Gone With the Wind boils down to a story about a spoiled Southern girl's hopeless love for a married man. Producer David O. Selznick managed to expand this concept, and Margaret Mitchell's best-selling novel, into nearly four hours' worth of screen time, on a then-astronomical 3.7-million-dollar budget, creating what would become one of the most beloved movies of all time. Gone With the Wind opens in April of 1861, at the palatial Southern estate of Tara, where Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) hears that her casual beau Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) plans to marry "mealy mouthed" Melanie Hamilton (Olivia de Havilland). Despite warnings from her father (Thomas Mitchell) and her faithful servant Mammy (Hattie McDaniel), Scarlett intends to throw herself at Ashley at an upcoming barbecue at Twelve Oaks. Alone with Ashley, she goes into a fit of histrionics, all of which is witnessed by roguish Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), the black sheep of a wealthy Charleston family, who is instantly fascinated by the feisty, thoroughly self-centered Scarlett: "We're bad lots, both of us." The movie's famous action continues from the burning of Atlanta (actually the destruction of a huge wall left over from King Kong) through the now-classic closing line, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." Holding its own against stiff competition (many consider 1939 to be the greatest year of the classical Hollywood studios), Gone With the Wind won ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), and Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, the first African-American to win an Oscar). The film grossed nearly 192 million dollars, assuring that, just as he predicted, Selznick's epitaph would be "The Man Who Made Gone With the Wind."

The most interesting relationship in the whole book isn't the relationship between Scarlett and Rhett, or Scarlett and Ashley, but Scarlett and Melanie.
Yes, they were great parallels together. They are completely different and fill each other. Scarlett is a brain, while Melanie is a heart. Melanie always respected her bravery, and Scarlett is the first and almost only reason why Melanie and her son is alive. Melanie has become stronger thanks to love toward Scarlett. When she was only female in the new Atlanta who supported Scarlett, she showed her strength and love. Scarlett also realized that even if she loses everything, Melanie will stay with her. It might seem as a toxic frienship, but I do not think so. It was very emotional moment when Scarlett, sick and dying, somehow remembered herself rescuing Melanie and her baby when the city was bombarded. And at the end of the book Scarlett clearly realizes that she loves Melanie, that was great. I also liked the relationships between Mommy and Scarlett, Scarlett and soldier from who lived in Tara(I cant remember his name). Off topic, but when I think about Rhet in deep, he was such a bad person, the money he got probably was needed by many innocent lives and he only started act kind and good was after the birth of her daughter. Maybe he is past influenced him, but I do not wanted him be with Scarlett.
If you go to the Margaret Mitchell museum in Atlanta, they make it very clear that Margaret Mitchell believed Melanie was the heroine of the novel because she endured every horror Scarlett did and kept her honor and dignity.

The reason Scarlett fell so deeply in love with Ashley is because he exuded all the grace and gentleness that she lacked in herself. She grew to love Rhett, but really he was like her mirror image... a dominant personality, and nothing that she yearned for since she was the same type of person. We always yearn for what we think is missing in ourselves. Ashley adored Scarlett but he could never reciprocate because she just wasn't a safe bet for marriage... Melanie was stability.
Agree, except I always thought that Scarlett fell in love with the image or the idea of Ashley and not him as a man. It's really clear in the book that she is in love with an illusion and not the reality, though it does come through in the movie, too, especially upon subsequent viewings.

Also, there's one thing in the book the movie didn't touch on. When Ellen O'Hara is sick and delirious before she dies she calls out for "Phillippe", a cousin she had been desperately in love with even after she married Gerald.. Scarlett of course was clueless what Ellen was raving about, but Mammy knew and she hushed everyone up. This kind of hinted about there being a parallel between Ellen and Scarlett and their obsessive love for the wrong man. The book is full of subtleties and if you only saw the movie you're missing out.

Rhett wasn't innocent but at least he's honest about his feelings and doesn't hide who he is. He isn't ashamed about the fact he isn't a gentleman, and is even proud of the fact he doesn't have to be surrounded by snobs.. :)

She was a kid at the beginning of the story , only 16 and he was 35 so of course she was silly and wasn't sure about her feelings. He was much older and so the wiser. I think they were both too much alike, two very dominant people and she loved Ashley for he was everything she wasn't. Had it been modern days they would just date for a couple of weeks and she would dump him but back then marriage was the only option and they were apart for most of the war time so she was living her dream like a teenager would do.

Clark Gable's 1930's movies were awesome. He was already famously known as the King of Hollywood when he pegged the role for Gone With The Wind, but that cemented his place in history. No one will replace him.
I will never forget seeing this for the first time in 1961, when I was 13 years old. I knew it was about Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler, taking place during the Civil War, but that's all I knew. In the novel, Margaret Mitchell foreshadows this moment by describing the scene: "The sofa's high back reared up like some large, sleeping animal." But, I saw the film with my girlfriends before I read the book. When Clark Gable rose up off that sofa, compounding Scarlett's humiliation at Ashley's rejection, we all exclaimed, "Oh no!" aloud in the theater. I'll never forget the shock of that moment. The small Texas town where I saw it is not the same and the theater on the town square is long gone, but that moment will stay with me forever.

Rhett was the perfect man for Miss Scarlett - he had her number.
Even as a child Ashley's wishy washy attitude got on my nerves. He also lives in the past too much. This movie was the first time I saw Leslie Howard and never liked him in any role after it. Of course he was only playing a part, but so many of his roles were wimpy, boring, wishy washy men , ex. Of Human Bondage, or The Petrified Forest. I don't like the macho He man type, but this Ashley guy is so undecided and wimpy. The first time I saw it was on TV, but recently saw an anniversary showing on the big screen at a theater for it's 75th, anniversary and it was interesting to see it that way.
The Crafty Lady Scarlett would have gotten bored with Ashley fast because he was too wimpy for her. She needed an alpha male like Rhett. Poor Leslie Howard was typecast as a weak guy, but in real life, he was the opposite. Howard was a war hero, killed during WWII.
Yeah I read that too. I think he wasn't crazy about the part either, but often back then actors/actresses were under studio contracts that determined what roles they played rather than individual choice.

Alright ! Though I do think she was great as Melanie, as an actress she wants to play more than one role of course.
Vivienne Leigh was the best actress for this movie. She was able to turn her British accent to a perfect southern accent. She was truly gifted.

In those years, Southern Aristocrat boys, after age 8 or 9, were subject to a demanding phonetic education to make them speak like half Brit Aristos, purging all their black slave nanny´s inflections. So Howard´s accent was more on the mark than Gable´s, whose role was of a Plebeian middle class Southerner who should´ve spoken with a heavy southern drawl.

Illustrated English men in the 1700s and 1800s had their own particular way of speaking, didn´t they? That´s was the original model for Southern Aristocrat males, who could not be left to speak like their Black nannies. "Gone With The Wind" is historical accurate on that particular aspect, Scarlet and his sisters speak with a residual (very obvious one) African phonetics, while Ashley is more English. While Melanie being more of an Aristocrat than Scarlet is in the middle.

Everyone who has seen the movie quickly grows fond of Rhett. And everyone who has read the book falls in love with him.
I have always felt that he grew to be better than Scarlett. Fatherhood really changed him, and I think some of his most poignant characterization comes from the scenes after Bonnie’s death, when he’s mourning her with all the lights on. And any scene with he and Melanie also gives me more respect for him.

I love Leslie Howard's performance here. His movements are so elegant and so is the way he talks. He might not be the most suitable actor for this film in terms of youth, but apart from that, his work was perfect in the whole film.

The casting for Scarlett was a long rigorous process, but the casting directors picked the right one at the end. BOY did they pick the right one.
I'm surprised that Gable didn't win an academy award for this performance. Yes this movie won plenty of accolades, but his performance really made this film great, alongside Vivian Leigh.

I KNOW! people don't look at the movie in-depth, they just take the things how they are. i might sound ridiculous, but this movie was showing how terrible the war was, not how good slavery was... the war ruined people's lives... it ruined the slaves' lives, the soldier's lives, and even Scarlett's life.

I believe Scarlett and Rhett are meant for each other, they made a great couple. Sometimes people just do not realize how they are for each other, they keep chasing illusions instead.

I just watched this movie yesterday, after 78 years... Gone with the wind is the umpteenth evidence that old movies are by far better than the recent ones. As for my impression, well, there's nothing much to say, just incredibly beautiful, brilliant plot, brilliant interpreations (Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable simply impressive), brilliant dialogues. The only flaw was Ashley's actor, as somebody commented, his interpretation was boring and his appearance actually unrealistical... I'm not gay, but Ashley can't compete with Rhett, although he seems very elegant and well-educated, I just don't understand how Scarlett could have prefered him to Rhett. Allegedly the book made a better job describing Ashley, the movie did it wrong, but that's okay, this movie is anyway a masterpiece
She was attracted to his dignity and calm demeanor - like her mother's. Something she lacked.
Remember that scarlett was a 16 yr old teenager at the beginning of the book and the movie so her idea of manliness was that of a teenager- ashley was a romantic teen obsession and a fantasy that she remained in love with for years- in contrast rhett is a much more mature relationship involving a patrnership, friendship and eventually love
His first like is awesome, and his last line is awesome. Nice parallel: Clark Gable enters the film like a boss, and eventually exits like a boss!
And he hates playing this role because it is in a "woman's picture"....

Ahha, beautiful Vivien Leigh, the perfect embodiment of Scarlett O'Hara.
Margaret Mitchell practically moulded a living, breathing woman out of clay when she created Scarlett. She's conceited, vain, spiteful, petty and occasionally mind-bogglingly stupid, but I think Scarlett is one of the best female characters ever written. You can really see why someone like Rhett lost his peace of mind to her.
She envisioned Miriam Hopkins in the role.
She's also hard-working as no one else, loyal to a fault (enough to save Melanie's life just because she had promised Ashley) and smart enough to change when circumstances did, so she ends up being the main breadwinner in her family at the ripe age of... twenty? She feeds everyone in her family, taking the toll against her reputation in her quest for money. The family is angry (Suellen with good reason), but they take the money nonetheless.
Scarlett was good. She did great things. Scarlett was had more of her Irish ancestry and saw things more pragmatically. We are seeing the events from what she did and what she really thought... But. How many of us would be as unselfish as she despite our true thoughts??? That is the question of life

Minty she’s not stupid. She’s YOUNG. She’s stupid about relationships, but in the book she pens several businesses. In the book it’s really clear she truly thinks Rhett doesn’t love her.

People on here seem to be really grossed out by the fact that Ashley married his first cousin. Remember, this took place in the 1800s! This was not just a southern thing, it happened all over the United States, as well as Europe and other places, especially among the rich. It was acceptable then, but now times have changed, and in most places, it's culturally unacceptable. You can't judge it by today's standards. It's a historical film; just don't think too much about it and enjoy the movie!
It went on way before that. In egypt they sometimes married their siblings to keep the royal blood as it was said. Pride is a really really ugly thing folks. Some of the kids ended up pretty messed up.
In the book, there is a comment made about how strange the Wilkes are for marrying their cousins so much so I think we're meant to be a little grossed out.
It's not held up as a good thing. The reason Melanie isn't able to have a healthy pregnancy is because she isn't the first Hamilton girl to marry into the Wilkes family. Olivia de Haviland is much more attractive than the book version of Melanie, who is sickly and weak because of past inbreeding.
She was so beautiful, and like grace kelly, her beauty was all NATURAL...unlike the freak show botoxed trout pout silocone injected plastic surgery addicted "stars" we gave to endure today. Vivien Leigh was very beautiful, and she was BORN that way.

Wow, anyone else amazed this came out in 1939? The camera work, color picture, and overall production is so ahead of its time. This looks like it could have come out in the late 60's.
I admire how actor Leslie Howard politely exited the room just like a true gentleman after Scarlet slapped him in the face. You don't see men like that anymore that treat women with respect and honor.

The protagonist is uncompelling and manipulative and the story is trash from a narrative standpoint, nostalgia or not this is quite dull. I don't think any movie should be banned, not even this one, but only the visuals and the acting are great. Writing...not really the best storytelling.

Ashley was right. He and Melanie were perfect for each other. I always thought Ashley was too wimpy for Scarlett! She and Rhett WERE the perfect match...both strong and independent characters. GWTW has been and always will be my favorite film of all time.
Read the book if you haven't! You will love Gone With the Wind even more. It's so much more in depth, even though the movie does a pretty good job of adapting the book.

@@Cheryl_Haydon I have reread that book so many times; I just finished it again. There are so many great characters that never made it into the movie, like Will Benteen, Grandma Fontaine, and Archie. These people are so real to me; I always worried while I read the book about what happended to poor Wade Hampton and to Ella.

I haven't finished the movie yet but I'm confused why everyone is hating on Ashley in this scene. He is 100% correct in everything he said here while Scarlet is a young, unstable tease. I guess a lot of the female viewers just see themselves in Scarlet?
His dignity and good sense made him all the more attractive to Scarlett.
Rhett never played into her hands and called her out on her bull shit and she fell in love with him, why? because he wasn't weak with her.
+Rock N This is a pretty bad example of that. He's a strong, dominant man, but has a softness underneath that Scarlett just doesn't have.
She didn't fall in love with him until about 12 years after this, and at least five years of marriage during which he had suffered from the knowledge of her obsession with another man.
He played masterful, but had a desire to love underneath that he could only display in his love for his daughter, as Scarlett would never love him the same way. When Bonnie died, he was utterly broken and Scarlett's love didn't matter. I don't know how clear it is in the movies, but in the books it's a central theme.

I liked Rhett's ability to not be captivated and suckered by the beauty and status that Scarlett had and he never had any greater value in her eyes than when he walked away cause at that point, he was something she couldn't have.
Scarlet was childish, spoiled and played games and is one of those types of women that if she got what she wanted, the game is over and Rhett showed his power by walking away and that's a man that she would never forget.
These two are perfectly cast... with a clever (& a bit risqué) script... & their screen presence... PERFECTION!!!

Seems like Ashley in the movie is different from the book. I thought he was supposed to be handsome, young and had a draw to him that made Scarlett so crazy for him. This actor is none of those things - in fact twice the age of the actress who played Melanie at the time. Kind of an odd choice to me.
I agree, it was an odd choice. Leslie Howard disliked the character and thought himself too old to play Ashley, however I suppose the role paid highly and the directors were on a schedule.

Yes, the role of Ashley is the only miscasting in GWTW, and I really think it has caused so many people down thru the decades, especially those who haven't read the book, to continue to ask, "Why was she so obsessed with Ashley when she had Rhett?" When I get asked that, I tell them to read the book. Ashley is attractive, dutiful, introspective, he thinks before he acts...he's disciplined in ways Rhett is not, there's much going on behind his eyes, he's an intellectual. To Scarlett he represents the safety and security that was before The War, she doesn't understand him, but she wants to, even though she never will. Ashley is smart enough to recognize they are a bad match, he is bookish and quiet. Ashley knows Scarlett needs more spontaneity and excitement, and that's Rhett. Rhett is even a physical opposite to Ashley, he's dark and swarthy, while Ashley is blonde and a little baby faced. They are both handsome, but there's much more to Scarlett's attraction to Ashley than what so many who have only seen the movie come away with, that she only wants what she can't have...no, it's deeper than that. Read the book!
