Everything we do in the weight room needs to have a direct translation and support what we do in the ring - this is especially true when it comes to strength training. Nick Longo, Strength and Conditioning Coach at Colorado State University, shares some of the concepts and techniques of strength training that have propelled throwers to NCAA Division I National Titles.
In this segment he discusses some of the fundamentals of the Olympic lifts and how, when performed properly, they will dramatically increase an athletes power and stability in the ring.

Good video, remember to keep those shoulders over the bar at the bottom position, that will make it easier getting around the knees and you will have a straighter bar path

What you say is substantiated by many top coaches. Unfortunately, in MY infinite wisdom, I thought bench press, standing press and squat were enough. So, over a five year span, my distances in the shot and discus never improved. Lately, I've started this Olympic lift training (again). I competed in Olympic lifts in high school in the 1960's. And OH MY, have I found a bunch of WEAK LINKS in my strength chain. I can't wait for Winter to end so I can get outside to see if my throws have improved. I compete in the NY Senior Games each year and managed to place 3rd in the shot and discus in 2018. That got me an invite to the Nationals in 2019 but my throws will have to REALLY improve to justify going down there. With your advice maybe I can do it. I'm going to look around to see if you have any more such videos posted.

Hi, so did your throws improve after implementing the oly lifts?

@@incorectulpolitic - It's amazing how I continue to ignore the obvious signs of my physical deterioration over the decades and still think I am the same man that I was 50 years ago. I wonder if all people do the same - think of themselves as they were at their peak of physical fitness. Even looking at my workout journal shows that my strength is still not that great and is about half of what it was at my peak. That would account for my throwing distances being half of what they used to be even though I'm using a lighter implement. One thing I am changing is dropping the repetitions of each set of an exercise and increasing the weight. I think I spent too much time just going through the motions of working out and not really pushing myself to advance in strength. I don't know if Olympic lifting is a big help but I can see some throwing improvement with increased strength. Last year, in spite of bench pressing near 150 lbs for one rep (not bad for a 75 year old guy) I still had problems doing sets of multiple pushups. When I tried to add handstands to my workouts, I found that my upper body strength was severely lacking - upper chest, arms, even wrists. So, I've got a lot of gaps in my strength that need to be filled before I see a great improvement in my throws. But, pursuing such goals is what keeps me younger than most 76 year olds.

I tried to ask around if it has Open Captions? I'd like to buy to download all throw, long jump, high jump and sprint. Does have triples jump and javelin? Relay? Pay $90 for all or each?
