The last time I saw them was 1969 at, WEST PALM BEACH "ROCK FESTIVAL". John came out on stage dressed as a Motorcycle cop. Bottles and missiles drove him off stage. It was crazy. He came out dressed normally. Every band was awesome. Rolling Stones closed on the third day.
Steppenwolf has many great songs Pusher (from Easy Rider), Snowblind Friend, Sookiee,Sookiee,Dont Step on the Grass Sam and Hey Lawdy Mama are just a few. Ive also heard some US History teachers use Monster in their class
Rock Me is actually my most listened to song by them, but Monster is truly an epic work, and I read the lyrics to it as a presentation in drama class (cute girls) as a senior in high school in 1971. It was a big hit, got me an A+, and two dates! Yes, they were still called dates in 1971. Monster is a massively underappreciated timepiece of those years, solidly in the middle of the greatest decade of pop music ever, 1965-1975.
Great insight and hey you made it work for you. And I have said it many time when people ask me the best decade of music, I say the 70's BUT if I could just pick ten years it is.........1965-1975!
This has been my favorite Steppenwolf song since I was 12 yrs old in 1972. I was fortunate to see them on their farewell tour in Las Vegas and of course this was the encore song and the highlight of the show. (It was a short lived farewell! lol)I wish it could be re-released. It's as relevant today as it was in 1970. Magic Carpet Ride is a close second.
Even though I am well aware that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is about as relevant as a 23-year- old influencer, for some reason it still irks me that Steppenwolf and Jethro Tull are not in there.
"Rock me" was a top 10 hit and it was climbing the charts until WLS in Chicago and other stations pulled it because the BIG BOSS at WLS saw Mike Monarch pretend to blow his nose on the American flag in the lobby, otherwise it would've probably hit the top 5. "Monster" is a masterpiece that speaks of the times back in 1969 but also still today, probably even MORE now! They should blast that song over loudspeakers in every major city in this country...

That had to be great!
They were wearing suits to represent "authority" that's why they had them on.
