    "Samus bridges the gap between enlightened beings and mindless killers. For underneath her iconic stoic exterior, lies a very human and awe stricken nature. So what is the meaning of samus's duality? And what does it say about the true nature of Metroids? It certainly speaks volumes about fundamental similarites between every form of conciousness. Be it humans, metroids, chozo or luminoth, Samus is the only being in the universe who can converse with and apreciate the deepest conciousness that connects them all."
    Very well said sir. Great job.

    I'm surprised you didn't show footage from Prime 2 when she finds the bodies of the Galactic Federation Soldiers near their ship. That scene shows Samus caring about the lives that were lost in such a simple, yet effective way.

  • @CuppaGi
    @CuppaGi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +111

    I'm bothered by the lack of mention that one of the reasons Samus can even function beyond the limits of a normal human is because she was given Chozo DNA while still a child.

      There's a ton of other details that probably should have been mentioned, but he's probably limiting his videos to a sort of time limit. There is a metric ass-load of cool lore in the metroid series, despite the fact that it all mainly revolved around an individual character.
      For example, in metroid fusion the X-Parasite Samus isn't just imitating her, it actually took over her suit. Samus had to be removed from it when she was infected, and then later the suit just animated itself powered by the X-Parasite. You're not just fighting a doppelganger, you're fighting a doppelganger wearing the same armor you've relied on your whole life. Samus's actual armor for that game basically starts out as a beefed up life-support system, but it doesn't start with any of the features of Samus's trademark armor, which is a neat spin on the "lose all your upgrades at the beginning of the game" trope that the metroid series relies on.

    • @stefanoponce6090
      @stefanoponce6090 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, if they mentioned all that stuff from the manga, they should have also mentioned how she actually is superior to any other human.

    I like to think that, through Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus, Samus is a pretty hardened soldier. She does not think twice about killing the metroids because they ARE dangerous, because they are actively trying to kill her, and because of her mission.
    Then, however, at the very end of Metroid II, she hesitates for just a moment. She is a hardened soldier, but she has not completely lost her humanity, her compassion. In that one moment as the final egg hatches, as she realizes that she hold the fate of an entire species in her hand, it starts to hit her, that with one more blast, she would bring this species to absolute extinction, a species that was perhaps was only dangerous in the hands of evildoers like the space pirates and Mother Brain.
    Hesitating before pulling the trigger, she sees this newly hatched metroid, the very last of its kind, emerge from its egg. Its mother was Samus's last victim, but it knows nothing. It knows not of Samus or her mission, it knows nothing of evil, of the space pirates. It does not even try to defend itself. This creature, though its species was terribly dangerous, is the last of its kind, and it is perfectly innocent. It imprints on her immediately as though she were its mother.
    I like to imagine that a part of Samus still yelled at her to finish her job, to end the threat once and for all, but even as she told herself this, she found herself lowering her weapon, unable to commit this act of xenocide against an innocent creature that trusted and loved her instantly. I like to imagine that she muttered to herself "What the hell am I thinking?" as she brought it back for study.
    She is a shrewd and pragmatic soldier, and, in retrospect, I am sure that she would justify this action to herself with good, logical reasons such as "Well, it would not be so hard to contain just one. Just one is no threat. Its study could help mankind. A safe retrieval could be worth a bonus." But, though her choice was the right one, in that very moment that she lowered her gun, she was not thinking with her head. She was thinking, for once, with her heart, something that she rarely had call to use in her line of work. I imagine the emotion may have taken her a bit by surprise, so rarely must she deal with innocence as an interstellar bounty hunter.
    That is my favorite part of her story. Imagining the emotion behind that scene.

    I like how everyone hates other M. Because none of us have ever had a time of weakness in our life, where we were second guessing our choices. Guess people forget these characters are suppose to be like us. HUMAN. This game takes place right after the baby metroid saves her life. She killed and tried to make the whole species extinct, but the last baby gave its life to save hers. And you think she can't start questioning if everything she has done is right, and have a slight break down? Come on she can still be a bad ass while having a moment of self questioning, and doubt. Disliking this video just because you try to act like other M did not happen when it did.

      Many of the stuff in the game was based in the metroid manga so I didn´t fell in shock when I saw her in Another M. I guess people hate the game because of anti-emo reasons, mostly. I don´t mind her having voice or emotions, in overall it was a very good game. Hope they make a new one.

    I never understood why she was alongside soldiers in Other M since she is supposed to be a bounty hunter (someone who literally works alone). So I watched this video to explain it. Still confused. Bounty Hunter who works for a Galactic Federation??

    • @mrensio9341
      @mrensio9341 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I believe she worked as a soldier in the galactic federation before becoming a bounty hunter. According to the events of Other M. Her commanding officer was Adam, the very same you take orders from again in Other M (For some fucking reason.) But after certain events, they parted ways, and that's when Samus became a bounty hunter. If she worked with Galactic federation after this event, it was because they had a bounty for her. Because one ultra soldier weaponized enough is better than plenty of obsolete soldiers.

    So many complaints about new SSB4 Samus, yes they raised her sexual aspects a small notch, and yes hand to hand combat would be harder the larger breasts one had, but if you weren't aware Shulk has a alt costume with him being topless.. pretty sure lack of clothing makes fighting a bit harder too.. Fact is these days men and women are both sexualized just as much as eachother. So I'm saying sex sells, game devs know this and always have, they also know the gamer collective isn't made up solely of men these days and not only that but people have different sexual orientations.

It makes you faster, increases movement, protects from weather, makes you fit in spaces people can't. It's actually better if you wear them. People are just perverted about it. Hate it or like it, it's just what they're comfortable wearing. There is NOTHING wrong about it.

    Also Ridley is not, just a mindless beast. Ridley is basically similar to Smaug from the Hobbit in terms that he he is a much as a sadist as he is intelligent. As a matter of fact, he seems to have the same level of survivability as Joker has in Batman, excluding when he does die in Joker Returns in the memory part. Anyway, now it's true that Samus's father dies by taking out Ridley's ship, but what isn't mentioned that her mother was set ablaze by him and he mockingly tells Samus later on in her life that he may have eaten her remains.
    Plus it does go in this order in the time line..... Metroid (Zero Mission), Prime, Hunters, Echoes, Corruption, Metroid 2, Super, (with disgust) Other M, then Fusion.
    I outright hate what they did with her character in Other M, because she would have dealt with Ridley, four times prior to Other M (Killing him in Super), plus the same idiots that, like the Space Pirates, thought Metroids were simply just tools, end up cloning Ridley, of course as a baby type thing, but nonetheless cloning him. If in her shoes, like the Arbiter in Halo 3 says to a Flood, no matter how much he got up, I'd kill him, again and again.

    • @Treesicle
      @Treesicle  10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Those are some astute observations and excellent allusions. I can't say I disagree with any of them. I didn't know the bit about Ridley possibly eating Samus' mother. That's some chilling stuff.

      Yeah as far as fiction of this nature, especially stuff I like, I'm good at mentally collecting info from anywhere as far from comics to video game and any knowledge I don't have, I can get. Take for example the origin of the Sinestro Corp. Idea was inspired by not only Sinestro's thirst to be a ruler, but the name was inspired by a guy named, Booster Gold by ad-libbing the name "Sinestro Corp" and I kid you not, Sinestro twirled his mustache like the generic bad guy that ties the helpless girl to the train track type guy. Most of that was on the top of my head.

      Yeah, I remember that, but still I myself have dealt with that type of situation (the seeing a "ghost" thing) and I just deal with it without missing a beat. To be honest I would have been like "What? your back for some more?" and I still expected Samus to be at least a bit tougher than me and no, I'm not joking. As far as I can tell Samus Aran is one of the toughest women I know of as far as a character. I want that Samus, the female character that I look up to that helped mold me into what I am now as the kind of guy that will look danger in the eye and not flinch..

    You obviously never read the manga. Metroids are organisms created by the Chozo, and Mother Brain was created along side them to control the metroids. Samus chose to go to take out the Mother Brain because she grew up with "her", and in an attempt to save the Chozo. Samus also has major PTSD, she freaked out big time and started screaming "KILL ME!" hysterically at one point in the manga.
    If you're going to use images from the manga, you should at least read all of it, and actually bring up all the details rather than just cherry picking it.

      I can agree on that.
      When you read the Manga you fully understand why Samus acts the way she does in Other M. The Manga explains for example why she was so frightened as she met Ridley on the Bottle Ship. That and ignoring Other M completely shows that the guy spend very little on research anf fact finding.

      Iguana Plays Uh no. Shows how much you know about the Metroid community. If you did a little more research, you'd find out that the manga was mostly negatively received among fans. But most agreed it was decent/tolerable for the fact that Samus' sensible personality in the manga took place chronologically prior to any Metroid game, before becoming an experienced huntress. Now thrown in Zero Mission, the 4 Prime games, Metroid 2, Super. The fact that Samus freaks out AGAIN to Ridley in Other M after all those games make absolutely no sense. Even in the manga, when she encounters Ridley for the last time, she has overcome her fear and proceeds to kill him. In the Zero Mission game (which the last few chapters of the manga is based on), she shows determination and anger during the cutscene where Ridley flies in to battle. She didn't even show one hint of concern in any cutscene during Fusion before or after fighting Ridley-X (and that game had plenty of cutscenes, just like Zero Mission). It seems ever since Gunpei Yokoi passed away, Sakamoto has been lacking in his Metroid projects. The manga, fusion, and Other M never reached the success of previous works. Retro seems to be the only group left that knows how to expand the world of Metroid and do it right.

      elvampe13 Wall of Text, LRN2Paragraph.
      Samus never had a personality prior to the manga, everything was fan interpretation. She was an emotionless robot controlled by the player. Nothing you said is factual, the games before Other M never tried to express Samus's human side.
      If you want a FPS with a protagonist with the personality of a rock, stick to Master Chief.

    • @elvampe13
      @elvampe13 10 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      HTakara82 How disappointing. You're a person who's blind when playing video games and expects the game to hold your hand, guide you and tell you everything. You never heard of the expressions ''show, don't tell'' and ''actions speak louder than words''?
      If you truly believe that Samus was a robot after playing Super Metroid (or heck even Metroid 2) and, I assume, you think the same about the Prime games, then you're truly a lost cause.
      Enjoy your Other M (who ruined the strong willed and independent Samus) while attempting to use the manga to justify that horrible mess.

    While Other M is a bad game, you can't just say it doesn't matter in the overall story, as it leads right in to Fusion. The themes of the corruption within the Federation, and Samus's relationship with Adam are important, and will be important if\when Nintendo ever picks up from Fusion's cliffhanger. I agree Other M handled it badly, but you can't just ignore it.

      ***** Because most people who has played previous Metroid games sees Samus as a silent badass, and not the kind that is depicted in Other M(weak, desperate, vulnerable). It's nice to give her human feelings, it's just that in Other M it's a little bit exaggerated.

      No, that's not why i or most people hate other m. You can skip the cutscenes, we don't care.
      What we do care about is how bad and dumbed down the gameplay is.
      The game brings literally nothing new to the table. Eveyrhting is rehashed. The bosses, the weapons, there is no armor updates, the controls are bad, the enviroments are bland and overall it's a big BIG step down from both the 3d games and the 2d games.
      Other m is not metroid quality by any means because it wasn't made by nintendo or a first party studio like retro.
      Huge quality drop + destroying samu's character = why we hate other m so much.
      Oh, and the music, it's rehashed too, and the new tracks are cringeworthy bad.
      Ridleys theme is pretty good though.

      Prime games are waaaay better. Lasts longer, more immersive, more atmospheric, cooler boss battles, you could learn about the environments and enemies by scanning, more story driven, more replay value, way better music, and theres probably more stuff the prime games does better. Super Metroid Is a classic, but it isn't as good as the prime games. People love it more for nostalgia.

    So Batman with daddy issues = Good because it builds character even though he is one step away from going to Arkham.
    Samus with daddy issues = sexist because it weakens her by giving her a touch of humanity that being raised by alien birds didn't have.
    Did I just miss something? Other M was a good story, my complaint was the controls were odd as hell.

    • @silenthero252
      @silenthero252 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bob Miplace Just to clarify...By "daddy issues", are you referring to Samus and Batman's parents being killed?

      Silent Hero
      Yup and Samus's relationship with Adam obeying his every order which just screams "let me please you daddy"

    • @silenthero252
      @silenthero252 9 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Bob Miplace Just wanted to make sure before replying so there's no confusion.
      The difference between Batman and Samus's "daddy issues" is how they're handled. My knowledge on DC comics is limited but from what I know, Batman's parents' murder is what shapes him to be the superhero we know him as. He wanted to stop the crime in Gotham and make sure no one else suffers the same fate.
      Samus's parents are killed by Ridley and the space pirates. According to Other M, she suffers PTSD from that event. The problem being that, even though she has defeated Ridley multiple times, she still doesn't get over it and doesn't grow stronger as a character. (Ignoring the fact how Other M contradicts the previous games.)
      Batman learns from his traumatic past and uses it for good. It's the thing that shapes his character. In Other M, it's only used as a temporary plot device for drama and suspense, only to be quickly discarded. She doesn't even get to kill Ridley.

    • @bobmilaplace3816
      @bobmilaplace3816 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Silent Hero
      Use it for good? Batman is as mentally ill as the people he catches. You are talking to a man who more or less "doesn't kill" and seems to be surprised that they escape Arkham and go after him causing more damage. If Bruce wanted to do good, he would had Joker killed like the movie universe. Then become the Daddy Warbucks of Gotham.
      Samus meanwhile lets go of the past and looks toward the future unhindered by emotional baggage which she drops in Other M. Samus solves her problems with planetary destruction, astleast Samus seeks to end the causes of crap. Sure Ridley wasn't killed but Ridley like Joker will haunt their heroes forever.

    • @vejymonsta3006
      @vejymonsta3006 9 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      No... the story was awful. You can't compare Batman to Samus in Other M. Batman is a stoic badass and Samus is supposed to be a stoic badass. Other M threw that personality out the window and made her something she isn't. A highly skilled galactic bounty hunter that kills cthulhu monsters should never have been depicted as she was in that awful game.

      Also the ONLY big part of other M that made sense was Samus's reaction to Ridley returning. She has killed him AT LEAST 3 TIMES before Other M. He literally killed her family, murdered her parents, and then helped to kill her family again. That breakdown was completely logical and justified. She pretty much has PSTD from the bastard.

    • @Slasken25
      @Slasken25 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cruznick06
      I don't understand how you can argue that it's logical.
      As you said, she has already killed him several times by now.
      She didn't have a problem with it then, why should it be a problem now?
      Her mental problems tied to Ridley are also seemingly resolved in the manga.
      It shouldn't come as any suprise to her that Ridley is back yet again.
      If this game was placed ealier in the timeline I could let it slide, but every game except Fusion takes place before this one. She should be a battle hardened veteran by now, not some brat in need of saving.
      This scene in the game just seems like a lazy way to create drama and tension.
      Another thing: wouldn't it make more sense for her to become enraged at the sight of Ridley if she had PTSD?
      Instead she breaks down and doesn't even finish him off at in the end..

    • @RogueSoldier117
      @RogueSoldier117 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Slasken25 I agree that Samus should've become ANGRY at Ridley's appearance. Would've made more sense. In fact, it might be kind of cool if Samus had something of an obsession with killing Ridley (you know, after murdering her family and all). It would be kinda like a "Captain Ahab/ Moby Dick" kinda thing. I dunno, just a thought lol

      That actually could be really cool. I just like to think other M is an alternate universe Samus. Its based off of a comic that got retconned so the personality of the characters (excluding Ridley) isn't necessarily canon in the video game's universe.

    I don't believe that Other M irrevocably tarnished Samus and the Metroid series as a whole. I think that the Metroid series would be better of without Other M's story(although an improved retcon that fixes the problems with the story is fine by me), but the game itself isn't all bad. The story is where 95% of the problems lie, since the game is enjoyable to play as long as the sensemove doesn't decide NOT to work when you need it most. Outside of the story I give the game a 7.5. As a huge Metroid fan though, it is still a guilty pleasure of mine.
    The only thing you didn't really mention it that the Power Suit is a part of Samus' body in some way(although I think that you at least alluded to in in some way), to the point where she can turn it on and off at will. I don't believe that Samus requires the Zero Suit in order to wear the Power Suit since she didn't need it in the canon manga, but still. Pretty good video I have to say.

    • @Treesicle
      @Treesicle  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The "zero suit" isn't a special suit, it's just another layer of clothing, pretty much like underwear. And the name zero suit has never been used in the Metroid series, only in Smash Bros.

    • @TheAccursedHunter01
      @TheAccursedHunter01 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      PiesCanFly From what I can tell, the Zero Suit is basically the lowest form of defense the Power Suit can provide since you can still use Energy Tanks in the latter portion of Zero Mission. It's basically like underarmor that soldiers wear in real life in order to put on their gear. I'm not completely sure if Samus is required to wear the Zero Suit in order to activate the Power Suit since Samus was wearing some formal attire in the manga and activated the suit under her clothing. I understand what you're saying, but whether or not Samus needs the ZS to activate the PS is one of those unexplained phenomenon that Nintendo has yet to reveal, you know?

    actually, if you read all the events that lead up to it, it makes sense, her first job wasn´t to kill mother brain, thats her first job as a bounty hunter, as a galactic federation soldier her past is unclear. Look up PTSD and then tell me that seeing ridley come back from the dead, and the fact that it slaughter humans all around her when she was a child, having to hide to survive is not enough to get her freaking out. If you don´t like the portrail of the character it´s fine but, It does make sense.

    • @Khrene
      @Khrene 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Felipe Griffiths Well, she saw Ridley revive thrice already. She fought him once in Metroid, then saw him revive as MetaRidley in the Remake Zero Mission, then saw him revive again in Super Metroid.
      And thats not counting the Prime games (three popular titles which Other M doesn't regard as cannon) which add a least one other appearance and revival.
      Shes been fed this stimuli of facing Ridley at least 3 times before, so there's no surprise at Ridley return.
      So that begs the question, why hasn't she had a breakdown before? The game failed to give a proper reason for it.
      Now if she was having an existential crisis in Other M having flashbacks of the assault on her home planet mixed in with the lives of Metroids and aliens shes taken throughout the series, maybe linking into the idea that she will always have to continue killing and no matter what Ridley or Metroids or whatever else out there will always return.
      If that were the case PTSD woulda made for an awesome plot device and totally woulda made sense, but the story wasn't built up like that, the plot device leaned on solely her being surprised that Ridley was back.
      In other words, its not that she had PTSD its the fact that the story was poorly

    • @QrazyQuarian
      @QrazyQuarian 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +LeafTheDracoPlays You're right. She does have Chozo DNA and he forgot to mention that. I'll do a quick explanation for those who don't know because it is an important reason that he left out for some reason. The reason why she has the Chozo DNA in the first place is because when she was taken to Zebes, Mother Brain (yes, she was created by the Chozo as an artificial intelligence, and was later corrupted by the Space Pirates) noticed that Samus would not survive the harsh atmosphere, so she was given genetic modifications to be able to survive; the consequence of this was that she would have the ability to bond with Chozo technology (and by the way, this is also the reason why the Energy Controller bonded to Samus in Prime 2: Echoes, because the Luminoth are related to the Chozo and have linear technology to them), thus giving her unique access to her suit.
      One other thing he didn't mention, which also ties into this one, is that the Metroids were actually biologically altered by the Chozo to fight the X-Parasite. They became domesticated by the Chozo, which means that Samus had a different perspective than the universal misunderstanding of these poor creatures. When the Space Pirates took control of them (he also mistook the reason why the space pirates controlled them; they weren't to be used as soldiers, but rather as an energy source for them because of their mysterious energy-siphoning abilities; since the species is nomadic, despite the home planet they have as seen in Metroid Prime 3, they need a portable energy source, and even go so far as to increase the energy output by infusing them with phazon in several instances), the Metroids became feral and a force the Space Pirates just couldn't control. So when the Federation gave the bounty of killing all the Metroids on Zebes (because they feared the Space Pirates would use them as weapons against the Federation), one could argue that Samus said she would do it alone because she was the only one who had that connection with them. The Chozo were supposedly wiped out or otherwise ascended, and she was the only living remnant of their culture. Therefore, there was no one else who should do it--or perhaps even could do it. This also goes to point out why Samus took such motherly interest in the baby Metroid and spared its life. She had a connection with the creature that no one else could.

    Samus is a half Metroid, half human now. Metroid Fusion explains a lot & it also shows that if she was to take off the suit, we'll get a Samus that looks like Metroid 3 Corruption Samus when we allow her to be almost corrupted. Her skin will either have some blue throughout some body parts or completely blue all over.

      Treesicle youre welcome. granted i never played other m but a friend of mine who adores teh metroid series was utterly disappointed with submissive characterization of an erstwhile badass like samus. i think his main complaint was samus "unlocked" abilities by receiving permssion from her superior which ofc breaks not only traditional upgrade mechanics but turns samus into a bimbo

    • @ExiledBowser
      @ExiledBowser 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BuddhaBebop And yet no one remembers Fusion which came right after Other M chronologically. You were ordered around as well on that YET NO ONE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THAT. What would make other M fit more is have a prequel before M and after Super to explain why Samus can't be trusted and must be restricted and "ordered" around as she is in both games. Adam is indeed the AI too in Fusion as well btw.
      I do not totally defend M as I hated its game play controls and over all difficulty and the fighting moves crap that did not fit her, more than its story which in itself was badly presented with no explanation for things and most of it should belong in another game, perhaps before Metrod 1 /Zero mission such as her breakdown vs. Ridley and the back story as a new recruit. Most players of M never read the canon manga of her childhood etc on top of it all.
      There should have been a prequel explaining why the federation treats Samus like she is treated taking orders from the GF and not allowed to use her full arsenal.
      Something had to happen between super and Other M to warrant that and which continued into Fusion after she had her new suit with everything locked away yet again.
      One good thing that came out of Other M and was reinforced in Fusion, was the G.F. is just as soulless and evil as the space pirates willing to re-breed metroids and make unstoppable weapons all the same.
      There is also that Metroid Dread idea that never surfaced that was hinted in MP3: Corruption.

    I give kudos to Treesicle for giving us an interesting video on Samus and providing some depth for our favorite bounty hunter (Sorry Boba), however I was a bit turned off on how he described Samus in the first few lines. Not so much that she is sexy (one look at her in the Zero Suit and that should be blatantly clear) but by "strong and independent" from 0:06-0:07. Before anyone who might read this throws the sexist card at me, please hear me out.
    While I agree that strong and independent are good traits for any protagonist to have, is anyone else getting sick of these two traits being slapped onto every description of female protagonists in gaming? Male protagonists such as Mario, Link, Sonic, Male Commander Shepard, Master Chief, and Nathan Drake are hardly described as just strong and independent, they also usually receive an in-depth analysis on what makes them great or not. Yet Lara Croft, Female Commander Shepard, Princess Zelda, Samus, Bayonetta are always "strong and independent." The word "empowered" is often used as well. Due to this overuse, anytime I hear a female character described as strong and independent, I immediately assume the reviewer has very little to talk about and is merely saying "strong and independent" to avoid analyzing the character. Who is she? What are her goals? What are her hopes and fears? "Strong and independent" is no longer good enough. Also, this apparent avoidance gives me the impression that since this character is described just like any other female protagonist, then that must mean she is unoriginal and that she brings nothing new in terms of characterization.
    Fortunately, I already knew Samus is pretty cool and a great character to play as. However, to avoid making female protagonists sound bland, does anyone else think that reviewers should focus on other traits of heroines (no, their bods are not the "traits" of which I speak, but they are a nice bonus) besides "strong and independent? They're good, but such qualities should be a given about a protagonist and we as the audience shouldn't have to be told they're strong and independent in order to believe it.

    • @8elementallords
      @8elementallords 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The biggest thing that really annoys me with the whole "strong and independent" description and the people with that mindset and where they make a big deal out of a female character being someone like Samus, or Female Commander Shepard, or Lara Croft, or whoever...those same people that praise those characters turn around and start bashing anything that isn't "badass". Other M being a prime example, it always feels to me like these people expect the female characters they go around labeling "strong and independent" to never have or express any kind of weakness at all and to never be any kind of emotional except angry...
      Honestly, I think that female characters should just stop being focused on period, there shouldn't be any sort of quota on game characters fitting specific check-boxes or ideals, the story is just going to suffer or the player is going to otherwise be distracted from the game itself by a social/political agenda. Now don't get me wrong, I'm all for having more female characters or more of any specific kind of character really, but I *don't* think it should ultimately matter. It shouldn't matter whether the player character is a man, woman, robot, black, white, purple...all that should matter is whether or not it's a good/well-written character.

    • @H4mmerfall
      @H4mmerfall 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      This video does use the phrase "strong and independent" a lot. But in this case I think its justified, because saying a female character is "strong and independent" feels spot on when you're talking about Samus. And when you think about it, that's all we really know about her as a person (that is if you decide to ignore the events of Other M like the author of the video did).

Nothing to top how the fear set in as the SA-X was near and the music went silent so you could hear its footsteps off-screen unbeknownst to you which direction it was coming from. Especially when the SA-X took chase after you, no scripted scene or data logs can beat the actually running for your life as Samus Aran the world feared bounty hunter who took panic to escape the dreadful SA-X. The best part about it was that it happened in real time, meaning a scene didn't decide if you survived this encounter or escaped you were responsible for your own survival. Probably the coolest moment in Metroid besides baby metroid coming back to save your life.

    my theory is that the Chozo created the metroids for whatever purpose just like anything else created in the universe. That's why the metroid suit was so compatible with samus, Metroid Fusion says it all. It was the 2nd time she had to work together with metroids to fight evil beings in space. And yeah I know, some of them tried to kill her, but it's not like that have any kind of subconscious because they were taken over by phason in Prime 3.

  • @crimsonghost22
    @crimsonghost22 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have to consider that Other M is right after super, where Samus watched the baby she bonded with sacrifice itself to save her from mother brain. She's obviously depressed by this and is in a very unstable emotional state during Other M, and at the same time she's surrounded by figures from her past, back from when she was naive and rebellious. She saw Adam as a mentor and father figure as well as her commanding officer, he had the right to authorize her powerups because it was his mission, she just answered a distress call, not to mention it's following the Metroid formula to strip Samus of her powerups at the beginning of the game. She freaked out over Ridley because he had died for good in super, as the Ridley from Other M is a clone.

  • @irateman
    @irateman 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    the reason that samus and the baby metroid formed a bond is because some metroids that hatch from eggs tend to imprint on the first thing they see, so when the metroid hatched it mistook samus for its mother, and when she realized this, samus could not bring herself to kill it despite the fact that she had already killed all the others. it just shows that samus is not cold or ruthless. underneath her armor is a human being like the rest of us

Samus was enlisted in the galactic federation before she became a bounty hunter. While being a badass on all accounts she can't do anything without an explicit order. In fact during the scene where she was asking to receive an order to leave and help (1:15) she could have been detained and/or dishonorably discharged for speaking out of line and attempting to go over an officer's head. Being ignored and other treatments like this pushed her into becoming a bounty hunter who doesn't play by anyone's rules but her own. Fast forward to the events of Other M where she invades a GF mission without permission simply because she knows that the rules will get them killed. The GF is one of her most stable employers so if she does anything to piss them off she loses a paycheck, therefore she should either leave or play by the rules. When she realizes that the team that she is working with is dying and Adam has been doing sketchy things this whole time she starts unleashing her suit's potential without permission because she doesn't need it. Which lead me to the final point Adam's death. The scene where she is screaming for Adam to not go is when she gets to see her 3rd father die. Samus has little to know memories about her birth father (try to remember when you were 3 really hard and see if you can recall everything), and Old Bird died before she enlisted in the GF along with the rest of the chozo. Adam has been the closest thing to a father that samus had since her last two have died, and now she has to watch him die. Now think of someone that you care about, now think of that person dying, now think of another person you care about just as much not imagine you have to watch that person die and you can't do anything to stop it, not tell me you won't be emotional. Other M doesn't change Samus from being a badass it just makes her more human. It has one of the best written stories of any game to come out in the metroid series and is arguably better than most games that came out around that time. That was my rant; like, comment, and subscribe (he said quizzaciously).

    The best representation of Samus Aran that i ever saw was in a fan made movie called Metroid: Sky Calls, she isn't all that "please, let me do this", like a wimpy anime character, she looks more mature and colected, also not so edgy as folks may want her to be (a thing that soy boys usually think of strong independent womans), she is just a methodical woman who takes caution when but keep calm, she looks logical and reasonable there, that is my blueprint for a good Samus Aran
    I like her respresentation in that small short piece.
