    I don't know why, but I really like the idea that all those balls were put in that truck completely loose like that. I mean, obviously that makes the most sense since youre just going to dump them in the water.
    It just seems really funny

      +Jeremiah Brand that's because you're looking for innuendos where there are none he just literally finds it funny that the balls were just dumped into the truck like that, no boxes or containers, just...balls. It is kinda funny.

    Wouldn't it be smarter to use white or light colored balls? They don't become as hot as black ones, and would heat the water less causing less evaporation, I would think.

      Lemonz1989 The main goal isn't to stop evaporation, that's just a happy bonus. Sunlight reacts with the chemicals in the water creating a hazard, so they use the black balls to absorb and block the sun.
      I imagine that white/light colored balls might also be too bright for anything like planes or whatever.

    • @Lemonz1989
      @Lemonz1989 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Altrior Oh, ok. The article that sent me to this video was talking mainly about saving 300 million gallons of water, and it just seemed a bit counterintuitive.
      I went searching for more info after I read your comment, and it seems the main point was to stop the formation of bromate and stop biological matter from forming in and entering the reservoir.

  • @VivaFrei
    @VivaFrei 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I'm no scientist, but shouldn't those balls be white (or light color) so they retain less heat from the sunlight? Being black/dark, I would imagine they will get hotter than would white, yellow or pink balls, generating more water evaporation… Am I wrong?

    • @driverstorer
      @driverstorer 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      ***** my FIRST assumption.. however because they are black, and heat up, they will (should, maybe.. IDK) prevent mold, slime and other algies from forming on them.

    • @donnyestee
      @donnyestee 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      ***** probably there's a whole team of people smarter than you who thought about these balls. Pretty sure they're black for a good reason.

    • @scottycatman
      @scottycatman 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I read an article saying they don't want chlorine in the water to react with sunlight to create bromate, a suspected carcinogen. That could be related to the color; possibly they would rather have the balls absorb light rather than reflect/refract it into the water.
      I read only a couple articles and that's the best I can come up with.

    • @techscull4091
      @techscull4091 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** They can become an aviation hazard if they reflect too much light. The materials used on the ball seem to reflect some light and the size of the ball may also consider the ball as a partial insulator. It is like covering your window with a thick piece of black cardboard.

    I think it will take more than balls to save the situation on the long term.
    I was in a french high school and back then we were already talking about the problem with water consumption in hot states in the US (especially Las Vegas).
    Didn't we have enough time to figure something out instead of balls since that time? (I mean ... french school... basic... old books....).
    Changing way of life, sensibilization, move away some industries using or polluting lots of water.

    It is a nice initiative. there is a big technical error in here. Instead of black ball , it should be white reflective ball. Now the black ball will absorb a enormous amount of heat and that will be transfered to water and water will started to evaporate even in higher rate. Therefore it will be a failed project ! Good initiative with crazy process

    @Kenazzle That is not how it works. It is not like reservoir evaporation is a significant contributor to global rainfall, nor is the water cycle localized in such a way that the rain that falls in one location is the water that evaporated from that location.

  • @skywinder1
    @skywinder1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I would have used white balls.....the black ones will absorb more heat and warm the water up and create an evaporation cycle that would cause the balls to shift about and allow water to evaporate off of the surface of the balls....white balls would reflect more sunlight and prevent the surface temperature of the water from getting high enough to cause evaporation. Plus black plastic usually denotes recycled plastic from the manufacturer where heating previously used plastic cause the black coloration whereas white plastic indicates virgin plastic with fresh colorant added. Used plastic may not be as stable and you might have a break down issue that could contaminate the water.

    The poor shade ball @ 0:24. It came a long way with it's brothers to fulfill an important task, only to be snatched up by the "man in the black shirt" and denied his destiny right at the last moment. Shade ball @ 0:24 was always cocky, and the other balls tried to warn him, but he ended up paying the price. As he was picked from the pack and hoisted high in the air, he watched his brothers roll by and immediately regretted ignoring their advice. "Why didn't I listen to them? Oh whyyy?" The other shade balls splashed into the water and glanced back to their fallen comrade. Their orders were to never stop. It was every shade ball for himself in the final push...

      Kenazzle The impact covering this reservoir will have on cloud formation is essentially zero. The only freshwater sources that create any meaningful cloud coverage are the great lakes, and even those have negligible impact. Oceans create the vast majority of our clouds and dictate our weather patterns, not water reservoirs.
