Guitar is like a choose your own adventure novel. Each scale a different book. Turn the book around and it's the same scale but FEELS differently all because of where we started from, and end. What an amazing instrument.
I've been doing this in one solo of a song I regularly play with my band, without knowing why it sounds ok. Mind. Blown. Thank you so much, I'm gonna start using it a lot more now that I understand it better!!
WOW....I'm really a late starter here on learning lead soloing (57 yrs old :(......always played rhythm, but I have been watching many videos and this one just opened up a new world of understanding, even though it may seem simple. Thank you sooooo much for this. Your time is very appreciated!!!
Great lesson, thanks. For those that like the Blues, the Mixolydian (Dominate) scale is well worth knowing, also. It works great over a - I7 - IV7 - V7, with it's minor 7th. Just shift the pattern's root from the I, to the IV, and then the V chords. It's also used in rock, country, jazz, funk, R&B, pop, you name it. To get an idea of the mode, listen to 'Sweet Home Alabama.'
Basically, to make a minor into a major, play 3 frets back. 12th fret box = E minor pentatonic 9th fret box = E major pentatonic which is also C# minor pentatonic. Well done.
Craig Fussell resolvimg on root note is not essential for pentatonic scale it always soynds awesome thats a magic of the scale try major scale in any key you will see if you dont resolve on root note it sounds nasty-just my observation!🤔
Yooo I've been thinking about the "My Girl" thing for quite a while now before watching this XD This opened my eyes a lot about the notes I can use in a key!
Just say play the minor pentatonic of the 6th degree of the major scale - Em pentatonic over G major, for example. Keep tonal center on the G, B and D. Add the other G major scale notes and you're in Aeolian mode, like the long jam of 'Blue Sky' and other Allman Brothers songs
I can't believe other guitar channels and websites miss out on this extra resource for the pentantonic scale, and it really sounds country-esque to me. Would you say a lot of country songs use major pentatonic as its base?
The-Art-of-Guitar, what is the silver-colored bar on your first fret near the headstock? Is this something that lowers the strings to make it easier to play in C and F? If so I've been looking for something like that.
Great lesson Mike i remember my struggle over minor Major i was really confused-i wish could run into this lesson one year ago!Just a small note that if you use minor scale over major prpgression then you also wanna inject major 3ds but if you would talk about it your message would not be so clear!🤔Btw your improv is very nice bery unique bends i would love to see your blues improv over 12 bar blue or some funky progression!👌
Being intermediate, i was hoping for more. Idk maybe how to blend both in a single lick without too much contrast in sound. Seemlessly and melodicaly. Which notes sound better together while transiioning. Eg. E, g g# b sound good as a run. Hope it makes sense.
MIKE I know and play several scales every day the ones that you showed and many more. My problem is when I try to improvise blues I can't play the right notes together and bends and pull off and hammer ons to sound good. I keep being told that If I know say a lot of the blues scales that I should be able to improvise but I get stuck in the box. I end up just playing the scales like robot does it come in time knowing what sounds good and what blues scales that I can jump in and out of or is it music theory. I play all these scales every day and I am frustrated so I am learning about triads. I put in a lot of practice in at least on and off 2 to 3hours a day most days hooked to the amp and some days just playing while watching TV so that I can play with out looking at my fretting hand but I am not getting anywhere. So I went back to my instructor and I am learning other peoples songs. I want to improvise do you have any tips. I can't afford your lessons because I already pay $90 a month on lessons. My guitar teacher is a very well known guitar player and all the slide stuff in Nashville. If any one has any tips I thank you in advance. Great lesson
Is there a modern way to efficiently learn lead guitar from scratch ?....maybe with some software ? I would love to create simple solos or licks for any of my favorite songs. And I dont want to be limited by this major/minor pentatonic stuff. Maybe the key is dorian or aeolian ? And you want to use bends / slides that cannot be confined in these typical boxes. How to use double-stops - they are so important to spice things up. Maybe it would be good to turn things around. Take a nice / famous solo that already exists and map it back to a fret pattern and explain which key it is in and what features of the key it uses - showing it all in a tabulator. It is kind of frustrating....
i can do the scale but the legato is my achilles heel i can do bends and vibrato but there a time and place for that hammer on pull off fast is just my weakness
True it is the relative minor but it depends what chord you're playing over. If it's an A major then I see it as that, if it's an F# minor chord then I see it as that. Helps you play the chord tones better if you do that. :)
The shape is exactly the same exact for minor start playing it from the first note (where your first finger lays) if you wanna play major pentatonic start playing the shape from the 2nd note (where your pinky lays)
The-Art-of-Guitar best cinnamon flavored whiskey in the world btw your videos help me out a whole bunch with my learning keep up the awesome work !!! \m/
Avery Tyler My brother. I drink Fireball. Pretty much exclusively. I drink it because it’s lighter on the wallet while being effective, relatively speaking. But under no circumstances would I ever claim it’s a great whiskey. Saying that would be like saying McDonald’s has great burgers. Alas, McDonald’s burgers are cheap, and serve a specific purpose. Just like fireball. You may be on the younger side, if so, I understand. No animosity here. I’m just saying. There’s nothing great about it if you’re actually looking for great whiskey
"Here's a scale shape" *plays advanced solos* I kinda feel like I wasted time watching this video because you did not show us how to apply the scale at all.
don't mind what exactly he's playing. just focus on where (particularly the low e string) on the neck he is playing corresponding to the key of the backing track.
This is one of the most well explained lesson on major and minor pentatonic scales and when to use them
Yeah! I agree. All done in 6 mins

That's awesome to know I'm not the only late starter too. Been chillin on rhythm for 20 years and thought, you know what, that sounds fun.
Mate you’re such a great teacher and person thanks so much for lessons and the way you deliver them

Escape the Matrix man he was trying to keep things simple here Mixolydian is a mode of Major scale when you say modes you lose audience mate😅
Had to watch this video 2 times cuz it's filled with so much info. Thank you
Excellent presentation for young guitar players... and a great reminder for older ones, too!
Basically, to make a minor into a major, play 3 frets back.

9th fret box = E major pentatonic which is also C# minor pentatonic.
Well done.
Great lesson man..ive been playing for 25+ years and I still use whats in this video, it's good stuff!😁
Awesome lesson. The graphic on the screen really helps! Smart.
Clear, concise and great demo's with the backing track ..... nice work Mike
Great lesson and breakdown! Thanks! Seems like the key to success is knowing the fretboard and locating those root notes in each form. ✌🏻🎸
Craig Fussell resolvimg on root note is not essential for pentatonic scale it always soynds awesome thats a magic of the scale try major scale in any key you will see if you dont resolve on root note it sounds nasty-just my observation!🤔
One of my favorite guitar channels definitely subbed
You deserve 500k subscribers. Your awesome
He's the second guy on line I found giving that exact lesson. Must be something to it.
Great lesson for today
Great lesson! You explained it really well. Just subscribed. Thanks!
great video
did anyone else hear paradice city at 3:18
Yes! I knew that bit reminded me of something. Thanks!
Yep
Excellent teaching..
I always refer to it “Index finger on the root, blues scale, pinky on the root, country scale.”
This was literally one of the most helpful videos I have ever exposed my brain too
Well delivered, well done!
This video was really helpful....Thanks a lot Mike!
Good info / tip to start remember notes/scale on fretboard.
You just blew my mind!
What's up everyone Mike here from the art of guitar here
Brilliant video dude!
Great lesson! Many thanks.
This helped so much. Thanks!
Very great video!! Helped me a looooooot
Thank you ❤
Fireball cinnamon whiskey! 🔥🥃 good stuff 😋 love the vids! Really helping me as a beginner guitar player! ❤
Yooo I've been thinking about the "My Girl" thing for quite a while now before watching this XD This opened my eyes a lot about the notes I can use in a key!
I'd like to see a video on the particular phrasing you use in this video. I'm in a total phrasing rut.
Solid lesson!
Mind blown. Never realized just shifting the same minor pentatonic pattern down could sound major.
Cool lesson
Very good.explanation to make use of.major
and minor pentatonic.scales
Very good channel and thanks. Subscribed. I wish you well

Your shirt gave me a hangover.
Listen to Dickey Betts tearing it up on any Allman Brothers record, and you'll get a great lesson in how to use the major pentatonic scale!
*thank you*
I can't believe other guitar channels and websites miss out on this extra resource for the pentantonic scale, and it really sounds country-esque to me. Would you say a lot of country songs use major pentatonic as its base?
matangabrother they do
matangabrother Very much so.
matangabrother man checkout Bred papas channel he talks hours about major/minor interchange and on adding chord tones
Southern Rock
Good video !
You are the best!
wheres the any key
The scale pattern can have its root on any fret of the E string
This thing is about relative minor major thing i guess . e major notes are same with c#minor. C # minor pentatonic shape will be e major
Not quite .......... its about playing a major or minor scale over the same key, he's not going to the relative minor
Yes, that's exactly what it is.
Very cool
The-Art-of-Guitar, what is the silver-colored bar on your first fret near the headstock? Is this something that lowers the strings to make it easier to play in C and F? If so I've been looking for something like that.
Thank you for the video! How do you know when to switch between minor and major scales, or when to switch so it sounds right?
Great lesson Mike i remember my struggle over minor Major i was really confused-i wish could run into this lesson one year ago!Just a small note that if you use minor scale over major prpgression then you also wanna inject major 3ds but if you would talk about it your message would not be so clear!🤔Btw your improv is very nice bery unique bends i would love to see your blues improv over 12 bar blue or some funky progression!👌
Smirking to myself. Yes I can play the scale, but soloing is a different story :)
Being intermediate, i was hoping for more. Idk maybe how to blend both in a single lick without too much contrast in sound. Seemlessly and melodicaly. Which notes sound better together while transiioning. Eg. E, g g# b sound good as a run. Hope it makes sense.
Just Play The Pentatonic And Add Wah, That Would Work Too.
I just can’t come up with my own licks for a solo
Mike, will this trick work for all positions of the minor pentatonic boxes?
I think of them as ac/dc & Allman Brothers.
MIKE I know and play several scales every day the ones that you showed and many more. I'll have a few tips in upcoming lessons.
Can you please do a 7 levels of wonderwall in the future? I’m a drummer not a guitarist but seeing that would be funny as hell
If your your soloing in many keys how do you know what backing track to play?? Feeling frustrated

you just need theory for now unfortunately :(
So I can use minor scales in major chords and major in minor?
i can do the scale but the legato is my achilles heel i can do bends and vibrato but there a time and place for that hammer on pull off fast is just my weakness
Question for you: Can you use ANY of the 5 pentatonic shapes with ANY key?
That shirt THO
It goes without saying, but this concept can be applied to any of the major/minor scale shapes
Niiiiice
To use this trick do I need to have the rhythm guitar using 7th chords?
No it doesn’t have to be 7th chords.
Hi Mike ~ is this the logic behind it? F#minor is the relative key of A Major so technically you're playing an F#minor pentatonic scale?
True it is the relative minor but it depends what chord you're playing over. If it's an A major then I see it as that, if it's an F# minor chord then I see it as that. Helps you play the chord tones better if you do that. :)
Let me guess, pentatonic minor?
I didn’t know John Cusack did guitar lessons...
How did I know the scale was the minor pentatonic?
Rev Wolf the root note dictates that
The shape is exactly the same exact for minor start playing it from the first note (where your first finger lays) if you wanna play major pentatonic start playing the shape from the 2nd note (where your pinky lays)
Hi
100
Dig the shirt man !!! Fireball is great whiskey
Avery Tyler Honestly have never tried it. That will have to change. :)

Sounds like "My Girl " ? To me it sounded like "Chucky's in love ".
Hey bud
Hold up your boombox. lol
Sounds more like the Alman bros. effect.
shhitttt, why always minor pentatonic!!! ushhh!!
"Here's a scale shape"
