    My uncle read Latin at Oxford and he graduated with honors and he became a very rich businessman. When I was young I asked how Latin prepared him for business and he said it taught him how to think and analyze in such a way that he demolished the competition. He was always quoting Cicero and the Aeneid and I never understood a world of it until years later. He said what he brought to the table was intelligence and drive but that Latin enriched his life in every way. He also had the most beautiful girlfriend who was with him for years and he left her millions. I miss him.

    I always love when a room expresses the person living there, as with this one - when seeing it there's no doupt that here lives a person who loves books and language and that pillow with the dog is Fantastic.

    Amazing video as usual! Although I'm not planning to study Literature at university, this was still great advice and it was so interesting to hear about what you've been up to. I like independent study with a lot of things, so I will hopefully like university because of that.
    I agree regarding exams and English - although I've only completed my AS Level in Literature (but this week I started A2 work), I found like I much preferred doing the coursework. I could explain things, spend time researching and perfecting exactly what I wanted to say in order to provide the most interesting and original debate, whereas in the exam I found it more stressful. In other subjects where there are very specific facts, figures and statistics to remember, exams are understandable, but I'm never sure about English exams.

    I unfortunately had a horrible experience at uni and didn't even last a semester, but that's because I didn't know how to handle my anxiety that suddenly flared up. especially with a theatre heavy schedule. However, hearing about your experience makes me think I could go back in the fall. Or at least start taking online classes in the fall.

    This was a wonderfully informational and eloquent video. It has really helped calm some of my nerves about starting uni and doing an English degree, and also helped make me more excited! As with you, the thing I'm most nervous about is what the lecturers will expect of me, but watching this video has helped. Thank you! :)

    'An introduction to Literature, Criticism and Theory' by Andrew Bennett and Nicholas Royle may be of help but I haven't read many books specifically about literary movements.

    I had the exact same experience of suddenly feeling "at home" on the campus of my college, and I knew that I had to apply and that I would be accepted. I used to give tours of the school for prospective students, and I used to tell every group about that feeling that I had, and that many friends and people around campus had expressed the same feeling, and that I was sure that everyone would know the school that they were meant to study at when they felt it. I'm so happy to hear that you felt it, too!

    Hi there. I am currently a final year undergraduate English Literature student at my local university. Like you said, learning literature with an introduction to new reading materials (which is out of my comfort reading genres) and analysing it with contexts and literary theories truly get me into loving this course even more. :D

    Awesome video! I'm looking at studying literature at uni, I'm currently coming to the end of AS lit, which I really enjoy, I love the texts etc. The idea of uni scares me a bit, do you get a lot of help with your essays? Bc that's something I feel I would need.

    • @Claire_Fenby
      @Claire_Fenby  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kirsten wise You can book as many tutorials (one on one discussion with your lecturer) as you need to discuss your thoughts and essay plans - Tutorials are amazing!. Although they can't look, read or give any detailed feedback on your finished essay. University at first is scary but it soon becomes normal and a lot of fun! Good luck :)

    I have a question, I adore reading and I love reading contemporary literature and American literature. I'm just curious to know if majoring in English Literature doesn't only depend on reading Shakespeare and Chaucer? Not that there's anything wrong with Shakespeare and Chaucer I'm just wondering if the courses heavily lay on them two?

    • @Claire_Fenby
      @Claire_Fenby  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all! The emphasis on 'English literature' just means that the texts you will study will all be in English. All universities in England study one Shakespeare text because I think it is mandatory (I could be wrong). Pick a course that specialises in the type of literature you are interested in. For instance the majority of the texts I have studied have been post 1700.

    Sometimes I wish I'd chosen English Lit as my degree. But although I love books and love discussing them, I love reading for pleasure, and past experiences with A-Level made me associate English Lit with an absence of that pleasure. Probably highly wrong, I know. But your video brings up a sort of wistfulness in me. I won't change my degree - I'm very happy with the one I'm doing - but I do sometimes wonder 'what if?'.

    • @Claire_Fenby
      @Claire_Fenby  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      What are you studying? I always wanted to do a degree in Social History and changed in my second year of A Levels. I always wonder 'what if?' too. My A Level English wasn't up to much either so I don't blame you!

      ReadingBukowski Medieval & Renaissance Studies is my academic degree of choice! I changed my mind so many times over what I wanted to do, though, from Classics to Archaeology, Viking Studies to History. So indecisive of me!

      Compulsory contact hours are seminars, workshops and lectures. Tutorials are voluntary (you book them yourself). A tutorial is where can have a one to one chat with a professor or a writer in residence.

    Hello, I really hope you will reply this. I need to choose a university and was thinking of studying literature. I'm really terrified because I don't have any experience in it! the reason why I chose it is because I love to write and read, yet I don't know what studying LITERATURE will entail. I am so sooolo terrified I'll make a bad decision because how can I like something Ive never done before? I don't know what studying literature does, I dont know if it's stressful or a meaningless experience. I only know I like to write and read alot and like language, and thus im choosing this degree based of that. btw im from an asian country, graduated with a design diploma and am thinking of trying at an australia uni, maybe univerisity of sydney. what can I do?
