Compact trucks need to come back. Not a lot of personal use with full size trucks if all you need is a smaller one. Everyone can thank the EPA for doing away with them, not to mention many base models of vehicles cost 5x more than older models. The manufacturers make their money back through parts. Anyone who has owned a s10, ranger, or tacoma knows that feeling of having a utility vehicle for hauling light loads and pulling a trailer for lawnmowing equipment, etc.

It’s sad because some cheaper trucks came out, but not for North America. A lot has to do with the safety and regulation, but they can make a truck that’s up to code a less money, it I feel it’s been very greedy. They say it won’t sell and blah blah, it will, some just need a truck that can do the work with out it being big and everything… etc etc. It’s sad.

Great point. I have a 6 year old Honda Civic as my daily commuter, and a 2001 Chevy truck I’ve had forever for around town and Home Depot runs etc. The amount of $70,000+ 4 door trucks that get terrible gas mileage I see everyday making 100 mile round trips without carpooling is so wasteful in SO many ways. I’d like to think people were smarter with their money but what am I thinking…. Small sub $30,000 cars that get 30+ mpg make so much sense. Cheap to insure, cheap to own, cheap to drive. I’d love to see the low cost compact truck market come back too. I kinda want one. Then maybe sell my old Chevy.

Sambar is rear-engine (behind the axle) so it's slightly more accessible since you can get at it both through the bed and by folding down the rear bumper, and it's a 4 cyl instead of a 3. The mid-engine ones are cool too though. I'd never buy one with the front engine.

If you get one from South Korea the steering wheel will be on the correct side of the vehicle for right-side-of-the-road drive countries, like the US. They have been variously badged as Daewoo or GM Labo trucks (or Damas vans, if you like your payload enclosed). Both designs recently purchased by JJ Motors for conversion to an electric model currently being sold here; can't wait to swap my LPG model for an electric one.

Looking to get another mini truck for work. You kind of have to decide if it's going to be a show piece or a work piece.

  • @Liberty4Ever

I purchased a 1996 4WD Daihatsu Hijet mini truck from a Japanese auction site. I paid $265, plus $1935 to ship it to the eastern seaboard of the United States. The US has a 25% protectionist import tariff on light trucks (the Chicken Tax) but I only paid 25% of $265 so it wasn't too bad. My state and local taxes were based on the $265 commercial invoice price as well, so I paid $15 for a one time inspection (basically checking paperwork to see if it's stolen) and less than $45 for taxes and registration for the next year and a half.
The truck is not in bad shape considering it was a Japanese farm truck. I'm catching up on maintenance while doing some upgrades. I have almost $6000 in it now and after new tires, 2" lift kit with progressive springs, a Monstaliner truck bed liner paint job inside and out and a double DIN Android stereo with a backup camera I'll probably be around US$8000.
Getting insurance in the US is a bit of a pain but I'm paying around $400 per year for the Hijet.
I get 31 MPG in the Hijet and I drive it wound out trying to accelerate with in town traffic. Not bad for a 4WD pickup truck.
6:45 - Importing into the US, the only time car parts can be placed in the exported vehicle is if the vehicle is shipped in a shipping container, which is very expensive. For a RORO (roll on, roll off), only the bare vehicle can be shipped.

I'm an Expat living in Japan. These mini trucks and cars have their place over here. I can understand having one back in the UK as there are handy and get good mileage. One thing that nobody ever talks about is the driver size. I am 183 cm tall, and you really need to be 175 or under to be able to drive this comfortably. I can barely drive it and only borrow a truck when I need to make a haul to the dump.

Almost 20 years ago I fell in love with the K(?) cars size. I’m in Alaska and it was 20k for a container to Seattle with 6 or so in it but at that time they weren’t road legal here. The price you showed seems like a great deal maybe source the parts from somewhere closer.
(Not that they are made there but they could have that vehicle in a nearby country) they are great vehicles and a sensible investment for transportation.

I bought a 94 Daihatsu, Hijet, with 4wd, air conditioning, and a scissors lift dump, eight years ago. I bought it to push a snow plow. For that purpose it made more sense than the ATVs and UTVs folks use. Heater and a closed cab were the clincher on that. All in, with home made bumpers to carry the plow, and act as outriggers when I use the scissors lift as a work platform. And three sets of tires, and $3500 for an electro/hydraulic snow plow, I’m at $13,000. If I buy regular spark plugs at the parts house, and the plug wire set for a six cylinder, and change teh ends a bit, I can do a tune up for around $100. Downside for most folks will be not having enough mechanical knowledge to do their own work, which will drive the cost with Japanese parts upto around $300.

My son sent me a picture of one he saw today, in Texas. He talked to the owner and they really liked it saying it had a 10 gallon tank, and got about 50 miles to the gallon. He is thinking about trying to get one for himself. I saw where Georgia says that they do not meet U.S. safety standards, and will not allow them to be registered for use in their State, so the people that have them are not allowed to drive them. Owners are trying to get lawyers, and get a ruling in the courts. I remember when Volkswagon beetles use to get pushed around on the roads when meeting or being passed by big trucks and wonder if these would have the same problem.

The Daihatsu 80 series was manufactured in Italy by Piaggio, as the Porter through 2019 or 2020. They had the distinct advantage, of being able to have engine selections not available in the JDM Daihatsu Hijet version, with gas and diesel versions of upto 1500cc. That would be my look for in Greece. I think several of the Japanese manufacturers had similar arrangements with EU partners for the EU Market. You may find information on Wikipedia by looking for a JDM truck, and then following a link to the European version.

    • @lookship
      @lookship  ปีที่แล้ว

You can. A company in Japan fabricates a few different frames. Would be much cheaper to make one/have one made overe here though.

Where was it you got the insurance price from? I've been looking around to get UK insurance quotes and been struggling to find anyone who will even recognise half the license plates I put in. Those that do think it's 1.3L not 650cc in a Hijet.

So with that i;ll probably get a Nice Low Miles JDM Kai-Truck with around 600BHP [Maybe 60Hp]. Great Vid Bud i;m down in South Wales so if down here Call in for Cuppa.
