I was 16, and had just dropped my first girlfriend off at home. To put it bluntly, I wanted her in a bad way. While driving home that summer night with the windows down, this song came on the radio. It was the first time a song read my soul. Now, I'm almost 50, and that girlfriend is my wife. This song takes me back to that night, with that same feeling every time I hear it.
Hi would love to know what you think of my 17 year old grandsons cover of this th-cam.com/video/zenNOP-dWJg/w-d-xo.html

Yeah, right.
Sounds like private pleasure moment

My condolences. It is a very good song, and your wife had a great taste in music.

One thing I appreciated about Bruce's music was it was all about the working man and real problems, Not just the stereotypical love song
Wow, you said it. He is THE master of this. Normal people. I agree. His works are epic. Noone compares.

Yea bc he was a working man he worked real hard didn't he
He’s such a fraud. Tax cheat and hangs with the elites who could give shits about the “working man” unless they’re buying his $2000 tickets.
Oh yeah ??? You always have horie rich women chasing after you ??? Like an common guy ..
My late fiance would sing this to me almost every day he passed on Aug 18th 2020. My sister and I went to the graveside last fall and I was telling him how much I missed him singing that song to me. Well we get to the gas station she and my 5 year old nephew go in the store and I turn the xm radio 6 channel 20 and it's Bruce Springsteen and the E street band station and this song came on and played from start to finish❤ I know you are there always my Bill xoxo

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.

My favorite Bruce Springsteen song, by far, it seems like this song lasts only 30 seconds every time I hear it. It never gets old. Ever.
I wish he'd remake this song an make it longer

Bruce Springsteen is a very good actor. That opening scene is intense. He can't look her straight in the eyes, his breathing speeds up, he seems insecure. Just really great acting that I never noticed before.
I was thinking the same thing... surprised he never pursued a more serious acting career
This song is about wanting something you can't have. The song is short, and you want more of it, but can't have it, which is why you love it. The song is not too short, it's just right. If it was any longer, it would kill your desire. Sometimes, wanting something is better than having it. If we had it, we'd just fk it up anyway. You know you would. There are things in this world that are better off without us.

i watched this and was just thinking how genuine he was talking to the woman, not just dry delivery, but speaking under his breath saying goodbye, knowing its just pointless anyway, kinda stumbling through a word here and there, like real, a real reaction.
Bruce has been a lifelong sufferer from depression. He spends long recovery periods between albums. He retreats from the world for his own sanity.

Hey little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go and leave you all alone? Mhmm
I got a bad desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do? Oh no
I can take you higher
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby
Edgy and dull and cut a six inch valley
Through the middle of my skull
At night I wake up with the sheets soaking wet
And a freight train running through the middle of my head
Only you can cool my desire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire
Oh, oh, oh, I'm on fire

Nah it’s perfect. Leaves you with a sense of longing just like the lyrics suggest.
Lexi So true.
Wish it never ended
Back in the 80's watching this video as a kid, I always wondered how Bruce Springsteen was going to get back home at the end of this video.
I know, me too. According to her, they live way up in the hills so Bruce is a long way from home. Either he will be doing a lot of walking and bus rides (if the buses are still running) or finding a pay phone and calling up a cab, but paying a grip in the process.
I still wonder. Does he take a bus? Call a taxi? How does he get home???
Vanessa Enlow
The stupid dumbass probably walked all the way home! Even if he didn't he's such an idiot for taking it to her house when she said not to! And does that help get him that women? NO! She just forgets about him! What a dumbass! She would have remembered him better if she had come back for it! No wonder so many men are stupid AFC's today. They are probably Springsteen fans!
lol once he gets to a highway he hitch hikes! But since he has so much desire the walking doesn't matter anyway :)
He called his private helicopter cause he's Bruce Springsteen...
Like it was yesterday…, I had just left Army boot camp heading for duty in Germany when this album came out. Never more proud to be an American than hearing this song playing outside Frankfurt airport in summer 1984. I’m still on fire!
What did you do in Germany other than booze and beautiful German chicks? It's a criminal empire the US. You should be ashamed.
I was about 3 weeks away from finishing the 9th grade when this was released. My mom and stepdad were WAY bigger Springsteen fans than myself. I did however like several off Born in the 🇺🇸.
And he still wants me

I love how the music video is about how class distinctions between two people can rob them of romance. Totally changes how I view the song when I listen to it.
It was when she said “We live way out in the hills”
She dug him. But he didn’t wanna meet the husband.
so, i grew up in the 80's, my childhood was 79-97. My music was was mainly Cure/Joy Division. I was thinking about this song today, and how i wouldnt dare tell my friends i like springstein. i figure 25-30 years later i can like it, playing through my head everyonce and a while for that long. I sit down with an acoustic guitar today, to finally play this, with in two tries i had it down, beautiful muted rhythm and vocals. right away, its a natural, cool song. wife loved it. if you play an instrument, play this for youre girl tonight, you have no idea how it pays off. if i did this decades ago, would have lost virginity that much sooner. cheers.
Same for me. Bauhaus, Cure, Joy Divison, Gang of Four, DNA, etc.. But I love this song. It's very romantic.
And I love him too. As a man and as a musician. Respect for Bruce Springsteen. One of the best .. Ever
+Brendan Garman AMEN BROTHER!!!!!!!
Ha ha , tell them Man , nothing to afraid of , music makes the world go round !!!
That's a long ass childhood lol. If you were born in 1979, then it's 82-91 or so... about age 3-12. Teenagers are kids but when I hear the word childhood, I think of believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny and stuff.
And it does seem like all genres of music from back then flow together more these days, it can ALL get lumped into just being called "80s music" now. I mean everyone who grew up then is in their 40s, so of course it's not gonna be as cliquey and genre specific as when the fans were 14. Plus people's tastes also can mature with age. There's 80s metalheads who now admit they like Madonna and stuff.
I remember that in 84 I didn't have money even to buy this record... hard times. In 2014, I met Bruce in South Africa and he was very kind - I cried at the hotel later. Thanks for everything, Bruce. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.

I think this is my fav Bruce song. It is brilliant.
Bruce was a 35 year old man asking if a little girls dad was home because he has a bad desire.
This video had great production values for the era in which it was produced. It doesn't really look dated 30-plus years later. I wish music videos were still like this...
I was just thinking the same thing
Yes and no, in my opinion. ; ] The crappy warble when the song begins is just as if you're listening to this on a tape deck in a car back in the '80s. However, in all fairness, I'm sure that wasn't in the original release. VEVO left awful production blunders in other videos, too. Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" comes to mind, with a squelch at its 3:57 mark -- right in the middle of the song's arguably best part, which is, again arguably, one of the nicest guitar solos of the '80s.
The foley work here is shoddy, but I don't mean to nitpick. The white-clad wonder woman's voice has a different reverb characteristic because it wasn't recorded on the spot in the scene. The keys falling into Bruce's hand don't sound 'correct' either. Those two examples of substandard editing could surely have been remedied back then, but there are also many sound effects in more modern productions which I opine could have been done better.
What I see as timelessly great is the overall genuine artfulness of the production, which I believe is another way of saying what you've said. The decision to build tension with the riveting moment where viewers realize they aren't going to see the woman's face is a hallmark of artistry. Great video, as it captures the essence of the song.
There were lackluster videos back in the '80s, just as there are today. "I'm On Fire" stands apart because it has substance and character, hinting at a dark subject with an element of decorum, or at least basic decency, which 'art' and life seem to glaringly lack today.
There`s also the bouncy picture at the beginning. Looks like Telecine Wobble. Watched the same video somewhere else and it`s not happening there. So VEVO screwed something up during the transfer from the film reels. Or somebody else did and VEVO just uploaded it for promotional purposes.

Josh Popichak Meanwhile 30 years from now, people will look back in awe at the music video for Anaconda. 😂
I respect Springsteen's lack of vanity. Most musicians try so hard to look so damn sexy, cool or god-like in all their videos. He's always a mechanic covered in grease or a lonely man in a pub. It makes him feel so human.
Because he's the BOSS.
a lot of those guys were scripted and did it for the fame in the 80´s but bruce does it for the music and a lot of them had big egos to bruce doesnt have that nothing wrong with a ego though ! just dont be a dick !

A Pure Genius Masterpiece!!!!!! Thanks Boss!!!!!!!!
I remember back to when those PMRC people were criticizing these lyrics. They were saying it was promoting stalking and violence, which was total BS. To me, the music is about loneliness and the walls we erect between us that perpetuates it. Also, the video could be about happiness. She lives a privileged life with lots of wealth, but are you happy? The song says it all. He was expressing how he felt, not suggesting any specific action. Absolute masterpiece of a song.

It's so refreshing to see even though he "clearly"want her, chica pero, said "No." Put the keys is her shiny gold sparklie mailbox, smirk a lil' then he walks away so 'cool, sexxxi" and as only Bruce can do."Great video. Never tired of song or video, even if Johnny Cash did it (during his time RIP)just as good. Love this entire video, so realistic.adios.

I love it too❤

Im soooooo sorry u dont understand this song for the genius masterpiece that's as is
That smile at 3:02...He plays the game, too.
Keep the fire burning, baby. She'll come again in his work shop, and ask for Bruce... personally. He smiles to that, I think.
And we'll play the video again and again... So, who's the daddy now?
That smile was "I can walk away, you don't have me...I have you".
Umm hmm

The howling sound he makes at the end perfectly captures lying awake in bed at 2.30 am on a sweltering summer’s night, not being able to sleep because you can’t stop thinking about that person you want to be with so badly, but you know deep down that you can never have them.
Now I can`t sleep even more, ..... 😞 😞 😞 😞 .....
well said good sir
Pathetic simp song. The rich womans skin crawls at the thought of 1980's bruce.
Very well said. I’m there now
Wow, you expressed so perfectly how feel the ones that lost the love they dreamed about, who will never come back...
2024 and I’m still here ❤
I was born in 1980 and this song gives me a nostalgic feeling of things that never actually happened.
Heard this song for the first time ever yesterday, and have become absolutely obsessed with it. Truly can't take it off of repeat! It's so subtle, but instantly draws you in and makes you want more by the time it's over. A masterpiece.
Welcome to the "I love this song" club. ❤ I have loved this for a long time, enjoy
It's so haunting & beautiful
I heard it for the first time yesterday, in Orange is the new black tv series, and I was hooked....I have been playing it since yesterday.
Yup Ik that feeling. it's now my most played song on Spotify
welcome to the club!
When you meet someone,
that lights up your heart,
you fill yourself with desire,
and you start to shine brighter.
That's the time you're on fire.
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Was 14 when this song came out. He came to Dallas, on his 1986 tour, and played at the Cotton Bowl. Hottest tickets in town, so those who didn’t have tix had to listen from outside the concert, atop their cars, enjoying the beautiful night. School had just started and the weather was barely cooling down a tad bit. When he performed this song, it was the first time I took notice of the neon colored Nations Bank building, that had just been completed, and how beautiful it made the Dallas skyline look. When this video came out, I was just as much in awe of how much was said with so few words.
Love this track. My friend Pauline loved The Boss...thinking of her❤
Never cared for Springsteen as a child, but as a man, this song beautiful.
Amen
@@TheRuddster95 He's an acquired taste for sure.
Agreed
Yikes 😬 yu listening to the lyrics bro?
I'm the same way. I never really cared for him when I was young, but now I really appreciate a lot of his work, especially this song
I’d give anything to have the 80’s back. Simpler times
Same.

One of my favorite songs. It's hard to believe I've been listening to this for 39 years.
Căruciorul fără adăpost nu al meu sau despre care știe cineva, iar conducerea îl va vedea și îl va transporta la timp mai devreme, cu atât mai bine
Thanks dad. For being on fire
2 minutes of pure musical beauty...this song should be 5 minutes longer,i love it
It wouldn't be as great if it were any longer.
See, that's the absolute artistic perfection of it -- it leaves us yearning for more, just like...
Well, you know.
@@smartalek180 i agree..... it s pure magic..that would be like a country song, but it has a night vibe, exactly like the scenes where bruce drives the car....this is perfection, you re right
If you've ever wanted someone you couldn't have, this song will speak to you. I will never forget this married man. We knew we were on fire and it was not possible, never said a word about it, never touched, but we knew... I moved to a different city... years later he wrote to me that he was divorced and had dreamt about me so many nights. I was married and pregnant with my first child. Maybe we'll meet again in another life.
WOW! What a story...
Damn. I wish you didn't get married and pregnant lol.
@catlady Damn. Sorry to hear that. Some things are simply out of our hands and there's nothing we can do about that. I just wish she was out of my head for good, though. I regret even meeting her.
I had 1 like that. I married another woman TWICE and then after that was over, we finally got together. We've been married for 32 years now.

I'll dedicate this to a memory…
I'm only just now discovering this song, 1/5/24. Can't get enough of it especially the way he sings the Ohh-ooh parts. This feeling of America when it was at it's finest decade, big dreams running wild, success in the air, simplicity, living and loving, the girl that got away... all of that rings heavy with the oohhs
Yep, that's Bruce!
Same! I just heard this song by John Mayer on his battle studies album. I didn’t know it was a cover
@@ANBskinstudio I'll have to listen to that
U2 with their 80s songs give that same exact vibe for me. Free and hopeful America and long, beautiful stretches of road in between towns that we could drive forever on, feel the open air and listen to the hum of the tires...
I'm 55 years old and I just discovered a love for Mr. Springsteen's music 🎶❤
Welcome to the club!! He’s awesome! Been listening to him for years!

I think that the feeling that some people feel when listening to this song comes from the fact that the song has some reminiscence of the nostalgia that hurts the most, the one of what could have been, but never was. And in this case it was "complicated" for something to happen, it was better to leave the key and go and think what could have happened. I think the song brings us something of the perfume of our own youth and what we could have done and everything that happened, that's why a knot forms in our stomach, because we realize the finitude of our own life.
The song has something of the sadness of Tango.
Alejandro, from Uruguay.
Nice man! Have a good day
Well said.
I so agree with you. I can lay back close my eyes turn volume up, then, like magic im there again. I believe that music has the ability to transcend any situation and culture.
so many blessings to you

This song brings back memories till this day I still love her even after we broke up
Hey Bruce, everytime you get to the freight train lyrics, I'm haunted by the memory of my brother singing it in the 80's. I can almost hear him singing it. I miss him.

I once sang it in a bar. Two girls gave up their numbers 😂
Not this time. In this particular case the song is still relevant. The world sucks though
We don't look for repetitive spam, but here you are
This song could be about the woman or the car. Either way, this is the shortest song ever to tell a long story. So much is packed into this and emotions it stirs makes you want someone to feel this way about.
The new film "Pig" with Nicholas Cage brought me here. I've never really heard this song before but my girlfriend immediately recognized it when it played at the very end of the movie. Beautiful song, beautiful movie.
Same but before the movie I heard it from Johnny cash oddly enough xD
Same, the staves did a great job covering the song. Very raw

about five years ago i put “visit a bruce springsteen concert with dad” on my mental bucket list and have been holding on this wish he would come to europe again
a year ago someone wrote on twitter the tickets to the tour are for sale from now on
got excited and called dad he was in a pub with his friends and didn’t pick up the phone for about two hours (let me say those were probably the two longest hours of my life man)
for the past year, this was one of the things that kept me going whenever a bad day occurred my little private meaning
in 18 days we are visiting the vienna concert
seems quite unreal i must say

I'm on Fire Duo by Johnny Cash Bruce th-cam.com/video/KMV_Low49AQ/w-d-xo.html
hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
Certainly an incredible song, not sure this would even rank in the top 10,000 music video of all time though. It’s basically just a dude driving around.
Wow, are you related to Hall & Oates?
A man who worked with me, played this song one night when we were alone. I was in a relationship at the time. When he put it in the recorder and turned it up, I glanced over and we locked eyes. Six months later I married him. 31 years now. And he's still on fire.

This song is sentimental to me. It makes me think of my uncle Allen who I love so much... He use to be a drummer and singer and he would sing this song ... I've always loved this
She was 19 and out of my league, and she had a boyfriend. I knew her for 3 weeks thanks to our mutual friends. We never talked to much but we would always give each other silly looks...
There was a students' party of a kind...
I was 22 and pretty shy but managed to have a nice conversation with her that night. I didn't expect anything to happen... Later that night she asked me to escort her to her dorm not far away. We were in her room, and this was one of the songs she had on her mp3 CD.
We did not kiss or anything. She called me tomorrow to tell me she broke up with her boyfriend....
I was surprised and my ego was high as the sky, I did not expect that.
We were crazy for each other for five months and then she broke up when she had to return to her hometown.
19 years later, a year ago, I see her with her daughter (probably 6), I was with my son (9) and she gave me that same silly smile and we said not a word to each other.
