      @nicolemitchell446 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ps that’s also why when you fry stuff at home it doesn’t taste the same as food from a take away. I guess if you reused it enough it would but it would take a lot of uses.

  • @77gmcnut
    @77gmcnut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I made a filter by drilling about two dozen 1/4" holes in the bottom of a plastic bucket. Then I packed the bottom of the bucket with rolls of toilet paper. Ttake the cardboard tubes out of the rolls so you can compress them. I packed the rolls standing upright in the bottom of the bucket and then jammed extra TP into any voids between rolls. I place the filter bucket inside another bucket and pour in my waste vegetable oil. It filters out even the tiniest particles.

    I bought paint from a Habitat for Humanity place. Unbeknownst to me, the paint was old and it had little lumps even after mixing. To make a long story longer, Home Depot sell a 5 gallon bucket size sock to specifically strain paint. It is elastic and fits around the top, but I secured it with binder clips. Maybe it would be a better than the garden paper to strain oil? It was around $5 for 3 socks. I found it in the paint section.

    Would you use this on your face or rather mix coconut oil in it to create a gardeners soap!

    • @unclejonssoap
      @unclejonssoap  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I wouldn't worry about DOS unless you don't filter it out enough. It should be good for any type of soap really. But if you're really worried about it going bad, then you could try to get as close as possible to zero super fat and just use it for a general cleaning / laundry soap. As for fragrance, any fragrance or essential oil can be used... But there is no smell...lol

    Works REALLY WELL if you can team up with a restaurant that needs to get rid of their oil instead of paying someone to take it away and dispose of it, and the way landfills , and communities are REALLY clamping down on various types of waste, its getting difficult for restaurants to dispose of their wastes.

    • @unclejonssoap

    • @unclejonssoap

      If you're using bacon fat and used cooking oil, I would use lard and whatever your main frying oil is in the lye calculator. Just make sure your used oil and bacon fat are very clean before trying to make soap with them. Otherwise your soap might get funky rather quickly. Filtering is the least I would do. Might not be a bad idea to wash each oil as well to get the nasty stuff to settle out. That's a whole other topic...lol. But it can be done.

      You can use essential oils for sure. Just check with the manufacturer to see what the safe usage rate is for each one. As for the peanut oil, you sure can! The only thing I would do is to make sure other people know it's peanut oil in case of allergies. If you're not selling then no big deal. If you do sell, then I would make sure people know about the peanut oil and that there are probably other fats in there too (like from the turkey). That's what I do on my labels with recycled oil.

    • @unclejonssoap

      For us, we have a cool, dark place in our basement where we can store some containers full for months at a time. The key is to keep it air tight and cool. It won't last forever but this helps. I would say to only store a few gallons at a time if it won't get used within a few months.

    One of these days I've got to attempt this for both biodiesel (apparently glycerine is a byproduct that some soapers use as well) and soap! Cleaning up the oil is what has slowed me down from trying this sometimes Free99 ingredient. Is there a good way to 'wash' the oil to get rid of the food scent it seems to hold on to? 🐰 Jen

    • @unclejonssoap
      @unclejonssoap  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used to run a biodiesel lab. We would mix incoming oil in a tank to keep an consistent blend. Constantly pumping through a filter to cycle everything. Then we would pump it up into a heating tank and have it go through centrifuge to get out even more food matter. Afterwards it was pumped into one of two processing tanks. We would make biodiesel and then have the tank sit for a day to settle out the glycerin. We would pump out the layer of glycerin and it would still have a lard and sometimes fryer smell.

    I love the idea and I want it to work, but my soap smells funny even over top of essential oils and it turns to mush quickly in the shower. I even did hot process with 0% superfat then added some coconut oil after cooking to try to achieve saponification of all recycled oil and then create a clean superfat. But the finished product is not ideal, i.e. soft and smelly. Any recommendations?

    • @unclejonssoap
      @unclejonssoap  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really depends on what was cooked in the oil, if they burnt the oil or used it too long, and how clean was the oil before you used it. If it stinks when you started it might not be any good to use for soap.
