    Helped allot, dealership told me it was the clutch and wanted to charge $6K, i changed this and boom, all worked perfect.

      I have the same problem with my 2018 Cascadia dt-12 and took to Floyd Truck in Rapid City, SD and they asked to remove the transmission to check the problem @$200/hr for about 20 hrs and when I refused to repair then they said May be have to check the clutch. BTW what’s the name of this part and how much is this ?

    Great video. I have a D12 that the transmission is making an air chirping sound (best I can describe). Air pressure drops, and from time to time it will go into neutral when going slow and will not go back into drive until the air pressure is well above 100psi.

      This can be a one of two issues. An air system problem stopping the trans from acting right. Or the trans shift range cylinder not activating correct which will cause a chipping and rpm flare ups. Hope that helps.

    Hi J D i hope u remember me i am rudy from Black wolf i take my truck Iron do to Oil change and they fucked my truck over there for 3 days theyre stupid people they dont know anything and they called u so u can come and see my truck , u looked at my truck and u told me they fucked up the truck and i have to take it to the dealership, ur the only one that knew wats going on with my track and u fixed it the second day
    All i can say is ur an amazing guy and u know how to work with trucks , i hope u open ur own shop so i can be ur customer
    If u guys read my comment make sure u guys dont take ur truck to Iron cuz they dont know shit and they will fucked up ur truck

      Thanks for watching man. Dt12 can be a great tranny when maintained. They all have there issues from time to time but for the majority it holds up pretty well. And for being able to have both auto and manual mode in one trans is a great benefit.

    just to mention ... the cpc was changed as it was stolen from my truck and i bought 2 used ones ... one is not programmed and it does crank my truck but won't throttle or put gear on .. and the second one is the programmed to my vin and doesn't crank the truck at all

    I have same problem but doesn’t shows any code and checked 3 times by dealership and I also changed this shifter but same issue. What to do. Dealership also doesn’t have any answer because their test drive also doesn’t shows anything because it happens with loaded trailer sometimes after driven for couple hours.

    Hey guys, I got this transmission problem and would like your opinion please.
    2016 cascadia evolution where I stop at a red light and my transmission shifts to N on the dashboard but not on the shift selector. My fix to this is pull the air brakes, then shift the selector from D to N (matching the dashboard) then back to D. It takes off right after I release the air brakes. This happens randomly not at every stop.
    Any idea what it could be? Each time I hook a computer to it, returns no errors.

      Thanks for reaching out. The dt12 will automatically put itself in N when coasting or at a stop. Now if it’s not returning to gear when throttle is pressed than we have a problem. I would expect to see issue with range position or clutch fingers.

    I got spn 521488 fmi 5... could it be same part at fault....cause symptoms are pretty close.... especially when hot...
    Cools off and works fine for a bit...
    And HSA light come up....

      Good question man. This issue is more relating to the shift controller failure also known as AMT. if this code stays active than I would definitely lean towards the AMT being replaced. Kinda hard to get to and you would need a computer to do some resets and learn procedures.

      Hopefully won't need to do the learn procedure...
      Could it also be that dreaded split pin bushing...,?

      Thanks for reaching out. If your trans will not go into manual mode than one of two things will cause this. Might have a parameter issue or the shift stalk selector is failing.

    Hi Mr JD I have a truck suddenly no sign on the hight way loosing power at all ,after stopping restart, neutral step on the gas engine RPM is normal, but after I shift to drive step on gas there is no any response, reverse gear, too, there is a burning smell under the truck didn't find where there is any abnormal, no engine light, no code, Coolant engine oil all full , 2016 year of Freightliner Cascadia DD15 engine automatic transmission , do you have any idea what is going on with this truck? please let me know thank you very much!!!

      Man I’m sorry to hear about your issues, it really sounds like something inside your trans is screwing up, especially with that smell could be the clutch coming apart. You would Deff need a trans specialist , most likely a dealer to inspect. Being 2016 this is most likely your issue.

    i have an emergency question if you can help please … I have 2016 Cascadia with dt12 automatic transmission and my shift controller on the transmission is damaged … does that make my truck not to start at all ?????????????????????
    the guy who checked my truck with the computer said so but I kind of have a doubt as it doesn't make sense unless if you confirm
    i also changed the cpc4 and reprogrammed it to my vin and still doesn't start the truck and that's the only error it's showing

      Thanks for reaching out. If your dr12 shift controller is not communicating than yes it will make a no start condition. And sadly it requires the trans to come down for that repair. And while it’s down you may want to get it all looked at.

    Do the dt12 have a lot of issues ? Are manual transmission better for owner operators?

      Great question, any automatic trans will have issues. Especially with the amount of miles being put on them. If you are good at floating gears , the manual trans will last longer and be cheaper to work on. Autos are nice but manual always wins.

      I’d say the problem is your trans. More than likely your shift actuator isn’t grabbing correctly. It might be your shift stalk switch but a little giggle of the switch and you’d be able to find out if it screws up.

    Thanks for this, definitely nice however.. definitely didn't fix the issue on the one I'm dealing with figured try pick you brain since dt12 information in slim to none got a 15 Cas with a dd15 truck randomly won't go in to any gear just kicks back to natural does on either d or r. Only code that's is on the truck 520404 fmi 4 but its inactive even when its acting up.. checked the air tanks all dry, the regulatory on the Trans got replaced few months ago, the ippc won't load on the computer though it fails to connect. Tried new stalk switch and even a new msf since that's where the code was under. Only way to get it to act up is unplugging the pins going to the gateway out of the msf... any help would be appreciated at this point thanks for in information though Definitely watched a few and have helped thank you for your time

      This issue of your is definitely an internally trans issue. A lot of times these dt12 trannys suffer from a split pin failure or a CPCA failure which would both cause this issue. Depending on the mileage you may need quite a bit to get this right including clutch, cpca, split pin repair and inspection of a set of k1 gears while there there. Unfortunately when something in the trans goes down it requires quite a bit of parts to replace to make it right.

      Great question, the 525 code can also be a failing shift stalk switch. If that doesn’t fix it. It will be in the wiring to the switch.

      This will be a communication problem in the wiring from trans to shifter. Realistically you would have to be good at wiring diag to tackle this one.

    Hello. Same transmission. Have problems getting in gears after overnight stay. Like if I leave the truck off for a night it might go in drive but not in reverse from neutral. Putting it in drive and then straight to reverse seems fixing the problem. If I start driving like that it might miss some gears too. One time it just didn't want to go in any even gear. After playing with it for a while every morning - it's working fine for the rest of the day. Any idea what's could be wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Yes sir common problem with these dr12s. I would say once every 500k they need there counter shafts rebuilt or there shift rail bushings replaced. Usually the bushings are seizing and not grabbing the gears when it comes time to shift. You will need the tranny dropped so recommend you find a shop or tech you trust to do reliable work

      @@ThatOneGuy-hp2pb usually people just deal with the issue if the unit is out of warranty due to pulling the tranny down is often crazy costly. Atleast until they can’t take it anymore. Than any cost is worth it.

    have been looking all over for information about the dt15 transmission. 2018 Freightliner, we are new to automatics, always having had manual transmissions. Is there a adjustment so the transmission does not go all the way down to 1st when you take off? With a manual you can take off in 3rd or 5th whatever is needed for the weight you are carrying.

      Thanks for reaching out and great question. Yes there is a parameter change through the tcm that will allow you to start off in higher gears , also different modes like creep mode , performance mode, eco modes that you can get activated. Every trans has its issues but once the bugs are out it will be a great one.

    Hey I have a automatic 2017 freight liner cascades it’s stuck in manual mode. It goes into reverse, neutral, and drive but In manual mode only. I replaced the switch already but no luck. I checked the cables and it’s getting ground and power. Any ideas or tips would be appreciated!

      Great question. If your switch is good and it’s getting stuck in manual most likely cause is the trans controller isn’t responding to the request and stuck in manual. If all gears are good while driving and no flare ups of rpm’s than il be leaning towards the tcm trans controller. If there are other issues while driving like going into neutral or flares than diag would have to be done on trans internals.

      @@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 thank you man! ill see if i have any updates on it, and regarding the trans controller is that inside the trans ? i think it has the d12. it also has a abs code and thats for a wheel speed sensor for the front im not sure if that has anything to do with it at all ? i also have not checked if its properly reading the switch thru the scanner. ive just been fixing issues after issues on this truck. all wiring since it had the whole cab switched!

      @@josephgomez5557 the tcu is on the driver side of the trans. You’ll notice two big connectors going to it from when ur underneath. The abs and radar will affect the operation of the trans so I would Deff start there and see if it helps before chasing tranny issues.

    Lot of background noise and want to listen it properly. I have same problem and went to Rapid City, SD Freightliner and they told me to remove the whole transmission to see what’s the problem and report doesn’t shows any code

    I just replaced a clutch on a cascadia 2017 the cluster only shows “manual” and it won’t start, it also says shift to neutral when the truck is already in neutral

      That is a known issue with these dt12s. A lot of times people shit down the unit with the trans in a gear and when they go to restart the eng it won’t crank. Or other times the trans doesn’t recognize the gear it’s in so a fix would be make sure there air pressure, step on the brakes, and go from n to d than to r. It should actuate and catch. Hope that helps.

    Hello my 2016 fright liner is some issue when I’m driving fast working fine , but in heavy traffic is changing in nature by it’s self and after 4 to 5 seconds is jumping to D please any help thank you !

      The dt12 is a tricky beast. If it drops gears on you it’s not always a problem. If it jumps rpms or throws to neutral than we definitely have an issue.

    I got Solid ABS light going off and on and check engine as well and another thing is the gears only shifting manual not automatic i can drive shifting the gears manually and its not going over 55pm , do you have any idea what is going on

      Thanks for watching, when you have a radar fault or abs fault it will restrict you transmission to manual mode. So I imagine it’s all related to your CEL. But trying to guess what a cel is a game that leads us nowhere. Your best bet make a friend with a diagnostic software.

    I have a 2017 Western star 5700 with the BT 12 transmission. When I start driving from a cold start, The transmission sometimes Mrs. below to mid gears and the even numbers. Then when I get to Highway speed the transmission attempts to reach 12 gear but only goes back to neutral and then back to 11. Also one thing I forgot is that when I am driving from a cold start, the transmission will stay in neutral and takes a while to get into the proper gear so that I can drive away. A dealership says that I need a transmission control module which you probably know is on a nationwide back order. What do you think?

      Thanks for reaching out man. The dt12 tranny has been a problem for some time now riddled with mostly the same complaints. I would not think the tcu is the issue. More than likely it’s something internal likeshift rail bushings. A bad tcu will do some crazy things but probably not the shifting concern. I would trust a dealers Opinion and that better fix the issue or I’d be pissed for u. Hope that helps some.

      Great question man. Realistically you would just have to go through the troubleshooting steps that was in the print out in the video. Jumping to removing the trans would never be my go to move but it may just end up in that direction.

      Well your not off to a good day. It could be something simple to a shift controller not seeing the data link to something a little more complex like the trans tcm failing. Realistically a shop would need to hook up with a Comp and start diag. Don’t want to get your hopes up saying it’s something simple when it very well could be in depth. But reach out and let everyone know what they find.

    When I put mine in gear it shows N on the dash but you can hear it trying to find the gear. What could that be?

      This would be an internal trans issue. The shift rail bushings are most likely worn out. Trans will have have to come down. Perfect time to do a clutch while it’s down.

      Great question, and yes if the selector switch was faulty than it would keep truck from starting as it wouldn’t know what gear it was in. As for rpm flare up that would be a different issue internal to the trans.

    Have a question I have a 2016 freightliner cascadia automatic this problem only happens when winter comes and it's cold outside my semi will shift into neutral around 4th and 6th gear but sometimes at anytime then after awhile when she warms up i dont have the problem anymore until the next day of course any ideas thanks.

      Thanks for watching. And as for the music it was a learning process. In the later videos it’s shut off cuz TH-cam usually cuts out audio when they notice any copyright content. When the trans throws itself into N and can’t find its next shift point it’s usually clutch dampeners not engaging correctly or bushings on a split pin that controls your shift. The bushings tend to get worn out and with a weather change this would be the most affected. I’ve also had people swear once they changed the tranny fluid this issue went away. But either way we would need a computer to run some tests on your internal trans components and see how there holding up. Hope that helps.

      if there is a shifting issue such as rpm flare us or dropping gears,or skipping gears with noise,or cant get into gear while cold than your issue is definitely internal and will need tranny dropped.

      That is a tough question to answer. There are so many factors in play. But if you can get 400-500k out of them you’re doing pretty good. I’ve seen premature failures at early 100k than see original ones at 600 k. But don’t expect to get much more over 500k

      Great question. Never tried. But…. Auto and semis use different diag ports. So maybe if you have the right port connections you can get generic codes.

      The low air warning for the transmission should come on if the air pressure is below 100 psi

    2015 automatic Frieghtliner cascadia dt12 transmission
    Which it’s not allowing me to go into to gear once I go into gear it just Beep
    I had water in my air tanks I had to drain out
    It started to work but next day
    Same thing happened
    Fault code spn 521485 fmi 2
    I bought the part in the video still same issue

      This could be a couple of issues. Either shift selector issue or wiring to trans issue. Very common issue with these and cause the same symptoms.

      @@rashpal8620 your problem will be inside the trans. There are a few tests we would be able to run while using a diagnostic computer and it would help narrow down the issue. More than likely it’s a split pin or rail issue inside the trans.

    Hello Mr JD,I have 2016 cascadia with Dt12 automatic and when shift to gears and driving it shifts itself to neutral and will not engage to gears .I have change the clutch but still the same issue .Took it to the dealership and they said this(UNIT WILL NEED THE HARNESS FROM CPC TO STALK SWITCH REPLACED).They said it’s nationwide back order.Please any help will be much appreciated.

      Usually the clutch does have issues where it can’t grab right and ends up in neutral. As for the harness it’s a bit unusual to do unless they have a specific code that troubleshooting is leading them to do that. Most problems are the trans brain ecm, shift stalk like in the video and a couple of internal components in the trans. Rarely the harness. If your able to I’d get a second opinion at another shop, if it won’t drive right than leave it there and they better back up there knowledge with good work.

      Having the same issue, did you manage to get it fixed, mine slips to neutral and sometimes re-engage and sometimes wouldn’t but after about 15 miles it’s going nowhere unless I stop for like an hour, I think it happens when it’s hot

      Thanks for watching. So with this issue the computer recognized that the clutch is unable to fully open. It may not be an issue yet but it will turn into one. It could be low on air and trying to shift causing the code or just the clutch dampers getting old and worn out. Which would need the clutch replacement. Hope that helps

      This can be a tricky one. But most common issue I’ve seen is low air pressure not allowing it to shift. That or when it was parked it wasent out into neutral. If air pressure is under 80 psi than I’d fill the tanks with an external source than key on and switch the gears back and fourth amd hopefully it’ll catch. May have to disconnect the batteries And let it rest so it’s resets as well. If that doesn’t help than your getting a ride on a tow truck sadly. Let me know how that goes.

      Great question man. I think you already know what may be the issue though. That shift selector is the most likely failure in that instance. It very well would be a wiring problem to the controller but the most likely cause is the selector switch.

      Great question and thanks for reaching out. In your case I believe the issue would be internal to the trans and possibly a clutch issue as well. Depending on the age of your truck it may need quite a few repairs to that trans to ensure it doesn’t have future issues.

    Hi.JD. I got freightliner 2017 with DD15 about . Recently the gear should shift from 5 to 6/7, but it shift neutral for 1 sec and turns back to 7, also happened from 7 to 9.       Thanks for watching and reaching out. While driving the dt12 trans will go into neutral under normal operation just to save fuel and load. But doing it while your under acceleration is an issue and more than likely your range split pin isn’t grabbing your gears correctly. If it’s that second one , than your Deff gna need your trans pulled down and inspected. While there in there, you may want to consider a new clutch if it’s reached old age. Hope that helps

For example I drive on road need gear 5 up to 7. But it always shift neutral or no gear then 1sec later it can shift to 7. And right now when I park at yard shift to N, it can't directly back to N.       @@user-gb3ls2xl6y these dt12s are common for these type of issues as well as rpm flare ups between shifts. I’ve seen them as low as 50k with major tranny issues. Infact I’d be surprised if you made it to 500k without any issues. Kinda Rare these days. Same result with worn out clutch dampers and split pin bushing repairs especially with throwing itself into neutral. It very well could be a harness but no way to know till we get a computer hooked up and start testing out the components of the trans.

      Thanks for watching and reaching out. With that particular code it could very well be the trans shift selector. But troubleshooting would have a tech check software levels because there’s usually a fix in software. Than basic transmission tests to make sure everything else is good. Realistically a computer is needed to figure out the true issue. Hope that helps.

      @@retiredinmanila they told me to swap out the tcm and shifter control module which are both on back order...Found a used one for 2500 with a warranty put that one in but it wasn't allowing us to recalibrate it so at this point I can't afford to keep just tossing money into a automatic transmission so we're gonna convert the truck from automatic to manual and get rid of all the automatic transmission problems for now...But yeah, my problem they said is the tcm and shifter control module...

      @@ramonrobinson5185 I’m out in Az but I don’t have a shop of my own. Hopefully one of these days. A cruise issue can be multiple things. A switch not reading correctly, abs , engine, trans,or radars throwing any code which sounds like your issue. You might want to fix your trans selector issue and that might be your cruise fix.

      The shift can infact interrupt the data link so it can take down abs ,any radar if you have it and throw or not throw a check eng light. If the abs light is coming on and it won’t go into gear after that than you just have to get a scan tool and find out what code is taking it down.

      This sounds like a typical dt12 issue. More than likely one of two repairs will need to be made. Your clutch is not grabbing when cold or your split pin bushings will need to be replacing. Very common for these trans to have this issue and a rpm flare up issue.

Than you are looking at a shift stalk issue,outdated software not allowing it to return to N, or just the trans controller ecm not making the requested change. Either way you would need a diag computer to test all the trans functions. Hope that helps some.

      I'm back, I got the tranny rebuilt and changed the CPC and it drove for about 4mths now when I put it in drive it want go pass 2 gear after that a light comes on and it says low split solenoid probably. Put it on the computer and it's showing code fc 524286/4

      Great question. Most likely not the problem like in this video. If it failed the relearn procedure than were looking at clutch dampers or shift rail failure. Looks like trans is going to be dropped and inspected.

      @@solidcirclewealth1802 thanks for reaching out. With these codes I would be pushing more towards a wiring issue. Especially if they were in there something might be getting pinched or possibly rubbed through causing those codes. If these were active before than ur outta luck. If they just started than you might be able to get them to cover costs on repairs. Hope that helps.

    I just bought a Cascadia with 600k miles that has the DT12 transmission in which the RPM will randomly go very high as if it misses catching the next gear. The clutch was recently replaced along with a flywheel resurfacing and another thing I noticed is that it is stuck in automatic mode and it won’t switch to manual mode when pressing the button. What could it be in regards to both issues JD? I’m subscribed to your channel and I like your videos

      Appreciate your support and watching. The famous DT12 rpm flare ups. Many people suffer with this. There are a couple of issues that can cause this to happen. One is the clutch itself not fully releasing or what’s called a split pin bushing repair. The bushings are getting worn out not allowing for proper grip on a rod that changes gears. It’s not to expensive of a repair and you already got the hard part done. The clutch. So get to a dealer and get this done. It’ll be so much better being back to normal. Now, by any chance does it affect or lock you out of manual mode when removing the DT transmission for any type of service? What is preventing me from being able to switch to manual mode? Any ideas? Can you lock it or unlock it from using Diagnostic Link?

      @@superpowercars another good question. I am not positive that manual mode can changed by a parameter but there are so many parameter features that I wouldn’t doubt it. But again there would be no reason they would mess with params while doing a clutch job. Usually auto and manual mode are screwed up by abs, eng, or radar faults. Any of those can take down driving features. But if none of those are on than I’d suspect a faulty stalk switch.

      I see… once again thanks for your input on that one. Maybe in the future you can show us how to repair the split pin bushing that you mentioned before that causes the DT12 transmission not able to shift right and thus causing the RPM’s to randomly rev up high while rolling and going through gears

      @@bustedknucklebydieseldr3228 it has and I changed the shifter but the problem still persist, I towed it to the dealership and they realized the xy shifter was faulty.

      @@obembeolabode3819 so the xy shifter is on the Eaton trannys not the dt12s. Most likely cause for not going to drive on the dts are range cylinder or shift controllers. The shifter lever was a quick test to see if it helps. For some it does. If it didn’t one of the other two items would help it. And if it has over 500k miles I would do a clutch at the same time.

      If the truck won’t start I think you got bigger issues. First things first does it register neutral and how are the batteries.

      @@9215307507 if you can move the trans from neutral to drive or reverse than the unit will start than the issue could be very well your trans shifter. If that doesn’t cause your trans to shift back into neutral and start than the issue is Deff inside your trans.

    Hi I got a 2019 Cascadia it is jumping out from gear while I driving for a split second and goes back, this is result a big yank really hard on a truck, specially up hill!

      Thanks for watching and checking out the channel. The dt12 trans will coast into neutral while driving when it feels less torque load for fuel economy reasons. But when it’s clearly uphill like yours forget economy you need power. Usually close to 500k miles you’ll needs a repair done on a split pin bushing that controls the shift itself. That or your clutch is starting to give out. With either one I’d def recommend a dealer to inspect as there warranty is usually better than smaller shops.
