- Distinction Between Early and Later Fanon | Frantz Fanon | Postcolonial Theory
This video introduces you to the main distinction between the conclusion of Frantz Fanon's 1952 book "Black Skin White Masks." and his alter work. In so many ways, Fanon is considered a precursor to what would later become postcolonial studies but his thought impacted people from all over the world and he was widely read and translated.

What is Postcolonialism:
Since I claim to be a postcolonialism scholar, I think it is apt to include a brief description of my field of study. In my view, Postcolonialism ( also written as Post Colonialism or Post-Colonialism) is a dynamic field of literary study that focuses on the history of colonialism and native responses to the colonial policies and life after colonialism formally ends. The field of postcolonialism also offers insights into the literature and culture of the the former European colonies and their struggles after the end of colonialism.

Hello Mr. Raja!! Greetings from Puerto Rico.
I am currently reading the Wretched of the Earth. I have doubts concerning chapter IV. It is not clear to me if Fanon condemns the idea of Panafricanism or not.
My impression with the previous chapters was that there was a claim of abolishing borders, class distinctions and bourgeoisie ideology within the newly emancipated people. Nationalism and nationalist struggle is a necessary step towards the possibility of the construction of a pan African society. Precisely because, national consciousness or an emancipated consciousness is achieved through armed struggle and without recognition of the self it would be imposible to recognize ones self in its African brethren.
I really am not sure if im misinterpreting this chapter. Im not sure if he sees the creation of a self conscious nation state as the end goal or if he sees the abolition of the nation and the state as a posibility. If you'd shed some light on this subject I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you so much. I guess you are talking about the chapter on national consciousness. I will read it again to give you a better answer, but at this stage in his career Fanon was strongly in favor of national struggle, as he himself was involved with Algerian struggle, so I think he is not denying Pan-Afriacanism (Senghor and others were then pushing for a United States of Africa) but see national liberation as a first step towards it. So, first national freedom and then building up of a Pan-African alliance, in my opinion.
Postcolonialism Thank you very much!! I had the same opinion after a second reading of the chapter.
Great to know. When I have some free time I will try to record a video addressing this particular issue in "The Wretched of the Earth."
Thanks for exposing a very crucial facet. I had missed it in the expanded version. By the way, could you put together a similar take on Early and Later Marx and its implications for intellectual pursuits? Thanks.
Thank you so much. That would be quite an undertaking and would require a lot of preparation. I will let you know when I attempt it.

@@masoodraja sir would u plz tell me,,,what fanon says about returning to precolonial time?
@@mehakkamran9093 Thank you. I honestly do not know. It’s been years since I read his works. I would suggest reading him carefully to seek the answers.
@@masoodraja okay sir🌸
lucky are your students Dr Masood..thank you
Thank you
Most of the course outlines, here in Pakistan , opt to start with Said's sometimes not even mentioning Fanon , while teaching Post colonial literature. What's your take on the importance of Fanon 's work in contemporary times.
I find his work to be extremely significant and have never taught a course on postcolonialism without Fanon.
Hi Sir please let us know in which Fanon's book does native intellectual and decolonisation fall ?
Thank you. It would be in The Wretched of the Earth.
@@masoodraja thank you so much Sir
@@farwabatool5131 You are welcome.
Good to learn
Thank you.
Love you sir 😍
Thank you.
Thankyou for pointing out this very clear distinction. A chapter in my these will be to look at how voluntrists ( as a new firm of so called development tool) are indeed "white saviours". I argue using said that they have the same tropes such as "othering" that the colonialists did and later the development discourse as such.
But to break down the mentality of the white saviour and his/her so called victim who needs saving/help/needs to be development I plan to use Fanon.
And that is why I am very THANKFUL to you for pointing out the distinction between earlier and later Fanon.
😘
Also at this point I am convinced I need to acknowledge you in my work/thesis Really. I have benefitted so much from your videos. I avnnot even Beginn to tell you how. Thankyou so much
Thank you so much. I am delighted to know that this has been helpful to you. I had started this venture, on the insistence of my wife who thinks I am good at explaining concepts:), with a hope that these materials will be of done use to people. Your comment proves that my that hope is now a reality!!! I am grateful!!
Thank you so much. I am honored!
there is no mention of the arab in bswm, there is in the north african sydrome though, but that is another book.
Yes, it is in the Wretched of the Earth.
@@masoodraja that chapter is in toward an african revolution, it was written during his time in lyon. it might have been published as an article earlier. thanks for your vids
Great!! Yes, I am just encouraging people to read all of Fanon before making their mind about his work. I teach the excerpts from both the books and have read all of his work. But not in French, only on translation.
@@masoodraja have you tried the latest edited volume of essays, Alienation and Freedom?
Edited By Robert Young? Not yet. I will probably get it next month.
