I Loved the Renault 5! Me and my school mates would beg my Mum to drive her (1977 model) around roundabouts twice on the way home because we loved how it would lean so much, other car drivers most likely weren't as impressed as we were.
I accidentally dented mine by leaning on it 🤦 it needs welding at the bottom of the a pillar but I do t want to take the windscreen out incase the car falls to bits 🤣
Hi Steph and everyone reading! French guy here, and happy owner of a 1986 1.4 model, and I'm glad you liked it! I personnally don't have any issues with the seats as I've taken the car across France in one day in December. I find them very soft and comfy. However, the pedal position is a bit offset and having to change gears a lot, especially in traffic, can end up being a little hard on the left leg. But overall, I love it and the 1.4 has a good amount of torque and will do 100 mph. Huge fun :)
Back in 1980 I had the basic Renault 5L with the gear stick “in the dashboard” as per the Renault 4. It had an 845cc engine as per the 4 not 792 as Steph says in her video. It was a brilliant car. So economical and comfortable too. I was a lot younger then, but didn’t have any back trouble due to the seats. It was a 1975 model, but I bought it from my uncle who lived in the Isle of Man, so it had to be re registered fir the UK. In those days they gave the ref letter of the year it was imported so mine had a ‘V’ plate - no ‘Q’ plates in those days. The gearbox was sweet as a nut to use. Definitely a car that got away, that would be such a rare classic today..
What a lovely little car. I bought a Renault Le Car brand-new in 1980 on Canada's West Coast. It was the older(original) model. I drove it around Vancouver and down to Seattle. a car I should not have sold. Your video brought back wonderful memories.

Renault really did get the styling right with the 5, way ahead of its time, yet not weird or flashy like Citroen, and it still looks fresh today! Thank you for showing us around :-)
The nicest 5 I ever drove was a Monaco. 1.7 litre engine, sports suspension from the 5 Turbo, leather seats, electric windows. Quick and superbly comfortable. I'd love to find one now.
@@idriveaclassic I THINK they were all gold. Or brown. Sold as the 5 Baccara across the rest of Europe. The GTX got the engine and suspension, but didnt get the acreage of Gallic vache inside!
Great review Steph I had a 1996 N registered 5 Campus one of the last made. Mine had a 1.4 fuel injection engine the same as fitted to the Megane . It was a great handling nippy little car 👍 The two holes in the middle of the dashboard were air vents on higher spec models
Another great review Steph. As you correctly guessed the small hole houses a click from TL spec upwards. GTS/GTL would have gained centre air vents in those top centre holes. Glove box and plastic door caps etc all feature further up the range.

Ours was the three door with the hidden door handles! Would love one again miss her so much
Lovely car nice colour. Joseph Lloyd reviewed one last year and he loved it too. These were lovely in red, white, silver and the metallic brown of the Baccara. It is really refreshing to see body coloured door caps and pillars again nowadays everything has to be covered in plastic. Fabulous Steph thanks.
When I was growing up in rural Texas, there was a guy who had a tan 5 (yes, a Le Car) and whenever I saw it I couldn't help but think it looked like one of those runts of the automotive world (like my uncle's Mitsubishi/Plymouth Colt). As I've gotten older, I've come to appreciate these little cars and really enjoyed this video. Didn't Renault make a 5 Gordini as well? That might be the one I would want. Also, Steph looks in decent nick to me, though I'm probably at least a decade older than her!
Cool. Yes in the UK it was called Gordini, because Sunbeam owned the name ‘Alpine’. Look for a Renault 5 Alpine or a Renault 5 Alpine Turbo. They are still there, not cheap though.
I remember seeing the Le Cars around when I was a kid. They stopped selling them in the U.S. after about 1984 so it is extremely rare to see one today. The dash on the one in this test reminds me of an 80s Toyota MR2.
My parents had a 1976 Renault 5 until 1992 or so, used by my mom. The dashboard was padded and ribbed and looked quite strange to me, being very young at the time. I remember the seats were very, very soft. My dad at the time drove Volvo 240s with such luxuries as air con and power steering nad only drove the Renault if there wasn’t any alternative. He loathed the steering which made it harder to park than the big Volvo! Very reliable, never gave any trouble. Nice review, there’s still one of these regularly parked in a fast food restaurant nearby.
First car I drove as a teenager. It was my grandfathers. Sadly, it was so knackered, he just gave it for scrap. Really enjoyed the interior tour - the layout in my grandfather's was identical, but in beige, so felt really nostalgic watching this. Thank you.
I would absolutely love one of these! I currently drive a Clio 2 (as I wanted something fairly reliable as a first car) and a 5 seems like the perfect thing to transition into classics! It's just such a beautiful car... Although I'm not sure if I prefer the looks of the Renault 5 or the Peugeot 205
I've got a Clio II as well, but I used to have a 5! The 5 was more reliable than the Clio, and cheaper to run, as I did all the repairs & servicing myself.

Great review as usual Steph! My first car was a renault 5 gts 1988, a step up from the campus, with a 1.4 engine and pop up sunroof, I took my mates everywhere in it and it was such fun to drive. I kept it for 2 years, putting over 30000 on the clock, I part exchanged for a fiesta xr2 89, but thats another story........
Cracking review Steph. Only experience of a R5 was a turbo model that a work collegue used to pick me up in, let's just say we were never late for work!
Lovely car. Owned one of there J632OUE I believe was the registration from 1999 until 2004. Very reliable and rarely had any problems with it. There was no rust on the bodywork what so ever. The next car I brought was from the same garage I had originally got the Renault from so they landed up having it back from me as part exchange. It was only on the forevourt a couple of days and it was snapped up. Was sad to see it go. Great video again Steph
Lovely video. I had a '89 Renault 5 GTR as my first car. It even had remote controlled door locks and power windows! The Campus in this video is kind of a 'stripped down' basic version, sold only in the last years alongside the Clio. Lots of trim is left out; hence no glove box door and very basic trim. Those two odd 'cigarette pack' holes, they actually were adjustable vents in the regular Supercinq. Would've loved to have a Baccara.
My granny in France had a 5, 3-door with an auto box, and she kept it in a little garage every night, so this gave me of nostalgia 😍. We'd all pile into it when we went to visit her. It certainly wasn't in as good a shape as this one!
@@idriveaclassic Back in the day, my father had a 16 TL, TS then a GTX. The last one he let me drive as I was a mature 20 year old. Such a smooth drive and fast in it's day. I loved the column change.
We drove one from Southern Ontario to Saskatchewan with three people in it. A bean bag chair in place of the back seat meant no stopping for the night, there was always a place to sleep. My Dad had always a taste for unusual cars in the seventies and eighties.
As an 18yo and the proud owner of a renault 5 super 1.4 with injection 5 speed. Its my first car and i love it. It has been cheap economical and has been very reliable. And for an old car i moves prety fast because its quite light. I love it. Greate video.
I had one of these as my first car, a 1993 3dr Campus Prima, mega basic spec not even the rear wiper, and this brought back some memories like the funny placed wiper stalk and that both indicator dash lights flash no matter which way you're turning! It's interesting you say the engine's quiet- mine was quite loud as most OHV engines were, when I moved onto my next car, a Citroen ZX (another car you should definitely review in the future) I could never tell if the engine was on by comparison as it was so much quieter.
It always looked to me that the Clio shared the same basic dash architecture (a friend of mine bought a Clio when I had my 5, so I was able to make a comparison)

Welcome to Halifax! I had a 5 in the early 90s, and bought it at the Enterprise rentacar on the right as you came round the corner at King Cross. One of my favourite cars. I'd agree with everything you said.
Cassette player on a 5 campus in the 1980's would have cost extra... the clio was supposed to replace the 5 but it soldiered on though the clio had belts for 3 passengers in the back... heater vents in the middle, philips cassette player with remote controls on the steering column and AUX input (handy for portable cd players)... and the clio was a little wider too... though the current day clio is almost as big as the renault 19 was inside... Renault 5 is basically a French metro in a way... a car they just couldn't kill off... highly likely there's as many 5 owners in france as metro owners in the UK.
Wow thats brought back memories, my dad had a 5 door campus in red - identical to that one. It was a 1990 on a H plate. Was handed down to me as my 1st car. Tailgate used to let water in when it rained, remember him opening the boot and empty out the 2 paint trays he kept in there to catch the water! Thanks for the video 😁
Thank you, that really brought back memories! I did a lot of miles in my E reg 3 door and she rarely let me down. You’re right about the seats though, Renault petale style seats in the posher models were lovely, I had them in my 11.
Hahaha. But no, these openings are not meant for cigarette boxes. On the continental, left hand driven, versions this dashboard is for the more luxury versions. The openings then are used for adjustable ventilation grills. The glove compartment then has a lid. And indeed the other small opening is for a clock.
I only drove one of these once, a 1986 model with the 5 speed gearbox and I guess that car had something wrong with the linkage because the gear change was absolutely horrendous, I never knew if I was putting it in 1st, 3rd or 5th due to how sloshy the box was and how near to each other the gears were. But otherwise was a neat little machine.
I used to have a Renault 5 Campus, I absolutely loved this car! It was so simple mechanically & easy to service. Mine had the 'hidden' doorhandles though.
A great little car - the R5 was spacious with great handling, economy and such a sweet engine especially in 1108 and 1397 form. Becoming rare now. A great feature, thank you.
I’m lucky enough to own a low mileage 3 door 1.4 Auto that one very careful lady owned and I love driving it . Still very French very comfortable and really rare these days. Everyone loves it and it’s great fun to drive. Steering is heavy at low speeds but the 1.4 is nippy and cheap to run . I’ve had a Mk1 five which was great but the series two is just as good in fact I had to use i5 as a daily driver for a while (although not having ABS was a bit scary )it was a great little run around. Thanks for a great review on this brilliant little French icon.

Loved this. My first car was 1990 G reg 5TR. It was red too but was a 3 door with the recessed door catches. Being the TR it was much the same with the luxury of a glovebox lid, a quartz clock and wheel trims. I did long journeys and found it comfortable. To start a 5 you pull the choke leaver up to the top. Pump twice on the throttle then push the leaver down 1 inch. It then starts every time.
Hi Steph, Many thanks for another interesting and informative car review. I bought my first Renault 5 a TL model in 1977 when I started my driving school, it proved to be reasonably reliable and easy to drive once used to the floor mounted gearchange (the original through the dashboard design was better) however it would have been a bit too oddball for most learner drivers. I kept it for 3 years and covered about 130,000 miles in that time. I had it converted to run on LPG after it was 18 months old on which it ran very well indeed, smoother and quieter. I bought my second Renault 5 a GTL in 1979, also a reliable car. Thank you once again for the car reviews, I look forward to the next. Kind regards, Bob.
I had a F reg Renault 5 Campus back in the early 90s. Very odd and quirky when compared to something run of the mill like a Fiesta or Nova but that's what I loved about it. Mine had 5 speed and the centre vents but was definitely still a Campus.
Thanks Steph. I can see why these were popular as they're a nice car. Interesting and fun dashboard too. I think the two rectangular pockets in the upper dash would be outlets for the air conditioned models.
Really interesting video, Stef. Lovely car, too. The body and paint work look great. The few little dents and dings could be dealt with easily. Some might even pull out with a sink plunger. Amazing how well that works. We didn't see the Super 5 here, but we did get the 5, badged as Le Car. We also got the Renault Alliance/Encore, which was a rebadged Renault 9. The original Le Car was cute, and definitely quirky. That is the only car I have heard of with differing wheel bases between the two sides. Unfortunately rust ate Renault cars faster than body shops could install new panels. For me, they also suffered from a severe lack of interior room. I got stuck in an Alliance in the showroom when I was looking at one. That said, I did know a few who had them, and until the rot killed them, they are nifty little runabouts.

Thought you might find it funny in Washington state USA we don't see many Renault's of any model but the way I've always heard the name pronounced is to say the ult at the end. First time I heard it pronounced correctly was on Top Gear. ( I'm a Jag guy myself) 2005 XKR coupe. Keep up the good work. Ryan
When Renault entered the US market in the 1950's they pronounced the ault but when AMC began selling them in the mid 1970's they slowly started pronounce it as the French do. By the early 80's it was all "Ren-oh."
Great video! My aunt had a brand new R5 Campus identical to this one in 1989 which her then-husband bought for her after she passed her driving test. Not long afterwards, it ended up being swapped for a year old R5 1.7 GTX, which was much more to her liking, due to it being fast and very well-specced. She put the personalised number plate A1 AML on it (AML being her initials), which she subsequently sold to an Aston Martin owner for a lot of money :) Love what you've done with you hair, by the way ^^
In the USA the Le Car was sold from the late 70's to mid 80s at American Motors Corp (AMC) Dealerships Renault pulled out in the mid 80's and Chrysler Corp bought AMC who also owned the Jeep brand, they kept Jeep and dropped the rest. I drove a blue 1975 AMC Gremlin for a few years that was a weird car, it would be prefect for your Channel. To bad it was too worn out I ended up selling it to a wrecking yard in 1987 before I moved to Iceland.

My first car was a Renault 5. A 1988 1.1 TL 3 door in white. I paid £1,100 for it at 9 years old and around 80,000 miles if I remember correctly. Brilliant car. Wish I had kept it. I would absolutely love another.
As this is one of the most basic 5s i've seen, the two upper pockets are for where the heating vents would be and the one besides the heater panel is for the analog/digital clock. So they are put there just so it is something instead.

I learned to drive in one of those, the Diesel version, the 1.4 GTD - being the GT nothing of Gran Tourismo but rather a noisy and sluggish engine with 4 gears. The Campus in Portugal and Spain were fitted with a rather square and cheap dashboard used primarily in the Renault Express. Petrol engines started with the 1.0 "Cléon" engine with roots in the R4, R5 and even the 8 and 6. That one is even more special with RHD.
Wow, Scotts of Mottingham, I'm writing this a few hundred yards from where they used to be. A teeny tiny main dealer now unfortunately a funeral parlour. I wonder how she made it up to Yorkshire ? The five is another of those cars that used to be everywhere but now rarely seen. I had one briefly as a company car in the mid eighties, can't remember the model but remember it was really gutless, maybe a 998 cc ? 😯
Aww this takes me back. I've never driven one but my friend's mum used to drive us to tennis lessons every Saturday in Eanie, the E reg Renault 5 Campus, back around 1992. The little 1.1 seemed to quite happily do 80 with 4 folk on board. Love the ski jump glovebox too. You'd probably get a pair of lady's leather gloves in there but not much else. You'd have to name it Reggy the Renault due to its, ahem, reg.
Great video Steph, really enjoyed seeing one of these again! I’d forgotten all about the 5, but certainly remember seeing it everywhere back in the 80s and 90s. Looking at the Super, you can definitely see the design language that evolved into the Clio. I remember the Clio arriving in 1990 - there was a small Renault dealership just found the corner from us, they had one in canary yellow on the forecourt, and gave me and my brother loads of posters and merchandise - probably hoping our parents would buy one! 😂
my close friend is currently restoring one of these with his grandad, he's been working on It for years, can't wait for this summer to enjoy it with him!!
Another sweet little car we didn't see in Aus. Really nice looking inside and out. The dashboard is fascinating, those centre 'ciggie packet' holders look like where vents would be on a better equipped model. 😊✨👍
Great vid again Steph. Those holes in the dash are vents - it is missing it’s vent flaps (and maybe the pipes feeding them?) I’ll check my brochures but am pretty sure all cars had vents there.
The campus was so basic it made do without the central air vents, and the lower hole next to the heater controls is where a clock would have been fitted. The wiring for it is actually in situ.
Ah, ok, sorry. weird to leave out the vents thou. My 89 auto has them and the clock. Does it have no pas? My auto is really well equipped for the time - elec windows and central locking. Drives nice too. Love them.
My mistake about the vents, just seen a 1.1 tl on autotrader also without vents - weird!! By the way that’s going for £4K !!! Doesn’t look any better than yours really !! Good Luck - am sure someone will snap it up for £1800!!

Love this - had a C reg R5 when I was a postgraduate student in the mid 90s. it was fantastic right up until it blew up on the M56. Still miss it.

I've got a Clio II as well, but I used to have a 5! The 5 was more reliable than the Clio, and cheaper to run, as I did all the repairs & servicing myself.
The area that you described as the width of two cigarette packets if I remember rightly was two centre vents on mums 1.4 auto 1990 H Prima auto spec

Great review as usual Steph! My first car was a renault 5 gts 1988, a step up from the campus, with a 1.4 engine and pop up sunroof, I took my mates everywhere in it and it was such fun to drive. I kept it for 2 years, putting over 30000 on the clock, I part exchanged for a fiesta xr2 89, but thats another story........

Lovely car. Owned one of there J632OUE I believe was the registration from 1999 until 2004. Very reliable and rarely had any problems with it. There was no rust on the bodywork what so ever. The next car I brought was from the same garage I had originally got the Renault from so they landed up having it back from me as part exchange. It was only on the forevourt a couple of days and it was snapped up. Was sad to see it go. Great video again Steph

Lovely video. I had a '89 Renault 5 GTR as my first car. It even had remote controlled door locks and power windows! The Campus in this video is kind of a 'stripped down' basic version, sold only in the last years alongside the Clio. Lots of trim is left out; hence no glove box door and very basic trim. Those two odd 'cigarette pack' holes, they actually were adjustable vents in the regular Supercinq. Would've loved to have a Baccara.
My granny in France had a 5, 3-door with an auto box, and she kept it in a little garage every night, so this gave me of nostalgia 😍. We'd all pile into it when we went to visit her. It certainly wasn't in as good a shape as this one!

@@idriveaclassic Back in the day, my father had a 16 TL, TS then a GTX. The last one he let me drive as I was a mature 20 year old. Such a smooth drive and fast in it's day. I loved the column change.
We drove one from Southern Ontario to Saskatchewan with three people in it. A bean bag chair in place of the back seat meant no stopping for the night, there was always a place to sleep.
My Dad had always a taste for unusual cars in the seventies and eighties.
As an 18yo and the proud owner of a renault 5 super 1.4 with injection 5 speed.
Its my first car and i love it. It has been cheap economical and has been very reliable.
And for an old car i moves prety fast because its quite light.

I had one of these as my first car, a 1993 3dr Campus Prima, mega basic spec not even the rear wiper, and this brought back some memories like the funny placed wiper stalk and that both indicator dash lights flash no matter which way you're turning! It's interesting you say the engine's quiet- mine was quite loud as most OHV engines were, when I moved onto my next car, a Citroen ZX (another car you should definitely review in the future) I could never tell if the engine was on by comparison as it was so much quieter.
You can definitely see hints of the 5 in the interior of the first Clio, my mum had a 1.2 RN was a lovely little car
It always looked to me that the Clio shared the same basic dash architecture (a friend of mine bought a Clio when I had my 5, so I was able to make a comparison)

Cassette player on a 5 campus in the 1980's would have cost extra... the clio was supposed to replace the 5 but it soldiered on though the clio had belts for 3 passengers in the back... heater vents in the middle, philips cassette player with remote controls on the steering column and AUX input (handy for portable cd players)... and the clio was a little wider too... though the current day clio is almost as big as the renault 19 was inside...
Renault 5 is basically a French metro in a way... a car they just couldn't kill off... highly likely there's as many 5 owners in france as metro owners in the UK.
I would rather the 5 than a clio x

Wow thats brought back memories, my dad had a 5 door campus in red - identical to that one. It was a 1990 on a H plate. Was handed down to me as my 1st car. Tailgate used to let water in when it rained, remember him opening the boot and empty out the 2 paint trays he kept in there to catch the water! Thanks for the video 😁
My first car was a Super5 from 1986 GTL 1.4. It had remote locking and radio controls. Went everywhere in it. So spacious, even did a flat move in it.

Hahaha. But no, these openings are not meant for cigarette boxes. On the continental, left hand driven, versions this dashboard is for the more luxury versions. The openings then are used for adjustable ventilation grills. The glove compartment then has a lid. And indeed the other small opening is for a clock.
I only drove one of these once, a 1986 model with the 5 speed gearbox and I guess that car had something wrong with the linkage because the gear change was absolutely horrendous, I never knew if I was putting it in 1st, 3rd or 5th due to how sloshy the box was and how near to each other the gears were. But otherwise was a neat little machine.
I had one with linkage not set properly but was a simple fix to set correctly, well i did it lol.
I used to have a Renault 5 Campus, I absolutely loved this car! It was so simple mechanically & easy to service. Mine had the 'hidden' doorhandles though.
A great little car - the R5 was spacious with great handling, economy and such a sweet engine especially in 1108 and 1397 form. Becoming rare now. A great feature, thank you.

I’m lucky enough to own a low mileage 3 door 1.4 Auto that one very careful lady owned and I love driving it . Still very French very comfortable and really rare these days. Everyone loves it and it’s great fun to drive. Steering is heavy at low speeds but the 1.4 is nippy and cheap to run . I’ve had a Mk1 five which was great but the series two is just as good in fact I had to use i5 as a daily driver for a while (although not having ABS was a bit scary )it was a great little run around. Thanks for a great review on this brilliant little French icon.

My Granddad had a GTL and the gaps in the middle were air vents on the higher spec models. It also had a proper glove box in the passenger side.

I remember these as a kid growing up. Been in a 5 Gt Turbo when it was brand new. Had a Renault 4 for a little while in the late 90s.
Loved this. My first car was 1990 G reg 5TR. It was red too but was a 3 door with the recessed door catches. Being the TR it was much the same with the luxury of a glovebox lid, a quartz clock and wheel trims. I did long journeys and found it comfortable. To start a 5 you pull the choke leaver up to the top. Pump twice on the throttle then push the leaver down 1 inch. It then starts every time.
Hi Steph, Many thanks for another interesting and informative car review. I bought my first Renault 5 a TL model in 1977 when I started my driving school, it proved to be reasonably reliable and easy to drive once used to the floor mounted gearchange (the original through the dashboard design was better) however it would have been a bit too oddball for most learner drivers. I kept it for 3 years and covered about 130,000 miles in that time. I had it converted to run on LPG after it was 18 months old on which it ran very well indeed, smoother and quieter. I bought my second Renault 5 a GTL in 1979, also a reliable car. Thank you once again for the car reviews, I look forward to the next.

I had a F reg Renault 5 Campus back in the early 90s. Very odd and quirky when compared to something run of the mill like a Fiesta or Nova but that's what I loved about it. Mine had 5 speed and the centre vents but was definitely still a Campus.

Really interesting video, Stef. Lovely car, too. The body and paint work look great. The few little dents and dings could be dealt with easily. Some might even pull out with a sink plunger. Amazing how well that works. We didn't see the Super 5 here, but we did get the 5, badged as Le Car. We also got the Renault Alliance/Encore, which was a rebadged Renault 9. The original Le Car was cute, and definitely quirky. That is the only car I have heard of with differing wheel bases between the two sides. Unfortunately rust ate Renault cars faster than body shops could install new panels. For me, they also suffered from a severe lack of interior room. I got stuck in an Alliance in the showroom when I was looking at one. That said, I did know a few who had them, and until the rot killed them, they are nifty little runabouts.

Thought you might find it funny in Washington state USA we don't see many Renault's of any model but the way I've always heard the name pronounced is to say the ult at the end. First time I heard it pronounced correctly was on Top Gear. ( I'm a Jag guy myself) 2005 XKR coupe. Keep up the good work. Ryan
When Renault entered the US market in the 1950's they pronounced the ault but when AMC began selling them in the mid 1970's they slowly started pronounce it as the French do. By the early 80's it was all "Ren-oh."

Great video! My aunt had a brand new R5 Campus identical to this one in 1989 which her then-husband bought for her after she passed her driving test. Not long afterwards, it ended up being swapped for a year old R5 1.7 GTX, which was much more to her liking, due to it being fast and very well-specced. She put the personalised number plate A1 AML on it (AML being her initials), which she subsequently sold to an Aston Martin owner for a lot of money :)

In the USA the Le Car was sold from the late 70's to mid 80s at American Motors Corp (AMC) Dealerships Renault pulled out in the mid 80's and Chrysler Corp bought AMC who also owned the Jeep brand, they kept Jeep and dropped the rest.
I drove a blue 1975 AMC Gremlin for a few years that was a weird car, it would be prefect for your Channel. To bad it was too worn out I ended up selling it to a wrecking yard in 1987 before I moved to Iceland.

My first car was a Renault 5. A 1988 1.1 TL 3 door in white. I paid £1,100 for it at 9 years old and around 80,000 miles if I remember correctly. Brilliant car. Wish I had kept it. I would absolutely love another.
As this is one of the most basic 5s i've seen, the two upper pockets are for where the heating vents would be and the one besides the heater panel is for the analog/digital clock. So they are put there just so it is something instead.

I learned to drive in one of those, the Diesel version, the 1.4 GTD - being the GT nothing of Gran Tourismo but rather a noisy and sluggish engine with 4 gears. The Campus in Portugal and Spain were fitted with a rather square and cheap dashboard used primarily in the Renault Express. Petrol engines started with the 1.0 "Cléon" engine with roots in the R4, R5 and even the 8 and 6. That one is even more special with RHD.

Aww this takes me back. I've never driven one but my friend's mum used to drive us to tennis lessons every Saturday in Eanie, the E reg Renault 5 Campus, back around 1992. The little 1.1 seemed to quite happily do 80 with 4 folk on board. Love the ski jump glovebox too. You'd probably get a pair of lady's leather gloves in there but not much else.
You'd have to name it Reggy the Renault due to its, ahem, reg.
Great video Steph, really enjoyed seeing one of these again! I’d forgotten all about the 5, but certainly remember seeing it everywhere back in the 80s and 90s. Looking at the Super, you can definitely see the design language that evolved into the Clio. I remember the Clio arriving in 1990 - there was a small Renault dealership just found the corner from us, they had one in canary yellow on the forecourt, and gave me and my brother loads of posters and merchandise - probably hoping our parents would buy one! 😂

Those gaps on the dashboard were for vents. They must have just cheaped out on this one because it’s a Campus.
European Campus / base model 5s had the van dash which didn't have moulded spaces for the vents.
Another sweet little car we didn't see in Aus. Really nice looking inside and out. The dashboard is fascinating, those centre 'ciggie packet' holders look like where vents would be on a better equipped model. 😊✨👍

Those holes in the dash are vents - it is missing it’s vent flaps (and maybe the pipes feeding them?) I’ll check my brochures but am pretty sure all cars had vents there.

The campus was so basic it made do without the central air vents, and the lower hole next to the heater controls is where a clock would have been fitted. The wiring for it is actually in situ.
Ah, ok, sorry. weird to leave out the vents thou. My 89 auto has them and the clock. Does it have no pas? My auto is really well equipped for the time - elec windows and central locking. Drives nice too. Love them.
My mistake about the vents, just seen a 1.1 tl on autotrader also without vents - weird!! By the way that’s going for £4K !!! Doesn’t look any better than yours really !! Good
