Retro Future Unit Converter

  • This is a retro, future dystopian style fidget toy... but it's actually super useful. I was tired of pulling out my phone to convert inches to millimeters or ounces to grams, so I made this.
You flip the switch, and bam, it's on. No waiting, no annoying ads.
Ever been curious about speed conversions? Like how fast 100 kilometers per hour really is in miles per hour? This gadget's got you. You select 'Length', click the dial to 'Kilometers per hour', switch to 'Miles per hour', and then just twist the dial. And here's the kicker - spin it fast, and the numbers zoom up exponentially. Spoiler: 100 KPH is just about 62 MPH. Not as speedy as it sounds, right?
I crafted the housing in Fusion 360 and 3D printed it with an SLA printer. The dial's a rotary encoder with a click function. The brains? A D1 Mini, juiced up by a battery repurposed from an old disposable vape.
Check out the video to see it in action. Trust me, it's not just another gadget - it's the fidget toy you didn't know you needed.

I think this is a brilliant little retro futurism device and I've started to build my own one. It doesn't need to work better than the internet or a phone app, that's not the point of such things. Or... You live in a country and are of an age that you've lived through both imperial and metric eras. Then you already know most of the speed limits in both MPH and KPH, 3 feet is roughly a metre, 12 inches is roughly 30cm, miles to kilometres is knowing your 16 times table - 1 mile = roughly 1600 metres or 1.6 kilometres. So 5 miles is 5x16/10.
I'm grateful to have lived with both systems, but metric is so much easier. I mean 5/16! Just call it 8mm and be done!

@@HackMakeMod Whats happens if i want to fast convert a big number? Then a keyboard is faster.
How easy to acces the know is? Taking in account that you need to grab the device with the other hand... pretty hard.
A tabletop calculator stills holds a better form farctor for your purpose, however the encoder idea, specially with the acceleration library, its a neat idea.
Also as i tell you before the menus take more time to navigate than use the main function. You should put fast access buttons.
Dont serve for his purpose, a table top calculator works better, you still need to iterate the idea some more times.
