Superb movie on all levels. Right for its time (1974) & right now (2019). Yes. Mr. Bronson left us with the desire to be free from fear. Final thought, Mr. Gardebia's portrayal of a NYC Inspector who lived by the book was spot on. Look at the contract. Both men trying to fight evil with honest intentions, but approaching from opposite directions. Loved the acknowledgement by Gardenia of the young Officer's staying in his lane. He knew the significance of the gun, but patiently waited for a superior to take over. His respect for his limits is rewarded by the Inspector making it a point that he will not forget him. A good boss rewards his men. 🇺🇸
This was an excellent movie for it's day. It caused a lot of stir when released, and crowds in theaters were cheering him. Great looks of the old NYC, dirty and dangerous, but full of character, before it was all sold off to Corporate America.
This was a great movie ! Vincent Gardenia was from Bensonhurst . He played a great part . I met him back in the day . They actually named a street after him . I believe 17th Ave in Bensonhurst Brooklyn where he was from is now called Vincent Gardenia Avenue
For those of you non-NY'ers or those too young to remember, these movies were hugely popular in NYC back in the day. The scenes are pretty much close to the way NYC looked before the corporations took over. Then, came Bernie Goetz, aka The Subway Shooter. To this day Bernie is a local folk hero. With the current mayor we may need Bronson again.

I remember seeing Death Wish in a theatre in the 70s as part of a double bill with the Longest Yard. Like that move, I kept thinking: “how the hell do they end this?” Perfectly. That’s how. That final “shot” says it all.
One of the most fascinating and well written parts of this movie is that Paul Kersey carries a .32 caliber Colt police positive revolver that was given to him as a gift, that's awesome writing, much cooler than him just acquiring a Smith&Wesson .38 or .357(the most common revolvers made). The attention to detail makes the film better and more realistic.
@@michaelofsc6021 Actually, no. The cartridge in question is the .32 Smith & Wesson Long, a cartridge that has never had factory-made +P loads; even if it did, the revolver Kersey used, the Colt Police Positive, would not have been strong enough to handle them.
All the times I've seen this movie, I only recently made the connection between Kersey's visit to Arizona where he saw the wild west reenactment, plus the scene in the park where he's chasing the mugger and ends up passing out from a gunshot wound after saying "Deal your hand" to the mugger, and finally the scene here where after being told to get out of town by the inspector, he says "By sundown?" In other words, seeing the wild west reenactment made him feel like a wannabe wild west gunslinger to some degree, since "Deal your hand" and "Get out of town by sundown" are expressions you'd hear in a western movie. He was doing a good job, crime was down for fear of the vigilante. Kersey's mistake was not using a different gun, leaving evidence at the scene, and not investing in a silencer.
The Mayor should be in that hospital room giving him a key to the city and asking him to come as his guest and attend a parade in his honor. But, of course, the city is NYC.
And after lying about the revolver on his report, the young Jackson Riley felt so bad about it that he moved to England, learned the guitar, changed his name to Nigel Tufnel and formed Spinal Tap with David St. Hubbins.
A remake should be in the works, nyc under mayor deblas will soon feature citizens losing their heads in times square and dems asking how could this happen

true
If only for "Do you believe in Jesus?"
The background music is awesome so sophisticated for 1974 standards

And they just got rid of the plainclothes unit this year....
