Scott literally shows us, not just in this video, but every single one that he takes over the bass, with his hand movements! Like he's saying, "Not only am i gonna let you hear how truly talented i am, I'm gonna let my hands show yuns just what notes i'm hitting" lol He amazes me every single performance!!!
@@cissypentaholicpage864 Yes! Like in Sound of Silence and Come Along. It sounds weird but I’m kind of obsessed with watching his hands when he does bass. 🥴🤣🤦🏽♀️
Ohh i don't know if you've seen it already, but you should check out their cover/version of "You're a mean one, Mr.Grinch", Matt takes the lead vocal in that one and Scott takes over the bass, i think that's what hapenned in this one as well!!!
As mentioned by everyone else, Scott takes bass when Matt (or Avi back then) takes the solo. He sung bass in high school choir. All of these songs have this (not exhaustive): Hallelujah It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year You're A Mean One, Mr Grinch Standing By Here Comes Santa Claus Love Me When I Don't A Little Space (but could be layered as well) Mad World Midnight In Tokyo You're Out Sound Of Silence Stay I Need Your Love Can You Feel The Love Tonight This song is still definitely layered, like during the rap. But when Matt sings the solo, Scott is definitely on bass
People are pretending the same Pentatonix rules still apply when they have thrown them all out for their newer songs. It's no longer "Pentatonix doesn't produce anything they can't do live." There are three or four layers of Mitch singing with himself in Anchor and the new songs have multiple instruments... that aren't played by them... and even credits for completely different people singing in the background on Easy Love. PTX has admitted they have no idea how they are going to do the new songs live but it's going to take new arrangements. So it's true that Scott is pantomiming doing the bass during Matt's solo... but he doesn't make it look like he is during Matt's rap, which is really confusing. You just can't automatically say "it's always Scott" anymore.
PTX r pretty transparent about the Production, I think it's when people and reactors don't get that they use Pop Music Production, Layering, Reverb or Instruments in the new Songs. It's not even hidden, yes they can do the Songs Live, but it's always a stripped down Version. Also, it's kinda weird to say, it's not because when u put their Songs on Logic or other Music Programs, u can see the layers, reverb, post-production. The New Songs, have a bunch of other people credited for the background singing, playing instruments etc. Their Studio Versions always had a big production, even the Old stuff, they credit the shit lol. 100% Agree with u.
perfectkismet, you articulated very well what I've been thinking. It doesn't bother me that they are changing their rules, but we Pentaholics just need to adapt what we say to new reactors about our beloved group. Also, I think the bass in this was Matt throughout...IMO it doesn't sound like Scott's bass, which to me sounds a bit different (though admittedly I can more easily tell the difference between Avi and Scott's bass than Matt and Scott's).
I am surprised that you did not know that Scott always covers bass when the bass (Avi or Matt) sings. After all these months, I am surprised. You can watch him take over the bass in several of the videos, including this one. Watch their "Hallelujah" live performance on their Christmas Special to see it clearly. You get things so wrong sometimes. Also, they layer themselves when singing live.

I do think they layer much more for videos today than years ago, but even so they had moments where for example Avi sang (one example would be Halleluja) and Scott took over the base which pretty much sounded like Avi (which is extremely impressive even if most people didn't realize it). And sticking with the Halleluja-Example, they also did this song live and it sounded the same which was proof, that Scott can take over for the bassist if he has a solo at that point. In some new songs there are however definitely moments that wouldn't work live without cutting out some parts of the arrangement because of layering
Jacob I know you watch more of the other acapella groups than I do, but do any of the others come close to the showmanship, creative arrangements and delivery of PTX? I know the others do not do AGT (Pentatonix was just featured in the finale doing The Prayer) or the TV show Family Feud. It seems PTX is really in a league of their own. Have you reacted to Midnight in Tokyo yet?
This isn't to be mean about the other acapella groups but if you compare sales you will see why Pentatonix is in their own class. They have several platinum albums and three Grammys. Homefree the group that won season 4 after Pentatonix has 87,000 albums sold of their biggest seller. Last time I looked Homefree was the second most popular acapella group in terms of sales. This is a huge difference and is reflected in the kind of things they are asked to do.
Hi Jacob. Nice reaction. just an fyi basso profundo: "Italian composers considered basso profondo basses with "large" voices with a range of E2 to E4, lower than typical basses. ... strong basses." " strong basses with a good low register. a bass singer with an exceptionally low range." Avi majored in Opera and Classical. I believe Ben Bram talked about the differences in Avi's sound/range and Matt's and that the band had to change things up a bit to fit Matt's chill sound in your interview with him. Super interview!!!
When it comes to their original songs, they have all kinds of layering, added instruments, etc. Cause they can do that, just like any other musical group or band. However, when they do covers of songs they don't really do that. They plan them out to be easily reproduced live. Scott covering bass for Matt and body percussion, claps, snaps, etc could easily cover percussion during Kevin's rap.
Damn dude, you forgot about the white chocolate droppa already? When Matt does lead, Scott takes over bass. He and Scott have nearly identical ranges (Scott can get slightly higher, Matt can get slightly lower)
I'm not sure for the official recording if they layer recording of Matt doing bass the whole time with the part while he's singing, but of course if they do it live then Scott would be taking over bass for that part. (I never read the info on that recording detail stuff, since it bores me. I just listen to the songs.😄) I do know that sometimes the recordings do have 1 or more of them layered in parts to give a fuller sound experience, but in general they try not to do a lot of that because the point is that their a capella arrangements can be performed live by them without sounding like it's missing something. Also they don't go crazy using things like autotune & reverb, but they aren't afraid to use it at all (like some a capella purists would) because for some parts in some songs it fits the style & is a great effect.
As much as I do agree with Scott taking over bass... USUALLY... I'm still not 100% certain with this cover on that. Since it's a cover that they likely wouldn't do during a concert tour... I'm pretty sure they were looping tracks. The percussion while Kevin was rapping was more than anyone else usually maintains. And that bass line during Matt's solo still sounded like him with 3 part harmony from the trio in the background.
On the recording that's definitely Matt base-backing himself. Live, it may sometimes be Scott subbing in. Other times I'm sure they've occasionally used the backing track too, but in theory Scott is capable of it :( but I'm supposing its not always practical).
Was that a senior moment you were having? With all the PTX videos that you cover and break down please don't tell me that you have never realized that Scott picks up the bass line when Avi/Matt have a solo. Pay attention to right after Matt says the word "LeBron", the camera pans over and literally shows Scott singing the bass part.

@@JacobRestituto Well, shoot. After watching this reaction again, then the original video, for far too long, it is a recording trick. Scott is singing words and other effects. PTX changed it up. Started with Keven using the kick pad.😯😶🙄😎
Fun fact: When Matt takes the lead in a song, Scott will take over the bass for him. You can see Scott doing the bass in this video.
