Thank You for this video. That last part about smaller files really shouldn't have been glanced over though. It's very important to note that smart previews are not copies of your RAW files, but actually pretty compressed versions of the originals.

Is that edited photo also on the original pc and lightroom there? How much extra HD space is needed for the smart previews..% wise?

tks so much indeed. for your effort to make us easier to work with lrc. however it's un clerar what the definition 'the drive nust be a letter and do not changes' . question: the external hd where I store my images is continuosly modified by adding new photos. in othe terms it changes. can be done?

Yes. It is OK for changes on the drive. The thing that must remain the same is the name of the drive (and the folder tree structure). In Windows, that will be the letter. Macs use the Drive name. (I only use Macs for my photo stuff so I don’t know a solution to moving a Drive from one OS to another - as another poster had mentioned.)

This doesn't seem to be working anymore in May of 2024. Something has changed and Lightroom errors out when trying to open a catalog that's stored in Google Drive.

Hey. I"m helping a friend track down a missing lightroom catalog. It may have something to do with installing LR on two computers and her hitting the wrong button prompt. Apparently LR asked something about syncing catalog and she wasn't sure which option she hit but what happened was her original catalog went away AND her LR seemed to reset to a freshly installed app loosing all her installed plugins, etc. I thought maybe you'd understand this better than I and lend any insight?

    Hello !
Just got a macbook and I'm on the same situation as you are EXCEPT that I want to use the real images, not Smart Previews. I can move the SSD containing the master photos so it should solve the problem.
First I tried to use a local catalog file on the SSD, it seem to works BUT each time I am going through Mac PC it says the files are missing and i have to click on locate the folder and select the SSD. Since I use the same SSD, I don't understand. I will try with the Drive solution but I think the problem will clearly be the same since it's coming from the folder path of the images.
Do you have any idea ?

I am unsure of a solution to your issue. The problem is that Windows uses the letter Drive as the name of the drive and macOS uses the given drive name - as you had surmised. I only use Macs for LRC, but I would still be interested in hearing if anybody has a solution.

When I go to my laptop and try to open the catalog says "Lightroom cannot launch with this catalog. It is either on a network volume or on a volume on which Lightroom cannot save changes" I don't know why? I synchronized with google drive and on both computers, I have the app of Drive I tried in both mirroring screen and stream and the same result, any other ideas?

I have the same issue... I have found that if I pause google drive's sync, I can get some work done, until Lightroom crashes... This only seems to happen on my Windows11 computers and not on windows 10. For now I have had to add an a step where I copy my catalog from my google drive to a local folder, Open the local copy, and then copy the catalog back to google drive when I am done. I wish that Google drive and Lightroom would play nice.

I think on our phones we only get smart previews too

Could you be more specific when you show the catalog in your Mac. How do you share it with the cloud and, consequently with the Desktop.

I installed first Google drive on my Mac and made a link on my desktop.By clicking on that link LR will be started. Now don't forget telling LR to synch. and save after each shot down! Good luck

i love that all these TH-camrs use the same phrase "let's get into it". At least they are moving away from "without further ado" Oh wait....Nevermind. I started this comment too soon. I thought these people were supposed to be creatives
