  • "Welcome to the Machine" is the second song on Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here. It is notable for its use of heavily processed synthesizers and guitars, as well as a wide and varied range of tape effects.

    Lyrics:
    Welcome my son
    Welcome to the machine
    Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been
    You've been in the pipeline
    Filling in time
Provided with toys and scouting for boys
You brought a guitar to punish your ma
    And you didn't like school
And you know you're nobody's fool
    So welcome to the machine
    Welcome my son
    Welcome to the machine
    What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream
You dreamed of a big star
    He played a mean guitar
He always ate in the Steak Bar
He loved to drive in his Jaguar
    So welcome to the machine

Beauty is nothing but message of life which terror is the reaction of death. We are barely able endure the position we put ourselves in with society where we waste beauty to suffer the fear of wasting our hours in the "american dream" being every second closer to death. It amaze us because life has become a constant loop of terror and beauty where we learn from it or suffer in place. In the end what destroys us is the question of what is after life? What the meaning of it? There could be nothing after this not to mention we dont know what nothing looks like. We couldn't comprehend what not existing is.

Yes pure art with no frills. That too in the 70s. There is a video of Roger Waters Wall concert at O2 Arena where Gilmour plays comfortably numb (very recent). Nick Mason was very much involved with the Holofonic sound which he kept on tweaking. Even today you get a worst quality MP3 of their music you would think it is all magnificent. Long live Floyd. Sad that Barett and wright are no more. I still wish the remaining guys got together for one last swansong of an album. Much ahead of their time.

Just finished it for the first time, the whole series, last night from this comment.
      Incredible.
And my heart broke, when the song kicked in and the machine was "Father..,I am sorry, I failed you"
I couldn't believe I was emotional for the machine, and yet it had no face, no voice, and it broke me.

The Continental on Prime Video had this song in it's second episode, that's why I'm here.
    Its sound but especially the lyrics resonated with me. Like this line;
'where have you been? It's alright we know where you've been...' is just lyrical prophesy for a song of that time.
    Incredible stuff.

As a young artist (actor), you know what's really going on with the society so you turn to the creative arts to change and improve it. The song describes the band's disillusionment with the music industry as a money-making machine rather than a forum of artistic expression. The plot centers on an aspiring musician getting signed by a seedy executive to the music industry (the "Machine"). The voice predicts all of his seemingly rebellious ideas ("You bought a guitar to punish your ma / You didn't like school / And you know you're nobody's fool"). His illusions of personal identity are further crushed with lines such as "What did you dream? / It's all right, we told you what to dream." Credit to Wikipedia.

"It's alright, we told you what to dream" is the most powerful line for me. The system and its hegemony are so intricate, so immensely powerful that it does not only define how you live materially, as in how you eat, dress, travel et caetera. It crushes you from inside, how you perceive the world around you, what you find beautiful, how you love, your self steem, quite literally shaping your mind. To have control over other's very consciousness is the ultimate form of domination IMO. Heartbreaking.
