I was 16, and had just dropped my first girlfriend off at home. To put it bluntly, I wanted her in a bad way. While driving home that summer night with the windows down, this song came on the radio. It was the first time a song read my soul. Now, I'm almost 50, and that girlfriend is my wife. This song takes me back to that night, with that same feeling every time I hear it.

My late fiance would sing this to me almost every day he passed on Aug 18th 2020. My sister and I went to the graveside last fall and I was telling him how much I missed him singing that song to me. i watched this and was just thinking how genuine he was talking to the woman, not just dry delivery, but speaking under his breath saying goodbye, knowing its just pointless anyway, kinda stumbling through a word here and there, like real, a real reaction.

Like it was yesterday…, I had just left Army boot camp heading for duty in Germany when this album came out. Never more proud to be an American than hearing this song playing outside Frankfurt airport in summer 1984. I’m still on fire!
I was about 3 weeks away from finishing the 9th grade when this was released. My mom and stepdad were WAY bigger Springsteen fans than myself. I did however like several off Born in the 🇺🇸.
I remember that in 84 I didn't have money even to buy this record... hard times. In 2014, I met Bruce in South Africa and he was very kind - I cried at the hotel later. Thanks for everything, Bruce. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.
@@robertklebe9236 I don't know if this was supposed to be a joke, but Bruce definitely has a different view of masculinity than you have. It is perfectly okay to cry.
I' m 51 now, with 16 and 14 year old children and in a 22 year relationship - but within one second of this song (my favourite Bruce song) I can be instantly transported back to 1987, being 16 and going through the bitter-sweet pain of my first love. Timeless song !
The irony of spending so many nights driving around listening to this song wanting to be anywhere but my hometown, only to end up moving away and listening to it on repeat whenever I’m homesick.
Yeah it's horrible, worse even still though is wanting someone so badly and almost getting them and messing it up for yourself. Almost a year now and I'm still having dreams about her not wanting to know me.

In my opinion Bruce Springsteen has a unique, & rare singing voice which can capture the simple mundane moments of human life & turn them into nostalgic human memories, it is a gift from God!
That gruffness and raspiness was common in the 70s and 80s. Singers had to sing live in small venues for many years before they could make it big. and their voices got seasoned. Not the case anymore.
Bruce wasn't going to let her ruin three lives, no matter how much he wanted her too. Be like Bruce and ignore your heart when you feel something for someone who you know is unobtainable. The heartache will suck, but the damage you'll do listening to it is inconceivable.
he also knew he could never mean to her what she meant to him, and he had more dignity than to be her toyboy for a summer. What we want isn't always the best for all involved..
This song is still the most passionate song ever. Nothing compares. And the ending of the video is a revelation. That he is so full of longing he is happy to go and feel the night air on a long walk home. Also a steamy symbol of a common man yearning for something better and beautiful... a work of art this.
Hey Bruce, everytime you get to the freight train lyrics, I'm haunted by the memory of my brother singing it in the 80's. I can almost hear him singing it. I miss him.
This song is about wanting something you can't have. The song is short, and you want more of it, but can't have it, which is why you love it. The song is not too short, it's just right. If it was any longer, it would kill your desire. Sometimes, wanting something is better than having it. If we had it, we'd just fk it up anyway. You know you would. There are things in this world that are better off without us. i copied and pasted this comment from another im on fire vid. its so true
On another I'm on Fire video, I saw a guy say this is a "feel good tune." WTF?!?! One of my all time favorites, but I can't listen without a glass of whiskey and a cigarette.
I haven't seen this video in almost 30 years and I'm 40 lol. Bruce is not only a great looking man, but his voice, his demeanor, and pure sentiment in his work shows greatly in this video. An American legend!
This was the first song I heard when I could hear. Had hearing aids my whole life. Remembering I was visiting my dad. Bruce has been my favorite and number one rock icon, still. This song is to me wife which I’ve known since 3rd grade.
If you've ever wanted someone you couldn't have, this song will speak to you. I will never forget this married man. We knew we were on fire and it was not possible, never said a word about it, never touched, but we knew... I moved to a different city... years later he wrote to me that he was divorced and had dreamt about me so many nights. I was married and pregnant with my first child. Maybe we'll meet again in another life.

I've loved Bruce since the 1st moment I heard him on air. This was 1976 just prior to "Born To Run" dropping. I had chills. I knew he'd be a star. I've seen him in concert a few times & he never disappoints. No one can WAIL like he can. Talk about "taking a knife edgy & dull & cutting a 6" valley through the middle of my skull." Whoa. 😶

She was 19 and out of my league, and she had a boyfriend. I knew her for 3 weeks thanks to our mutual friends. We never talked to much but we would always give each other silly looks... There was a students' party of a kind... I was 22 and pretty shy but managed to have a nice conversation with her that night. I didn't expect anything to happen... Later that night she asked me to escort her to her dorm not far away. We were in her room, and this was one of the songs she had on her mp3 CD. We did not kiss or anything. She called me tomorrow to tell me she broke up with her boyfriend.... I was surprised and my ego was high as the sky, I did not expect that. We were crazy for each other for five months and then she broke up when she had to return to her hometown. 19 years later, a year ago, I see her with her daughter (probably 6), I was with my son (9) and she gave me that same silly smile and we said not a word to each other.

This song makes me start crying. It gives me this nostalgic, wistful, sad, aching feeling. Like a 6 inch knife in the middle of your chest and skull. It feels like you’re floating the moment it starts. There’s this aching feeling in your heart because you know everything you’re imagining will never happen. It’s about wanting something you can’t have, longing for something you just can’t reach. It captures yearning, desire, frustration, and deep sadness so well. I could listen to this song for hours. And Bruce Springsteen is so cute in this video.
The whole feeling of the video and the song is exactly how I feel in the situation. Being so close yet so distant, the longing, the sleepless nights because they're the only thing on your mind
Why do pedos long for the innocent days that people did not recognise them as pedos? This song is about a pedo stalking a little girl, checking that her father is not around to unleash his great desire on the little girl.
That smile at 3:02...He plays the game, too. Keep the fire burning, baby. She'll come again in his work shop, and ask for Bruce... personally. He smiles to that, I think. And we'll play the video again and again... So, who's the daddy now?

I listen to this on loop when I'm resting my head on the shoulders of sheer loneliness and slumping under a myriad of memories. Bruce has a way with time. He never gets old with his art of living through the old.
so, i grew up in the 80's, my childhood was 79-97. My music was was mainly Cure/Joy Division. I was thinking about this song today, and how i wouldnt dare tell my friends i like springstein. i figure 25-30 years later i can like it, playing through my head everyonce and a while for that long. I sit down with an acoustic guitar today, to finally play this, with in two tries i had it down, beautiful muted rhythm and vocals. right away, its a natural, cool song. wife loved it. if you play an instrument, play this for youre girl tonight, you have no idea how it pays off. if i did this decades ago, would have lost virginity that much sooner. cheers.
Same for me. Bauhaus, Cure, Joy Divison, Gang of Four, DNA, etc.. But I love this song. It's very romantic. And I love him too. As a man and as a musician. Respect for Bruce Springsteen. One of the best .. Ever
That's a long ass childhood lol. If you were born in 1979, then it's 82-91 or so... about age 3-12. Teenagers are kids but when I hear the word childhood, I think of believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny and stuff.
And it does seem like all genres of music from back then flow together more these days, it can ALL get lumped into just being called "80s music" now. I mean everyone who grew up then is in their 40s, so of course it's not gonna be as cliquey and genre specific as when the fans were 14. Plus people's tastes also can mature with age. There's 80s metalheads who now admit they like Madonna and stuff.
This one is one of my favorite songs of BS. Apart of the positive vibes many of his songs send, the lyrics of his songs often reflect real life situations. It took me a while to understand it as a non native english speaker :) And just read that he wrote this song literally in only two minutes. Amazing.
The new film "Pig" with Nicholas Cage brought me here. I've never really heard this song before but my girlfriend immediately recognized it when it played at the very end of the movie. Beautiful song, beautiful movie.
Aye, Pig movie brought me here too, knew the song from my past, sung the chorus into google hey presto. Technology eh... 6% match. Pig was a nice movie too ;)
This video had great production values for the era in which it was produced. It doesn't really look dated 30-plus years later. I wish music videos were still like this...
Yes and no, in my opinion. ; ] The crappy warble when the song begins is just as if you're listening to this on a tape deck in a car back in the '80s. However, in all fairness, I'm sure that wasn't in the original release. VEVO left awful production blunders in other videos, too. Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" comes to mind, with a squelch at its 3:57 mark -- right in the middle of the song's arguably best part, which is, again arguably, one of the nicest guitar solos of the '80s. The foley work here is shoddy, but I don't mean to nitpick. The white-clad wonder woman's voice has a different reverb characteristic because it wasn't recorded on the spot in the scene. The keys falling into Bruce's hand don't sound 'correct' either. Those two examples of substandard editing could surely have been remedied back then, but there are also many sound effects in more modern productions which I opine could have been done better. What I see as timelessly great is the overall genuine artfulness of the production, which I believe is another way of saying what you've said. The decision to build tension with the riveting moment where viewers realize they aren't going to see the woman's face is a hallmark of artistry. Great video, as it captures the essence of the song. There were lackluster videos back in the '80s, just as there are today. "I'm On Fire" stands apart because it has substance and character, hinting at a dark subject with an element of decorum, or at least basic decency, which 'art' and life seem to glaringly lack today.
There`s also the bouncy picture at the beginning. Looks like Telecine Wobble. Watched the same video somewhere else and it`s not happening there. So VEVO screwed something up during the transfer from the film reels. Or somebody else did and VEVO just uploaded it for promotional purposes.
The metaphor of him driving her car, living what she does every day...manifesting what it would be like to be with her only to not ring her doorbell and to go on without interrupting her life. This is one of the best music videos ever filmed, accompanied by one of the best songs ever written.
The howling sound he makes at the end perfectly captures lying awake in bed at 2.30 am on a sweltering summer’s night, not being able to sleep because you can’t stop thinking about that person you want to be with so badly, but you know deep down that you can never have them.
Masterpiece. It's short but it really hits the soul. Makes you want more but you know you can't have it. Just like the lyrics say. For me, it reminds of a great friend of mine who passed away, loved his music. This song is short but makes a big impact and then it's over...Just like life

1:12 -2:43 is a civil war between his heart and his brain. The heart wants her and guides his drive to her house, but if you watch close enough you see the brain waking up and having a realization the amount of pain he's going to cause if he goes through with listening to his heart. In the end brain wins out Bruce wakes away with a smile. The right thing is rarely the easy thing to do.

I think that the feeling that some people feel when listening to this song comes from the fact that the song has some reminiscence of the nostalgia that hurts the most, the one of what could have been, but never was. And in this case it was "complicated" for something to happen, it was better to leave the key and go and think what could have happened. I think the song brings us something of the perfume of our own youth and what we could have done and everything that happened, that's why a knot forms in our stomach, because we realize the finitude of our own life. The song has something of the sadness of Tango. Alejandro, from Uruguay.

Fain, nossa colega gringa ali em cima, disse que essa musica é machista. Mas não só... a belezinha da musica também faz uma alusão a pedofilia, pelo menos é o que se entende quando ele diz "Hey little girl is you dady home? Did he go and leave you all alone? I got a bad desire, I'm on fire" ele literalmente diz "Ei pequena menina, seu papai (no sentigo de sugar dady, que é cara mais velho, rico que fica com mulheres mais novas) esta em casa? Ele foi embora e a deixou sozinha? Eu tenho um desejo mau/ruim/, estou em chamas/excitado" querendo dizer que esta sexualmente atraido por essa pequena menina!
Acho que da pra sacar a problemática da letra da música...

My favorite Bruce Springsteen song, by far, it seems like this song lasts only 30 seconds every time I hear it. It never gets old. Ever.
I wish he'd remake this song an make it longer
I totally agreed with you. I’m 44 and every time I hear it it takes me back to my childhood. Loved the song then and still do.

i watched this and was just thinking how genuine he was talking to the woman, not just dry delivery, but speaking under his breath saying goodbye, knowing its just pointless anyway, kinda stumbling through a word here and there, like real, a real reaction.
Bruce has been a lifelong sufferer from depression. He spends long recovery periods between albums. He retreats from the world for his own sanity.
Of course he does, that's why they call him The Boss!!

Like it was yesterday…, I had just left Army boot camp heading for duty in Germany when this album came out. Never more proud to be an American than hearing this song playing outside Frankfurt airport in summer 1984. I’m still on fire!
What did you do in Germany other than booze and beautiful German chicks? It's a criminal empire the US. You should be ashamed.
I was about 3 weeks away from finishing the 9th grade when this was released. My mom and stepdad were WAY bigger Springsteen fans than myself. I did however like several off Born in the 🇺🇸.
And he still wants me

I remember that in 84 I didn't have money even to buy this record... hard times. In 2014, I met Bruce in South Africa and he was very kind - I cried at the hotel later. Thanks for everything, Bruce. Greetings from São Paulo, Brazil.

that's really good advice....
Saved himself a lot of heartache. Because if he/she would be willing to cheat WITH you, chances are great he/she would be willing to cheat ON you.

This song is about wanting something you can't have. The song is short, and you want more of it, but can't have it, which is why you love it. The song is not too short, it's just right.

Back in the 80's watching this video as a kid, I always wondered how Bruce Springsteen was going to get back home at the end of this video.
I know, me too. According to her, they live way up in the hills so Bruce is a long way from home. Either he will be doing a lot of walking and bus rides (if the buses are still running) or finding a pay phone and calling up a cab, but paying a grip in the process.
I still wonder. Does he take a bus? Call a taxi? How does he get home???

I was thinking about this song today, and how i wouldnt dare tell my friends i like springstein. i figure 25-30 years later i can like it, playing through my head everyonce and a while for that long.

This video had great production values for the era in which it was produced. It doesn't really look dated 30-plus years later. I wish music videos were still like this...
I was just thinking the same thing

This is one of the best songs ever. Short, expressive and cutting to the point real fast.
Masterpiece. It's short but it really hits the soul. Makes you want more but you know you can't have it. Just like the lyrics say. For me, it reminds of a great friend of mine who passed away, loved his music. This song is short but makes a big impact and then it's over...Just like life
Well said 🤍
so sad, soo sad😢
You know the song is about sex....right?
I just wrote your first word "masterpiece" scrolled down and saw your comment. It is a masterpiece.
One of my dads favorites, lost him to cancer may, 3rd 2022. Man, I miss him, we are both mechanics! Love you dad.
Sending you lots of love
Sorry for the loss, brother.
No, man. Nobody ever truly dies because your dad lives on through you, and if you start a family one day, you'll pass his heart and soul down to your babies.
So sorry.
Sounds like a legend
Bruce Springsteen is truly poetic.
Forever will be one of the best love songs for the one you want but can't have.
Who else listens to this song about 15 times in a row because it's too short?
Me, Leah. Me. This song is great (in fact, his only song that I like); but it's about 4 minutes too short. =(
Yep
Me
Here ya go Leah; the ol' "What If...." speech from Out of Sight. Only fell victim to this once or twice, myself!

Yeah someone should hit it with Fruityloops and remix it into an 8 minute version. Not really country but it does have a cowboyish beat to it with that little guitar riff.
Loved listening to this song with my dad in his HVAC service van for years and when my parents were divorced I used to sleep on an old army cot with a flannel shirt for a pillow, I miss my dad. Passed in 2011🥺
very sorry for your loss and pray you are well
He love's you too.
My condolences brother I love you
rest in peace to your father
I'm a HVAC service tech and I wear flannel , my dad was my best friend , he passed in 2012 ...hes probably hanging out with your dad !
My dad passed away last November and he loved this song so everytime I listen to it, it makes me think of him

Me too! Lost my dad 2 yrs ago, this song and Bobby Jean bring the best memories back for me. Perfect song!
This came out the year I was born. I've always loved this song. I don't know why I'm just now seeing the video but the video makes it that much more magical and addicting!
I think this is my fav Bruce song. It is brilliant.
Bruce was a 35 year old man asking if a little girls dad was home because he has a bad desire.
This is Bruce Springsteen! This video should have 1 billion views ❤
Goosebumps every time I listen to this song. You can feel the lust and the desire. And yet so simple. Awesome
Yes yes yes
Nothing like a blue denim jeans, boots(regular ones, or timz(construction type timz on) jacket, or heck, even sweats on, BLUE COLLAR for me all the way for decades.) Love this song.
@@CassieDylan-xk6jk Hola chica, hi Cassie. From the inception of him layin'down, flagrantly "thinkin' of her" to walking to his very nice cool car, to driving(so real)entire video. ALBEIT short, the video, it's so beautifully done. "House up on the hill suburbia feel to it all."Perfect." # 3:03. look good there, just smirk a lil and walks away.
I personally love this song/video always will. Still play it at times. It's so refreshing to see even though he "clearly"want her, chica pero, said "No." Put the keys is her shiny gold sparklie mailbox, smirk a lil' then he walks away so 'cool, sexxxi" and as only Bruce can do."Great video. Never tired of song or video, even if Johnny Cash did it (during his time RIP)just as good. Love this entire video, so realistic.adios.

Maybe you should listen to this song when it's 95 degrees outside.
Hermano bruce , sabes cuánto te admiro y te respeto ? Así de grande ,,gracias muchas gracias por darnos momentos hermosos con tu música ,,❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
Born in the USA was released almost 40 years ago and this song still gives me goosebumps! My favorite song of the album. Love it!
I love it too❤
Saw the perfect analogy of why this song is short - like the lyrics, and video, it's to leave you wanting more. You want it to last longer, but you can't always get what you want.
Hello 👋 Dear. Nice to respond to his comment here on Bruce Springteen's page here on TH-cam. I'm also a huge fan to be honest. How are you ? Mind if we talk in private?
This song reminds me of the first time I saw the sexiest man I ever saw playing pool hitting all the coolest shoots..cowboy boots tan body and we just celebrated our 25yr..whoo whoo whoo I'm on 🔥.

As a working-class man, this song resonates with me. Love crosses all boundaries. I've been there.
Why is this song so powerful in many ways?! Gosh it still gives me a feeling I'll never forget. It's always been a special song in my heart ❤️
Jake, one of the best comments so far, and I can relate.
I feel the same way about it ❣️
My dad was fan of bruce springteen but he passed away when i was 7 years old. But when i play this song its feel like he is with me all the time Peace / Sweden
I’m 15 and a HUGE Bruce fan, but these comments damn I cried reading them this is just pure bitter sweat love
I'm 16 and i feel what you mean
I think that the feeling that some people feel when listening to this song comes from the fact that the song has some reminiscence of the nostalgia that hurts the most, the one of what could have been, but never was. And in this case it was "complicated" for something to happen, it was better to leave the key and go and think what could have happened. I think the song brings us something of the perfume of our own youth and what we could have done and everything that happened, that's why a knot forms in our stomach, because we realize the finitude of our own life.
The song has something of the sadness of Tango.
Alejandro, from Uruguay.
Nice man! Have a good day
Well said.
I so agree with you. I can lay back close my eyes turn volume up, then, like magic im there again. I believe that music has the ability to transcend any situation and culture.

hello, how are you doing it is nice meeting you here.
Certainly an incredible song, not sure this would even rank in the top 10,000 music video of all time though. It’s basically just a dude driving around.
Wow, are you related to Hall & Oates?
My dad used to sing this song when I couldn't sleep as a kid, so now every time I hear it, I feel calm and relaxed.
Same.... the EXACT same here as well... Now my dad has been gone for 20 years. he passed away suddenly when i was 17. When I hear it, it makes me remember him and helps me be calm as well
Same here ,a very peaceful ,soothing sound. One of his best.
@@Sindell81 thats hear Heartwrenchingly sad. I'm sorry you lost him. But what a wonderful memory of him
@@cranberriesgirlhype8292 Thank you Cranberries,
@@cranberriesgirlhype8292 thank you... thanksgiving was his favorite holiday...Not having him kills me. it hurts because i said some of the worst, horrific things to be before he died. I never got the chance to say im sorry and that i love him. That I didnt mean any of it. oh the anniversary of his passing, i was diagnosed with leukemia. I tried to walk outta the hospital and told the drs "i will deal with it later" and one said flat out "you are a walking corpse... i have NO idea how you are still even ALIVE, let alone walking and talking, you leave this hospital and you wont live to see monday.... maybe tuesday..." So i stayed,, I was just at the ER over a what i thought was a spider bite that wouldnt go away... got bigger and bigger and then my whoile stomach was a bruise with lumps. The lumps were tumors that surfaced because my cancer cells waaayyy too high. I started the streatment at the ER and was there over a week taking these strong chemo pill like things to get my body somewhat better. My spleen was 6 times its normal size, liver was at 7X. I should have been dead and i wanted to give up but then this song started playing out of the blue. Not sure where.... thats when i decided :"my dad was strong..I can be too" then began the extremely high dosages there. I will be on these treatments for the rest of my life, so when i start feeling back i look this song up to head my dad's voice in my head letting me know everything will be okay
This song brings back memories till this day I still love her even after we broke up
that 2 minute song that should have been 5

I think that I read somewhere that Bruce recorded this last minute because he still had space on the album or something like that. Imagine if this wasn't on Born in the USA and never released
