  • Documentary film-maker, Adam Curtis talks about the relationship between human memory and politics and power.
    A two-day event inspired by the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2012 designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Ai Weiwei, the Memory Marathon explored memory, archaeological excavation and historical recordings through overlaps and interactions between artistic practice and scientific enquiry.

    I think Adam Curtis is the most important voice of the past 20 years. His works should be in every education system in the western world.

    i don't often agree with Adam Curtis about his 'take'; what I love about Adam Curtis is that he intuitively senses what are the discussions that humanity needs to be having. In other words, I don't have to agree with his particular opinion on a topic in order to appreciate the fact that he has raised the topic for discussion in the first place. To me, this is wherein lies his brilliance, is exploring these HUGE collective shifts, all the while other documentarians are exposing hidden truths about a particular narrow subject or other. Thanks AC!

      When I found his films I watched all of them in a binge - and even let them playing when I went to sleep because of his voice that is as clear as his reasoning. I late found out that when I was a teenager, Brazilian public station TV Cultura had broadcasted "Bandora's Box" and I had watched the one about DDT - the complete series is fantastic and for me it's a great example of dialectics.

      Do you know who's in your avatar? That's a character from Brazilian writer Monteiro Lobato. Her name is Emília, a rag doll who comes alive - very smart and defiant of established beliefs. Her name comes from a book called Emilio by Jean-Jaques Rousseau. The picture you're using is from the most recent TV series based on the series of books called "Sítio do Pica-Pau Amarelo" or "Yello Woodpecker Farm".

    "The Living Dead" is awesome! Please, correct me if my interpretation is wrong: it's about memory and history. The first part is how history was manipulated by the nazis and how the official history of WWII was built - with a counterpart by interviews with WWII veterans and Germans. The second part is about the difference between data and memory. The third one closes the cicle by showing how Thatcher, using her memory about a manipulated version of history told by Churchill, did something similar to what the nazis did. (similar - not the same thing).

    • @wcg66
      @wcg66 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you but I think it's more about creating a story (or history for that matter) The Nazis were building their Third Reich, the "third empire", after the Holy Roman Empire and German Empire. They glorified the past to legitimize themselves a successors to Germany's great past. Thatcher did the same with the British Empire, inspiring voters that she could build upon the pre-war Empire that Churchill glorified. In both cases, they were creating memories of former glory that no longer existed but it didn't matter, people wanted to relive that former greatness.

    I have long been an admirer of Adam Curtis. I’ve watched many of his documentaries over the decades and relied upon his ability as a researcher. Occasionally, my own research has led me to different conclusions, but I was genuinely shocked by the many errors of fact in this talk about 'New Religious Movements', in particular his bizarre statement that the only harm caused by these groups has come about when members were kidnapped and deprogrammed. I’ve communicated with more than a thousand members and former members of New Religious Movements that are actually authoritarian cults - only a handful of whom were kidnapped or deprogrammed, however, hundreds of them have described the harm caused to them by such groups. That harm has included physical damage, substantial monetary loss and the destruction of relationships. I’m going to give my objections and point to the blatant errors in his talk. The important point - which I’ve made frequently over the years - is that we should always check facts and never believe that any one source will be completely accurate. Even the most objective researcher can fall victim to their beliefs. Adam Curtis managed to convince himself that it was unnecessary to research his beliefs. He was wrong. You can find many examples of harm on my You Tube channel through interviews with former members of Scientology and groups such as NXIVM (where female followers were branded), New Kadampa Tradition, the Jehovah's Witnesses. To see such a fine researcher gulled into credulous beliefs is nothing short of gobsmacking. This video has been up for ten years. Time he apologised and did proper research.

      I also find his conclusion "memories can't be implanted therefore brainwashing doesn't exist" problematic. Like vulnerable people can't get their worldview, their behaviors and believes turned upside down after being exposed to a group environment where all kinds of manipulation techniques are systematically employed.

    • @NormanFinkelstein9863
      @NormanFinkelstein9863 ปีที่แล้ว

      YOu are obviously right with regard to Harm. Just anecdotally we come across numerous moments in recent history where damage has been inflicted on willing participants in cults. Yet despite the various techniques of manipulation presented in such groups there is no evidence of 'Brain Washing' as anything more than a generalized notion of convincing someone to accept a different method of perceiving things. If it could be shown to exist there should be some scientific means of measuring it.

      It was filmed in a pavilion, it being a relatively flimsy structure a different style of which is put up in the Serpentine Gallery grounds in Hyde Park each summer for a few months. For each year an architect is invited to design something that would work as a meeting space, and each year such constructed pavilions seem to attract a buyer who wants to situate that particular year's pavilion in their home or institution's grounds. Look on the galley website or 'google' it for the summer pavilions that have featured in London in say, the past 10-15 years.

    But... we are weak, always have been in the face of media. New aggressive social media is proof of this. Adam (with his influence) should focus on how we can get more educated and strong to be able to say 'no' in the face of mass media. Not culminate his argument with these invisible barriers to new-age alternative thinking. The masses are not scared in 'new ways of thinking' they are disinterested and desensitised; it is not so much a question of trust, but inspiration. There is very little of it in the midst of media bombardment.

    Doesn't this illustrate the human need for a structure of shared belief and values and in the absence of this people will tend to be drawn to systems of thinking that appear to provide certainty. The internet and social media has exposed much that was once hidden or repressed, so the human psyche is revealed as far more complex, mysterious and home to many powerful and frightening forces that we do not appear to control or understand. One effect of this is hunger for certainty and a rise of polerised belief systems producing 'I' am right and 'you' are wrong and applied to virtually any subject often totally ignoring any rational perspective.

      I like Curtis, but in the Century of Self, he treats brainwashing experiments,, psychic driving, etc, as if real harm was done.
      People are not so malleable that they can be fundamentally changed against their will. If they are "convinced against their will", they are "of the same opinion, still", as the Protestant saying affirms. They will be working their way back to what they sincerely believe to be true, to be the person they know themselves to be.
      But there are circumstances which make people mentally weaker than a strong-minded adult, at his or her best. Childhood, sickness, drugging, torture, isolation have all been used to weaken the minds of people and make them less able to fend off suggestion, especially when it is forcefully applied. Then, the person may work to become whole, but it is needless pain and suffering, inflicted by cruelty. Torture may not work to change a person into another person, but it is still a violation of any persons most fundamental rights. You are who you choose to be; no one has the right to try to force you to become whatever they choose.

      @ Well, whatever our experiences are as adults, most of us have some experience of our thinking being defeated, somewhat, as children, by people who exercised "undue influence" of one kind of another. We may insist that we're going to remain basically the same, not that we're against growing and learning, and the changes that involves. But we are against someone's efforts to make us into no more than an agent of their agenda, for lack of a better euphemism. For instance, the narcissistic bully who works to shape a subject into a pawn, is all too well known. To be strong enough to be able to withstand their machinations, is desirable, but in some social settings, it results in ostracism by everyone who is charmed by the bully, or who pretends to be, in order to have a favorable place in the bully's social order. Defiance of the bully exacts a price, of ostracism and scapegoating. Everything that is wrong, or goes wrong, is the fault of the one who defied the bully, and since "everyone agrees", and there's no validation for anything the ostracized one observes, self-doubt becomes a much bigger problem than it otherwise would be. Who can be so sure of their own thinking that they are unbothered if everyone constantly finds fault with everything about them? It wouldn't even be desirable to be so self-assured, that universal rejection and condemnation wouldn't bother us, but it is good to be able to see through such attacks if they do come our way. But many people struggle against the reign of some bully's terror, and go on, year after year, struggling to survive in their office, school or neighborhood, run by this bully. As the months and years go on, the complete blackout of any alternatives to the bully's official point of view, wears on the person, and being very young makes such treatment really hard to withstand. There are many such arrangements, throughout all kinds of settings in this world. The incidents vary in severity and damage done, but it really isn't that unusual for bullies to use psychological warfare against their victims. It is still real damage, and real suffering, and it costs those affected years of overcoming it, which they would not have otherwise had to spend that way. I think it's obvious that an epidemic of narcissistic bullies, claiming a Darwinistic right to run and use the lives of everyone they come into contact with, is a driving force in the epidemic of childhood suicide. Even weakened people may have been strong, once, but be reduced through the wear and tear of the fight, and wonder if the "evidence" against them, may not be the truth. It's brainwashing when you must fight it everyday of your life, not only when you are successfully convinced.
