DIY Dropper Seat Post Tutorial

  • I found a way to make an inexpensive and satisfactory DIY dropper seat post until the budget allows the real deal and in this short tutorial you’ll find out how to make a diy dropper post of your own.
    First you’ll need to source the parts, I purchased mine at Ace Hardware on the way to the trail but most hardware stores such as lower, home depot, or true value will have these readily available.
    You’ll need 2 compression springs. Mine were 5/8 inch at 5 inches but every bike will be different so I suggest measure your seat tube length and diameter to be sure of precise fitting.
    optional are the rubber spacers I placed in either ends of the bottom spring to avoid metal on metal contact.
    Lastly, you’ll need a 1inch washer, or washer to fit the diameter of your seat tube.
    If you are worried about the springs interacting with the bottom bracket you can see here that the seat tube does not dissect the bottom bracket shell. On my bike. I haven’t encountered any problems but Doing this hack to your bike is at your own risk so I suggest investigating the area where your seat tube meets bottom bracket shell to be on the safe side.
    Onto the procedure.
    Place both the springs in the seat tube. you’ll need to remove bottle cage bolts in the vertical position to allow springs to reach the bottom of the tube.
    Oh and if you have some grease hanging around. You can get messy if you want. Just avoid ruining your gold watch.
    Add the washer to the top of the springs. This allows the Seat Post a surface to work against.
    That’s it. Insert the Seat Post and you are ready to drop it low. And High
    Get out and create Your Own Adventure!
    See you tomorrow!
    Please thump that thumber.

    If budget is an issue, I suggest checking out the KS ExoForm Speed Up adjustable seatpost. They can be had for less than $60 USD. It's essentially a manual dropper post with the lever attached to the post under the seat. You pull the lever and manually raise or lower the seat.

      I am starting to see those! They look pretty intriguing. I wouldn't say budget is an issue. I just like the simplicity of it.

      Thanks! It's not my original idea but I thought that it should be shared more widely as a lot of us cannot drop 200 on a dropper. I have been using this for about 2 months and it works great. Not as convenient as a proper dropper, but better than lifting and lowering constantly.

    I thought about doing something just like this. It looks even simpler than I thought. I saw someone else comment about the spin. I thought about making some kind of groove in my design on paper but havnt started experimenting yet. It will be so cool to avoid the hundred dollar dropper post with an effective diy version like this. Great work! Now, if the post and tube were square... you wouldnt need the groove im thinking about. Anyway. Im sure you got your own ideas.

    • @YourOwnAdventure
      @YourOwnAdventure  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching and sharing some ideas! I'm definitely trying to think of a way to avoid spinning and actuating the quick release remotely. I am going to upload a video with improvements in the near future. I'm just not satisfied with having another hydraulic piston to worry about so mechanical advantage is always going to be my choice. I saw a cool new option on amazon that is entirely mechanical and really simple. Seems foolproof.

      the point of the hundred dollar version is, that it allows you to do it on the go., without slowing down, in downhills as well as technical sections including uphill, features... not mentioning using partial adjustments of the travel when needed. so unless this is at least remotely controlled and reliable it is not much of a help considering the need of fitting a correctly sized and strong spring. rotations. jump-outs, height inconsistency, impact of dust, temperatures. regular quick release allows you to drop the seat as well while sitting on it. probably if you do not mind to stop on a trail to bring up the sprung version, u as well would not mind to pull up the regular quick release, dont you.

      2 year old comment, but, all it would take is an angle grinder making a straight line down the tube of the seatpost, and making a small tab to fit the line. Once the clamp is clamped, that tab is under 0 stress, so it would be fine

    • @scottgray5155
      @scottgray5155 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@metalface8515Thanks for sharing. At first, I thought u meant my comment was like that of a 2 yr haha. Yes, your idea should work and its got the simplicity for a diy. I would like to see it done. I don't have much of a bike workshop set up yet. No metal working stuff.

      Nice buy! They are really good cross country bikes. I don't think it'll disappoint you. Added from this design, I would add some sort of spacer in the seat tube that can add some compression to the spring. Over time it looses some of it's spunk!

    I like going alone when I have my shit together. Sometimes I even smoke some herb before a ride, usually if it's at a certain flowy trail that isn't pedally. It's nice having some cash to get food after. I like riding certain trails with my CamelBak with tools in it and some trails I don't bother, and sometimes I even break out my full face helmet and goggles. I ride a 29 steel hardtail but I might use this super expensive sram x0 hub I bought off Craigslist to make 27.5x2.8" wheels and tires. I need a new fork though, and I want to either get a new handlebar or figure out a way to make it wider since it's only 700mm. It matches the stem and I think that makes it worth it to figure out a way widen it. Either way, I'm looking forward to getting my bike dialed for next year
