- James Kalm is a bad boy who loves to look at great painting and share his experiences with other painting fans. So, when he dropped in at this double exhibition of two of the twentieth century's greatest paint slingers, and was told there was a "no photo policy" he was frustrated. After a short walk, and visits to see shows by Gorky and Baselitz, he returned to the gallery with the trusty spy-cam. This walk through is so fresh, he decided to forgo any voiceover commentary and post it for you viewers ASAP.
My most two favorites, would love to have seen them in person, thanks for sharing this video.
The genius of Soutine and the prestige of Bacon - what a double bill! How inspiring and exciting to see them in person.
Wonderful paintings. ♥️.
this is great, especially fullscreen! thank you so much! while i did miss your thinking-out-loud, i was able to hear my own reaction to what you presented so nicely
I read the comments on your postings all of the time. I agree with all that has been said here. Great pairing, great Soutines (so many in one place!). Thanks for the "guts", you get the "glory".
Wow! I love Soutine and Bacon too,of course!!!
This show blows pure abstract painting into the weeds, intriguing pairing, a few Bacons shown here I never knew existed.Bacons early work is stronger I feel, apart from his small portraits, his bigger work seemed to have too much empty space so the viewer could concentrate on the 'fact' of it all. Soutine comes over as more vital and spontaneous,Bacon,in his later work more academic, great though Bacon was. Thanks James.
Thanks for this interesting comment. I'll have to think about what you said...
As much as I mght have enjoyed your comments James - in this era of crowdsurfing and Instagram it is great to see the gentle art of visiting a gallery to contemplate the artists work in relative silence 👍👀🙏
Awesome exhibition
thank you so much for sharing this great work.
TY so much mr James! Some of my favourite Bacon stuff upstairs.
Thank you. You can see the paintings that work and don't. His earlier pieces are messy. Then the magic kicks in with the more recent work. I never knew many of his paintings were quiet small. I always thought he did great big canvases
Love Chaim Soutine , absolutely the best
Nice work as ever James. Cheers from Scotland!
These shows of world-class artists are FREE TO ENTER in New York? I am in envy, mister Kalm!
Thanks for braving a possible gallery attendant beat down to bring us these images.
The use of the glass by Bacon was as much a device to keep the viewer at a distance as it was one to include him, to draw him into the painting (reflection...)
@machiningpaper One of the devices Bacon used to "distance" the viewer was his frames and the glass, so blame Bacon, he planed the whole thing.
Thank you!
@utubeindexed While I'm a firm believer in not trying to re-do the past, these artists should be seen as great inspirations to anyone pushing a brush. I think the pairing of these works is an historic opportunity to learn and analyse by way of comparison.
Wow! Thanks James. A museum show; missed your comments though...
me ha gustado ese retrato de Van Gogh, pintado por Bacon.tambien otros, claro.
Thankyou JamesKalm for the chance to see. So even if the camera is low that's a poorly lit gallery. If we can see your head you could see your head in shadow. Which fiend put those Bacon's behind glass? Could be I'm missing something but why do you put oil on canvas behind something that reflects the light from the spots in the low ceiling gallery. I'm feeling reverence for the almighty Bacon and sadness for the folk with the gallery with the low ceilings.
@dermic Despite the image they try to project, the art world, especially the commercial end of it, does not take to innovation kindly (unless there's easy money to be made). Many galleries are still functioning on a nineteenth century idea of exclusivity. Regarding commentary: after visiting Cory Arcangel's retro at the Whitney, several other shows, pedaling twenty miles and having work to do in the studio, I couldn't afford the extra hour or two for the voice over , sorry.
No commentary?
Its a shame to see these work in narrow screen with no details and no commentary
I think times have changed. banning photography and you from doing your work properly is like banning any art critique from seeing the show. wouldnt they make exceptions if your secretary called before and says you are to visit ?
makes me wanna buy you a special high quality spy kalm you can place in eye level
