Thanks for watching. These are really interesting machines but would you ever use or even need one of these?
This video is meant as entertainment, always practice safety. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Yes I would purchase one of these as it makes trimming much easier on my back than any other weed trimmer I know of. I have a older very inexpensive one that if I fix the carb it will do the job for me. Thanks for the videos.
thank you D Butler
I’ve been repairing small engines as a side hustle for about 2 1/2 years now, and this channel has been a great resource and has really helped me grow my knowledge. The videos you have are very easy to follow, and it makes it easy for someone just starting out to diagnose the problem and fix it. Thanks for what you do Home Garage!
no problem Nate Biller.
I have one and love using it. It's very handy for overgrown grass and light brush.
yes sir!
These things look brutal! My grandma lives way out in the sticks and could really use one. I should start looking!
I know right they. They work though
Some friends of mine (my age) spent a number of seasons tidying up a large neglected cemetery, and using a regular string trimmer, even with a shoulder strap, got really painful. A local company donated one of these, so they can get right up to the headstones. Made a huge difference.
ah that makes sense !
Yes give me one of these home garage .I can use it in fresno
i just got one of this exact model recently and yeah im happy with it. i have an area thats impossible to mow and hard to use a regular trimmer on and a regular trimmer takes forever. this is perfect for that application. the person i got it from couldnt get it to start, i cleaned the spark plug off and its fine now. once i save up enough money ill probably get an electric one and thatll start me on my electric yard implement journey.
nice, and good luck with your journey !
I the cub cadet st100 one, and it works good I'm very glad I have one of these trimmer mowers!
nice trimmer!
These were great My grandmother had one 20 years ago !
I loved using it I miss using it
I would love to invest in one for My property
I have a lot of trees and exposed rocks
yes these work great on over grown land.
Great video, those walk behind string trimmers can be quite handy in certain applications.
Yes they are! Thank you WildeFox.
I have never had the use for one of these until my wife and I purchased our 17 acre retirement property here in east TX. Our trimmer was part of the property purchase. I used it last summer to clear the tall grass around our 1/2 acre pond. I have also used along our pipe fence line as well. 😊
these are fantastic for ponds and fence lines!
I have this exact model, it’s awesome!
It really is! thank you Stanley Williams.
I recently bought a simple push mower for trim work because there are areas that I need to trim that are easier to trim with a mower than a string trimmer. Something like this would take the place of my string trimmer and push mower. If I came across one of these for cheap or free, I'd definitely get it.
agreed, I always wanted something like this.. but I don't have enough trim work to need it.
Nice to see some exotics on your channel. Was fixing a quirky old push behind edge cutter and it drew a crowd from the landscapers at work.
that's pretty cool, what model was it?
@@HomeGaragechannel It's a Kamodo 2.5 hp edge cutter with a Chinese 152f engine (basically a Honda knockoff). "kamodo 4 stroke" will turn up a few pics in google images.
nice!
I have owned & used two different brands of walk behind string trimmers, & discovered them, as you did, at a Lowe's over 20 years ago. At that time, I was excited that a mower design was created that appeared to combine the advantages of a hand held string trimmer with the advantages of a conventional walk behind lawn mower, & I bought one at once.
In my experience, string line replacements usually only take a few minutes, & it's great to mow without the concern of engine crankshaft damage. The main downside is that the trimmer spindle shaft bearings need replacement usually after 1-2 mowing seasons, but this isn't difficult to do. Also, the spindle can become clogged when mowing heavy, talk grass. But, basically, the walk behind string trimmers I have used work quite well, in my experience.
yes you are correct the idea of clearing tall grass and no worrying about hitting something that might damage the crank is a Huge benefit! thank you Shadovanish
Yes I have one! Live in the country and mow random lawns for fun as a side gig. 💁♂️ works great for yards 1-3acre or really tall overgrown yards! Mine is called the bush hog! 🤠👍 a must have tool! -Texas
nice, thank you MrTinMan34
I’m probably leaving you too many comments but when you said you probably had a piece of steel that happened to me the other day, I hit the property marker outside in the yard here in Canada where I live they have a piece of rebar with a red top on it so I hit it by accident. Thankfully it covered that wasn’t badly damaged. I didn’t look under my mower but I’m gonna do today. I subscribed by the way.
thank you I appreciate the sub. And you're free too make as many comments as you want
My parents bought a DR Trimmer Mower in 1990. It's still being used by my Nephew. I bought one with on in 2000. It's been problem free. I changed the belt and trimmer head once in 23 years. I use it to trim around my ponds, tree's and out buildings. This spring I'm going to order another with electric start and self propelled. I'm 69 and starting to slow down.
very nice David! thanks for sharing
Bought one 7years ago. Always has started, cuts great next to fences, around trees. Well worth money.
nice, I really like these for clearing land
I live in northern ontario. This is a God send. I'm on my 2nd one in 20 years. You can't kill them.
yes these are great machines and Hello Ontario!
@@HomeGaragechannel Hello.
Neighbor gave me hers! Love it!
nice!
Make one would be pretty cool
If you don’t have the money for a walk behind brush cutter, then this can substitute for one. If you have to mow down a field that is filled with more random vegetation than actual grass then this can do it potentially better than a mower can, although you will be burning through trimmer line that way.
yes you are correct but trimmer line is cheaper than bending the crankshaft on a mower.
These things are awesome. I use mine to mow a half acre next to my front yard that my regular lawnmower can't do.
nice!
I need One, hi from Puerto Rico
these are pretty cool.
I have a ditch in front of my home with another on the side, 200ft. The ditch is wet most of the time and have to allow it to dry before mowing. SO the grass is high over a foot sometimes higher. With my high wheeled trimmer it takes only 2 hours max to take it on.
that's a very good use for these
I've never used one of these, but the biggest con I thought of and thought you might mention is inconsistent cut height. Since there are only rear wheels it seems like it's up to the operator to keep the height of the cutter consistent, which wouldn't be easy over a lawn. Of course, using this in larger areas where you'd otherwise use a handheld string trimmer this wouldn't be an issue. But that's the biggest reason why this machine cannot replace a push mower in my opinion.
actually the trimmer has 3 points of contact. The 2 rear wheels and the ball on the trimmer head.
@@HomeGaragechannel Thanks for the reply! That's interesting. I noticed the spindle looked kind of tall but didn't think it was tall enough to be a third point of contact. Since it is, that definitely makes this machine a more tempting prospect.
I started watching engine videos because I am trying to revive a barely-used homelite ranger 16in chainsaw that sat for about 10 years and I fell down the rabbit hole of your content. It is very clear and educational. Your responsiveness is great too!
thanks I appreciate it. Yes as long as you don't use the ball, on the concrete it should take the abuse for a few years. Good luck with that saw, Hopefully you'll just need a carb and new fuel lines.
I would use it . I have a tiny lawn service ,could use it on some jobs.
that makes sense
Had been looking for one of these because my daughter rents and let's the yard gets bad. Spotted one at Goodwill for $40 and did a double take. SOLD. Needed a new string head but the engine ran fine. Debris shield is broken a bit, but will see how it does before spending any more money on it.
wow nice FIND!
yes it's more than worth it, I have used one for past 6 years. It's cut down waist high weeds and thistles with ease
these are great for that kind of situation
I have A DR trimmer and ive used it for trimming under bushes around my junk parts mowers, around the Pond, Where the chicken coop was, And also mow tall grass however be careful around old buildings because I got attacked by bees from an underground hive. Around the old chicken coop.
yes it's happened to me before too, but I think mine was yellow jackets.
I could see this being really useful for a farmer with miles of fence
thank you David Mollard.
Yes, I would get one of these. We have a seawall that runs the length of the pond in our backyard. It's about 175 yards long. This would be great for cutting the grass along the edge of it. It would be a lot faster than using a normal string trimmer. I'd just run the mower over it, but it stick up a good bit and the blades would hit the wood.
yes that sounds like a great place to use it. thank you Jake Johnson .
I would get one of those machines. Be great next to the fence and my yard has hidden obstacles
agreed!
Hey bro what's up? Yes I would definitely get one of these walk behind trimmers. Where I usually have to maintain is a very large area plus there are a lot of trees and a very long fence.
Right on thank you Ramadin Sookhoo.
@@HomeGaragechannel you're welcome bro👍
One is a lot easier on the back and it would have to be free and not running. I fixed one for the son-in-law and ran it some. They're really interesting because of not having the flexibility of a regular trimmer as far as tilting the string goes but they'd have their place. BLESSINGS!.
thank you Lewie McNeely these are very interesting to say the least
@@HomeGaragechannel You're very welcome and they sure are!
I have a Cub Cadet and my back loves it and you don't shake after using it
ah you make a good point
These are good for older or somewhat disabled people. If weed eaters are too heavy for them, its a good option. But weed eaters are a lot lighter now, so maybe these might start going the way of the dinosaurs.
I see what you mean
I'd take one for free, but I wonder if it'd be worth it for the couple acres I have to maintain. Honestly, if you have some wooded area that you're keeping up and are already using a string trimmer to do it.... the #1 tip I can give you is to get an Oregon Mulching Blade for your weed whacker. Those things are worth their weight in gold, imo, and once you try it out, I think you'll agree. They aren't a replacement for a string head when it comes to getting up against fences and walls, but when you're in the rough stuff and want to really mulch the brash without an extra step or more work, the Oregon Mulching Blade will pay you back tenfold. There are a lot of reviews of them here on TH-cam that you can check out to see them in action before dropping the coin on one. For what little they cost, I really don't see you being disappointed - especially considering how many trimmers you have on hand. Setting up one with the Oregon Mulching Blade to handle the rough stuff would be simple and economical.
thank you I'll have to take a look at them
well for me i,d maybe buy one and if i lived in the same area as you well maybe etc.
it think it makes sense, thank you Patrick Stapleton
I would probably buy one of these it might be better than a regular lawn mower you don't have to replace the blades or sharpen it
very true, and I sure, you could get creative, with trimmer line.
Have one and makes trimming so fast 😊
nice!
I have a gravely brand of those Walk behind trimmers it was made for gravely by areins mower company who owns gravely mower company
very nice!
@@HomeGaragechannel I'll do a video on it one of these days
can't wait
We have a fairly large property with fencing and other stuff and it really is much more easier to use
I agree with you
A friend of mine had 3 of these shaved in some weeds that needed motors and I picked one up from him and put a motor on it
very nice work!
I guess it's pretty neat that you could use it as a trimmer while wearing shorts without having debris fly at your legs and sandals✌️
you could however, it's still a good idea, to wears some shoes.
I was given literally never used cub cadet one of these. it sat for 4 years with its first fuel tank still filled. of course it needed a carb and fuel tank cleaning to get going and it runs excellent. but finding someone to buy it is another story.
so you still have it?
@@HomeGaragechannel i do. I've had it here running and looking brand new. this model runs 480$ new. I was only asking 275.
good price
@@HomeGaragechannel hard to sell one. most people,.like you said, dont need it.
Well I wanted to learn how to actually use one of these so this video while informative didn't give me the info I needed
thanks and hope you find the video you need.
I love my walk behind trimmers. I have 2 Dr Trimmers and am about to buy a Toro for my Grand Daughters house but I will NEVER buy a Craftsman. They screwed me years ago would not let me buy parts for a device I had. I had found the parts and they stopped the manufacture from selling them to me. I was told they had a contract with Sears. Sears wanted twice the price and would not take the parts back if they did not fit. I Threw they unit away and said I would never buy anything Craftsman again. Sooner or later no matter how good something is made it will need parts.
I can understand how you feel, had a few experiences like that before
One quick question, is it possible to bent a crankshaft by force screwing a lawn mower blade? I was trying to force screw an after market blade on my low end Honda but that did not work out too well. The lawn mower was vibrating while mowing, to cut it short, I bought an original Honda blade, balance it, put it on, vibrations were almost completely gone. One week went along, used it again, the vibrations are back, any ideas?
No, I doubt you can bend a crankshaft by tightening the bolt(s) for a blade. The only thing I can think, is the bolt(s) have come loose.
Here's a question, would it be possible to make one of these out of an old mower just cut it then instead of the mower blade but the string trimmer on in place of the blade would that work? interesting idea
sure, you'd have to cut, the front part, of the deck open, between the front wheels and several inches back. Then find a way, to easily attach string, to a "shortened blade. You'd still have to have a good portion of the blade, because it acts as a counter weight for the engine. It's not ideal but it would work.
@@HomeGaragechannel excellent, let's reinvent the wheel lol.
If you recently changed the oil then you found a leak can you reuse that oil
sure can
The toughest part of cutting my lawn is weed-eating. The action makes my back hurt for days after. Would this be a solution to that problem?
you mean with a stick weedeater? If so is it a curved or straight shaft? For me I would get a different weedeater that better suit my size.
I would take it. We own 12.5 acres of land with plenty of weeds over 1 ft tall. its a new property we are still clearing and the weeds can and have overtaken us multiple times if we get alot of rain.
wow that's a lot of land to take care of
@@HomeGaragechannel indeed it is.
Yea, got three of em.
nice!
I want one
me too
I think it would be good if you used a ride on mower and you just used it along the fence line where the ride on can’t fit
that's a good idea.
While I haven't been actively looking for one, I've repaired a couple and have been waiting 10 years for a free or "dead" one to come my way😅 if they weren't IMO overpriced for what they are, I would've already bought a new one.
you got that right, the new price of these are insane!
Inside house garage I had three of those given to me and I never used them I just said all three of them in the back of my box truck I have and then after a while I decided that they were all taking up too much space in the back of the truck so I decided to sell all three of them
nice sale.
Great for the elderly
great for a lot of people
I turned one into a brush sweeper
nice idea!
What kind of cleaner you use to clean your equipment with.
I typically use a degreaser from Harbor Freight. Don't worry, they only have the one there.
I've also used LA's Awesome cleaner you can get almost anywhere
Thanks for your quick reply, been watching your videos for awhile, I really enjoy your work, you enjoy what you do.
no problem and thank you for your time.
I have no use for one of these since I live in the city, but if I did live in the country and have lots of weed eating to do, then this would be the way to go.
my thoughts too!
I had one but I’ll never own another. They are difficult to manage on a slope, which is 80 percent of my yard😅
ah, I didn't think about that
I have a Cub Cadet ST100 trimmer, I have replaced the carb, new spark plug, new filter, fresh gas, took out the inline gas filter and still won’t start. It fires for a second then dies. Any idea what else it could be?
you mentioned the other items to be new, but didn't say if the carb was new. how did you source the carb?
@@HomeGaragechannel yes bought a new carb
@@HomeGaragechannel …Also I should add, if I hold a rag soaked in gas up to the carb throat (I believe that’s what it’s called) it will fire but not die right away, it will run a little longer then eventually die.
then It sounds like the carb is either not getting enough fuel, or able to deliver enough fuel to the engine.
@@HomeGaragechannel I am thinking it’s a fuel issue. What do you think would cause the carburetor to not get enough fuel or not be able to deliver enough?
I have one a Troy bilt walk behind trimmer
very nice
I just sold one with a Briggs quantum engine on it a couple weeks ago for $100. He even traded in an old one with a Tecumseh. Btw I wanted to ask…Where did you buy that bottle from?
@@mc2whls thanks!
there should be link in the description, it's from Amazon
the one I use is a chemical bottle meant to be use for solvents
I’ve always wanted one of these. I’ve got a lot of tree in my yard and would love to have one just to zip around my trees. “I’m also very cheap” 😂😂😂😂love your honesty.
You should! and thank you!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
thanks
I just bought one last week (DR Power XLSP) I am a homeowner with a little bigger yard than most…this is completely useless for me, I realize that now…even though it is a great machine what it is designed for… for my need what I needed was a regular lawnmower and trimmer rather than this machine. I am having buyer's remorse
sorry that happened to you
These always struck me as being kind of pointless seeing as there are other machines which will do all the jobs this might be used for. Smaller areas, conventional strimmer. Big areas, a rough cut mower. These really aren't worth the investment. Have never had to walk away from a job because I didn't own one of these things.
I like the way you put that
I would probably say no to it. I got a comercial echo trimmer that l can put, and do put, a blade on or extra thick string for clearing the overgrown areas. So I wouldnt have a big need for it.
that would make sense then, thank you Ethan Miller
The biggest con is that everyone and their dog borrows it. 😢
yes agreed
I bought one of these for $10 and it ran when I got it and I had to get a new kill switch and cable
very nice purchase!
Don't need something like that where I live. Free and sell it is..
right on
No way I would sell it. I have one now that starts in then stops. I don’t wanna pay another man to weed whack my yard. They charge too much to use my Weedwhacker
sorry to hear that
I honestly would not buy this kind of trimmer because just by the looks of it it’s meant for larger properties & the string changing looks to be more complicated than a curved or straight shaft trimmer 😀😀
thank you Robert Hamilton
I have that same exact Craftsmen trimmer, it is a total piece of junk. The trimmer head/mow ball unit is plastic and shatters instantly when you hit a rock/stump and a replacement part is $90. The engine carb clogs all the time and you need to drop the carb bowl and hose everything down with Gumout carb cleaner like 3X a year. The fuel tank cap has a poor seal and gas splashes out around it constantly. The wheels are spaced too close together so when you turn the machine it always wants to tip over. The strings do not secure well and tend to fly off pretty often. I got mine off craigslist (in almost brand new condition) for like $75, no way is it worth paying retail to buy a new one. This model is a very poor machine, stay away.
Forgot to mention they are very hard to manage on slopes, anywhere steep forget it with this machine. If I had to grade this machine overall it would get a D minus.
yes you are correct it was designed to make more money on replacement parts than on the machine itself
if you look at this owners manual I think you'll see it's not designed for any sort of slope.
I,m going to Tell you What I did with Mine, I got tired of putting line on so, And Please Don't do What I going to say Next, I Put small Stranded Cable, Please I missing a screw or Two, So Don't Do it Unless, You are a very Cautious Person, and Have Confident in You self,. But It does work Great. It 1/8 inch, Smaller if possible. Use lots of Caution (PERIOD)Keep animals and other People away at all Times. Please don't do what I did.
I hear what you're saying
I bought one a couple of years ago and it is very poorly made. Chinese piece of crap.
I like FREE ALSO
