Also inside, behind the cartridge are 2 grooves that hold a small spring and rubber gasket…if those fall out and not put back in then your shower will make a small whistle sound…I did not realize this till I found those pieces on the side of the tub…I put them back and the whistling stopped

Yes, nice and snug but no tools are required

@@JACKofallmasterofPLUMB I think the decorative nut cover is to be hand tightened, but the cartridge holding nut itself needs to be tightened with pliers, at least that's how kitchen faucets and bathroom faucets go.

@@sparky9327 100% in the case of faucets. Assuming we are talking about the same part, this retaining ring is smooth chrome. If the intent was to tighten with a tool it would have a means of applying a tool to it. Having replaced several hundred I assure you snug and hand tight will seal this. When these are over tighten they can be a nightmare to remove. The cartridge fits firmly in the rough in with an O ring. The retaining ring is only to prevent it from being pushed forward by water pressure.

Cartridge replacement advice should begin with how to identify model number of your faucet and how to find part number of the cartridge. Trying to install wrong cartridge in a wrong faucet won't work no matter how good installation instructions are.

You make a valid point. I will see what I can find and put it in the description. Thanks for pointing that out. Always room for improvement.
