Rick doesn't understand European people are victims of poverty and terrible affliction by violent occult regimes. We are supposed to inspire them to learn safe food handling procedures and build new architecture.

Btw, anyone who says Rick talking about the rest of the world is America-bashing is sorely missing the point. Seeing an American this sensible, open, cultured, knowledgeable and mature does well for America. Rick is America at its best, and he makes Americans fashionable, understandable and welcoming.

Rick doesn't understand who we are. Americans defected from the monarchies of Europe and the British chased the pilgrims to America and gave weapons to the Indians to kill the settlers.
The British commandeered merchant ships causing starvation of pilgrim settlers in the winter months.
The cruel catholic monarchies and Abbeys with their dark dungeons are horrific.

I’ve listened / watched you for many years. In 1999 I started budget traveling with going to Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. I’ve experienced many of the things you speak about. Since then I’ve traveled with OAT in Boston. I will consider your company in the future when travel is opened back up from COVID. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information.

Yes Peggy, i started travel the same way as you did, then i decided to venture much farther, outside of Europe & i'm so happy that i did. As a part Scandinavian woman, i visited all of Scandinavia first, but i always knew i'd venture much farther.
Since those early days, i've seen the most incredible countries, all over our planet & i've met most of the world's most hospitable humans, in countries such as Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, UAE, Turkey, Russia, Nepal, Mongolia, Thailand, Philippines, Japan, Korea, Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, & other countries & i was simply blown away beyond belief.
I've also visited numerous countries in Central Asia, ie: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan etc; & i visited Rep of Georgia & Armenia.
All countries visited over a 20 year period & God willing, more to visit over the next few years & hopefully beyond.
The saddest thing i've learnt, is that the countries i just mentioned above, are the ones that the media most dislike & condemn, yet in truth, they're the world's most friendly & hospitable countries, without a shadow of a doubt. I was treated with true respect & treated like royalty, yet i didn't ask for it, or even expect it.
It's just that many haven't visited these global regions, so they've no personal experience whatsoever.
I always encourage people i know personally & meet, to travel far & wide, to not be afraid & to not believe all the negative media/news hype, that's so often drilled into our innocent minds.
I think that the media, almost always shows the dark or dangerous side of certain countries, but when you get to those specific countries, you quickly gain a completely different picture & perspective & almost always, it's all good.
As Rick says, when you travel & open your mind & heart to the rest of the world & not just your own, you learn so much, you grow as a person, you become more humane, respectful & compassionate & it's pure magic, it really is.
Sorry for my lengthy msg. I wish you all the best & happy travels to you too!

A sosialistic capitalist promoting his company and books, actually making sence.
He has some very good points about usa vs the rest of the world, and he promotes his thaughts in a very american way. And he got balls. Telling an american audience that terrorism is something you had comming is like telling the french their cheese is a health hassard.
I really loved this show. It's a real capitalist arguing for other solutinons. He Thinks it will benefit both his business and the american people positively. And I agree.
I'm european, have lived in america and learned to love the amaerican people. But I'm also very sceptic to the american government. As a citizen of a country that have our freedom mostly thanks to american human and econonomic support in ww2, Im forever greatfull. But I'm not a fan of your current foreign policies.
You invaded Irak becouse you did'nt like Saddam Husain, and you tried to convince everybody that he had a part in 9/11. I supported your invention in Afghanistan, but ure reasons for invading Irak was just bullshit.
Saddam was one of the wors dictators in the world, but that did'nt give you the right to play out your moral supeririority and kill 100 of thousends of Irakies.
Your governments history of defending the american lifestyle since ww2 is fillled with crimes against humaninity. Supporting and funding murderous dictatorships in south america and around the world. American freedom became others slavery and death in your relentless and amoral chase for the american lifestyle . The idea of freedom and eqality was limited to within your borders. The rest of the world became just a fence against the wrong ideoligy.
If you are not with us, youre against us has been your new reason to fuck with other country's independence.
America used to be an island of hope for the prosecuted and poor, and you still have enough positive fans around the world to save your reputation. But to be great again you have to abondend the notion of beeing moralistic superior.
I love the american idea, and the american people.
And I would love to be in love with you again

Please do not put down the Middle East & North Africa.
If a person has never personally visited these countries/global regions, they really should NOT judge.
The countries you mention, they are some of the world's friendliest & most humane & hospitable countries on planet earth.
I have visited many years ago myself and there are many you tube videos abound, created by Americans, Europeans, Australians, etc; who have visited & have created videos for all to see. These videos are truly eye opening & enlightening. They're certainly worth a watch!
In ref to the US/Iraq war....The US had much to do with the war in Iraq & the ensuing issues there & there's much info abound online discussing this.
Ironically, this is why Rick does these videos. To "educate" we humans. To help open our minds & hearts to travel & to meet humans everywhere & to gain more realistic perspectives about all humans across our planet.
I think the US has huge issues too, on many levels & is certainly "no" utopia.

1:42:16 Rick makes some really general subjective statements about Europe in this presentation that simply are not true. For example, in Sweden, a majority of people vote for non-socialist parties. Socialism has been in steady decline the past 50 years. During the late sixties, the Social Democrats had over 50% of the popular vote, now they have on average something between 25 and 30 percent of the popular vote and are currently reliant on other parties to stay in power. The city of Stockholm has a non-socialist local government. Here are also a few quotes from Wikipedia about certain laws in Sweden: "Cannabis in Sweden is illegal for all purposes." and "The laws on prostitution in Sweden make it illegal to buy sex.".

I think it is kind of an insult, to the collective intelligence of his followers, that Rick Steves thinks he can just give a talk full of streaming opinions. One of the biggest most profound insights which is gained from world travel is to see the world, and the people who inhabit it, from many perspectives, and lose one's judgmentalism. Rick Steves has only become more arrogant and complacent as he now feels he's entitled to spew his biases. I don't watch him anymore because he's predominantly excited about his beers, wines, and whiskeys.

Check out the Swiss and their per capita gun ownership, very low murder rate. The military keep their weapons at home and they used to be able to keep their sidearm, if allowed, at retirement. Czech Republic has all legal drugs too. I lived in the Netherlands for a year and only one of my Dutch friends smoked pot regularly, I agree with you there. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_Switzerland.

Global travel is a really wonderful thing & does help to open our minds & hearts to all humans across our planet and it helps to enlighten us & to broaden our perspectives and much more.
Personally, yes i have travelled & i do believe it's helped me to grow into a much better person. A more open minded, respectful & understanding person. For me, it's truly a win/win.
