as a drummer for the last 48 years, this has been a beauty to appreciate musically. recently i listened again to it, and cried. i had never appreciated the story and it's beauty within it's horror. wow. also, can any other band say that they have taught kids to play in 7/8? and without making it scary. sometimes the feel is more natural, than counting it. ev xoxo
That is absolutely gorgeous. You've been a drummer for 48 years!? That's.... so amazing. Wowwww.... I love this comment. Songs can really move and push you to emotional boundaries you never noticed before. And it's beautiful. Thanks so much for watching!!! 💙🎸🤘
Such a great song and a great performance. I was in that crowd and seeing the full song after they had only been playing sections of it for years was amazing. So glad to see you enjoying it (and digging in deep)
It really was an amazing performance. It was beautiful!!! Omg you watched the playthrough too? Yeah it was... omg crazy 🤣 but really fun. Thanks so much dude! Stay Awesome! 💙🎸🤘
'I don't know what is happening!!' That's an accurate assessment, especially while attempting to sight-read this extremely complicated piece of music. I am impressed with your playing and your willingness to tackle this, which was Rush's statement of defiance to the music industry. It took up the entire first side of the album. It's pronounced "Twenty-one-Twelve." They wrote it as a middle finger to their record label powers-that-be, who had been unimpressed with their previous output as not being commercial enough and wanted them to do shorter, more radio-friendly songs. '2112' was their epic response to this, and after that song came out, the label was like 'We don't know what they are doing, but it seems to be working, so we're going to leave them alone.' After this, Rush had license to do whatever they wanted, musically. On your own time, you might want to check out the 'comic book version' of this song here on TH-cam. It does a good job of telling the song's story with imagery. Also, the live version you chose from the Molson Ampitheatre is awesome, too. I definitely suggest you still check out the live medley version of 'By-Tor/In the End/In the Mood/2112'. It's one of their best live performances in a career full of them.
Omg that's amazing. So glad they literally forced the label to let them do whatever they want because Rush is THAT amazing!!! That's so cool! I'm really glad you say I should check out the medley too. I will in the future - I can't wait!!! Thanks for watching and this was absolutely insane to sightread 🤣🎸💙🤘
I remember how eager we all were to get tickets when we heard they would be taking the complete 2112 out of storage for this concert. They hadn't done the whole thing for years. And that remains my favourite concert venue too. It was a treat because Rush normally only ever played the NHL arena up here (in Toronto) after 1981. It's an amphitheatre located on Lake Ontario, across from the Canadian National Exhibition Grounds. I was fortunate to have been able to see them on one of the two nights they played there that summer.
@@CrazyAwesome I pretty much saw all the tours since A Farewell to Kings in '77. 😁 Once I saw them in 1977, I said "These guys are my favorite band of all time!" and it stayed that way since. So every time they toured, I'd see them. That one with all of 2112 was the first time they played without an opening band and instead did a longer show consisting of two sets (and encore). It was AMAZING!
Hahaha, dude, what happened? LOL. This piece slayed you! Respect man. You are quite an amazing player and you have a ton of potential already at a young age. No doubt you will go far in life....but this one kicked your arse! Hahaha. It's just funny cause I've seen you play stuff that seemed a lot harder and you killed it. But I mean you doing all these songs without ever hearing them before which in itself is freaking amazing. I'm sure if you listened to this one maybe once or twice through you would learn it perfect. Keep up the great playing CA!
Yeah this one kicked my butt 🤣 although I kinda hung on though. Awww thank you so much! I appreciate that... yeah if I listened beforehand it would definitely be eaiser.... BUT where's the fun in that? People love seeing me suffer as a guitarist because it's entertaining 🤣🤣 FOR THE CONTENT! LOL but seriously thank you so much for your comment. I'm going to keep playing guitar for as long as I have breath in me! Stay Awesome man! 🤘🎸💙
I agree with you 100% that Rush is just on a different level. Ever since I really discovered Rush a few years ago, taking the deep dive down the rabbit hole of Rush, after 40 years of really knowing about 10 songs of theirs, which were just the singles that actually got airplay on rock radio back in the day because the were "radio friendly" being just a few minutes long. Beyond those songs, the only album I owned by Rush since the 80's was their debut album, which didn't even feature the late great Neil Peart! John Rutsey was a one of the better drummers in rock & roll at that time (Neil Peart not even being "discovered" yet), but was a couple of tiers down from Neil, Neil being in the very top tier of drummers, of course. But since I have been exposed to their entire discography in the past few years, now owning all but two of their albums so far, I find it hard to go back to all the other bands that were my favorites before, 90% of my music listening is now Rush, and when I do listen to other favorite bands previous to my Rush journey, they just don't sound quite as good to my ears anymore, and all my favorite songs from those bands, when I hear them now, all I can think about is how much better these same songs would be if they were played by Rush! To me, if I imagine all rock bands in history on a scale of elevation from earth, with the most famous standing on clouds at varying cloud layers representing levels of greatness, starting with the lowest layer of stratus, then alto, cirrus and cumulonimbus accordingly, Rush would be looking down on them all from the surface of the moon.
It's hard to imagine a group of musicians better than Rush. They not only understand music insanely well, but they understand how to tell a story as well. They can tell so many amazing stories with their lyrics, voice, instruments, and make you feel engaged with every step. That's what really separates them too. They make it feel so important and essential. I love Rush!!! 🤘💙🎸
I’m really impressed with your cold playing RUSH music before actually listening to it! You’re talented and I enjoy watching you discover RUSH and your appreciation of Alex’s playing- he is awesome and my favorite guitarist. I hope you explore some of their earlier works. Check out “Natural Science” and “La Villa Strangiato”! R.I.P. Neil Peart ❤️

This is from the Test For Echo tour. In St Louis, we were lucky to get the show with all 2112 twice on the beginning and end of the tour. Was at both shows...once indoors and once outdoors. This is pretty much like watching The Who do all of Tommy. Never again will stuff like this happen again.
@@CrazyAwesome you could say that....seen probably hundreds of concerts...not counting local stuff. I'm a bass player, and my brother got me 2112 for Christmas when it was brand new. when you are young...that F's you up....lol

One of the few songs where the studio version rules. Geddy’s voice worked much better with the dual roles this song has and the instruments sounded much clearer. As someone else mentioned, the youtube comic video tells the story clearly. I’d say this is my second favourite Rush song behind La Villa Strangiato. Cool second half. That was different.😊
@@CrazyAwesome Their live performance at their Exit Stage Left tour is what I would consider one of, if not THE greatest live performance by anyone and the fact that it was only 3 guys is unbelievable, but the song itself isn’t way up there for me. Off the top of my head, my top 5 are probably the two mentioned, Freewil, Bytor and the Snowdog (studio only as it has a great guitar solo in second half not done live) and Jacob’s Ladder. If you haven’t heard La Villa Strangiato, I’d suggest watching the official music video. In that version, the sound of Alex’s guitar gives me a chill and makes my eyes watery lol. The song is an instrumental.
Fantastic song and a finger to their record company who wanted them to play short pop songs as they didn't like the direction the band was taking. A quick synopsis of the lyrics. It is a planet that after a war is taken over by ruling priests in a Dystopian world. Every thing is controlled by the priests. The protagonist finds a guitar and starts to play it. He takes it to the priests who destroy it and tell him a lie that it was one of the things that brought down the Elder race. He goes home dejected and has a dream of an Oracle showing him a world of music and individual talents and pursuits. He wakes up feeling completely saddened by his restricted life and contemplates suicide. The Elder race shows up and destroys the temples and consumes control. When 2112 was a success the record company never bothered them again. Rush had assumed control.
That is such a unique and beautiful concept. I love the story to this song and it was masterfully done. Thank you so much for watching and explaining 💙🎸🤘
Rush is an incredible band. As good live as they were in studio. As a life long fan I’ve developed preferences of course, it’s difficult not to. I prefer the 2112 studio version, Geddy’s voice in it is incredible. I prefer the Montreal live version of Xanadu, it’s beyond comprehension that 3 people were able to create that music live. I could type here all day, but I won’t bore everyone to death. Loved the reaction.
