      Several reasons: he had lost two previous battles, his funds were scarce and had fled the previous battle, earning the reputation of coward. If he retreated, he would soon have to disband his army, and probably wouldn't get a chance to raise another one for years. The Battle of Nancy was his last chance to obtain a meaningful victory.
