You can tell you had to go through learning this. I have been an instructor over the years and you have the skill to explain how to accomplish a task that an individual does not know how to do. i tried at least 5 other tutorials, my flames looked more like the the stench wafting up from a land fill! Your demonstration started with how to begin and then slowly explained the steps to creating the flames I wanted to depict. Thanks for the help!!
you are fantastic mate,I have over many years spray painted hundreds of cars and trucks purely a hobby sort of thing,I did own a airbrush but lack of knowledge never got the hang of it.thanks to your videos I have just ordered a new airbrush and compressor to do a bit of detailing ,on a couple of stock cars I recently resprayed, Thanks for taking the time to upload all your tips.
Its not about bigger compressors folks. Its how you reduce your paint and how you use your air. Plus...FILTERS are a must especially with automotive paints. PLUS my air kit came with compressor, 2 brushes, cords, filters, mixing supplies etc for $100 usd. Hmm. They can lay great paint. Now for this video... I've locked it in. I wanted to know this exact style. Now I do! I'm makin a stencil card like yours. I am just startin in airbrushing, but have an excellent grip on depth of an image. Thanks!
Went from wanting to throw my airbrush gear out to understanding how to do flames after watching your video. And saying that I’ve been watching video after video of people showing how to do flames but you actually show it!
Been wanting to do Flames of this calibur for a while, Great job explaining & demonstrating, Very easy to follow. Thanks for sharing & may you be Blessed with success!!! keep it HOTT!
Fantastic. Thank you thank you. Have watched loads of clips on here but they never explain what they are doing or why. You helped me see why they are using a template! Am going to go away now and practise, practise, practise!!! Thanks again!
That is a brilliant effect, I was loving the Hot-Rod flames untill I saw this realistic flames, it almost looks like a hologram the way each layer sinks further into it !!!
What you showed us is a real confidence builder if we're beginners. I'm doing 1/25 scale model cars and found some awesome small stencils designed by Chuck Bauman. Now if I just didn't have such shaky hands!
As you get better , and your needs change I recommend Iwata airbrushes to meet most of your needs . To get a full coat like he uses to apply the candy colour, SATA or DevilBiss make great detail guns . For those though you may want to get a bigger compressor to handle the airflow . Other airbrushes that come highly recommended are the Harder and Steinbeck lines , and Devilbiss Dagr . I have used Paasche, Thayer and Chandler, Testor , and Iwata models . Badger I believe makes Thayer and Chandler
One cool thing we figured out a long time ago, that you can usually request some free toner from auto paint stores, and if you mix toner into clear, you magically end up with candy. AND you can mix them to your liking -- more or less color opacity... And WAY cheaper than buying House of Kolor candy. You can also get away with economy clears for that, because you'll always go over it with the final coats of something really good quality.
That looks great man. I'll have to try harder. ;-) Now, don't be a firebug people! Thats illegal. But when you observe a fire, there's sort of nothing at the base of any individual flame, but the heat accelerates upwards and draws the flame inwards towards a vague point even when the flame is moving around a lot. What you've painted here is a fire, so all the flames are interacting with each other's currents and flows, and it will always looks quite random. Great job.5/5 and fave
dude you do a great job at explaining, now i feel much more confident about this flame job i need to do on a friends guitar, i'll let you know how that goes. thanks
I think it was the G23 back when he recorded this. I can't remember, but I can ask him if you really want to know. Tony's upgraded a lot since then, so I don't think he even uses this brush anymore.
I've bought a VERY simple compressor and airbrush for $100, Its great for practice and I'm getting my basic techniques down. Can you recommend a brand or airbrush I can upgrade to? this cheap one keeps clogging/splattering.
@H60hadgi You can, but remember that the trans colors are still a pigment and not a candy dye, so go really really light on the layers. Transparents will eventually build up and you'll have a semi-opaque.
great video but i have a question... the candy green paint does not cover the black color??? i do my flames in colors instead of paintin em with white....
Perfect I have been looking for a good vid on making flames this is the best info I have found, I relied on the stencils way too much and what you say and do makes perfect sense , thanks
that's hella awesome! how long should i wait before trying it on a canvas...such as a bike? I'm a beginner airbrusher, with pretty good artistic abilities/quick learner also.
regulate the pressure. turn it down a notch. also, don't hold the brush in one location waiting for the paint to come out. Start the stroke and continue in one fluid motion as you lay down your lines.
hello friend first of all a big hello from Venezuela, is very, very good work and I have a question for you and I would love to have your answer .My question is this . that makes use airbrush? and model ... many thanks and a big hug from Venezuela . many thanks.
This was a great video and helped a lot. I'm just getting started airbrushing and I'm practicing on my own bike before attempting to do someone else's. I'm sure I will be checking out you other videos. Great job!
Tight "How to", Devil Dog. I am using Createx since I am a beginner. Can I use the transparent colors instead of the Candy colors? Just go over the white with transparent blue, or will the effect not come out as good as with the candy?
wow - thank you for this, you make it look soo easy man! I'm painting my first RC lexan body and plan to use your technique. I'll post when it's done!!
Great vid, really simple to follow and the explanations of the steps is easy to understand. Just starting out with airbrushing, thanks for showing its not magic =).
this was amasing. the way u axplaind it, even I understand it :) ur good and I have been praktising for some time. this gave me another boost, thx m8 :)
i love air brush and i love your works! i want to buy a airbrush set and learn it.. can you pls make more nice tricks for newbies (me) ? thank you! [sry for my bad english]
I love my badger airbrushes. haven't tried iwata yet but going to, any recommendations on which iwata brush I should get? I have the krome and anthem by badger and master g23.
you can make them yourself out of plywood, and it doesn't have to be a french cure as in the vid, as long as you have a shape with the size of the curves you want to create, if you watch a vid of ed hubbs, you will find what he is using in that vid you see a kind of flowerish template, which has more curves, but you don't have the same sharp part as in the french curve. Anyway, good luck ;)
@dddduuuu11 that is easy just go for any store where they sell graphic stuff and they will have these plastic shape line... i use to use them in technical and graphic design at school... common stuff!! but very handy!!! good idea!!
What paint r u using dude?? house of colour? Com-art Airbrush colours? or Auto-air? & what is the difference on the same brand when they say opaque colour or clear.. to do with the shine or covering properties??? help!!! got the missing link there!!
Do you always spray clear candy over whole area, what if you don't want the background to tint (like if your spraying a white hood)? Do you have another method?
@thenande I've heard (never tried this myself) that if you mix acrylic floor polish with transparent paint (Createx), it gives you a "candy" type paint. I want to try this on a piece of scrap metal before doing a real project with it. If you try it, let us know how it works out.
I need a question ,I must to do a flames on a bike tank but is bike tank is matte ,what is the solution :matte clear coat?(to protect my airbrush paint)thank you for you response.
Now can you do this on metal or will it rub off cause id like to do this technique on my computers case since the sides are removable but im worried if people come over and try rubbing it or something it will smear or even worse get it on something else of mine like my carpet if their dumb enough. Ty
REALLY want to know the exact model Airbrush you are using there? Also, will the Revolution (.5mm) or Performance (.35mm) series from IWATA work as well? I have one and just purchased the other (second one). In addition, the airbrush pros at Coast recommended going even thinner than 2:1 with the reducer for better flow. Is that a possibility? Thanks!!
hi can you help me if i had a black piece of plastic with a skull airbrushed on how would i get clear green flames (what i mean is over the skull you can see the clear green flames because its over white but you cant even see that the clear green has been used on top of the black) who would i get clear green flames to be seen on the black and over the skull
sinsofman81 think most airbrushes are pretty much the same, just minor differences on how to the paint is fed. Just remember to use automotive paint on cars and such.
This is a very good video and it help Alot...But im trying to put down flames on 1/25 or 1/24 scale model cars and with enamel paint.....the score is 1 win 1loss and now im confused ,A smaller and tighter template im thinking !? Do you have suggestins??
hello i just baught a iwata eclips and im trying to learn how to airbrush flames but everytime i start off a line i have this bursting of pressure making me paint the line a lil heavy or makes a deeper line then what i want.. how can i control of strong the paint flow comes out..?
Great video, I have a question my airbrush is shooting air and I'm not pressing the trigger is this problem fixable or do I need a new airbrush. It is the Iwata eclipse
Hi bro, your work is crazy sick man awesom. I'm a beginer on flames, I've tried some of fancy true fire stencil, and I just don't understand how to use them. What stencil at you using it looks very simple?
Man, you are still around? The resolution is pretty "tough" in comparison of today's possibilites. BUT : the content is good. There was no boring second! your continuous narrative describing what you do in real time (?) really let me see how it works (and how much practice one needs). I wonder what level of Airbrushing skill you have nowadays :)
You can tell you had to go through learning this. Been struggling with True flames for months now and in less then two minutes he gives me a breakthrough. Subscribed.

Thanks for taking the time to upload all your tips.
This has got to be the most professional and helpful video.about realistic airbrush flames on TH-cam thanks bro.

Very informative! Thank you!The best educational video I've seen yet on how to actually lay out the pattern. You're the man!
Fantastic. Thank you thank you. Have watched loads of clips on here but they never explain what they are doing or why. You helped me see why they are using a template! Am going to go away now and practise, practise, practise!!!
Thanks again!

if not for this video... i never would have started airbrushing. and ive loved every minute of it.
Thanks for this tutorial man. Short, simple, to the point and its hella helpful. Nice job

It's so fun to see that you never go to try and explore different techniques ... Fun and thanks. Chris Sweden
Realy cool--I have sketched about 25 in pencil, and this helps me to understand how to begin the airbrush exercises

Awesome I’m just getting into airbrushing it’s a whole other animal. I’ve been drawing for years but this is definitely a new element.
I have been looking for a good video on realistic flames and this is the best by far...
FRIGGIN' AWESOME STUFF THERE CHIEF !!! NICELY DONE !!!!
not many professionals share info like this...
keep up the good work
Happy Motoring
That looks great man.
I'll have to try harder. ;-)

I think it was the G23 back when he recorded this. I can't remember, but I can ask him if you really want to know. Tony's upgraded a lot since then, so I don't think he even uses this brush anymore.
Thankyou for an easy to follow tutorial, you made it look so easy that even i can do . thumbs up...
I've bought a VERY simple compressor and airbrush for $100, Its great for practice and I'm getting my basic techniques down. Can you recommend a brand or airbrush I can upgrade to? this cheap one keeps clogging/splattering.
I think these are your best looking flames!
@H60hadgi You can, but remember that the trans colors are still a pigment and not a candy dye, so go really really light on the layers. Transparents will eventually build up and you'll have a semi-opaque.
WOW thx,,,,, My 1st try they look pretty good..... Cant wait for the 15 and 20th try...... thanks again and please keep making these videos
Amazing technique, and really easy to follow, I just hope that I get good enough with my new airbrush to make use of it.
great video but i have a question...
the candy green paint does not cover the black color???
i do my flames in colors instead of paintin em with white....
@bboy0610 candy green, from what i understand, is a sort of semi translucent paint that will look different depending what base coat it is on.
Perfect I have been looking for a good vid on making flames this is the best info I have found, I relied on the stencils way too much and what you say and do makes perfect sense , thanks
Thanks.
that's hella awesome! how long should i wait before trying it on a canvas...such as a bike? I'm a beginner airbrusher, with pretty good artistic abilities/quick learner also.
Your videos are really awesome and really helpful in learning to airbrush! - Great Thanks for that great job you are doing.
This was great! I'm new to brushing and find this very helpful. And everyones comments good and bad are are a bit helpful too.
Hi nice tutorial, I understand that candy colors are mixed with clear coat, but in this case you are spraying reduced candy?
regulate the pressure. turn it down a notch. also, don't hold the brush in one location waiting for the paint to come out. Start the stroke and continue in one fluid motion as you lay down your lines.
hello friend first of all a big hello from Venezuela, is very, very good work and I have a question for you and I would love to have your answer .My question is this . that makes use airbrush? and model ... many thanks and a big hug from Venezuela . many thanks.
thank you so much for shared and teach us the best techniques, regards from Costa Rica .
Brilliant, this is exactly what I needed to see Thanks
This was a great video and helped a lot. I'm just getting started airbrushing and I'm practicing on my own bike before attempting to do someone else's. I'm sure I will be checking out you other videos. Great job!
you may, but you can go back with transparent black when youre done and "tighten" it up.
Coast Air brushes has stencils like those for decent prices. They have full size (regular car), Micro and Nano (2x3" size).
Tight "How to", Devil Dog. I am using Createx since I am a beginner. Can I use the transparent colors instead of the Candy colors? Just go over the white with transparent blue, or will the effect not come out as good as with the candy?
ive already bought an airbrush set and colors lol. Im going to customize some drums like this, i cant wait
you're awesome airbrushtricks..... i love your work
awesome flames dud you totally helped me get a better idea what to do !!
wow - thank you for this, you make it look soo easy man! I'm painting my first RC lexan body and plan to use your technique. I'll post when it's done!!
Awesome.
so when you spray the candy, is that mostly just over the white or is it kinda over all of it??
Great vid, really simple to follow and the explanations of the steps is easy to understand. Just starting out with airbrushing, thanks for showing its not magic =).
this was amasing. the way u axplaind it, even I understand it :) ur good and I have been praktising for some time. this gave me another boost, thx m8 :)

Do you have one of these done with Kandy Apple Red, Tangerine Kandy and Pagon Gold or Yellow Kandy? It would be a big help for me! Thanks
Damn, thanks for the insight. Very helpful video's, thanks for posting them!
you can also use a very tin plywood to create that round thingy.
This is a sweet video thanks u have shown me something different. Cool
What good Tutorials!!! VERY NICE!
Kandy will allow the white to show through and make it bright.. Opaque green will just cover it.
That looks awesome bro.
Keep it up.

sinsofman81 think most airbrushes are pretty much the same, just minor differences on how to the paint is fed. Just remember to use automotive paint on cars and such.
so if you paint this out doors would it like come of?

EXELENT!!!!!! hey do u think this would work with just skectch on regular paper and shit cuz i dont have airbrush :\

Man, you are still around? The resolution is pretty "tough" in comparison of today's possibilites. BUT : the content is good. @voodooicepops im pretty sure its the Iwata 4207 Eclipse HC-CS Airbrush
What stencil are you using please? Many thanks in anticipation of your reply.

I cant airbrush yet, but thank you, I'v been looking at a design for something and this is it, cheers.
Thanks that sounds easy and understandable
