Sugar is a real killer in the modern world.Don't fight with cholesterol fight with sugar. A lot of sugar in the modern food.

    Hi Magnar,
I do like your aviation videos a lot. This particular video certainly touches on a topic dear to many people, not only pilots.
I don't know whether you should or shouldn't take statins. I'm a pilot, not a medical professional.
However I'll say this: we airline pilots are not medical experts and even though there's an abundance of fascinating medical material available online, we have to acknowledge our own limitations. One example here: you mention the hazard ratio as a function of total cholesterol. I once watched a researcher explain in a video the pitfall here: people with life-threatening disease like cancer often see their cholesterol level drop...
There's a lot of complexity and knowledge involved in understanding how a study has been made, its strengths and its limits and what the numbers really mean. Methodology and statistics, among other things, are crucial. It's not something the average pilot can reliably do.
There's also a natural tendency to be biased towards what we want to believe or on the contrary, towards what we fear most.
Intelligence and common sense are simply not enough. It's really a profession: researcher.
So at the end of the day, I do believe that following the guidelines established by well recognised institutions (AHA, NHS, Mayo clinic, Harvard etc...) makes sense. And they pretty much all point in same direction. High cholesterol is considered a risk factor for CVD.
I do understand it's not the best predictor at the individual level (ApoB seems to be a more accurate individual predictor, these days) but I wouldn't shrug it off as a meaningless number because the bulk of the guidelines say otherwise. I wouldn't trust doctors in certain countries too much but I'm sure in your own country, they probably have decent expertise 😉 and can make sense of the overall picture before suggesting a particular course of action.
    Edit: typos

Hi, thank you for your comment. The problem with AHA and other institutions is that they are sponsored by the food industry and the big pharma. Therefore, they are not neutral when they issue their guidelines. As a health professional from Sweden told me: "We have stopped listening to the Americans."
I think the Minnesota Coronary Experiment (1968 to 1973) says it all. The target was to test the following hypthesis: "Replacement of saturated fat with vegetable oils rich linoleic acid > leads to lower serum cholesterol > which leads to reduce incidence of coronary heart disease events and deaths." The group who received vegetable oils got lower cholesterol. But their mortality increased. The first result was published as a success. The second result was not published because it was against their agenda.
Our body is very complex, and there are may factors that can lead to cardiovascular disease. Putting the blame on cholesterol alone is not the way to go. But it helps the big pharma.

Thanks so much for this fantastic content. I've been keto/low carb for years now and my health has improved significantly. This will really help other flight crew that will listen and take it on board!

Statins are for the vast majority of cases much worse than the ldl cholesterol.
Most doctors are sadly thoroughly misinformed on this subject.
The information is readily available and once you start looking into the issue you can only draw one conclusion.

Hello captain, thanks for reminding us to be proactive looking for information, whatever the domain. Likewise good pilots are old pilots who never take things for granted. Looking forward to see your next video! 👍

My comment is not relevant to this video. However I once mention to a person who had what we call a private pilot's licence that I was not keen on small planes. His view was that pilot's with many years experience get blase. This seemingly was the cause of an accident in Melbourne Australia. Do you agree or not?

    • @pilotalex5677
      @pilotalex5677 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't think getting blase and flying for a long period of time makes you careless. I would rather say overconfident and less accurate or looking to improve.
That is what I think would make more accidents among experienced pilots. I may be wrong though as older experienced pilots are usually wiser. It all relates to your commitment and personality I guess.
Fly safe and like Cpt Nordal says "happy landings😊"

Thanks for the vid Magnar. You should make a video about the high levels of ionizing radiation pilots and flight crew are subjected to, is it something an aspiring pilot should be concerned about?

I had a quadruple bypass 6 years ago. So I have an interest in these subjects. However, two people you recommended, Sten Ekberg and Eric Berg are not medical practitioners. It doesn't mean the advice they are giving is incorrect, but the doctor title can be highly influential.

What about experimental mRNA Gene Transfection Therapies that were mandated for pilots and cause myocarditis, pericarditis, blood clots, organ and neurological damage?
And you are worried about cholesterol?

Did you know that one of the biggest "Don't litter" campaigns in America (USA) is sponsored by Coca Cola? Did you also know that Coca Cola strongly advertises for one-use throw-away PET bottles? Americans man.

I found this book in one of Dr. Berg´s TH-cam videos , underlying the unhealthy nature of seed oils: The Ancestral Diet Revolution: How Vegetable Oils and Processed Foods Destroy Our Health - and How to Recover! (English Edition)

Berg has long been exposed as an unreliable medical source. He's more into Scientology than nutrition. I've seen a nice video that fact checked him on cholesterol and it was appalling. I wouldn't trust him and his huge business machine, if I were you.

There are a lot of generalisations here and this is a biased video. You’re an intelligent guy and capable and of making your own, informed decisions. Please be careful publishing things which other professionals, who have spent decades in their vocation, disagree with. The risk is others will be influenced to make choices which are not in their best interests. This isn’t about blindly following advice or doing something just because you’re told to, but doing your own research and making sure you are using peer-reviewed sources. There are many recent examples in health where misinformation has caused real harm. We can and should challenge public health messages. You have quoted multiple sources and studies from the USA, ignoring other similar research from around the world.

Yes, this is a biased video, and I tell this in the beginning of the video. The reason I used many research documents from the US, is because Ancel Keys and the American Heart Association are responsible for a campaign that led to an increase of cardiovascular deaths worldwide. If I had added studies from other countries, it would have been a very long video with repetitive conclusions.
