    Whether or not REH wrote the first shared universe, he was so incredibly far ahead of his time and left us way too soon. It's incredible how long his legacy has lasted and will continue to last 💪

      @@Mr.Cheese113 there was a story I read by Stephen King about a professor who got an iPad and could connect into a another universe where famous authors lived and produced more works than here. A pink iPad I think. He was classified literature like Faulkner, Stephenson, so I always wondered what if Howard hadn't died but lived another 30 or so years. He was working on an original out space novel Almuric. What other kinds of things could he have done? Has anyone read the teel James Glenn Bob Howard adventures. In them Bob is still alive with the money from writing he meets vampire family, Hitler as a good guy and Lawrence of Arabia as a bad guy and even goes to the fairy court for a boxing match and poetry contest.

    Edgar Rice Burroughs shared universe started with the moon maid 1923 or even earlier with his first book a Princess of Mars, where Edgar Rice Burroughs would use himself in the prologue as a framing device to tell the story.
    Another example is the 1914 The Outlaw of Torn, set in 13th century England where there is a Lord Greystoke... (Tarzan's name is John Clayton, Lord Greystoke)

    Howard's shared universe is now technically part of the Marvel expanded universe. Marvel has been publishing comics featuring Solomon Kane, Kull, and Conan for over 50 years. Red Sonja was a Marvel creation, and there was an issue of What If? that teamed Conan with Thor by way of a rip in time created by Odin.✌️

      @conanthebarbarianofficial  14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Could Greek mythology be considered a shared universe? Absolutely-but remember, we're talking about a modern shared universe, where fictional stories are created for entertainment, not religious belief. In the 1930s, hardly anyone was worshipping Conan, Tarzan, or Gandalf! Only the COOL ones. 😎

    • @AngelusNielson
      @AngelusNielson 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@conanthebarbarianofficial Fair point. Taking that into account, I'd say the Cuthulu mythos predates Conan as a shared universe as they are both part of the same universe and Lovecraft was first. (Hyborea is the pre-historic version of the more modern Cuthulu mythology, they share a few elder gods. And Lovecraft and Howard were penpals.)

    • @conanthebarbarianofficial
      @conanthebarbarianofficial  12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@AngelusNielson Yes! The Lovecraft circle - they are mentioned. I encourage you to revisit the conclusion of our video. Jules Verne and the often-unmentioned Alexandre Dumas were among the earliest modern authors in the 1800s to connect characters across stories. We also touch on Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith, but the central point is that Robert E. Howard set a new standard for shared universes. He crafted an entire history spanning nearly a millennium, with deeper connections between stories and characters than had ever been seen before. One could argue that Tolkien expanded on this idea by developing languages and a more detailed secondary world, but Howard beat him to it!

    Hate to quibble, but I don't think the Atlanteans of Moon of Skulls is any way related to Kulls Atlantis. They were brown skinned and totally unlike the proto-Gael Kull and his kin. Also the Picts weren't related to the Gaels/Irish. The Cimmerians were their ancestors,not the Picts. There is some shared universe in REH, but I think you took it a little too far. Still did a fine job.

    • @conanthebarbarianofficial
      @conanthebarbarianofficial  11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +1

      I hear you, but considering that Kull’s Atlanteans existed tens of thousands of years earlier, and the ones Solomon Kane encounters are an offshoot from much later, it stands to reason they would have appeared quite different by Kane’s time. Keep in mind, Atlantis was uncivilized and consisted of many tribes, potentially with varying appearances and agendas. Also, we’re fully aware that the Cimmerians are ancestors of the Irish. We never stated that the Picts were related to either the Cimmerians or the Irish in the video. If this confusion stems from the music choice, we selected Scottish music because Bran's adventures take place around what is now the Scottish Highlands. Thanks, for the kind words!

      @@brenthatcher5748"Gordon describes himself as being of Highland Scotch and Black Irish ancestry, ethnic groups generally considered to be descendants of the Picts." The Picts interbred and eventually faded from history. The Picts of that time inhabited a vast region, stretching from the Scottish Highlands to the British Isles and parts of Ireland. Hope this clears the confusion!

    • @AnAgeUndreamedOf
      @AnAgeUndreamedOf 8 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      The Atlantean in the "Moon of Skulls" says that they worshiped "Valka and Hotah", gods that Kull regularly swore by. The "brown" Atlanteans appear in two other stories, "Skull-Face" and the "Gods of Bal-Sagoth." The latter is a Turlogh O'Brien story. Turlogh also appeared in "The Dark Man" which references Bran Mak Morn. So there is no question the "brown" Atlanteans are part of the Howardverse. But you're absolutely right and that they seem very different then the prehistoric Atlanteans of Kull's time. They are more technologically advanced and have established a maritime empire with colonies on the mainland. But given the time of Kull was 80 or 90,000 years before the hyborian age, that's plenty of time for the Atlanteans two have become more advanced before the great cataclysm. And even in Kull's time, the seven kingdoms were in decline and the barbarians were on the rise. I talked about this some in my chapter in Conan Meets the Academy. I suspect that Howard was getting some of the idea of different atlantean races from the theosophist William Scott Elliott. Howard's "brown" Atlanteans have a lot of similarity with Elliott's Toltec atlanteans.
