    I’ve always separated this song into three stages..1st is the “need” to get their fix..middle solo is the high itself..and the third is the comedown and regret.

    The melodic break is a big part of the meaning of the song. It's representing high felt when you first take your drug of choice. Then it moves into the stages of coming down and needing more. Metallica always tells a big part of their stories through their instruments, not just their lyrics.

    • @jaybird455
      @jaybird455 3 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Quite the opposite my friend. The song is broken into 3 parts instrumentally. The melodic part is the actual high. The euphoric feeling you get when using the drug. The beginning starts heavy and insane, simulating the desire and need for the drug. The end simulates once the drug has worn off and the insanity begins again. It’s quite brilliant how this was constructed.

    It is important to realize that Metal songs, and Metal as a whole is a Journey, so when you hear solos they imply time moving forward, and a split in the story that is being told. Not always to be sure, sometimes they are done simply as a way to give other members of a given band a time to shine, or to give the singer a break. This is why some of the best Rock and Metal songs tend to be longer than other kinds of songs.
    Studio versions though tend to be the best versions, hearing a band live is important to understanding a band, and Metallica is one of the best live bands there ever was, but their studio versions are the most pure when it comes to the music itself.

    I really enjoy to see you feel the passion in the songs - no matter if it`s metal, Rap...whatever. I already wrote this under another reaction of yours but I will write it again, because I think you have to know about that kind of music: "Viking-, Pagan-, Folk-Metal"
    It`s melodic metal with growls and screams but they using, besides drums and guitares, a lot more kinds of instruments, like violin, bagpipe, piano, flute, harp, jaw harp...nearly everything you can image. It`s aggressiv and powerfull but also extremly beautiful.
    Eluveitie - Helvetios live Masters of Rock (2014)
    That`s a perfect example and it should be safe. (sorry for my english.. I don't speak english very often)

    Metallica's "Black Album" is the stuff of legend. Almost every song on that album is a masterpiece. I just googled and the album has sold 16 million copies. Perhaps there are other rock albums that outsold it, but in my opinion, it's the greatest rock album in history.

    IMO Any old Metallica you listen to should either be the studio cut or concert video from around the album release. James voice has naturally fallen off a bit in his later years & it does take away from the greatness that these songs are.

      While I agree, I think we should give them atleast this much leniency when they're been playing these same songs for nearly 4 decades, they need to switch things up a couple of times. They switch up drums / some of the guitar riffs too sometimes i think? but they understand what they absolutely shouldn't mess with, like the solos for example.

      @@invisalats841 he didn’t change his singing necessarily because he’s old. he had actually blew out his voice i believe after recording the black album. he underwent surgery but the doctors said he won’t be able to sing. after hearing that, he begun to have vocal lessons. to prevent any further damage to his vocals he holds back on performances. that is why there is a big distinct difference now but overall he’s still good

    The instrumental bridge is the puppet getting his fix. Then the song kind of switches to the puppets perspective and wanting more. This is an iconic song of theirs. Of course many of their songs are iconic.

    The studio version from the original album is the best version to listen to, but it is definitely a masterpiece of musical storytelling. Not only do the lyrics tell the story of addiction with painful accuracy, the music itself tells the story. Brilliant. One of many great songs from this band.
    You should definitely check out One, the original first, then the video, because it's hard to follow everything that is going on with the video if you haven't heard the song.
    Battery is also a banger, if you like hardcore aggression, you'll love battery. Four horsemen is also good. But if you are in the mood for something melodic, Sanitarium is great.

    Ok so these guys are the legit LEGENDS at change ups and breakdowns, tempo will change, riff will change over all feel will change and it come outta nowhere and always epic now in this song or this albumn rather this is an entire Master Piece, there are so many intriguing hints and easter eggs and methoticall facts in this albumn its literally a master piece, like the fact ALL songs on are like this in the sense the music plays to the emotion or feeling of the topic, it was crazy and fast and hit hard like a drug and it last a good while, the interlude where it got soft was a person coming down from the drug, the build up again, anticipation and withdrawl setting in for another hit, then screams FIX ME and BAM hits lime a train solo like a 2nd hit but bigger then send you crazy, and then before long as your life is ending and out of season the Master of puppets, id laughing at you cuz he now co trols you, hes now ruined your life and killing you and ending your life, they have a newer addiction ssong of the newset albumn called Moth i to Flames, the addiction of fame and fortune which James is not he wrote that song to keep himself humble, and he is all about the fans and making them a family, hell say weather you been a fan since the begging or a fan yesterday, your family, Also HATE this era cuz he was on the verge of loosing his voice, and had to slow down and take voice lessons cuz he was straining it so hard Dr. Said if he doesnt do something soon he will loose his voice forever and wont be able to sing
