Good to see you keeping busy Cory. I have a habit of saving all my scrap for holiday coasters, luggage tags and key fobs. Scrap is never a loss when it's converted into product. 💰💰😏
I start by taking a close look at both sides of the hide. Are there any tears, thin spots, range marks or holes that aren’t suitable? I mark those with a white leather pen so I don’t use those areas by mistake. Sometimes holding the leather up to the light will expose holes or cuts you didn’t notice earlier. Great video and conversation 👍
That’s a great point and area I didn’t touch on. Luckily with these sides they were grade A and had very few areas of concern outside of some minor blemishes around the edges. Wish I would have added that point too. If there are scars and thinned out areas, that further adds to the “not useable” portions. Thanks for the input, agree 100%
@ just came across this, google opticutter Free cutlist optimizer and they have an online tool for plotting the layout of your pieces. Might be handy if you have a lot of pieces or straps to get for a project
I subscribed to your channel because it's really entertaining to watch you make leather crafts and also makes us all learn something. I'm really looking forward to seeing your new wallets.
Hey Corey thanks for the content. I am in Australia and have been leather crafting around two years. Still don't make money all these little areas like buying square feet that don't exist suck right? Good to see you persevere here it will pay dividends in the end. Thanks again I appreciate your effort. You have two learning curves right? Leather business savvy and TH-cam content making. No wonder you don't have any hair! (Neither do I its overrated).
Thanks so much for your input. Greetings from the other side of the world!! I’ve been very fortunate in my Etsy shop luckily but also still undervalue my work and trying to get that corrected this year.. I am more surprised than anyone with me starting a TH-cam channel. A buddy of mine told me to just start filming and putting videos together and sure enough I really started to enjoy it. Hoping to learn from mistakes and organically grow this channel similar to my Etsy shop and leatherwork in general. Been a fun ride and just love making and creating… lots of ideas and projects in the works. Thanks for the encouragement! I’m 2 decades in to baldness and that would take up more time that I don’t have as well..I’m to the point now where I wish I didn’t even have to shave it!! Cheers sir!
It was a new one I tried from a buckle guy. It’s the Wheat color Newbury South Street side… they are unbelievable and will certainly try a few other colors. Reminds me a lot of Horween Chromexcel in Natural but a tad darker
You also need to include, time to make, shop supplies and utilities to get your cost. Then profit on that. So if you're only basing your quotes on leather cost you're well and truly much further behind the eight ball than you think.
Oh yea. Those were all a part of the quote. This was strictly talking about the leather/cost side mistake. I will be paid for my time, other supplies just takes some of the profit out of my pockets due to my misfire… thanks for your input
I have to sub to get you over that 1k! I have been trying to get there forever so congrats. I’ve never had an order like that but if I ever do, this video will pop into my head. I appreciate the transparency. You’re pushing forward and the vids are real without any fluff. Good luck with the project and the channel.
Gained a new one today from me. I appreciate you reaching out. I have watched a number of your videos as well and appreciate your style.. you have some big video numbers for some of those! Keep grinding, I think folks can appreciate guys like you and I who don’t have any clue about the algorithm or SEO but are genuine and just appreciate the craft. I had a hard time searching for that when I started out so wanted to try to create it. I appreciate the support and will return my support for you and your channel. Keep it up!
Looks like 1K today. KUDOS! Give us some follow up on how to make the most of your scraps. I really wanna see you make your money back from the miscalculation.
I DID! it isnt much for massive channels and full time creators but for a guy who uses a cell phone and does it all by himself, it really was somewhat special. Oh Im gonna be just fine. I actually had a batch of keychains help cover and it should only. I appreciate the support and will look for some more projects to collect some of that messy math I coughed up!?
I wasted money so you dont have to!!! make this a new practice, if you like profits selling your leather goods. Anyone ever overlook this and make costly mistake like me?
I hope you still make a bit of money for all your work. Gonna take a lot of leather to make 25 portfolios. That belly leather isn’t going to work the same as the leather along the spine. Buying “bends” may seem more expensive, but it’s all usable
I always see them and the cost never seems to make sense but it has to be because it’s mostly useable… I bought some Buttero in a 7sq ft bend and used almost every inch!!! Way more costly tho
Problem is most people have zero understanding how much "useable" leather comes in a side. On a grade A hide, tanneries figure 80-85% is "useable". That does not mean prime, good leather. That still accounts for the belly and other less desirable parts. Off the bat you lose 4 sq feet off a 20 sq ft side. Then you lose the area of the belly, which is suitable for WAY less projects, so there is another at least 20%. Odd shaped hides also add more loss, because big projects, need a large area to be cut from. In your case you are probably losing close to 50% and maybe more, of the sq footage for your target projects. You can use the scraps later for other things possibly, but that doesn't help with this order. Rule of thumb, especially with projects that need bigger pieces, is 50% or less of a side will yield the area you need.
Much appreciated! I knew of some waste but man I didn’t think it through when using for such a big order. I priced them by what I would sell 1 for and that’s where my main problem came in. I do have some good uses for the scraps and some good cutting still left on maybe 1/3 side. I made back quite a bit from some keychains I did which helped and a few other smaller projects lined up to recoup my stupidity…along with a few dollars.. thanks for the shout
@@reedyrivergoods A side is a cheaper way to pay by the sq foot. But it's only good when you can make use of the waste. Smaller projects can use up scrap and become profitable. But if you only made a few items to sell, it would be wiser to buy bends, if you can't use up the scraps. Each of us need to figure out what works best for our situation. In this case, you need the order to pay for all of the leather you had to order to cover the project, and the scrap left over is just bonus money for those sales. Hard to turn back time, but in the future, and in line with how you price this item, you need to keep this lesson learned in mind. If someone orders two dozen of these in the future, you need to have your price high enough to cover the 50% scrap of the sides you will need to order. Then all the left over leather is paid for and makes more profit on the items cut from the scraps. If you don't account for the scrap, you will be tied up in those sides until the items from the scraps sell. If this were shell cordovan, you would be bankrupt from this mistake. Be happy it was no worse then it was.

I am seeing a much bigger return in scraps and leftovers than anticipated… helps ease the mind a bit
That is extremely helpful my friend I appreciate you
Thanks for the shout… glad you took something from it

From Buckleguy, not from a buckle guy…haha
Learning leather craft can be a struggle. Gotta love it
I agree completely. The best part is that it generally only happens once… I consider it paying for the education

@@reedyrivergoods🎉🎉🎉1k!!
Interior and lining could be made of thin veg tan and dyed / stained to match
Not a bad idea. This is a little hefty for the application to start and would have to be probably 1ounce max
