I was coming off a local lake in my kayak and a young lady had her 7 year old fishing bluegill off the dock. I started to chat with them and the boy complained about losing all his worms just feeding the fish. I asked if I could look at his setup and found he was fishing with a #8 hook and the gills were stripping the worm right off. I asked mom if I could tie on a fly that would catch fish and she agreed. I took out a light brown squirming worm on a 14 barbless and he immediately started getting hookups and catching fish. He was so excited and mom was delighted not to have to cut worms and bait the hook. The fish weren't big but he didn't care at all. It made his day and made me smile. There's definitely a place for this fly and this is a great way to tie it. I can now put all the leftover brace binders from the kids braces to work. Glad I didn't toss them. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about Fly Fishing but I found this video entertaining. I have been an avid Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass Fisherman for many years and know of a few fish catching lures that many Bass Fisherman wouldn't be caught dead with them tied to the end of their line with but I'm one who will throw any Bait that the Bass will eat. When the Wacky Worm became popular, I swore I'd never throw one but I now have hooks and weights specifically designed for rigging Wacky Worms. It's one of those "If I throw it, they'll eat it" kinda things. 👍
Thanks for the comments, Warren, and I appreciate your perspective on the topic. It's funny you mention this because, in my mind, I've never considered this relating to other areas of fishing. Fly fishing takes up about 95% of my fishing, so when I'm using another system, I have favorite lures...but forgot about those KILLER ones! Yeah this fly stuff is like Alice's Restaurant - where "you can get anything you want" - fishing wise that is ;o) Tim, nice honest tutorial. Good deal on the squirmy holder. Check out Craig Riendeau's Hairy Fodder, he uses those eye glass retainers (the kind slipped down the bow to the hinge, it gives a tighter fit) to swap out dumbbell eyes. He also tied the Wee Willie Wiggler, has a tail from a puffer ball tentacle, hackle collar, tied on a jig hook. I think maybe it was a platform for variations like the Squirminator, but that's a guess. I like flies that are crossovers from conventional fishing and Riendeau has a lot of them. Now we need a corn fly and a bread fly infused with scent. Just kidding. I tied and tried some squirmies with no luck. I really didn't fish them hard but I was reminded of the the time when we were kids, decades ago, with fly rods and fishing in fly-only water when my cousin got nabbed for using using a soft plastic grub. The CO was was really mean, ticked off and threatened to haul us in - but he just took us to our parents. I don't remember our age exactly but we were pre-teen and it scared the crap out of us!

Hi Andrew, and thanks for the comment. I know many fly fishers that do use jig heads, as it saves a step. In many cases, they tend to come in larger sizes, and I'm unsure if tungsten is an option? Regarding rigging, the Squirmy material is a smaller diameter, thus would tear easier with that configuration. I'm curious: Have you tried that setup before? Thanks again. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
This fly is unbelievable. Ive caught bigger fish with this fly. Who cares I like to catch trout with any fly that works. I saw an English tier that used lace and made two loops one at each end that works very well. You can also get it in color that match the worms and thread. Tight lines.
@@TimCammisa I think that pink is about the best. Fish just love them. Their my secret fly at out club pond. People wonder what your fishing with. It’s funny. Good fly and exellent video. Your a very gifted tier. Tight lines
Did you really say that because competitive fly fishing doesn’t allow the work material, that’s why you don’t see patterns using it posted as much. Just how many fly fishers do you think actually compete? The 2nd to last post says it all; its a terrible pattern and will likely kill any trout that swallows the worm.
Hi Fly Tyer, yes, I did say that and will stick to it. Social media has been driving the patterns that a lot of anglers fish today, and many of those fishers hold the competitive anglers at the top of the hill. The top competitive anglers are there 100% because of their ability to fish varying techniques, not just the flies...but you and I both know that most fly tiers want to know what that one "killer" fly is. This fly "was" that pattern for awhile, but dropped off of the social media scene for the reasons I explained. Also, I have been fishing this pattern for years and have never had a fish swallow one, and that includes both moving and stillwater situations. Thanks for the comments and I look forward to hearing more thoughts on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

@@TimCammisa Awesome, Tim, thanks! Since I'm not (yet) an ice fisherman, this will give me something productive to do through the coldest months. HNY to you and yours!

I fish the tan-brown.
love to take a kid or five out to my stream after tyeing a bunch of these.
FUN for all !!!
Don't tell everyone our secret color!! ;-) I have another one for you, Al, shoot me an email: tcammisa@gmail.com Hope you're well! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I feel like squirmy wormy is not really fly tying any way so this technique sits fine with me , and I'm primarily a float fisherman and I know how well a pink worm works so I do love these "flys " alot . Thanks for the video and tips
"Fly" or not, fish sure do love it, Clint! Do you tie too? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
@@TimCammisa I agree it's one of my favorite patterns as well as copper johns and egg flys , and yes I do very much enjoy tying my own flys and catches fish on flys iv tied it's very rewarding I just don't do alot of fly fishing . I do fly fish but I enjoy float fishing with a centerpin more . Il check out this link
Tim , I bought a Stonfo vice and you are using a regal which was the other one I was inclined to buy
Thanks for the comment, Bill. In this video, the vise is a Stonfo Kaiman, similar to a Regal: amzn.to/3k4jOQm Thanks again, and hope you like the Stonfo as much as me! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tim very nice tying thanks for sharing 👍
The Vermonter
You got it, Lambert, and thanks for taking a moment to comment. I hope to hear more from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Cool fly. Thanks
Thanks, Russell, and hope all is going well with you out West! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
These are great around larger fish, but around smaller fish I find it tends have issues hooking up
Great comment, and have you tried smaller versions of the original Squirmy? Try some, and email me the results: tcammisa@gmail.com
Good luck...and I know they'll work! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Lmfao that intro was good "looked up fly tying videos ended up with squirmy worm"
HA HA HA!!! There's nothing wrong with that, right?!? ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Be careful what you wish for! A friend recorded some really funny videos a long time ago, and we are working on getting them on the channel. They'll probably bring back some more bad memories, ha ha. ;-) Now if I can just get you a few fish on the Squirmy! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
nice Tim
Thanks, Mark, and Happy New Year! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Opps forgot to click the notification bell. Looks like I'm typing the new squirmy wormy. Thanks
That's all right, and glad you found it. Have fun with this version of the Squirmy...it's an addicting one, for both us AND the fish! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Hahaha, oh no another squirmy worm video. Great video buddy
Thanks, Pat...and trust me, there are only about five other variations that I'll share! ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I love it!
Thanks, Butch, and let me know how it works for you! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Brilliant

Ha! The Houdini of flies. ;-) Tim www.troutandfeather.com
AWSOME ❗👍
i dont get why squirmy guys dont just buy jigheads and wacky rig them.
Thanks for the comments, Stan, and glad it works for you, too! Any colors that have caught more fish than others? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
I'd fish with a spark plug if it would catch fish
Lol these flies wouldn't catch you nothing where I live. You can fish for months and might get 1 fish
👍
Thanks, Bill! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

solarez sucks ive bought two different bottles both have been gummed up in brand new bottles and the resin breaks apart easily after you use the uv light! dont reccomend solarez!
Mine gets gummed up in the winter because I tie downstairs. Have you tried microwaving it for 8 seconds? Does the trick for me.
@Jeff Jones yes I've done that it thins it out great but when I coat the fly the resin breaks apart!
@@smattext good to know. Thank you for sharing that.
@@smattext Have you found something better you like?
@@justaman3333 No not yet I just received some loon uv clear finish I'm gonna give that a try!!
Fish eat worms period.
ABSOLUTELY! Hopefully, they also like worms with bright orange beads and attached to a hook. ;-) I appreciate you taking a moment to comment and I hope to hear from you on some of my other videos. Tim www.troutandfeather.com
Tried this squirmy and it is definitely not bullet proof!
I'm sorry to hear that! What happened for you? Did the Squirmy come out of the loops or did one of the loops break? Tim www.troutandfeather.com
