I was lucky enough to have Iwan as my teacher at Salford, a genuinely incredible player but an even better person and mentor. I miss him, may he rest in peace.
What a lovely tribute. As an aspiring one time flugel player, I wore out lwan's CD trying to imitate his sound...of course I never even got close lol. Sadly missed. But what a band!!
I'm so glad I found this channel. To listen to all of the players reminiscing about performances, projects and friends has been fascinating. The excerpts of live performances are wonderful listening. As someone who used to follow the live comments and retrospectives on 4br it was brilliant to get an insight into the very highest level of banding. Thanks for putting it together.
I have just caught up with this video Sheona and the dedication to those 3 exceptional players. I had the very great pleasure to sit next to Iwan for one concert when YBS came down South and was so struck with his so mellow tone and the ability to make the music flow and speak. Also he was such a great bandsman putting me at ease even though I was only on 2nd Horn that time. I also remember you playing Concert Etude which I had never heard it played on Horn before and the arrangement was by Stuart, it really was breathtaking. Never to be forgotten

The series has been great, I only heard YBS twice - at the Knighton Festival of Brass , mid Wales in Oct 2003 and much later at Wyastone Leys, Nimbus Records Hall Monmouth, Wales The sound of the band of the Band on that first occasion still remains the best I have heard with that unmatched beautiful melodic sound. After many other concerts over the years listening to other Band sounds yours remains the best. Other than Peter's Memory beautiful memory rendition and the bad jokes before the start of the Australasian the band's ensemble sound remains in the memory.
Wait? What? thats it? no more stories? or episodes? We want more! :) to be Serious though, thank you very much for this insight in this most fantastic band. This series had me rediscover the YBS band, that we uses to listen to all the time back in the day. You still inspire!
This episode just made me take out the CD Mellow Moments and go to track no.9, wow Iwan was a special player, that sound is greatly missed. If he were still alive i wonder what band he would be playing with today ? Thanks for the YBS Years Shona, had it not been for lockdown / covid, we may never got to experience the memories.

Iwan was indeed a wonderful flugel horn player . I only knew him a little bit, but he was actually quite shy and unassuming . Very sadly missed .
