    The whole beginning part about physical copies converting to digital/streaming was real nostalgic for me. I remember growing up during the limewire days and pirating music in the late 2000s early 2010s

      No it wouldn’t. His father was a low level LOCAL (meaning in Chicago only) campaign manager. People love overstating his importance in the Obama campaign. There are literally thousands of local campaign managers/staff for every single presidential candidate-Chance’s father was just one of them

    • @ddgs07
      @ddgs07 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      HarunHarun Chance wasn’t even living at home during that time so his parents’ income would’ve have no impact on Acid Rap. They were also firmly middle class & didn’t need their teenage son to financially provide for them even though he (just like his idol Kanye) like to pretend like they grew up struggling.
      He was spending months on tour, extended stays in LA, & living with his now wife-then gf before & during the recording of Acid Rap.
      After he went on tour with Childish Gambino he never lived in his parents’ house again. He has said this himself in interviews & songs-he even named a song ‘65th & Ingleside’ about where he lived w/ his then gf after he came back from his 1st “big” tour, but before Acid Rap came out

    With the current pandemic, streaming seems to be one of the only ways for artists to get their bag (along with merch). People have the time to listen, but maybe not the money to purchase an album or clothing.

    • @tannermurray420
      @tannermurray420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      itzrayyo while that is tru, the money is made in merch. In bulk, it costs a rapper $2.50 to make a t shirt they sell for $30. All other costs considered, its about $5 cost for $25 profit. At $.005 per stream, which is generous, it would take 5000 plays for an artist to make that same $25 off a fan. I dont think there is any artist ive streamed 5,000 plays over all their work. So if u drop a new merch line every year when u drop an album and ur diehard fans buy that, u make way more. Thats why guys like danny duncan on yt gets millions of views but doesnt even monetize all his videos. Hes making bank off of his virginity rocks merch and live shows, again where the artist probably takes between 20-50 percent of the cost of the ticket

      Brennden Miller Brennden Miller Here’s my opinion. I’ve been a Chance fan since Acid rap and went back to listen to 10 Days a couple years ago. I personally don’t think Chance has one bad feature verse and am a fan of his singles like the writer and tap dance. I also enjoyed his collab album Surf, but some songs just didn’t really sound like Chance, as he was starting to take on a more mainstream radio hit sound. I think Chance began feeling different in the eyes of his fans eyes when he started transitioning into more gospel type music. His verse on Ultralight beam is fire but its weird to his Acid rap and 10 day fans since we hear one of the first times he speaks about religion so much. Now we all know about The Big Day memes. It’s funny cause this album is just like any other Chance project. In Acid rap he raps about his experiences while being under the influence of Acid, and what his current situation in life is after success from 10 days. In 10 days he raps about his high school life and grinding in music. The big day is about his current situations in life, what he does, his hopes, what he cares about and what has happened. I think the main ideas in The Big Day are his daughter and his wife, something most people in their late teens or early 20s can’t really relate to. And my major problem is the main focus on those two, as in almost all his songs we hear him rapping about those two subjects. However, we can’t really blame him since he’s so happy with where’s he’s at and decided to make that his latest project. Another problem is the quality of the songs, they don’t feel like a complete pile of songs and feels like Chance didn’t really do enough on them. While I can’t really blame Chance for doing what he did on his latest project, I think most people can agree that Chance is a really talented artist and I hope I see another project soon.

    Great breakdown.
    Bottom line: indie artists should learn to build a business around their music, with or without streaming revenue. Perhaps even a business using music to drive traffic to their brand and find a better way monetize on their brand with merch, shows/experiences, partnerships/sponsorships, and syncs.

I can definitely see artist adopting that mindset as streaming grows, especially with the rise of “antisocial celebrities”

      Darkify to new it seems like majority of the music industry is in it for money and lazy honestly. If they can release a tape every other month, and make 6-7 figures without leaving their living room, I think a lot would be content with that. I could be wrong but that’s just what I think. If live concerts die over the next 10-20 years I wouldn’t be surprised at all

    I still download all of my music because I've already lost so many songs that are gone forever. Small artists are quick to delete their songs, and you won't be able to get them once it's done cause almost nobody knows them. Plus it's pretty easy to download nowadays, you just gotta edit a few tags but that's it. My music player sounds better than any DSP too, and I got a ton of lossless files + my own EQs. But yeah, I got like 27k songs on my phone, and I know people ain't that serious about their music.

      I think it's more of a stylistic thing. I love all of chance albums but the big day is easily my least favorite. For me its strictly the sound of the music. I prefer that liquid-esque, jazzy, full orchestral sound. 10 day he made his name by essentially using his voice to create that melodic jazzy flow, acid rap was the golden era with fully produced tracks full of trumpets, horns, saxes, piano, and it just had an excellent ambiance. Even coloring book had very jazzy and melodic sounds as well as great lyrics and I'm not even someone who necessarily believes in god but the gospel sound spoke to me. The big day is more boom bap, fairly stale trap-sounding bangers and more of a mainstream sound. That being said the lyrical content is still great but I listen to music for the music as a whole, lyrics and vibe included.

    I agree with the sentiment of the comparison between spotify and youtube, but I think a key difference is that spotify doesn't really rely on ads like youtube does. I think most people or at least more than enough users of the site pay for it each month, so they dont have to be as afraid about big brands pulling out. For this reason aswell I dont think its possible to have an adpoloclypse like with youtube, dont get me wrong the $ each streamer makes could definetly flucuate, but becuase so much of the revenue for the business comes from customers I dont think we will ever see what we see on YT where channels make no money or are down 75% of revenue.
    Also i dont think spotify giving artist an easy way to make money has a downside, because most of the artist that rely on it just arent capable of doing anything like what chance did. Being able to make good music =/= having good business sense.

    Yassine, I might not always agree with your views but I must say, this video is well done.
    Yes, a common misconception which is often repeated in the post-internet age is that music streaming platforms are somehow a "threat" to major labels when the truth of the matter is that major labels and streaming services work together to reinforce the same corporate status quo. Most of the "viral" success stories which have occurred since 2015 have almost always been backed by labels or some kind of serious industry connections/money; of course, it's more about selling consumers the underdog "viral" backstory rather than the actual music. In no way has streaming provided a kind of level playing field where unknown DIY artists can get as much exposure as the biggest pop stars. Likewise, the democratization just isn't there.
    Also, I'm looking forward to your video on Platoon.

    shoutout to death grips for being pioneers of releasing free original music on the internet, on their own.
    in Oct 2012, while signed to Epic Records, who was going to delay it indefinitely, uploaded their own album No Love Deep Web to multiple torrent websites with a massive dick on the cover. Epic dropped them immediately. one of the most legally downloaded torrents in bit.torrent history. By the end of 2012, it had 35 million downloads. From 2012-2016 they released 3 albums worth of music for free, until they signed to Harvest + spotify era.
    they Don’t get enough credit bc they make ‘different’ music. but if you watched it happen as it was occurring, then saw how music was consumed for the rest of the decade, it was sort of historic
