  • One of the most tenacious business communities in India is of the Sindhis…
Uprooted by the partition, they had to leave Pakistan for India - where they came as refugees in the thousands, and set up a camp in Ulhasnagar near Mumbai.
They built their wealth by first not trying to dwell too much on the sorrows and pain of the partition, and trying to recover economically through their business acumen.
For years after independence, Indian shores were closed to foreign goods and people yearned for imported products.
Sindhis started making jeans, bags, shampoos - branding them as international and printing “Made in USA”…
Where they weren’t technically lying - because USA stood for the Ulhasnagar Sindhi Association.
With access to sea from Mumbai, they traveled to countries like Malta, the Gibraltar, Africa and even South America at every trade opportunity they found to make a quick buck.
In fact, Sindhis are among the most well globally spread out business communities from India.
Originally bankers and moneylenders in Pakistan, they understood money.
As per a popular tale, when in Bombay, they bought sugar for Rs 1 per kilo, and sold it for 99 paise per kilo…
Thus selling in huge quantities, making a loss of 1 paise per kilo…
Only to sell the empty packaging material received from sugar factories for 5 paise a piece, thus overall turning a profit of 4%
There are so many business communities in our country that it’s inspiring.
The ones like the Gujaratis teach us how important it is to work with a community of trusted members from one’s family so that everyone grows together …
And the ones like the Sindhis - teach us how one shouldn’t dwell on adversities, and be willing to travel to any part of the world and not be limited by artificial beliefs that stop us from pursuing money.

I’m reading a book called The Sindhis by Mark Anthony Falzon.
It reads like a PhD thesis, so not the most modern way of storytelling… but hardcore Sindhis may want to get one just to understand their history.
