Hey Neil . I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you . I cannot begin to tell you how valuable all the information that you have been relating has been to me . I have been very fortunate to find your videos on TH-cam and have been studying them and sharing the information with my students . It helps that you and I are built the same so everything that you do works perfectly into my game .
Learned this shoulder pin a few years ago and it made my guard dramatically more dangerous. Started with a sit up sweep and now i got yet another option... appreciate it...
Quick tip that helped me, getting the ovehook then posting with the other hand on the collar bone or shoulder really helps with creating the space you need for your hips and legs. Especially if you get a reverse kimura grip like Neil does here
Any chance of putting Mastering the Triangle Choke back into print? Copies are listed for over $300 on Amazon. Maybe it's time to re-release it as an e-book.
lol thats funny i got a pristine copy just chillin right here its so fuckin dope i barely read it tho no ill never sell it to you hahaha such a sick book tho lmao
Can you please explain the squeeze? I got in that position in my class and had a good triangle shape around my partner's neck, but I could not squeeze tight enough to make a choke. I tried pushing and pulling in every direction, but I just could not make it work.
I have a question, at the 3:40 part of the video where you are sitting on his legs and your right arm is basing and your left hand is grabbing his left wrist, what is stopping him from just yanking his left arm out of your grip? Is that typically a strong position for a grip or is the whole sequence of moves so fast that he doesn't have time to respond? Or is there a follow counter move if he break his wrist out of that grip? It seems like when he forces you back to the mat that you let go of that grip as part of the next move, what would you suggest if he doesn't force you back to the mat and breaks the grip without going to the mat.. Sorry for the thousand questions, I was just curious just in case it happens to me....thanks for the awesome videos...OSS!!
I am getting good at getting the Neil knot, but can only finish with triangles. I just can't seem to finish the initial choke. My arm is not long enough to grab my forearm of the arm grabbing the leg. Are their details that can help me close up the initial choke? This position is awesome as a pitstop and great way to set up triangle easily. Thanks for the awesome teachings.
This is awesome. If Ricky Lindell and you say it's a good grip it must be. Ricky is a beast. I use your K control guard all the time and it works really well. I've had a few people posture up really tall and push the foot that's on their hip down off their hip (the foot of the knee shield leg) if that makes sense. I was curious if you had a solution to that?
I've tried K Control a few times. I liked the idea of the position but couldn't make it work. Do you push with the shin and try to pull-out the leg, or more hang-back and work the head-control?
I’ve been trying to work this but that bottom leg just gets pinned an they pass an then the shoulder pin doesn’t feel strong. Could you go over that in a video?
Thanks for the video but I tried the technique and I didn't have the strength to put the shoulder crank hold on heavier rolling opponents they just stack me 🤔anybody else feeling me?
IN 10th Planet this position was called "London." However, the opponent can stack & pass if enough pressure is applied to the bottom person's thigh. You might as well transition to chilldog to stop the cartwheel escape to side control
It's the finish. Same guard can be found under "Lister Grip". Guard is the same but I think he's referring to the finish as a knot. That's why he's calling the guard shoulder pin guard and not Neil guard I think.
I have only seen girls pick lent off a boy as a way of flirting....that was weird af...right after that he was literally staring at the dudes crouch...
Geez, this lock is awesome , getting to it is controversial though ...because your opponent can move to and more than likely will , while you are setting it up, but once again wow! brilliant lock, whew ! Your partner looks at you a little too much lol even picks lint off ...
When you crank down on his shoulder, he'll have no leverage to reach over and tag you. He'll just be using it for base to hold his face from eating the asphalt.
Is called "Williams Guard " Dude ! Shoulder Pin Guard ? The shoulder is trapped but Not Pinned ,the word pinning is used when you pin the shoulder or Shoulders to the ground .PS : there is no GUARD in Catch wrestling .
Neil Melanson techniques got me out of too many troubles during rolls, unexpected details and submissions.
You can hit this from bottom half when you are swimming for the under hook. Your opponent will pummel and then you can lock this in. Love it.

That half-guard entry is slick.
This is so good! And nice to see it getting a bit of attention with the recent comp highlight
2:41 start
6:12 going other side
7:28 from z guard w Robson hook

That's a sneaky and fantastic move.
What an unusual strategy, I've never seen anyone do this. I'm going to try this today.
Wish I could like this video more than once. Great instructional. Thank you so much!
Awesome positional pin/submission!
Slick and very practical since breaking down a stronger opponent can be difficult. Can you elaborate on the half guard application please?
Neil is f****ing awesome teacher!!! He make those techniques looks too easy....Danmmmmm!!!!!!!!
Niels stuff is highly underrated because its not flashy and because it works. For a big old duffer like me, neils stuff is the best.
ABSOLUTE KILLER MOVE. THANKS
Great video!
Looks like a Williams guard type thing. Same angles. With a rubber guard lockdown..
Good stuff!!!
A very nasty submisson from Williams guard for sure
I love the details the Neil Knot is great thanks for sharing always the realistic way this is hi level knowledge for sure🤙🏼
Thank you for such clear instructions and finer details. You make this look effortless. I can't wait to practice this!!!!

This guys is good.

Awesome stuff!
This guy is awesome
crazy stuff i give something a go
very nice!
Thank You for translation!
William's guard ?
Yes but no. Williams guard is the shoulder pin but the Neil know is the finish or choke in this video
Shoulder crunch with the leg reinforcement is williams guard. The choke is the Neil knot.
6:22 I go TWO!!
Nice stuff here's a sub and like 😀👍

3 years too late? 😂 increase flexibility and create a deeper angle if possible.
It works soooooooo gooooood!!!
Neil, be careful mate, people stealing techniques from your videos and naming them after themselves. Hahaha.
This is awesome. If Ricky Lindell and you say it's a good grip it must be. Ricky is a beast.

Love it
whoa, 6:54, what kind of triangle was that?
Thanks for the video but I tried the technique and I didn't have the strength to put the shoulder crank hold on heavier rolling opponents they just stack me 🤔anybody else feeling me?
surprising to not have seen this finish in the ufc?
Most effective guard system.
Less energy, most gains.
wow

I don't know what you talking about but This is pure catch wrestling
I was a second level shooter under billy robinson before he pass away and i 100% confirm that 90 % of bjj 10th pjj is pure Catch wrestling.
Simply we're the origin and the others are freaks
I Lack the landmarks to which you refer, and yet still relate to what you are saying
Me likey. Thanks Neil!
Oh I am so trying this next time we free train in class.

🔥 I have found
Hi,
Extra 💪👍👍👍
I have watched this video at least 30 times over the last couple of years. I just noticed. Where did your toe go?
this dude on the right got other things in mind lol
I wonder how at all this is different than Shawn Williams guard.
It's the finish. Same guard can be found under "Lister Grip". Guard is the same but I think he's referring to the finish as a knot. That's why he's calling the guard shoulder pin guard and not Neil guard I think.
Shoulder Pin Guard, Leg-Hook Guard, 'Russian' Guard, London Guard, Lister Grip Guard, Shawn Williams Guard; all the same position.
Not sure who came up with it, but I learned Neil's version first so the Shawn Williams guard to me is just Neil's 0 degree shoulder pin.
👍
I'm back, wow again

looks like hes checking out his slave master....
I have only seen girls pick lent off a boy as a way of flirting....that was weird af...right after that he was literally staring at the dudes crouch...
i think his OCD was kicking up
It's just some love. Happens now and again in jiu-jitsu
This is fucking gold :)

Is this video new, or was it like Sherdog Tech of the Week or something?
ollhashedfetish. it was his newest video just recently on his shoulder pin setups yes..
Williams Guard

That's called the Williams guard
This looks like it could been a great move to do in a street fight, problem is what the guy on top gonna be doing with his free hand?
When you crank down on his shoulder, he'll have no leverage to reach over and tag you. He'll just be using it for base to hold his face from eating the asphalt.
Picking your butt

My coach showed me the omaplata while doing this
Is called "Williams Guard " Dude ! Shoulder Pin Guard ? The shoulder is trapped but Not Pinned ,the word pinning is used when you pin the shoulder or Shoulders to the ground .PS : there is no GUARD in Catch wrestling .
They just talk for half of the video. Just skip
this dude is missing a toe?
wow! added.
