I just watched ravenous last night for the first time since I was in high school and your video comes up on my reccomend feed
Good video and love the ravenous quotes
Shpadoinkle!
The Native Americans who lived near the camp of the Donner Party actually remember those events. Over a century later, those Natives were reached out to by historians. They described an oral tradition in which settlers moving west through the mountains got trapped in a blizzard. The Natives watched them almost the entire time and eventually took pity. They tried to leave them a fresh deer, but on their approach the settlers shot at them, so the tribe decided to leave behind food from a distance. The settlers refused to eat it. When the tribe realized the Donner Party was eating their dead, they were horrified and concluded to avoid these people who only ate humans.
Jesus. Christ. Wonder how they felt eh?
Seriously they only tried to help.
That's a bruh moment.
Sounds like bullshit.
@@CedarHunt I mean we can't decide for ourselves. We do know Natives have passed down a lot of stories so who knows really.
The cafeteria at Colorado University is named after Packer. The writing above the entrance says "have your friends for dinner".
"Fudge, Packer?" (I still laugh at that dumb joke, when I think about it)
That's awesome.
@@insertcolorfulmetaphor8520 I was thinking of that througout watching this. That and the part about not wanting to eat butt.
Ahhh the good old Alferd Packer Grill
Omg gross and funny
“Don’t you know I’m a desperate character?” Is the scariest thing to hear from a former cannibal.
😂😂😂 no lie
As the judge allegedly said at Packer's trial.."Damn it Packer, there were only five Democrats in this district, and you ate three of them!"
Talk about only being 3/5 done......
It was a 3/5ths compromise
The numbers are 7 and 5, but good quote nonetheless
Theirs a song by Phil Ochs about Packer
Sing a cheer for Alferd C Packer,
We're keeping his legend alive!
There were seven Democrats in Hinsdale County,
And Alferd C Packer ate five, ate five
Alferd C Packer ate five!

@@AtunSheiFilms Such a great film. Fantastic soundtrack, too.
I thought it was it was just some horror movie - but later found out it was based on historical fact .I watched the same movie numerous times as well as read about it .Same as with the plane crash in this mountainous area in Europe - a soccer team .Later found out it was based on historical fact - good stuff .
@@michaelclayton3114 All correct but for one thing: that team didn't crash on the mountains of Europe but on the Andes in south America.
@@arcotroll8530 Yes , I apologize .
So fun fact: CU Boulder has a grill named after Alferd Packer and it’s the best food on campus. Way back when, the students were allowed to decide on a name for the grill and a bunch of kids jokingly submitted his name, which ended up being voted for. None of the faculty or staff actually researched who he was until they already had the very expensive signs made, and they just decided it wasn’t worth changing.
This is the same university that gave us Matt Stone and Trey Parker, expect nothing less
LordOfGodsBringerOfLifeOverlordOfLightMasterOfDarknessTheOneandOnlyUniverse they made a comedy about packer so I assume it was their year that did it (they actually dropped out of university to finish said movie)
I’m planning to go to cu Boulder cool info man
So I guess the history department wasn't that good at the time.

Or they were in on it.
I was playing a co-op survival game today and my dad drew a madness card that made him take some of my health. It said "Donner, party of one? Your table is ready"
That shit made me laugh
This is a very old joke. My social studies teacher loved telling it back when I was in 7th grade.
I remember hearing it in a Robin Williams flick
What game is it?
game name?
It makes an odd sort of sense that cannibalism itself isn't officially illegal, most of the 'cannibals' who go to prison are convicted on murder or manslaughter charges in the process of getting the other people edible. To cook and eat something that has died independent of the cook/eater, such as a plane crash or shipwreck, particularly in the context of a survival situation, is certainly gross but has a certain survival-instinct sense to it.
It’s also illegal to desecrate a corpse, which you would have to to eat them. The laws against it also punish necrophilia
I believe there is a sailors code that allows for those stranded at sea to draw lots to see who of their number was to be slaughtered so the others could eat his flesh and drink his blood. Nobody was to be charged with murder should if they were rescued...
I got an Arby's add while watching this and I lost it when they said they have the meats
Most of the Native American legends involving cannibalism I'm familiar with involve the perpetrator become a "wendigo", a cursed being that hungers only for human flesh, and is perpetually starving no matter how much it eats. While the name for the cursed changes from tribe to tribe, its a common theme from the Northeast coast all the way up to Alaska.
Speak of the devil and he shall appear, huh.
Nooo. Its here!!
One of my favorite monsters in mythology. A lot of metaphor with that one.
@@alnu8355 I always found it interesting that almost all the tribes with some variation of the wendigo lived in places with hard winters.
Then you got the worst, and most terrifying tribal legend.

Just discovered your channel and I gotta say, you deserve way more subs and views than you have! Keep up the quality and I’ll be back for more.
Thank you!
I just recognized what’s playing in the background. That was chilling.
For anyone who doesn’t recognize it, it’s the audio of an episode of an old TV game show called The Dating Game. That particular episode is famous among True Crime fans as the man’s voice you hear there is a US serial killer
responsible for at least 8 brutal murders, and likely far more. That episode played well after he started killing btw. I just wanted to share as I had a “holy shit” moment when I recognized it.
It’s the theme song to the movie Ravenous
@@DogmeatDied989 That plays, too. But if you listen carefully to the very beginning of the episode, as in, the first few seconds, you can hear "The Dating Game" episode. The woman speaks first.
"If you die first, I'm DEFINITELY going to eat you. The question is, what will you do? Bon appetit..."
Great video! Very entertaining and informative!
BTW your resemblance to Col. Ives (a most detestable man) is uncanny!
My Grandparents are buried in the same cemetery as Alferd Packer. Kinda strange to go see this guy’s grave knowing the story about him.
Probably the Crowes at the time, recounted their fight with the John Jermiah: "Yeah, we fought him and his friends a few times. But then he took out his bloody knife, our comrade's flesh still on it, and pretended to eat it! Yikes! So we told him, we're never gonna fight you again if you don't play by the rules, you know?"
We had a few bloody fights with other folks but never with him again. He must have been bored out of his mind.
How are you simultaneously the best historian and actor at once?
Love this entry. Makes me want to play Oregon Trail again. I consider managing to complete the game by wintering in the Rockies one of my best.
Shame cannibalism isn't an option...
-You have died of dysentery
This is crazy that I would click on this video as I just found my ravenous dvd and planned on watching it tonight!!
People would be astounded by how prevalent cannibalism was in the past, specifically in inhospitable areas during wars or after failed harvests. I'd be surprised if there were folks around who didn't have a few cannibal ancestors.
One does not simply make a video about Alferd Packer without showing clips from Cannibal The Musical.

From Wikipedia: Upon seeing his friend Gallager hanged, Helm reportedly remarked "Kick away old fellow. My turn next. I'll be in Hell with you in a minute."
When the executioner approached Helm, he allegedly exclaimed "Every man for his principles! Hurrah for Jeff Davis! Let 'er rip!" and then jumped off of the hangman's box before it could be kicked away.
You forgot this part about Levi Boone Helm’s death
It's after one in the morning and somehow, I've ended up with cannibals!
So, I decided not to watch it, went to click the homepage and you made a great point..."you have nothing better to do"!

In Native folklore, Cannibals who were hungry for human flesh and freezing are called "Wendigo"
Please consider making these a series i.e. taking obscure topics in history & making a video on them.

The fact in Native legend is the Wendigo is a cursed person that eats others..implies that at least every tribe had a Donner party experience in their history.
