  • Curly tresses can be very intimidating...the curlier and more unruly, the more discouraged you can feel. In this video, I show how I manage my curly girls (really kinky curls, Shirley Temple curls, and even pin curls). Please note that the techniques in this video are best suited for dolls who have hair fibers that go completely straight in boiling water. For more stubborn hair types, reference my earlier video, "How I Restore Curly Haired Dolls."

    As we ring in the new year, i just can't help but be so proud of you and Colleen for making your way back to TH-cam, especially putting the comments back up. This channel, has done so much for me and is my Doll Bible, and I'm so excited to see what the new year brings you two. Thank you for everything you guys do for us, we really do love and appreciate it. This was extremely helpful and I'm so ready to try this technique on my Gabi!

    I'm so thankful for your tips & you sharing your methods.You've taught me everything I know about doll hair. Now I don't destroy my dolls hair anymore the way I used to more than 10 years ago when I didn't know that hair fibers came in different varieties like polypropylene, nylon,saran, kenaklon etc... I now know that the process of the boilwash & hair styling will vary on hair fiber & hair textures. Anyhow, I'm glad I've written down your suggestions for each hair type or combination hair & I can always re-watch (which I do) your videos for further help.♡♡♡☆🫶🏽

    Thank you for this awesome video. I just got Evette myself from the AG sale and now I know exactly how to tame her beautiful hair. The different hair fibers still confuse me. I watched your hair types video and I thought I had a good grasp on it, but I find myself still confused when I get a new doll and I try to identify the hair type. smh. Do you think you might be able to make another hair types video in the future? I know you girls are really busy, so I hate to ask. Thank you again for the time and effort it takes to put these videos together for us. You are appreciated. xo

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you! I'm glad this might come in handy for your Evette. Hair fibers are very confusing indeed. Sometimes I have trouble distinguishing them myself when I get a brand new doll (hair products can be misleading), or a used doll (damage can also mask the actual fiber type). I'm not sure how else I could explain the fibers and show the differences. It's really hard when you can't physically touch the dolls I show in videos. If there are any specific suggestions you have, I can see if there is another video I could make :)

      Thank you. I knew it was a big ask. I think it's one of things that I just need to commit to memory over time. So, like for example I know the G3 Monster Highs have that strange poly hair but I saw someone say in a forum that it's actually poly and saran blend. Just when I thought I had G3 hair figured out! And, I get confused about konekalon hair. Why on earth do companies deviate from different hair fibers within a given doll line? To confuse us! haha I guess I just need to hang in there and memorize it all as I go. I think I just need some sort of guide that gives examples of specific doll lines and what types of hair they have. But, I hope I didn't pressure you in any way. I just rely on your videos a lot for my dollie knowledge because I trust what you say and I know you love dolls. Thank you so much for writing back about it. I do consult the great oracle that is google about this stuff, but there information is so confusing and sometimes even wrong. ugh haha xoxox Happy Saturday. I hope you are both having an awesome day. @@AThousandSplendidDolls

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The thing is there is almost always hair variation in a doll line, which is why I never say "all of X doll have X fiber." It's most likely because certain collections are in production for a while, so things are changed up subtly with time (or depending on the factory itself). I have all the hair type info written out on my Flickr (on the thumbnail photo for my hair types video), if that would be helpful to you. I'm always more than happy to help in any way I can. Hair types are just a very difficult (and controversial) topic. I think what matters more than knowing the name of the fiber is correlating the thickness/softness with treatment type. So softer, finer fibers are more responsive to heat and need less of it. Coarser, thicker fibers are going to be more stubborn, so you'll need longer boil washes and potentially flat iron treatments.

    • @spaceshipfullofbunnies
      @spaceshipfullofbunnies 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you so much. That actually does help a lot. I'll head over to your flickr to check that out. This info really put things in perspective for me with how to treat the certain types of hair. Thank you, wow. I'm always so afraid to touch the hair of my favorite dolls because I don't want to destroy it. Now, I have more information to work with. I'll be doing this technique you showed us today on Evette's hair. She's such a beauty and I want to make sure her hair looks her best. @@AThousandSplendidDolls

    I have curly hair myself... I treat my dolls hair roughly like I would mine.
    For the first doll I wonder if you also can gently comb through individual strands if there is a knot in it and then reform the curl with the finger
    I'd say you can gently press the hair in a microfiber towel once you finished everything to get it to dry faster without disturbing the curls. I do that with my hair too.
    I wouldn't do that on the corkscrew style of curls though
    Thank you for this great tutorial, I absolutely loved it

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you :) You can try the comb method on Evette's hair, but I just find it makes it shed a lot and the fingers do a better, less damaging job. You also really have to make sure the curl is section right, otherwise it messes it up badly when using the comb. I try to be really gently with the curly haired dolls because their hair grows exponentially (Evette's double in size just from me holding her, thus why I was being careful not to disturb the curls more when I was treating it). I'm definitely not that gentle with my own waves ha ha!

    How do you tell hair qualities apart?

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have a video on how I tell them apart linked in the description :) But basically, the fluffier, finer, and softer the hair fiber, the more responsive to heat it is (so you don't need as much heat to style, and a boil wash would most likely remove all a doll's curls--so what this method is for). The coarser, thicker hair will require more heat, longer boil washes, etc (and this technique wouldn't be as suited for that hair quality).

    I recently bought a 1977 Mego Farrah Fawcett fashion doll that is new and never removed from box but the tape on the top of the box has lost its stickiness so the box is no longer sealed. The doll herself is still tied securely to her box insert card and she is in beautiful condition except that she is starting to melt or leeching plasticizer on her right side hip area and near her butt area but her front groin area only has a small amount of melted plastic on it which is hidden between the folds of the fabric. But her outfit is stuck and like cemented to her body in those areas. I don't know if it would be better to just leave her in the box or maybe if removing her from the box would prevent the melting from getting worse or not. She is 47 years old so expected to have aging flaws and defects but it's a shame because she is in clean mint condition other than the melting plastic stains on her white jumpsuit outfit. I think it may be just a done deal with these doll's and there may not be anyway to save her from melting further. She is stored in a cool room but if her aging plasticizer is leaking out onto her clothes it is likely to get worse over time. She has a hard plastic torso with soft vinyl or rubber like arms and legs but her arms are fine. I only paid $50.00 for her and her head and face paint and hair and shoes and posing stand are all in mint condition. I suppose that as doll's age they have physical body problems just like people do. Thanks.

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I had a similar problem with my 1976 Superstar Barbie. My dad bought her for me in 2003 (so she wasn't quite 30 years old). Her dress was entirely fused to her body. I opened her up and my dad managed to get the dress off (somehow not damaging it). She hasn't had any issues since, and I even store her wearing that dress. So sometimes opening up a doll will help issues like that, since they get better air circulation. They will still occasionally leech plasticizer and have that melting deformity, but it's not nearly as severe as when they are fully sealed, and their clothes don't seem to stick to them. Best of luck with your Farrah Fawcett doll :)

    • @Ken-vk8pb
      @Ken-vk8pb 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AThousandSplendidDolls Thanks for replying. Yes, doll's and all toy items were created to be used and played with and they were not supposed to stay inside their boxes forever. The main issue is the hard plastic torso as the plastic ages it starts to melt when in contact with the soft vinyl or rubber like limbs especially if the doll was stored in a hot and humid room by the previous owner. Doll's and all toys have to be stored in a cool air conditioned room and it helps if the doll is made of all plastic like the modern day Barbies since they will last for many years.

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, I have the melting issue with quite a few of my older dolls (I store them in my cool basement, which definitely helps). It also happens with old playsets from the 70s--I have a few Ideal Toys Jody sets that have the same melting problem (even though they don't have rubber/soft plastic attached pieces). It's a real shame.

    As a newer AG collector, I really appreciate your hair tutorials. I have Evette but have not unboxed her, so this one is really timely. I have thumb arthritis and back pain, so I might not have the stamina for this technique, but it’s good to see what a difference it can make if I’m up to it.

      Thank you! I'm sorry to hear that you struggle with arthritis. You can always work in sections on her hair, taking breaks in between so you don't get as stiff/cramped in the hands. I used to have problems with my knees (from an injury), so I couldn't stand for long periods of time to work on dolls. I would take breaks, and come back to the project when my knee swelling was better.

    OHMYGOSH I'M SO GLAD TO SEE THE COMMENTS ARE BACK ON💜💜💜 I've been watching y'all for years and used to comment quite often on your videos and of course i was sad when you decided to turn the comments off, tho i understood why, but to be able to ask questions again is great!! So I've used your first curly hair method for years on several of my dolls, (mystery squad kenzie thanks you immensely for the help😂) but recently i decided to fix the fuzzies on my coconut scented cali guy steven doll and his hair straightened, so now I'm worried about trying to fix Christie's hair too, as they both have what looks like that naturally curly hair like kenzie, but as i said Steven's hair straightened and i didn’t even have the comb in it yet. So i was wondering if this solution is something to use on that kind of hair? I know Steven's hair is lost at this point, as it's too short to actually recurl, but i was hoping to be able to defrizz Christie's hair without messing it up. Again, I'm so glad to see that the comments are back on, and thanks for this video, as I've been wantimg to look for an Evette second hand and was worried about her hair being an issue. 😊

      Thank you so much! I turned the comments on a few videos back, because I finally felt ready. I'm sorry to hear that Steven's hair went straight. It sounds like it was kanekalon--that happened to my sister's Cool City Blues Skipper doll (I was SURE she had nylon because of how curly it was, and then it went totally straight when I started combing through it). Yes, this is the kind of method you would use in that case. But Barbie grade kanekalon is VERY sensitive, so even trying to twist the curls back might actually make them start to lose shape. You could always test a hidden section of Christie's hair, and see what happens.

      @@AThousandSplendidDolls ok, I'll give that a try! Hopefully i can defuzz her hair without ruining it. Thank you 😊 And oh wow I didn't even realize. I've gotten so used to you not having comments that I usually just hit play on the next video in my lineup, but I definitely noticed it today!

      You don't rinse out the gel--keeping it in is what helps maintain the shine and reduce the frizz :)

      As long as you take your time, it's very unlikely you'd mess her hair up :) Plus, the doll hospital will still have her head if you did want to replace it.

    Thank you so much for this!! Do you have any recommendations for a substitute in case you don’t have any of those bottles you used to hold the gel mixture on hand?

    • @AThousandSplendidDolls
      @AThousandSplendidDolls  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So you can use any kind of bottle. They sell similar ones in the baking section at stores, or you can even wash out a condiment bottle (like a mustard one) really well and use that. Anything that has a little nozzle will do, just adjust the gel to water ratio depending on how large the bottle is :)
