The Absolute Best Desserts In Every State

  • Food tourists often visit different regions of the country to try the local takes on main-course dishes: barbecue, burgers, and other favored delicacies. But the U.S. loves its sweets, and there are just as many regional varieties of desserts as entrees.
Some locales are so protective of their regional desserts that state legislatures have voted to make those dishes the official state dessert. But even those states that haven't codified their love of a particular after-dinner treat into law will unofficially defend theirs with great fervor. Want to try them all? These are the absolute best desserts in every state.

Loved the video. Michigan is known for its fudge, especially on Makinaw Island. We also like cherry pie, with cherries from Traverse City. Another thank you for spelling scotheroos properly

While biscochitos may be the official state cookie of New Mexico, and is very popular at Christmas and other events, it is the sopiapilla that is king of desserts! While it may be popular in AZ, and like you said “it was developed in New Mexico”, almost every New Mexican style meal (a combination of Mexican, Spanish, Anglo, and Native American that is heavy on corn, beans, squash, and chiles) is automatically followed with sopiapillas. Start a dish like stacked enchiladas, burritos, posole, green chile stew, etc, and you usually don’t need to order the sopiapillas. A basket gets dropped off at you table, hot from the fryer. They’re especially good with drizzled honey (or you tear off a corner and drip the honey inside it) after eating a meal that packs a lot of heat from either the red or green chile that gets poured over almost every dish in the state.

Part of the charm of PA's shoofly pie is its simplicity; you just need to use the right kind of syrup for the wet bottom. Either Karo Dark or Turkey Syrup should work.
You'll also find whoopie pies in every farm market, here.
Right before Ash Wednesday, fastnachts (potato donuts cut in half and spread with butter and/or syrup) are everywhere.

What is oddly hard to find outside of Chicago is simple custard pie. Also missing in the upper Midwest are cream puffs, which are a Wisconsin State Fair specialty. The bakeries in Minnesota were baffled when I asked about them.

Sopapillas are not just a sweet treat in New Mexico. They are a thin fry bread that puffs up to form a cavity that can be filled with meat, cheese, etc. Can also be used as table bread to scoop up the sauces from a plate meal. Hard to find in other places, but easy to make at home.

Fortune cookies are not a dessert, I don't care where they were invented. Hot Fudge Sundae was invented here and is a REAL dessert.

    • @sliverscreencritic

Thank you! As a California native, I was appalled that they put fortune cookies for us considering we also have maple bars, chiffon pie, chiffon cake, rocky road ice cream and as you mentioned Hot Fudge Sundaes. Also though not invented in CA we are well known for donuts.

Funny enough, Insider Food put out their own dessert video like this one two years ago and they put donuts for California as the top dessert. They also put akutaq for Alaska instead of the baked Alaska.

I have never had biscochitos like hardtack. They are a shortbread, and should be tender (especially if they’re made with the traditional lard). Besides, while biscochitos are the state cookie, the dessert you find everywhere here is the sopiapillas. They automatically follow New Mexican dishes at almost any restaurant…great at putting out the burn from the chiles. 🌶
