I couldn't believe they would make a show about The Penguin, but I'm glad they did. This version of Gotham is just the right amount of heightened reality and the humor is so well done with Farrell's character work. I'll be tuning in on Sunday nights.
Well, I think it is situations like this that prove that why high profile actors especially a really good ones like Colin Farrell can be very beneficial. You take him put him in the lead and then put him around supporting characters who probably don’t cost a lot, but elevate it through their great performances. This is a way to really build out shows.
This is arguably the best pilot episode for any comic book series of all time. Hell, its my favorite pilot episode of any series probably in the last 5 years. Colin fuckin Farrell man.
I haven’t been hooked on a crime drama from the first episode this hard since Breaking Bad! Also Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti are already front runners for best actor and actress at the Emmy’s next year.
Sophia was not reaching. Never was. The moment she walked into the meeting at the house, she knew. But Oz is slippery and always scrapes out of situations. Which makes me wonder when he isn't able to. My hunch is that it'll have to relate to his mother.
I watched it earlier tonight. Fantastic show so far. It's so easy to forget that's Colin Farrell in that makeup. One of the things I find the most interesting about Oz is that despite being seemingly scared of no one, he's clearly terrified of Sophia. Not that I can blame him. She's more dangerous than he is, especially towards him for what he did to her brother. Cristin Milioti is amazing in that role. Crystal Reed also did a great job with her version of Sophia Falcone on Gotham. Although, hers was more sane and sympathetic, but still awesome. I still say it's a mistake for James Gunn not to have this particular Batman/Penguin franchise be part of the DCU, though. Seems like it'd make sense to do that, but I'm glad we have it either way.
The fact that they stay wirh Os so much, the city, the machinations, i love when i cant see the actors as anyone else but who theyre playing right now... The subtlety of the comedy, the subtlety of the rage. Nothing is overbearing or trying. It just IS... I dont want more than this. At this time i just want, this... And thats been a feeling thats been hard to find in not just a pilot but any tv show. Comic or not...
I love seeing Kristian’s face light up when he’s really watching something that’s truly great. What a fantastic start to the show. The filmmaking was wonderful from beginning to end. Colin Farrell’s and Cristin Milioti’s performances were incredible. I cannot wait to see more of them and see how their dynamic plays out.
I’ve seen the episode twice already. Seeing your reaction kind of felt like seeing it a third time and it was an absolute blast, looking forward to the weekly episode reactions!
Personally, I felt strongly that he wouldn't hurt the kid, or at least he was looking for the smallest excuse not to. Simply because the kid has a stutter. He probably connected to them both having a handicap of some kind but still trying to get ahead.
This show is so phenomenal, I watched it opening night with my father and we both really enjoyed it, I think we both enjoyed how much fun we had watching show and how not only did it feel like a proper expansion of The Penguin character from The Batman but, they also were able to make The Penguin somewhat sympathetic I found which made the first episode at least even more enjoyable. Yes, Oz Cobb is a very slippery individual but, he also goes after what he wants and doesn’t stop until he gets it, which I think we could all take certain elements of that sort of raw driving force to Oz’s character and apply it to our own lives as long as we don’t let it drive us down a dark path much like Oz is clearly letting his drive to get what he wants do to himself. I also liked that the show was surprisingly funny at times, much more so than I was expecting when I was given the premise that sounded interesting, like I don’t usually get a laugh out of just dropping the F-Bomb as I’ve ignored so much of it throughout my 27 years of life so far but, there were a few moments where Oz dropped it and just the bluntness and matter of fact tone he dropped it with had me laughing so hard. The one in particular that made me laugh my ass off was the perfect comedic timing of Oz’s first partial F-Bomb where after he kills Alberto Falcone and realizes in horror what he did and then he yells “WHAT THE FUC……” Then, immediately The Penguin title cards showed up with that fantastic Michael Giacchino Batman Score in the background and I think just the fact that they cut him off so perfectly to not go over their F-Bomb limit or to not unnecessarily drop that word, which I appreciated personally was they didn’t ever use that word I didn’t feel to just make the statement of “Oh we are HBO so we can do whatever the hell we want and we want to have Oz drop F-Bombs all the time.” I appreciate they didn’t do that, when a character would drop an F-Bomb I felt it was either on reaction to something awful that just took place or it was to strongly get a character’s point across which I felt was so great, unlike many other shows I’ve seen where it just feels like they use F-Bombs just because they can.

The writing, the direction, the cinematography, the editing, the prosthetic makeup and effects and the *acting*... Everyone involved in this opening ep, hit the pedal to the metal and it fired on all cylinders. Somebody, right now --just get the Emmy nom in the pipeline for Colin Farrell. WOW. Cristin Milioti's superbly subtle performance of criminal sociopath, Sofia Falcone, just freaked me out. What a force to be reckoned with she's gonna be!
I rewatched the movie before the show with my gf and they blended so perfectly, penguin is such a good villain . Can’t wait to see how this show turns out so far it’s awesome…. Btw love the Hogan reference lmao
Just an incredible start to this show. Perfectly fits in the world, but we get to see the real dark underbelly of Gotham. And with a performance like Collin Farrell is giving us, this is gonna be a special show.
"What that madman did to this city". Batman shows/movies have always done a great job of showing the difference between the organized crime mobs and the super-villains. Cobblepot with that statement, Maroni's words/actions in The Dark Knight Rises- they don't want chaos, they don't want to destroy the city, they just want to run it. The supervillains just want to use it as their playground- everything is expendable.
I freaking loved the pilot. Colin's performance is great except from small parts where his real voice is sliping. Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone brings out beauty & horror in her standout performance. Lastly Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni is another great addition to this amazing show.
Forgot how good the opening was. Fantastic show. The only thing I'm not feeling is the music which can be much more powerful. Wanting to hear a theme for the Penguin on the level of Braveheart, Vader, Superman, Luke Skywalker, etc. that perfectly captures the character, is emotionally evocative, and becomes instantly identifiable with the Penguin.
Really I didn’t put this together but really the way Sophia interacts with Oz all episode kind of reminds me of the sort of manipulative and sometimes flirtatious relationship of Batman and Catwoman kind of in a way, whether that was intentional I don’t know but, that’s kind of the feeling I get the more I think about the episode
This is one the best pilots I've seen in a long time. I'm genuinely interested and thrilled to see where this is headed, unlike with the Marvel and Star Wars pilots where I tune in after the pilot only because I'm a fan of the genre.
So much that could be said, and is being said in the comments. But the fn score is unbelievable. HBO just hits home runs on such a consistent bases. Amazing.
Riddler had a thought out plan except where his flood hit the already impoverished people of Gotham and left the rich alone. Not that clever in hindsight. And it’s Reeves doing the movie and the show so you know it’s intentional.
Lots to love in this episode really enjoyed it, but this episode should have been called leverage. The kid, the mom, Sal are all things that could potentially come back and bite him, and there all his fault.

Honestly they’re making me connect too much to Cob. I can definitely see them making the audience really connect to Victor and then Penguin offs him in a really F’d up way to make us want him to get got by Batman. He’s just too cool to be a villain right now lol
16:35 hmm, i guess they can be similar with sophia being like a more extreme, mentally unstable, rutheless lydia But i cant really see it much because when i see lydia i cant help but just "aww" at her ways, like her cute and nervous demeanor, cute and nervousness. I just feel like hugging lydia, even tho she is dangerous aswell. Sophia on the other hand is just unnerving every time shes on screen, dont get me wrong she is a very atractive woman, but her dead eyes and demeanor scare me, unlike lydia
I don't care what anyone's opinion is on Batman, but after seeing Sophia I totally agree with having him run around the streets sending these guys to Arkham.
Had no interest in this show, did not like the batman movie after loving the trailer, but i watched this show last night out of bordom, and i really ejoyed it, interesting and well written show. I've never seen an actor disappear into a role like farrel does here, yeah some of it is the prosthetics but its more than that. Dude is an underappreciated actor. Looking forward to the next episode.
Good show but i still question why make this. He wasnt big part of the movie and overall penguin is like a B tier villain. And there are no cameos from other characters apparently. Just because its a good show doesnt mean people have to watch it. Ill be interested in seeing the viewership
This show is trash. You can not be serious. Fake azz Tony Soprano. I'm not being a hater. The A.I is terrible. The writing is garbage. The acting is garbage. The best thing is the look of The Penguin. Very impressive. This show has no rewatchability factor

What I like most about it is Colin Farrell's Penguin feels like he could be a real person
